“When the iPad, a source of information, becomes a source of light. Philippe Starck It was only a matter of time before Philippe Starck turned his mind to such a popular, desirable and useful object as the iPad. And the resulting creation is a lamp that satisfies our daily need for information, entertainment and always-on connectivity. Net has a radical, extremely functional design, with a USB socket above the light diffuser for an iPod, iPhone and iPad. The cool chromatic sophistication of the aluminium, the efficiency of a light source with a remarkable twenty eight 3000K Top LEDs and compatibility with various types of digital gadget make the Net lamp perfectly attuned to our contemporary habits.

“Dans un globe une sculpture organique déploie son reflet de lumière technologique.” Philippe Starck Transparency, sinuous lines and elegance are the distinctive features of this table lamp. The delicate shape of Reflect 299 is inspired by the flowing lines found in nature, and in fact its silhouette has the sinuosity of flowers and plants. Defined by the designer as ‘organic sculpture’, this lamp with a polycarbonate body comprising two injection moulded sections, brings a touch of sophisticated creativity into our interiors and surrounds itself with a light that cannot fail to appeal. Attractive when both on and off, Reflect 299 joins the long list of lamps created by Starck in which the ironic, provocative streak in the designer’s character gives way to a more poetic, theatrical creativity. Clean lines, sophisticated technology and high quality light are crystallised in an object that fully satisfies the desire to surround ourselves with objects that are beautiful to look at. In the sinuous lines of Reflect 299 you can read its destiny as a ‘classic’, ready to take its place alongside many others which have made table lamp history.

“A magic bookcase where the books take flight towards the light” Phillipe Starck Only a visionary mind like Philippe Starck’s could imagine a floor lamp like ‘Biblioteque Nationale’. The French designer, like a contemporary wizard with the power to animate objects, imagines a fairy tale bookcase where the books pirouette and take flight towards the light. This lamp, without sacrificing formal rigour and simplicity, which are constant features in Starck’s work, perfectly expresses the tastes and needs of everyday lives comprising multi-function, dynamic objects. The designer has created small shelves on the main stem for books and other articles. He has also extended its functions with a USB connector to recharge popular smartphones. Having it near us facilitates our daily habits of reading, making telephone calls or relaxing. A surreal addition to settings, ‘Bibliotheque Nationale’ seems to fulfil our simplest but most fundamental desires, with that magic that is often a feature of Starck’s creations. Floor lamp providing diffused light. The shelves are polished stainless steel. A USB connector on the base can be used to recharge popular smartphones.

A lamp with a dual personality, Can Can’s clean, linear shape acts as the container for a sophisticated decorative effect. Like many other creations by Marcel Wanders in which the designer melds together simple, classic forms and features or decorations that draw on tradition, in this suspension lamp too he unites an essential exterior silhouette with a lighting ‘effect’ that is as delicate as it is unexpected. From a distance, Can Can introduces itself as a lamp with a stern design that unexpectedly, when seen close up, reveals a floral decoration that filters the light as it is diffused. Delicate and unpredictable, the beam is broken by the polycarbonate decorative flourish to create an ever changing fabric of light. Achieving a perfect balance between simplicity and refinement constant features in Wanders’ work - Can Can adds an unexpected and sophisticated note to our everyday settings. Also available in a smaller version: Can Can Mini.

CHRYSALIS
N. 1 HL 12Volt 60W ES + N. 1 T5 80W
“Chrysalis is a magic vase, it is not the typical flower funeral, it is a festive evergreen flower fountain. The way a chrysalis hosts the metamorphosis of a caterpillar changing into a butterfly. In the same way this magic vase, out of nothing, grows its fabulous flowers of light. There is a hidden secret, there is life inside, glowing, to come out, to fly as flowers between flowers.” Marcel Wanders With the Chrysalis floor lamp Marcel Wanders engages with one of the Flos brand’s most distinctive materials: the ‘cocoon’ resin used in the 1960s by the Castiglioni brothers and by Tobia Scarpa. The French designer uses this resin for its adaptability and high strength. More than 50 years have passed since the first applications of ‘cocoon’ in lighting and although the production technique has remained the same, the material has been improved and softened. As in the past, the resin is sprayed in three phases onto the skeleton of the lamp, and then covered with a special transparent finishing to protect it and improve the shine. Exploiting and enhancing the characteristics of this dynamic, malleable material, with Chrysalis Wanders has created an elegant lamp that draws its inspiration from a classic flower vase or the amphorae of antiquity. Years ago, with his Zeppelin lamp, the designer had already demonstrated how suited this material was to creating highly original and extremely beautiful light fittings. With his latest creation Chrysalis, the designer revisits the perfect shape of the amphora but increases its size to two metres in height. Impressive and striking, in Wanders’ imagination Chrysalis becomes a ‘magic vase’ which, like a chrysalis, is waiting to become a butterfly. These visionary metaphors don’t disappoint our expectations. As well as producing light by means of a fluorescent tube in the main body, another light source at the top projects decorative beams of light onto the ceiling through a polyurethane ornament. Reflecting the original idea of the ‘magic vase’, Chrysalis scatters ethereal luminous flowers around itself, creating a pleasing and captivating play of reflections.

“The general idea underpinning this project is to offer a lamp which can be infinitely adjusted to satisfy all lighting needs. We have developed a new type of lamp that is naturally positioned in space - like a plant - with long cables providing maximum freedom to adjust the direction and height of the light source. This object is the industrial version of the ‘Liane’ lamp presented at the Kreo gallery in Paris in 2010.” R. & E. Bouroullec The Aim lamps by the Bouroullec brothers seem to have stylized patterns on their surfaces. With their playful, minimalist design, these suspension lamps create a vivacious tangle of wires that seems to develop and grow like branches or climbing plants. In this lamp too, the two designers confirm that their main source of inspiration is nature and its contemplation. Looking at the simplicity and naturalness of organic forms, they create equally simple and basic objects. By reducing the suspension lamp to its essence - a wire and a light source - the Bouroullec brothers breathe poetic life into a lamp with a striking graphical impact and an original shape. Without modifying the ‘Liane’ model light, which features a leather covering, the designers have created this proposition for Flos by choosing the least delicate and strongest materials, like polycarbonate and die-cast aluminium. Poetic and cheerful, the Aim lamps adapt to the style of different settings, because they make it possible to direct the light freely and adjust the height of the diffuser by sliding it up and down the suspension wire.

PIANI small Multichip LED 2700K - CRI82
The Piani collection is made up of a flat base and a flat top. The base is either a tray so that objects can be displayed in a triangular beam of light as if they were on stage or, in its longer version, a shelf so that more objects can be supported by this hybrid design. Piani comes in plastic as well as in oak wood and basalt stone in the shelving versions so that different sensual experiences are suggested. Well-known for their clean lines and minimalist designs, with the ‘Piani’ collection of table lamps the two French designers demonstrate how formal reduction and simplicity of design can breathe life into objects that are both useful and elegant. The distinctive feature of the series is the overlaying of two flat elements: the upper one providing direct light, while the lower one, shaped like a tray, becomes a convenient receptacle for pens, coins, paper clips, keys and the other little objects that we never know where to put. And so these lamps become a sort of elegant ‘valet tray’ for desks and entrance halls. Available in small and large versions, the collection comprises just a few articles made from injection-moulded plastic. Always sensitive to peoples’ daily needs, with ‘Piani’ the Bououllec brothers have created objects that are both useful and functional.

TSIH
N. 2 x 24 TOP LED 3000K - 1100lm total - CRI80 - 14W
Things small and large often have deep affinities. This well-known axiom has been fascinating us for centuries, so much so that two of the most recent creations by Piero Lissone focus on this analogy between the tiny on one hand and the grandeur of the universe on the other. The designer’s chosen names for the TSIH and TYL sconce lights, both featuring a simple, sober design, are the names of stars. TSIH stands out for its T-profile and TYL for its L-shape. Similar in terms of their purity and minimalism, and sharing the coolness of the aluminium from which they are made, these sconce lights differ in terms of their light diffusion. One directs its beam of light both onto the ceiling and the wall beneath it, while the other projects its light in one direction only. Eliminating all frills and unnecessary decorations, the designer has created discrete sources of light that modulate the walls with their presence. Given the synthetic design and minimal form of these two sconce lights Lissoni, guided by a visionary spirit, concentrates the grandeur of the heavens in the two names, as if wishing to introduce a poetic touch into our interiors.

Simplicity of shape and clean lines make this understated sconce light by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby a discrete presence in any setting. Well-known for the signature minimalist design that is a characteristic of all their projects, with the Beaker sconce light these two English designers have created a wall lamp featuring creative simplification in a design free of decorations and pointless details. With an opaque ceramic body and a minimalist profile, Beaker is reminiscent of a laboratory recipient which Barber and Osgerby have transformed into a delicate container of light. Available in large and small versions with a Power Led light source, Beaker diffuses its light across walls both from the top, through the injection moulded polycarbonate cover, and from the bottom, through a small hole. This opening projects a delicate beam which acts as a spatial counterpoint, creating an evocative note of light that enlivens room surfaces.

“Only rarely in our profession do you conceive of and design a product that in one way or another will become an archetype. With the Kelvin T Led project I have always been convinced that this is the case.” Antonio Citterio After the great successful launch, the Kelvin table light, designed by Antonio Citterio with Toan Nguyen, is presented by Flos, in occasion of Salone del Mobile – Euoluce 2011, in a new version which incorporates a ‘green’ element that offers a saving on energy by providing only the amount of energy needed. Simply brush the head of the light to activate a sensor that detects the ambient light level and adjusts the intensity of the LED accordingly. The ON/OFF optical switch changes colour from orange to green to show that green mode is activated. Brushing the head of the light again deactivates the function. Kelvin LED revolutionises the design of angle-poise table lamps: length and base are minimal and the flat head doesn’t clutter your view of the screen in any position. 30 LEDs combined with a special chemically photo-etched diffuser guarantee a warm, soft and comfortable light, avoiding harsh visual contrasts and dazzle. Switched on/off and adjusted using a special optical sensor.

2620LEDS N. 2620 CHIP LED 3000K - 11200lm total - CRI85 - 200W
The new ‘2620LED’ is a very conceptual suspension lamp by Ron Gilad which takes inspiration from the historic ‘2097’, designed by Gino Sarfatti in 1958, as well as from the recent Wall piercing, an iconic product created by Gilad for the Flos Soft-Architecture collection. 2620LED provides an indirect light via 2620 leds, embedded in 20 rings, arranged around a central axis. This systematic layout builds a chaotic pattern and suggests a rotational movement. With the new technologies Gilad explores new lines and spaces, offering an innovative product which marks an evolution among suspension lamps.

‘Delta’ forms part of a series of wall lamps which, as the name ‘La Linea’ suggests, feature a very simple and linear design and a die-cast, painted tubular aluminium body. ‘Delta’, like the other sconce lamps in the series, is an excellent example of how to combine the latest lighting technology with aesthetic and design research. Ron Gilad explains: “Power LEDs have become an excellent and functional source of lighting. The ‘La Linea’ collection has been created from 3D designs that reproduce classic candelabras and sconce lights.” The design of this wall lamp unites formal minimalism with the remarkable lighting capacity of power LEDs. The result is an elegant sconce light that is reminiscent of the candelabras of the past, reinterpreted from a modern point of view.

WALL RUPTURE GOLD: Warm White LED 2800K - 84W - CRI90 SILVER: Cold White LED 5000K - 84W - CRI90
“Inspired by the Hommage table presented last June at the Art Basel Miami Beach design event, Rupture is an invisible lamp, like a secret fissure in the wall which reveals the roof of the world in jagged relief. Golden or silvery, the crack transforms materiality into light.” Focusing on light at its most physical and tangible, for the Soft Architecture collection Thierry Dreyfus has created Wallrupture: a surface with an evocative crack as though penetrated by a beam of light. Drawing on forms of expression closely linked to contemporary art, the artist has created a striking and powerfully sculptural light installation. Like the ‘Hommage’ table from which Dreyfus draws his inspiration, Wallrupture also creates an atmosphere in interiors where suggestions from the world of nature - think of the power of earthquakes or volcanic eruptions are combined with the precision and formal rigour of a full-blown architectural project. This highly original light installation adds a bold and unexpected artistic flourish to interiors.

The set design presented by FLOS at Euroluce 2011 is a tribute to the creativity of designers whose contributions make it possible to offer a collection of unique products each year. In the set-up designed by Fabio Calvi, the designers are ironically portrayed as a team of painters at work. Through the use of large structures, like the builders’ staging frames which have been transformed to become parts of the exhibition, the stand becomes a world in constant construction. A space that is a metaphor for the unceasing design work that animates FLOS, in which the designers are the true protagonists.
Our stand will take a rectangular area of 44x24 m (over 1.000 sqm). It will include a showcase area for the new products and a business lounge, opened to visitors and totally lightened with LED technology, where we will exhibit the Soft Architecture and Architectural Lighting collections.

SESTOSENSO
a luminar y apparition by Paul Cocksedge
Flos Professional Space Corso Monforte 15, Milano
Sharing a passion for design, research, experimentation, aesthetic purity and technological innovation, BMW and FLOS have joined forces at Salone del Mobile 2011 to create, thanks to Paul Cocksedge’s talent, SESTOSENSO, a celebration of light. The installation can be visited in the FLOS Professional Space in Corso Monforte 15 from 12th to 17th April. Inspired by the quality and beauty of light and the astonishing new BMW 6 Series, the first BMW with Full-LED headlights, Paul Cocksedge has erected a seamless, curving, white wall extension to the FLOS showroom and low-hanging red and white conical lamps. As with the BMW headlights, the source of light remains hidden, only the light itself is guided through a transparent body, rendering the light source invisible and forever changing its qualities. The resultant, intensely soft light caresses, seduces all around. Stepping inside one of the impressive SESTOSENSO red lights, a video of the BMW 6 Series Coupé reveals itself on the vast white wall. As if accessing a sixth sense, there is a hint of movement in the corner of the eye. Through the light we see the car: through the car, we understand the light. The playful sculptural pieces softly illuminate, stimulate and allow contemplation. Cocksedge gives us elegant, ‘functional brilliance’. The new BMW 6 Series Coupé presents itself as a sport car for connoisseurs who enjoy luxury and appreciate trailblazing technology. The adaptive Full-LED headlamps of the new BMW 6 Series Coupé are an innovation in the field of lighting technology. This innovative technique generates bright white light to assure an especially intensive and uniform illumination of the roadway. This technique, which is being serially deployed for the first time in the BMW 6 Series Coupé, facilitates an impressive restaging of BMW design icons such as the round headlamps and the taillights.
