Café Chocolate Lancaster County is known for the vibrant city of Lancaster and its quaint small towns. Though it may be considered small, Lititz is an energetic town with plenty to offer visitors any time of the year. Packed with more history than some larger destinations, “America’s Coolest Small Town” offers its guests great shopping, museums and of course a great selection of restaurants.

40 East Main Street . Lititz . PA . 17543 . 717-626-0123 . chocolatelititz.com

One of several dining choices in town is Café Chocolate. The intimate cafe was once a beloved pharmacy where teenagers like myself would grab a coveted spot at the counter and order from the soda fountain. Today, owner Janice Dull has created an inviting space lled with eclectic art pieces that marry perfectly with her globally-inspired menu. Among the dishes created using fresh, local and fair-trade ingredients are several gluten-free and vegan offerings. Café Chocolate is aptly named for the delicious dark chocolate used to make their desserts and trufes, as well as imaginative infusions like Chili con Chocolate and dark chocolate and strawberry balsamic vinaigrette.

Top right: Truffles, pizzelles and biscotti, oh my! Left: You’ll swear you’re eating a chocolate-dipped strawberry when you indulge in the Chocolate Strawberry Lush. Right: Fresh Key Lime Tart with an organic dark chocolate cookie crust. Bottom: The Tuscan white bean, kale and tomato soup is prepared with homemade vegetable stock, pesto and fresh basil.

B

efore you even step inside the Stockyard Inn & Steakhouse you will sense that there is signicant history. It is one of the oldest continuously operating steakhouses in the United States. The inn, originally built as a farmhouse in 1750, boasts among its owners, a sitting president. James Buchanan owned the farmhouse from 1856 to 1864.

Today, the Fournaris family still owns the Inn. One thing that hasn’t changed in over a century in the restaurant business is to make the best food you rst need the freshest quality ingredients. That’s why the Stockyard Inn has a butcher shop on premises, where all of the Stockyard’s steaks and chops are hand-cut and trimmed.

In 1895, the land surrounding the farmhouse became the hub of livestock distribution in the east. From the Lancaster Stockyards, livestock was taken to Philadelphia, New York and Boston. After Chicago, the Lancaster Stockyards was the second largest stockyard the country.

The Readers of Lancaster County Magazine have given the Stockyard Inn Top Ratings for their steaks 16 years in a row.

With the growth of the stockyards came the need for a place where weary cattlemen could get a hearty meal and some needed rest. In 1900, the farmhouse was converted to the Stockyard Inn. In 1952, James Fournaris purchased the Stockyard Inn. Cattlemen still came to the inn for much needed rest and relaxation, but the inn’s clientele was beginning to change. As the stockyards fell into disrepair and the cattlemen headed west, doctors and businessmen came to the Stockyard Inn to enjoy good food and good spirits. Ironically, the Stockyard Inn outlived the Lancaster Stockyards and by the 1980s the once lively stockyards were abandoned.

Can’t Miss Menu Selections:

Philadelphia-Style Snapper Soup, Poached Pear and Goat Cheese Salad, Crabmeat Au Gratin. And any steak is always prepared to perfection Days/Hours of Operation:

We sent our intern, Abby, on a weeklong food treasure hunt without knowing where it would lead. Armed with a list of menu items and a healthy appetite she set out to find out where locals love to go for their favorite food. We allowed Abby to choose her favorite coffee shop to fuel up for the “trip.” From there she was at the mercy of the locals.

Abby’s foodtrip began at The Coffee Company where she ordered the caramel latte. While enjoying her cup of joe, her assignment was to ask someone where they like to get breakfast and what they recommend she order.

When Abby asked her server at Pine View Dairy who she believes makes the best desserts in Lancaster County, she got a definitive answer: Rachel’s Café & Creperie on Walnut Street in Lancaster. Bri suggests: The Fresh Berry Cheesecake Crepe made with strawberries and blackberries

Mitch, her waiter at The Coffee Company, suggested she grab breakfast at Chestnut Hill Café in downtown Lancaster. Mitch’s suggestion: Chestnut Hill’s Sun-dried Tomato Bagel Sandwich with egg, bacon and cheddar cheese Yogurt Parfait with strawberries, blueberries, almonds and granola

Rachel is a big fan of the steak at Jethro’s Restaurant & Bar in Lancaster, so that’s where she sent Abby next. Rachel’s suggestion: Filet Mignon with Béarnaise Sauce 20 - 2016-17 Dining in Lancaster County

Meagan loves a good burger. So when asked where her favorite place is to grab a burger Lancaster Dispensing Company was at the top of her list, and her favorite type of burger? Meagan suggests: Lancaster Dispensing Company’s California Black Bean Burger with fresh mushrooms, sprouts, American cheese and mayo

When Abby asked her server where she goes for a delicious slice of pizza, Val said House of Pizza in Lancaster. Val’s suggestion: Cheese Pizza

There is nothing like homemade ice cream in the summer or really any time of the year. So where does Abby’s waiter, Steve, go when he want his ice cream fix? Pine View Dairy in Lancaster. Steve’s suggestion: 2 scoops of Oreo Cream ice cream on a sugar cone

Before she could complete her mission, our food tripper had to seek out the best PA Dutch cuisine. She was directed to the Bird-In-Hand Family Restaurant & Smorgasbord. Tony suggests: PA Dutch style Chicken Pot Pie

Abigail King is a 2016 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School, and is continuing her education at Goshen College with a major in journalism. She spends her free time reading, writing and hanging out with friends. 2016-17 Dining in Lancaster County - 21

Pennsylvania Dutch Potato Corn Chowder

Though Pennsylvania Dutch is just one of the ever-expanding types of cuisine available in Lancaster County, it is certainly a favorite among visitors. This recipe is one of my favorites to come out of my grandmother’s farm kitchen. Her meals were very rustic and selection depended on what was in season. Though my grandmother and mother both canned fruits and vegetables for the winter months, freshly picked vegetables held a place of prominence at our summer table. Fortunately, here in Lancaster County, we are never far from a farmers market or farm stand where fresh vegetables are plentiful and delicious. I hope you’ll enjoy this recipe as much as I do. ingredients 1 lb. country-style bacon cut into bitesized slices 2 1/2 - 3 lbs potatoes, peeled and diced into 1/2 - 3/4” cubes

2 (12 oz.) cans evaporated milk 2-3 c. whole milk (depending on how much liquid you like) 1 cup celery, diced

6 cups fresh sweet corn (frozen may be substituted)

2 medium red peppers, diced

4 tablespoons. unsalted butter

2 cups onion, diced

kosher salt and cracked pepper

4 hard-boiled eggs, cut into 1/2” pieces

preparation 1. Sauté bacon in large dutch oven or soup kettle (7 quarts) until most of the fat is rendered. 2. Add celery, onion and peppers and simmer until tender. 3. Add the potatoes and just enough water to cover the potatoes. 4. Bring to boil and simmer until potatoes are soft. 5. Add the corn, butter and whole and evaporated milk. Heat slowly until chowder begins to bubble around the edges. Do not allow the milk to boil. 6. Add hard-boiled eggs, kosher salt and cracked pepper to taste.

Feel free to change up the recipe and use different ingredients. Heavy cream can be used instead of the evaporated milk or use half and half if you want to cut the fat. I often omit the eggs.

Vegetables and bacon sautéing in my mother’s old soup kettle. My soups always seem to taste better when prepared in her kettle. 2016-17 Dining in Lancaster County - 31
