welcome FROM HOLLY

MOOD BOARDS

THE COFFEE IS ALWAYS ON

Hello! Welcome to the first edition of our lovely new magazine – hot off the press! We have spent lots of time thinking about what all our readers may like. We asked the questions and listened to the responses. The conclusion – it was all about change, or lack of. So bring it on, our season of new...

So, we decided to concentrate on how big, small, brave or timid changes can really alter your look and how you feel, along with giving some great, practical advice.

We looked at all the latest styles; catwalk hair, different makeup and fashion trends. The choice is huge, sometimes scary and not always very realistic for the majority of us. So we created our own ‘mood boards’ which was great fun. We then put together a really focused collection of wonderful looks that can be adapted to each individual and more importantly create the best version of YOU.

As for myself and my valued team we look forward to meeting you. Drop in for a casual chat and consultation, whether this is advice for one of our new looks or a general ‘please help’! Flick through our glossy magazines, speak with a stylist – the choice is yours. The coffee is on…

During our creative meetings we discussed the industry research that as professionals, we get to see and some of the results may surprise you (see facing page). On that basis, we did our very own in-depth, scientific mannered research (well we thought it was!). We grabbed unsuspecting ladies minding their own business in town and asked just one question: “How did they feel about their current hairstyle and image, with the winter season now in full-swing?”

NEW DOOR & SIGNAGE

The answers surprised us. The majority either said, they had just not thought about it, or that they were bored with their current style and look.

Our chosen collection and suggestions will hopefully encourage your thoughts about braving a new look.

Plus, we have a brand new look! We have improved our outdoor signage and have a new pink front door! So You is determined to welcome winter and make this year our best ‘hair’ year yet! Come and have a look. We have many lovely clients and continue to offer something special. We love to come up with new ways to spoil you. Our Elite Customer programme offers many benefits and all are designed to enhance your experience at So You. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for all our news and promotions before the Spring/Summer 2012/3 edition is released. I hope you enjoy our great new magazine. See you soon.

colour news Hair fashion this year has headed away from the popular heavier colour look of last season and into a much softer multi-tonal effect. Very effective for working the colour darker at the roots to lighter on the ends, however this look is now softer and slightly deeper, evoking more richness. This multi-tonal look means you can choose more shades to create interest. From deep brunettes, to rich coffees, caramels and auburn glints rather than harder shades, there are many options. The use of more shades also keeps colours fresher. With blondes, hair will look thicker, with a good combination of shading rather than a ‘flat’ blonde.

the

perfect consultation

So You were shocked about the above research and wanted to create a new experience for consultations. Here we are – see what you think...

Classic Salon of the Year 2011 – 2012 2011 KITOMBA NZARH BUSINESS AWARDS Part of the 2011 Industry Awards

We feel that part of what can make a consultation perfect is no pressure, where you feel free NOT to book, but to go away, have a good think and be 100% sure. Even pop in two or three times to develop your idea. This is not just for restyles but for a colour change or refresh as well. At So You we have a lovely big area in our reception with a large table where you can relax with friends, look at all our lookbooks and latest magazines and have a chat over a coffee with a stylist (if time available). If you prefer to book first then we offer a complimentary consultation with a stylist for a new colour or hairstyle or both! We also encourage our regular clients to pause as well – come in slightly earlier just in case there is a small desire for change brewing! We just love clients saying ‘yes, I am ready for change’, – that is really exciting for us too. The reception area is available at all times So You is open, so bring your friends, get their suggestions, ours and be ready to be inspired. Often a new hairstyle can take a bit of getting used to. Here at So You we always offer a complimentary blow wave the week after your restyle or cut (new clients only).

CELEB ALERT

Hair Trends For fashionistas in 2012, hair is all about revivals and evolution.

KEVIN MURPHY TEXTURE NET + KEVIN MURPHY RESORT SPRAY + KEVIN MURPHY BOAR BRISTLE BRUSH + KEVIN MURPHY TEXTURE COMB + KEVIN MURPHY CURLERS + BLOW-DRYER + KEVIN MURPHY SESSION SPRAY = LANA DEL RAY

the fringe >> ROONEY MARA Most notable at Versace, were the Rooney Maraesque heavy fringes. This look was also seen at Antonio Berardi, Marni and Iceberg. Working across a number of hair colours (although a slightly better fit with darker coloured hair), a very short fringe needn’t have any demographic connotations at all. It all comes down to your face shape. Keep the cut really short with a smaller forehead or a little bit longer if it works better for you. There is infinite choice for fringes – subtle or statement. Keep fringes sleek with: WELLA CARE VELVET AMPLIFIER + SEBASTIAN SHINE DEFINE + BLOW-DRYER + STRAIGHTENING IRONS + SEBASTIAN SHAPER FIERCE = ROONEY MARA

retro lady >> LANA DEL RAY Vintage glamour rises to the occasion. Beautiful shiny locks with deep side partings evoke the glamour from a bygone era showing femininity at its best. Work the look with professional products from Kevin Murphy. The wonderful, weightless products like those listed above, enhance curl and control frizz, creating that notion of ‘sex appeal’ for this retro-glam look. Brush the waves through after curling for a more 40s-meets-70s relaxed version.

KEVIN MURPHY ANTI GRAVITY SPRAY + BLOW-DRYER DIFFUSER + KEVIN MURPHY EASY RIDER + KEVIN MURPHY NIGHT RIDER = ALEXA CHUNG

the pixie >> CAREY MULLIGAN The pixie has been reborn. Not since Audrey Hepburn and Mia Farrow in the 50s and 60s, has anyone worn the cut as well as the latest breed of talented young actresses. Nowadays, there are two popular pixie styles – a slightly longer length with wispy ends, or a short, completely cropped cut that shows off the face and forehead. Both create a focus for a sexy neck shape at the back. SEBASTIAN TEXTURIZER + BLOW-DRYER + SEBASTIAN MATTE PUTTY = CAREY MULLIGAN

midi bob >> ALEXA CHUNG

COME ALONG TO ONE OF OUR GREAT WORKSHOPS FOR MORE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CREATE SOME OF THESE HOT TRENDS >> MORE INFO ON BACK PAGE).

Alexa Chung’s hair has caught the mood of the moment, and better news still, her famous shaggy cut is easy to achieve.
Women seem to be departing from that longer look of last decade. Alexa’s hair is a variation on the classic bob – not too done and not too messy. Alexa wears it effortlessly. This is a really versatile cut, if you are looking to wear your hair with different ‘looks’ depending on your mood. The length can be altered to suit your face shape and hair type and even better, this style looks great on all hair colours. We love this cut as it looks different on everyone and gives loads of easy styling options using different products.

Hair Tips & Tricks So You Hair are stockists for Sebastian, Wella and the Kevin Murphy ranges of professional hair care. We thought we would share with you, our own great tips.

Holly says >> When I shampoo my hair, I always leave the shampoo on for about two minutes. This ensures that you allow the shampoo a chance to cleanse and to do its job! When I do this with SP Repair Shampoo I really feel my hair has been carefully cleansed and is ready for conditioner.

Kelly loves >> Sebastian Gel Forte – I really make use of this product as it’s so versatile. It can be used to define really curly hair and it also gives control to a bouncy, wavy blow-dry. This does not go ‘crunchy’ but gives hair a strong hold while keeping it glistening. It has a pearlescent formula – truly a new age gel!

Amber advises >> A product that is almost a hangover cure! Well a beauty one anyway! Kevin Murphy Fresh Hair – a dry shampoo for hair, that really puts body and texture back in. It also removes odours, excess grease and oil (basically all your sins from the night before). This can also be used to create texture on clean hair too. Keep this hair ‘life saver’ close at all times.

<< Claire says

<< Lydia advises A tip for a smooth ponytail is to always tilt your head back as you brush it into shape and secure with a band. When you then raise your head it naturally tightens, so no baggy back!

If you are using hot tools (curling tongs or straightening irons) and you make a mistake, do not try and rectify it straight away. Walk away for a few minutes, leave your hair to cool and then come back to it – you will achieve a much better result.

Sam says >> Our shampoo service is the highlight of all our clients’ visits, and in particular, the luxurious scalp massage. Tip – let us know if you prefer light/medium/firm pressure to ensure a personalised experience.

Keats Boutique

Mega Metallic Vampy Vixen Va Va Voom Eyes

Keats Boutique in Petone really helped us out with our new magazine. Owners, Josie and Llisa provided their take on the fashion trends of the moment. “Autumn/Winter 2012 is full of very beautiful – and what I would call – sumptuous looks,” says Llisa. This year, a real pairing up of both masculine and feminine elements can be seen in the sexy and chic tailoring that is matched with oversized shirts, chunky knits and very feminine, soft fabrics. Real texture and contrast is created by layering delicate silks and chiffon, with the heavier knits and chunky winter boots. There is also more emphasis on sexier weekend wear (this can only be good!). This look includes slim line jodhpur or tailored pants, killer heels with oversized shirts, knits and jackets. Truly must-haves this season are jackets, coats, scarves and capes. The must-dos are to contrast, mix and layer. This winter we can all experiment; be sexier, braver, more feminine or masculine – your choice. And... even better, be warm as well. Now that’s a real fashion bonus! Have a look at the Keats Boutique website, showcasing the winter trends, and of course all the outfits are available in store.

Here is the key to mastering this on trend look in just five minutes. It’s saucy, sexy and simple and anyone can wear it. With this simple technique you can adjust the intensity to suit your own personal style. The key to pulling this look off is to blend, blend, blend and then blend again!

What you need Eyeliner: The best kind is the soft, smudgy variety in either black, brown or midnight blue. Eyeshadows: To pull off this look you will need a key metallic colour. Go for gold, silver, or a vibrant bronze/copper. The second colour is for defining and intensifying the corners and under the lower lash area. Try black, brown, grey or even midnight blue (this colour must be the darkest in your trio). The third colour is the highlighter. Opt for a shimmery pale shade of gold, champagne or bone. Stay away from whites or pinks as they can border the look too much. Mascara: Blackest, false eyelash types are the best for this look. Three eyeshadow brushes: You will need two small domed shadow brushes and a fluffy shadow brush.

The low down Start by smoothing eye primer or concealer over the whole lid and lash line to brow. Blend with your fingertips for a smooth sheer finish. Next apply a soft smudgy eyeliner drawing a thick messy line corner to corner across the upper lash line, about half way up the lid towards the crease. Draw another line under the lower lashes, from inner to outer corner. Connect the two lines at the outer corner. Don’t worry about being too tidy.

Blend the soft pencil up towards the crease with a small eyeshadow brush. Blend with a very light touch. It may take longer but it’s worth it. Take your key shade of eyeshadow and apply to the entire upper lid with a sweep of a fluffy eyeshadow brush. Take the colour up to the crease and soften any hard lines with a clean sponge/brush. Concentrate most of the colour on the lid and lash line. With your small eyeshadow brush pick up a small amount of the darkest shade in the trio to intensify the outer corners and under the lower lashes. Blend well. With another clean, small eyeshadow brush highlight the inner corner of the eye with your key colour. Then do the brow bone with your pale, highlighter shade. Line the inner rim of the upper and lower lash line with eyeliner. Lastly apply several coats of mascara to the top and lower lashes. www.micheleperry.co.nz
