Translation of the Recommendation Letter:

We write this letter to acknowledge the excellent work qualifications exhibited by Mr. Diogo Alexandre Pedrosa Amaral da Cruz during his internship for admission in the Order of Architects, which was done in the firm Manuel Rodrigues Gouveia (MRG) S.A. based in Parque Industrial de Abrunheira and with offices in Urbanização Alto do Sol, Lote 4, Alto da Relvinha, Pedrulha, Coimbra. Since the beginning he accepted every task that we gave him with the utmost enthusiasm and dedication. We began by putting him in the “construction planning” department, where he was responsible for doing technical drawings and project analysis for various buildings MRG was constructing at the time. Furthermore, we also found appropriate for Diogo to be in direct contact with subcontractors in order to make himself acquainted with the commercial department and price comparison study between suppliers, which allowed him to learn about the different materials available in the market. After this first stage, when the opportunity arose to go to Lisbon to do monitoring work of an office building, Diogo immediately took advantage of it. During this period, he always showed interest in learning everything he could in the construction site by visiting the building regularly, where he executed surveys and analysis for alternate technical solutions. Additionally, he had a very important role in the development of a 3D model with construction details, resorting to a software he had never used before, which serves as a testament to his adaptation skills. Ultimately, we can conclude that Diogo was an excellent collaborator, distinguishing himself by his punctuality, assiduity and by always trying to promote a good relationship with his work colleagues, having so been a positive contribution in the development of a set of works. We expect a promising future in Diogo Cruz’s career with the certainty that he will always be an asset for any team he comes to be part of, either in Portugal or abroad, as is his objective.

Best regards,

Rudolfo Oliveira Gouveia, Administration, MRG - Engenharia e Construção SA. Coimbra, 26th August 2013

Translation of the Recommendation Letter:

To whom it may concern,

It’s with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Mr. Diogo Alexandre Pedrosa Amaral da Cruz. Between the years 2008 and 2010 Diogo was a regular presence in our atelier during summer having collaborated in various projects, where he actively participated in the different phases which accompany the development of a project. These involved namely exploring conceptual ideas, surveys in the intervention area, execution of technical drawings and also model making. During this period it was possible to verify that Diogo possessed a good understanding of the needs of the project in addition to an interventional and pertinent attitude regarding the best solutions to implement when working either on a building or an urban scale. Over the years, I had the opportunity to accompany some of the projects developed by Diogo during the architecture course and I was pleased to see the positive influence these summer internships had in him, from a creative and methodological standpoint, which is shown in the quality of his works. It is also worth mentioning his aptitude for establishing good interpersonal relationships and how effortlessly he integrated in our team. In short, given the professionalism, enthusiasm and dedication Diogo Cruz has always shown I’m certain that his work will be a valuable contribution anywhere he ends up exercising his professional activity.

Best regards,

Carlos Antunes, Atelier do Corvo Miranda do Corvo, 27th August 2013

Museum in Coimbra’s Downtown rua joão cabreira, coimbra, 2008 exercise developed for 2nd year project class

Since 1992 there have been plans to create a tram line in Coimbra in order to improve public transportation within the city. Although some demolition works had already got underway in the city’s downtown area the whole project has nonetheless been recently halted due to financial dificulties. It was within this context that the students were asked to develop a museum in one these demolished areas. Furthermore, one of the main conditions of the project was that it had to adapt itself to the fact that the before mentioned tram line would have to pass through it. In regard to the exterior design of the building, the main idea was to prolong the variation of heights which can be seen throughout the downtown’s condensed urban grid. With that in mind, the project was intended to be a set of volumes, each representing a specific exhibition room. By doing this the building itself would materialize with the surrounding area, thus creating a sense of belonging with the locale. The program of the Museum is constituted naturally by the exhibition area in the upper floor, in addition to an auditorium, cafeteria, museum store, garage, workshop spaces and an administrative area, which are distributed throughout the lower level. As one can see from the following drawings and renderings, attention was given for each space to receive natural ilumination, either in the form of windows, skylights or clerestories.

Hotel in Celas’ Economic Core montes claros, coimbra, 2010 exercise developed for 4th year project class

This project consists in a 4 star hotel to be located in one of Coimbra’s busiest zones. The intervention area is divided into 2 sectors: Conchada to the west, which is mainly in a residential area built in the 1940’s, and Celas to the east, which is mostly occupied by commercial and health services, including the Coimbra University Hospital and the Portuguese Institute of Oncology. It was decided that the best course of action was to locate the Hotel right between the two sectors in a quarter called Montes Claros. Unlike most of the surrounding neighbourhoods, this area benefited from an open space provided by a small playground located right in front of it, thus allowing the hotel to have a good amount of sun exposure and also a panoramic view of Coimbra’s skyline. The hotel adapts itself to the curved layout of the terrain which defines the distribuition of the bedrooms alongside the facade. The main lobby serves as the “heart” of the project, having a height of 12 meters and being characterized by a system of skylights made out of concrete beams, “showering” it with natural illumination. This large hall has also openings along the walls creating small links between it and the other programs distributed throughout the hotel. Lastly, there was an attempt to open some of the hotel’s services to the surrounding community, mainly the bar, restaurant and the conference room, situated in the ground floor.

Coimbra Cultural Center casa do sal, coimbra, 2011 exercise developed for 5th year project class

As part of a general proposal entitled “Reinventar Coimbra (To Reinvent Coimbra) the project is located in Vale de Coselhas, which is a green space surrounded by highways which provide a fast connection to one of the city’s main services: Coimbra University Hospitals. The 1st phase of this project consisted in a group work with the objective of requalifying this untapped space. In order to bring the citizens to this area, a solution had to be found concerning the poor access between the park and the surrounding area, which was severed because of the adjacent highways. These improvements came in the form of underground tunnels, designed so that no interference would come to the automobile circulation and some alterations in the layout of IC2 highway. Likewise new programs were introduced in the park: a tram stop, a cultural center, a hotel, a business center and finally a residential area. For the 2nd phase of the project, each student became responsible for a portion of the proposed programs. The CCC (Coimbra Cultural Center) is a multi purpose complex situated in the western part of Vale de Coselhas, more specifically an area called Casa do Sal, and extends itself halfway accross the park. The main volume of the CCC is composed by 3 bodies representing the following purposes: a media library and cinema room (west body), a great auditorium for theatre perfomances (middle body) and a museum (east body). Following eastward one can find the library which displays a close relation with the water mirror - one of the most present elements throughout the newly designed green space - and finally the restaurant which is turned to face the continuation of the park.

Platform for Urban Revitalization in Guimaraes Rua Afonso Henriques, Guimarães, 2013 Desafios Urbanos ‘12 Competition - with Francisco Oliveira

The Platform for Urban Revitalization in Guimarães (P.U.R.G.) is a hybrid project which attempts to rehabilitate a derelict factory and at the same time render available a wide range of facilities in order to provide the European Capital of Culture in 2012 with a new and distinctive area for recreational activities. Regarding the urban area where the project is located it was considered that the main avenue in front of the old factory with a constrictive nature for pedestrians, and the abandoned green area to the west both required intervention. Through the Deconstruction of the vacant factory (although conserving its integral structure) a connection between the avenue and the unexploited green space was established. This enabled liberating the avenue from its claustrophobic nature while allowing a greater Transparency and Visual Clarity in this area. The link between the avenue and the green space was attained by creating a “negative” building, or in other words, by developing the core of the project beneath the street level instead of letting it rise above the ground, as usual. The Ramps, which work as the complex roof, allow people access to the new services: an events center, a cafeteria, a gallery and an office space. The public walkway leads to a platform located in P.U.R.G.’s lower level with areas dedicated to Sports and Leisure activities and provides a connection with the adjacent green space. It was decided to promote a new activity with little or no presence in the city so as to develop the tourism in this region. For this purpose the platform was equipped with a launch area for Hot Air Balloons enabling flying over Guimarães and its surroundings. This platform proposes a new Dynamic to this part of town, as well as a new Urbanity, thus providing Guimarães with a quality public space where recreation, leisure and culture will always be present.
