‘THE FIRST JOURNEY WILL BE VERY DANGEROUS, AND THE RISK OF FATALITY WILL BE VERY HIGH. ARE YOU PREPARED TO DIE? THEN YOU ARE A CANDIDATE FOR GOING.’ – ELON MUSK

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk laid out his vision for human travel to Mars during a presentation at the 67th International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, on 27 September. Musk sees spacecraft holding 100 or more passengers voyaging to Mars within the next decade, with fares starting at about $200 000 (about R2.8 million). A trip to the Red Planet could take between 80 and 150 days, said Musk, depending on the positions of Earth and Mars at the time of launch.

Video chat may seem fairly modern, but it’s actually been available in the US since 1970. AT&T’s Picturephone offered users 30 minutes of video chat for $160/month – a prohibitively high cost at the time.

Want IMAX to install a private theatre in your home? You can have it done – provided you have about $400 000 (R6.1 million) to spend. This will buy you the Palais system for 75m 2 theatres.

ALL ABOARD FOR AI On 28 September, tech giants Google/DeepMind, Facebook, Amazon, IBM and Microsoft joined forces to create a new non-profit group called The Partnership on Artificial Intelligence to Benefit People and Society. The group’s mission is to develop and promote new artificial intelligence (AI) technology, conducting research, and recommending best practices and work to advance the public’s understanding of AI. It’s a strange mix of companies – usually fierce competitors – and it’s expected to grow as companies like Apple consider coming on board as well. But the collaboration makes sense. After all, if all of the participating companies are independently investing billions in AI research, why not pool their resources? For more about AI and other technological trends, turn to page 24.

WHAT’S HOT

At the end of September, Microsoft announced that 400 million active machines are now running the Windows 10 operating system.

Kiara Nirghin, a 16-year-old South African student at St Martin’s School in Johannesburg, recently won the $50 000 (about R700 000) overall prize at the 2016 Google Science Fair. Putting the DIY volcano that most of us built for our highschool projects into perspective, Kiara developed a low-cost, super-absorbent polymer (SAP) made out of a bio-waste mixture. This new SAP will keep crops hydrated for longer, at a significantly lower cost. Just what southern Africa needs, as the region experiences its worst drought in more than 20 years.

FACEBOOK’S ICE-COOL DATA CENTRE Ask any techie and they’ll tell you: the biggest challenge with running a data centre is keeping the servers from overheating. Facebook came up with a creative solution, that founder/CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently shared with his nearly 82 million Facebook followers – storing those servers in a seriously cold part of seriously cold Sweden! ‘The small town of Luleå is less than 70 miles (112.7km) south of the Arctic Circle, and it’s typically pretty cold,’ Zuckerberg said. ‘The temperature in the area is below 50 degrees (10°C) most days, so we use large fans to pull in the outside air to naturally cool the thousands of warm servers that line the centre’s broad hallways.’ According to Zuckerberg, the whole system is 10% more efficient and uses almost 40% less power than traditional data centres.

CLEAN UP YOUR SPACE

CubeSpace, a research team from Stellenbosch, has developed avionics to help two satellites (known as DebrisSats) remove space junk in orbit around the Earth. While the launch date hasn’t been finalised yet, the team is aiming to launch its CubeSats from the International Space Station some time next year. The CubeSats will function like a net, capturing and de-orbiting the space debris. They’ll have quite a job to do, though: according to NASA, more than 500 000 pieces of space junk are currently being monitored.

Lost your iPhone cover? No problem… Just print yourself a new one – and why not customise the design while you’re at it? With the XYZ Da Vinci All-in-One 3D printer (no. 11, R14 490), you scan an object, edit it on your computer, and then print out your own 3D item. You will also find hundreds of existing 3D models – everything from toys to tools – at http://us.gallery.xyzprinting.com. HOW IT WORKS The Da Vinci AiO uses a process called Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) to deposit heated filaments of thermoplastic on top of (or next to) each other, gradually building a solid 3D object. This printer uses the two most popular thermoplastics: acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polylactic acid (PLA). DIONWIRED | EDITION 2016 | 17

In August 2016, a smart South African app called Domestly was named MTN App of the Year. Designed to connect domestic workers with potential employers and operating in a similar way to Uber, it allows clients to choose from over 500 trusted and peer-reviewed cleaners. The app is easy to use and doesn’t just benefit employers – it also allows cleaners to manage their own schedule and receive reliable payment. No wonder it also walked away with the Best Consumer App award. In its first six months online, the mobile service reportedly created more than 600 jobs, and co-founders Thatoyoana Marumo and Berno Potgieters hope to create another 1 500 within the next year. It’s available for Android and iOS – visit www.domestly.com for more info or to download Domestly.

WHY YOU (STILL) NEED A GPS Sure, you have the app on your phone, and it gets you from A to B, but some things can be done only with a dedicated GPS – such as… 1. Detailed driver alerts. You’ll be prepared for anything from sharp curves, sudden speed changes and nearby red lights to speed cameras, school zones and animal crossings. 2. Real (landmark-based) directions. Think ‘Turn right after the purple building’ or ‘Turn left after Starbucks’.

3. Finding a place within a place. Looking for an entrance that’s closest to a particular store at the local mall? The Direct Access feature’s got you covered. 4. Pinpointing popular spots. Thanks to Foursquare’s functionality, this device comes preloaded with millions of restaurants, shops and other places of interest.

POWERING THE WORLD’S THINNEST LAPTOPS

THE NEXT BIG THINGS

They may sound futuristic, but technological innovations such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are already part of our everyday lives. Mark van Dijk explores what they are and how they’re set to make reality even better than, well‌ reality.

dw_30_32_tech_trends feature_v1_jj.indd 30

2016/11/02 12:07 PM

TECH the next big things

VIRTUAL REALITY what it is: VR creates an entirely new computergenerated ‘virtual’ environment that you experience through complete immersion. what it does: VR technology does not build on the world around you; it creates a new one – which could be a simulation of a realworld place or an entirely new world. how it works: When you wear Virtual Reality equipment (usually a wrap-around VR headset such as the Oculus Rift, or the cheaper Google Cardboard), you’re able to move and look around the artificial environment – up, down, left, right, behind and in front of you. With a VR headset and gloves, you are able to see, hear, touch and sometimes even smell virtual objects and the broader environment. where we are now: VR is about to get very big, very quickly. Google Cardboard, where you slip your smartphone into an easy-to-assemble cardboard box display unit, has made the technology fairly cheap and accessible, while a few global product launches have used it to showcase new real-life

offerings in virtual settings. Various car manufacturers, for example, have used VR to demonstrate their new vehicles’ driving experience, and a VR version of the popular computer game Minecraft is set to launch soon. what’s holding it back? Motion sickness, mostly. VR requires a huge amount of processing power, but its biggest stumbling block is the ‘cybersickness’ individuals experience from being in a disorientating environment. Early users have reported headaches, nausea and balance issues, which developers are struggling to work around. in the future… VR will expand from computer gaming to a wide range of fields, including surgical training (why practise on real people when you can practise on computers?); trade shows (why travel in person when you can attend them virtually?); property (why go to the open house when you can size the space up virtually – and do some virtual decorating while you’re there?), and beyond.

VIRTUAL REALITY IS ABOUT TO GET VERY BIG, VERY QUICKLY.

AUGMENTED REALITY what it is: As it says on the box, AR augments (or adds to) reality by superimposing computer-generated ‘virtual’ objects onto real-world environments in real time. what it does: Instead of replacing the world around you, AR adds to it. Think of the live scores at the top of your TV screen during a sports match, or the headsup display on a fighter pilot’s visor, or sports cars that have their speedometers projected onto their windshields. In each case, you need a screen of some kind, whether it’s a TV or smartphone screen, or a headset with lenses. how it works: To put it very simply, AR software reads the real-world environment and renders additional information based on what it detects. where we are now: Google introduced Google Glass in 2013, creating a wearable interface (a pair of glasses) to offer AR technology to the reader. Google Glass used a small projector to overlay images and videos onto the lenses.

The company pulled the plug on the project at the end of the 2015, but says it is working on a new version. Since then, Microsoft’s HoloLens has emerged as the next big step in AR. These AR-enhanced sunglasses allow wearers to bring Windows 10 apps into the real world, rendering 2D and 3D holograms into their environment. Meanwhile, Pokémon GO came along and dragged AR into the mainstream, with virtual treasures hidden in real-world locations, discoverable with mobile phones. what’s holding it back? Privacy concerns. Some critics of Google Glass worried that conversations or experiences could be recorded by shady hackers, while others said that facial-recognition software would turn every Google Glass wearer into an unwitting government spy. in the future… Analysts at Goldman Sachs Research reckon that AR will become an $80-billion (about R1 trillion) global industry. And that’s their worstcase prediction. >

AI INCLUDES ANY KIND OF AUTONOMOUS MACHINE – FROM A SELF-DRIVING CAR TO AN ONLINE SEARCH ENGINE LIKE GOOGLE. group photos you post on Facebook.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE what it is: The dictionary definition is any kind of intelligence that is demonstrated by a machine. Practically, AI refers to a computer that acts as an independent, rational agent, understanding its environment and taking actions that help it to achieve a goal. Think Apple’s Siri, Disney/Pixar’s Wall-E and the robots in Terminator whose mission it is to destroy all mankind. what it does: Whatever you ask it to do… or whatever it believes is

in the best interests of its master. But AI isn’t just about science-fiction robots; any piece of technology that can learn or predict behaviour qualifies as AI. This includes any kind of autonomous machine – from a self-driving car or selfpiloting drone to an online search engine like Google. how it works: AI draws on a wide range of fields, from

logic and psychology to mathematics, linguistics and economics. It’s an incredibly complex science. where we are now: AI is already part of our everyday lives. It’s in your voiceactivated digital personal assistant (Siri), in the real-time automated features on your new car, and in the software that automatically detects your friends in the

what’s holding it back? The overwhelming complexity of intelligence. To be truly ‘intelligent’, a machine must be able to plan, learn, reason, communicate, solve problems, use common sense, move, manipulate other objects, be creative and demonstrate social intelligence. Just like people. In 1950, British mathematician Alan Turing (who famously broke the Enigma Code) predicted that in the 21st century a computer would be advanced enough to convince at least 30% of people that they were in fact conversing (via text) with a human being. The first computer achieved this – fooling 33% of its interrogators – in 2014. in the future… For years, robotics experts have been predicting an event called ‘The Singularity’, where AI is so advanced that robots are at least as intelligent as humans. Most experts agree that’s still at least 25 years away.

how to take a great photo 1. Use a flash during the day outdoors. This may sound silly, but it really makes a difference. If it’s a very bright day and the sun is creating shadows, use your flash to fill them in.

2. Use the rule of thirds. Mentally divide your image into thirds, both vertically and horizontally. Then position the important elements in your photo scene along those lines, or at the points where they intersect.

3. Catch the golden hour. It comes around twice a day – just after sunrise and just before sunset. At these times, your subject will bask in a warm, golden light and the shadows will be lovely and long.

4. Be the director. Instead of being a passive phototaker, take charge of your pictures by choosing the location, possibly adding props and telling your subjects what you’d like them to do.

5. Buy books, not gear. Having the latest equipment doesn’t always mean you’ll take fabulous photos. Invest in some good photography books to inspire you and give you great ideas that you can apply to your own work.

how to buy a great travel bag Mind the materials: Soft bags fit more easily into overhead compartments, while hard ones provide better protection if you’re transporting something fragile. Either way, don’t compromise on quality.

1. Sennheiser Momentum over-ear headphones R5 990 2. Thule Gauntlet 3.0 R1 390 3. Thule 25L Crossover backpack R1 890

Compartmentalise: Pockets and pouches are handy when it comes to keeping your luggage organised – but too many can leave you rummaging desperately for a plane ticket while the queue piles up behind you. If it’s hand luggage, go for something with two compartments: a shallow one for the things you need in a hurry, and a deep one for books and magazines.

4. Samsonite Cosmolite Spinner 86cm suitcase (grey) R8 690, 75cm (red) R7 990

SAVVY TRAVELLER

Look on the bright side: Being understated has its time and place, but the luggage carousel isn’t one of them. If you’re stowing your bag, opt for something colourful to save time (and stress) when you disembark.

Never mind the destination. Life’s all about enjoying the journey – and that involves having the right stuff.

4

Get wheels: Because – let’s face it – pulling a heavy bag is much more comfortable than carrying one. Just make sure that the handle’s high enough for your height, and that the wheels are easy to manoeuvre. A four-wheeler is particularly handy when it comes to pushing your possessions down a narrow plane aisle. DIONWIRED | EDITION 2016 | 41

surf and turf Put your best foot forward on SA’s top coastal trails. 1. THE SWART TOBIE TRAIL Distance: 92km Duration: 5 days Beginning in Koekenaap (about a four-hour drive from Cape Town), this moderateto-strenuous slackpacking trail traverses the rugged West Coast. It’s best hiked between November and April, when the sea life is at its most visible.

2. THE WHALE TRAIL Distance: 54km Duration: 5 days The De Hoop Nature Reserve isn’t just breathtakingly beautiful; it’s one of the country’s best whale-watching spots. Between June and December each year, it isn’t uncommon to see more than 50 Southern Right Whales at one time.

3. THE OTTER TRAIL Distance: 43km Duration: 5 days Winding its way through the Tsitsikamma Forest, this is one of SA’s most iconic trails. Best hiked between September and March (but you’ll need to book about a year in advance), it requires a fairly high level of fitness – especially as you’ll be carrying your own backpack on this one.

4. THE HOERIKWAGGO TRAIL Distance: 88km Duration: 5 days This marvellous mountainous route leads hikers all the way from Cape Point to the centre of Cape Town. Departing every Sunday, it’s a beautiful, challenging journey with steep ups and downs.

5. THE PORT ST JOHNS TO COFFEE BAY HIKING TRAIL Distance: 60km Duration: 5 days Get far away from the city and discover the untouched beaches, rugged cliffs and steep green hills of the wild Wild Coast. This breathtaking trail offers hikers something truly unique, including accommodation in traditional Xhosa huts.

You can also seamlessly switch from music on your portable device to a ring from your phone, so you’ll never miss a call. Sweat-proof, super-lightweight and designed not to stick out from your ears, these guys deliver a powerful dose of great JBL sound – the perfect soundtrack for any sporting endeavour. They’re also wireless, provide eight hours of playback time, and come in a stylish range of different colours. And when your workout’s over, they’re easily cleaned. Type: In-ear, wireless Price: R1 490

Type: On-ear, wireless Price: R1 490

THE BIG FIVE When hunting for headphones, these are the questions that will help you home in on the perfect pair:

1. Do I want in-ear, on-ear or over-ear? In-ear options are portable and practical – but fitting them can be a little finicky. On-ear headphones are chunkier but funkier, while over-ear headphones are the chunkiest but come with noise-cancelling technology, making them ideal for business people who need high phone quality. 2. Do I need Bluetooth? Wireless headphones are on the rise, especially now that Apple has released the iPhone 7. 3. What do I need them for? Because different headphones cater for different kinds of people. 4. How important is sound quality? Is good enough – well – good enough, or do you want the best of the best? 5. How much do I want to spend? Headphone prices vary from a few hundred to a good few thousand.

Great sound doesn’t have to cost a fortune. The HD201’s lightweight construction is designed specifically for long home, studio or DJ sessions. The hypo-allergenic ear pads are comfortable all day, they come with a 3m-long cable, and the rugged materials can take a beating on the road or in transport. And the sound? 1. A Smeg gas stove. I love cooking, and I like the design, look and feel of the Smeg brand. A friend of mine has one and they seem so easy to use. I like to braai as well, so if there’s a fire, I’m happy. 2. An air fryer. I don’t enjoy cooking things in oil, and you can do anything from a good bockwurst to chips with one of these guys. Sure, chips are still filled with carbs, but minus all the oil, they’re relatively guilt-free. 3. A bean-to-cup cappuccino machine. I live on coffee and it tastes richer and fresher if you grind your beans directly. 4. The latest GoPro camera. I own my own B2B drone-building company, so an accessory like this is always a win. 5. netflix vs. showmax Two media-streaming services are finally available in South Africa… but what’s the difference between them? Cost: Subscribing to ShowMax will cost you R99 per month, while Netflix has three price tiers – none in rands, so the price will fluctuate with the exchange rate and is currently the most expensive VOD (video on demand) service in SA. Having said that, Netflix offers a free one-month trial, while ShowMax offers only seven days. Content: Each option has the rights to a number of shows that aren’t available on the other, so there’s no clear winner here. The rights to certain hit shows are owned by MultiChoice, for example, so you won’t find them on Netflix SA. Ideally, have more than one subscription to view more content. Quality: Netflix has superior video-streaming quality and, in terms of sound, ShowMax offers only stereo mix, while Netflix offers 5.1 surround sound. Platform support: Netflix has become a must-have on most computers, tablets, phones and smart TVs, with apps on almost any connected device. ShowMax works on only Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, as well as certain manufacturers’ smart devices (Samsung, LG and HiSense Smart TVs). Usability: Netflix appears to be better organised, better looking and more user-friendly than ShowMax, but it lacks the option to download something for later viewing. ShowMax app users can download up to 25 shows on Apple and Android devices and keep them for 30 days.

It may seem like a far-off date in the sci-fi future, but 2030 is really just 13 years away. Thanks to smart devices and the Internet of Things (IoT), your life – and your living room – will be completely different by then. Mark van Dijk finds out how.

6 THINGS YOU WON’T HAVE TO DO AT HOME BY 2030 1. write grocery lists Good news: by the year 2030, the ordeal of scribbling a shopping list before you head out on the grocery run will be a distant memory. Instead, your clever fridge will do the thinking for you. It’ll be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT): a network of machines and physical devices that communicate with each other and share data and information about the user and the environment. This means your fridge will analyse what’s inside it and do a real-time stocktake of what you need. It’ll be able to predict what you want to buy, assess what you’re missing, and collate that into a shopping list for you.

3. look for car keys In the year 2030, you’ll be able to search for physical items using a real-world search engine. Certain apps are already piloting this technology, using augmented reality (AR) to identify those lost car keys by their name and context. Thanks to the AR interface, the app/device will find what you’re looking for as well as make suggestions for related activities. So if you’re looking for your car keys, it will tell you where your keys are, and also – using integrated IoT technology – tell you if your car needs to have its battery recharged.

2. turn up the heat According to trends analysis firm Gartner, by the year 2022, the typical family household will be equipped with about 500 connected devices – all of which will be hooked up to the internet. Your appliances will communicate with each other via a central hub (such as your TV or smartphone), using sensors to detect what’s happening and what needs to change for optimal comfort. So, by monitoring how hot/cold/stuffy your space is, and crossreferencing that with your preferred environment and body temperature, your air-con will be able to set itself…

4. turn on the lights Your household lights will contain smart, wireless bulbs that will switch themselves on when you enter the room, says futurist Thomas Frey. They’ll brighten or dim and change colour at your whim. Within the next decade or so, companies such as Philips and Belkin will roll out the next big step, Li-Fi (light fidelity), which will use light waves to transmit data, rather than Wi-Fi’s radio waves. Because the visible light spectrum is 10 000 times bigger than the radio-wave spectrum, Li-Fi will offer greater bandwidth, plus your data will travel at the speed of light.

5. clean your space Imagine a robotic vacuum cleaner that uses built-in lasers to scan your lounge and autonomously map out a back-and-forth pattern before cleaning up the room while detecting and avoiding objects in real time. Sound like the future? Actually, affordable robotic vacuum cleaners have been around since at least 2010. By the year 2030, however, that technology will have advanced exponentially, meaning that some of the features that we consider cutting-edge today (such as an ability to operate in the dark, or mapping technology that allows the device to quietly navigate its way back to its recharging station) will be standard features.

6. set your pvr With today’s self-produced content (SnapChat), on-demand clips (YouTube), unscheduled binge-viewing (Netflix and ShowMax), and uninterrupted content streaming (your PVR’s Catch-up list), the concept of ‘appointment viewing’ on TV is already pretty much dead. But, despite the changes in how you watch TV, by 2030, your TV will be more important than ever. Samsung has already announced that its 2016 Smart TV range will be IoT-ready, making the internetconnected TV the hub of your connected home.
