BUBBLE/STRIP 01 + An avant-garde fashion runway for an industry where cutting edge aesthetics push the boundaries of style and taste; weightless structures settled along secluded and scenic shores of RARE allow for a quiet backdrop to loud entrances. Strong lines rip through the hemispherical domes, guiding fashionistas to a head-on encounter with a runway that dominates the scene as it floats above the water’s surface. High fashion is placed on a pedestal, separated by the shoreline. Inspired by initial photographic studies of the behaviour bubbles in a stream, a series of investigations on tension in threads and fabrics leads to the development of fabric tensegrity; a perfect cover for a fashion center. Evolving models reflect the progressive understanding and creative utilization of tensegrity concepts: threemember tensegrity simplexes - forming the truss-like platform - evolve into complex fabric-based tensegrity networks. Formed from such lightweight members, it is possible for the utilization of the bubble flats as a temporary or travelling structure which neither confines nor sequesters the platform or performance. A study of tensegrity concepts and a foray into potential creative architectural implementations.

FALLEN/LEAVES 02 + A monument design for the Mississauga City Hall. A quick design brief (one evening) developing a monument aims to honor the war veterans of Canada. The concept embraced was one that did not just highlight the individual heroes, but celebrated the collective of canadians, their sacrifices, and the nation they fought for. This understated design of the monument revolves around the metaphor of fallen leaves: to poetically symbolize the war heroes with a simple maple leaf, a strong canadian symbol. Each leaf is etched or marked with a message from a loving family member or well-wisher, then attached to the monument wall: a flowing tapestry of warm messages.

the exterior of the monument remains nondescript. nestled into a set of stairs, the bending walls cut into the existing hardscaping, creating a sculptural piece: strong, silent, and monumental. the walls enwrap an ovular space, creating a private space for contemplation and reflection. working with the existing stairs, the monument nestles a place for seating, and frames a slice of the sky with the mosaic of leaves.

GOOD/READ 03 + Designing a booth for the book fair. Amidst a growing trend of intellectually hollow celebrity publications and model photo books, a grassroots publisher requested a unique booth design for the HK Book Fair. Consulting with the publisher personally, I was given complete design freedom, and worked to produce a creative display that was both formally playful and an homage to the heritage of reading.

drawing inspiration from a stack of books, the booth is developed with a striated form. a large bubble screen allows for perusers to input short written messages, providing an interactive element for the book-savvy audience. lighting fixtures were developed from an assortment of the publisher’s feature covers, and resulted in a handcrafted woven lightscape. the rear wall is postered with a historical mural of children sharing comic books, with matching benches for a quick rest and a dose of history. the Hong Kong Book Fair brought in over 900000 visitors to over 500 exhibitions. this design was selected by numerous HK magazines as the best booth at HKBF/09.

NINETY/SIX 04 + A downtown lobby revamp. Following a casual office charrette for the redesign of a building lobby, I came back with my own proposal for 96 Spadina, which sought to create a fresh and vibrant face for this popular, but colorless street face. This scheme was well received and selected for further development and subsequent presentation.

the design of the lobby incoroporates two design moves. the flowing ribbons, referencing the building’s historical roots as a fabric manufacturing facility, creates moments for seating, ripples for lighting, and reveals for heating. the large 96, which, through vinyl wall applications and colored carpeting, stretches through the space, creating an exterior focal point; a strong new icon for the building.

XYZ/BLOCK 05 + An office tower proposal for the heart of Toronto’s University district, adjacent to Queen’s Park. This project, with a mixed program of cultural amenities and leased office space, takes the conventional podium+tower combination and flips it horizontally, creating opportunities for laterally oriented spaces as opposed to vertically orphaned floor plates. The XYZ form is the resultant of rethinking the tower; redeveloping the space from studies of human experience to create human scaled towers. Rather than a study of experimental form, this studio was geared towards developing concise drawing techniques and efficient laying out of variegated program requirements.

XYZ’s experiential sequencing began with a study of human flow through the existing site, which resulted in an internalized circulation scheme based on the concept of infuse/defuse. this broken Z is topped by horizontal towers, Y then X, cranked to catch sunlight and frame views.

the varying floor plates within the shell of the structure provides opportunities for unique floor configurations and shifting doubleheighted spaces. each X and Y block is connected internally by an atrium core with a grand staircase in addition to the necessary elevator core.

the program types are separated by orientation/form and the material/porosity of the bar configurations. at the podium level, the perimeter bars housing public amenities have a monolithic concrete treatment while the equally monolithic art gallery tucked within is highlighted in red corten steel. the office floors perched above consist of a lighter steel structural frame masked by a gradient of fritted glass.

FERRIS/WHEEL 06 + A Ferris wheel and a department store. Unsatisfied with the direction of their current design, a Chinese developer sought another option for a shopping centre in the heart of Louyang. With the foundation in process and a client eager to push the build, this design proposal was a quickfire challenge spanning only a week. Expecting multiple design options, I was given the opportunity to develop a scheme of my own; I chose to introduce an organically sculpted form to complement a rooftop ferris wheel. This option was a startling proposal, pulling the client in an unexpected direction and was subsequently selected for construction. It is currently moving towards the design development stage, and is tentatively looking towards completion in 2014.

with limited time, developing a building that is entirely parametrically scripted allows for fluidity as well as flexibility for quick modification in modelling and presentation. the design moves are also simple: the base form is a simple rectangular box, while a series of sectional curves provides a trimming loft to form a flowing interior canyon supported and accentuated by curving structural ribs. The ferris wheel carves the skylight and atrium voids, while providing the generative point for a green roof garden defined by an underlaying Voronoi scatter.

07 + The A3 Salerno Highway, a 10km stretch between Scilla and Bagnara, provides an incredible opportunity for a ribbon of green parkland to crown the coast; a tourist site and a wildlife sanctuary. Capitalizing on the rough coastal topography for solar and wind energy, Solar Park South will showcase future sustainable technologies. Taking advantage of key geological features, five nodes will initiate the revampment, while acting as a foci from which additional programme will spread, creating flexible public spaces: educational facilities, exhibitions, and public amenities. Between the nodes, canopies and rib structures from reused local materials, along with vegetation path structures will be installed in phases, generating experimental zones for researchers to test and develop sustainable technologies and materials. The hard path will evolve into a soft parkscape, shedding its vehicular usage to create a truly iconic public amenity/technology hotbed. initially, five nodes along the path will be developed to implement renewable energies within the infrastructures: wind power in the canyons - integrated under the Favazzina bridge and in a new hotel structure on Sfalassa bridge; solar energy at the two highest points – a chapel incorporating a heliostat tower and an elaborate pv canopy; and at the lowest point (near scilla), a geothermal campsite. the nodes will be paired with research facilities, housed in adjacent tunnels. sketch01 + sketch02 + site use analysis + typical path segment

akin to growing organisms, the path will overtake the existing road over time, gathering and housing new technologies as it expands and reintegrates the natural landscape; the ‘degredation’ of the highway. vegetation will overtake structure, promoting the return of wildlife. subsequently, public use will flourish; amenities promoting hiking, cycling, and camping will further garner tourism and highlight the potence of sustainability.

Buildings floating in a park. For a masterplan to redesign a monotonously typical city block in Luoyang - endless rows of sunlight-choking residential slab towers - a proposal was devised to introduce a splash of color and bring the park to the forefront. Taking the Chinese peony, a rolling landscape of petal-shaped strips, delineated by meandering pathways and ponds, weaves together the interior and exterior both in plan and section, accommodating commercial/inhabitated/cultivated spaces. Initially, several schemes were developed as part of a team, but having shown creative promise whilst impressing the client with a radical proposition, I was given the opportunity/responsibility to develop the majority of the proposal independently. This gave me freedom to experiment freely, articulating and modelling the built/landscape with the fluid style I have developed in previous academic projects, while introducing parametric scripting to the design repertoire of the firm. the initial plan is derived from a network of paths, carving out gentle patches of peony planting, grass, and heavily forested areas. from this, several edges are pulled up to reveal retail spaces, while a central mound houses a sweeping library buried amongst trees. the resultant dynamic terrain is accentuated by a series of pond features, connecting the corners of the site.

to create a builtscape to match the fluid landscape below, the utilization of parametric design tools facilitated the design process. designating an editable doubly curved surface for both the roof plane and base plane, along with three sets of outlines - floor plate and top/bottom balcony profiles - sixteen buildings with continuous undulating balconies could be orchestrated in unison to create a unified skyline while constantly outputting per building statistics and site density calculations.

the resultant proposal proved to be a cohesion of fluid form and experiential articulation, creating a dynamic but harmonious built/landscape that experimented playfully whilst attaining required design parameters with the aid of parametric scripting.
CHAIR/SCAPE 09 + A waterside installation. Summers in Cambridge are blazing hot and wonderfully sunny, but aside from the stray fisherman, the riverside has been largely forgotten. Due in large to its concrete-banked walls, the Grand River has been severed from the urban fabric despite its historic impact; the CHAIR/SCAPE draws people back to the waters. In creating a landscape installation, the intent was not to create an architectural piece, but to bring out the qualities of the site. There are two elements in contrast: a sod path and a chairscape. The path reflects our society’s fascination with green; the most natural element appear to be the grass, though it acts to negate the texture of the site by blanketing it with an artificial green. The chairs, coincidentally, are obvious manmade structures; slight modifications render them complementary to the inherent topography of the shore - a natural fit.

led by my design partner, Taehyung Kim, and I, the installation is an orechestra of site studies and construction. the siting of the chairs takes the observed social qualties of the site. the north half creates an inwardly focused circle - this is a social spot where chairs cluster. the south is outwardly focused - these are contemplative areas where chairs are scattered and take advantage of individual experiences and views.

VOID/VOID 10 + The art and the intervention ties in the delicate balance between life and death found within the mausoleum. The contemporary art piece, “Equilibrium” by Gino de Dominicis, was chosen because it represents a precise balance: a summation of the complex mathematical and visually rational perfection that Antique artists sought in their work. The intervention creates equilibrium with the above architecture; if the dome and ambulatory spaces form hierarchies of light, then the reflected ‘pit’ utilizes the same principles to create hierarchies of dark. INFINITE/HILLS 11 + The design of a museum of the Tiber River, to be located on the edge of the Tiber accommodating the existing ruins of the Arsenale. Revived from its current state of abandonment amongst a patchwork of shanties, dumps, and ancient scooter parts, the Arsenale - like an artifact creating turbulence in a flowing river - acts as the generation point for a roiling network of hills and the regeneration of Porta Portuense. As this project was done during the Rome study term, inspiration was taken from the diverse tapestry of ancient Roman sculpted form from both sculpture and architecture. This initiated the study of folded interior/exterior spaces, and into the monad, a concept proposed by Leibniz: a self-contained and finite world – a fragment of a larger, potentially infinite cosmos. The museum, as the monad, exudes a pure interiority, whereby an explosion of activity creates an internal pressure exuding potential energy. This questions the meaning of surface, and depicts the exterior as a subtle reaction to the power of the interior. INFINITE/HILLS removes the delineation of surfaces; there are no walls, floors, ceilings, or rooms, but a continuously flowing surface creating a continually circulating stream of procession. working with the Baroque concept of folds, monads, and an inner energy of the Earth, the museum mutates the landscape in its vicinity as a river shapes its bed. starting from sketches and working with physical study models, the form, the plan, and the landscape inform one another stongly, as one volume directly influences the other. the undulating form buries the building into the slope, revealing the museum only at points where it tears away from the landscape to create apertures: entrances and light wells. as a physical representation of the lively waters of the Tiber River, the form is light and continually rolling in on itself.

the plan of the interior is completely fluid, weaving the user through the museum; it is not generated by an external grid or structural system, but by a study of the experiences. a palette of exhibition types was developed to accommodate the programs while assimilating the aesthetics and forms of the hills and the context: dissected hillscapes, weaving paths, the sections of the arsenale, and the datum of the city. through articulation of the folded section and exhibition displays, the museum is derived from perspectives and interior experiential qualities rather than a strong exterior form or plan. this creates a rather subtle landscape structure, but a compelling and meandering procession.

An interfaith community chapel for the city of cambridge. In this final studio project, the design of a community centred building takes not only a formal approach, but a strong foray into technical research and sustainable design. For this proposal, inspiration was taken to return the inevitable (but oft forgotten) funeral rites to a personal and beautiful ritual. Capturing the concept of procession - a fundamental ritual amongst most religions, be it for marital ceremonies or funeral marches - iterations of physical and digital models begin to map the congealing swirls of processional circulation augering into the earth. Foregoing the typical stack of floor levels and partitions, the ebb consists of a flowing internal landscape sheltered by a similarly undulating roofscape - winding together the chapelscape with a reading cafe and guest suites, The controlling element in the development of the textures of ebb are derived from the concept of haptic architecture - the rejection of a pure aesthetic (retinal) for the development of a complete sensory experience.

the built form is guided by the elements of light - apertures into the fluid form offsets dark passageways - and of texture soft mosses to warm concrete to rough wood fixtures that touch and interaction - and of an altered sense of
carved - from invite scale.

the introduction of common fixtures required that they not only fit the experience but enhance the sensory narrative; this required some novel reconceptions. the WCs (or Water Columns), utilizes a multitude of sensors and electronic equipment in order to facilitate a purely automatic sequence, removing all physical interaction. this contrasts the wood antechamber, where large but stark sections of trees create ambiguous furniture meant specifically to be felt and to be climbed.

the zenith of the procession is reached at the fabric chapel. within an organically formed, but still rigidly plastic shell of the building, the articulation of a breathing and etherealy diaphanous inner shell gives true fluidity to interior spaces. the chapel, with the aid of of motorized assemblies, inhales and exhales to expand a space perhaps for an exuberant wedding - or embrace it - perhaps for a private funeral.

in tackling the technical obstacles of detailing a free-formed and notably atypical building structure, novel material usage was necessary. to achieve a good R-value while maintaining a strong monolithic build, the use of a 2-pour reinforced shell was conceived: a 300mm Liapor structural shell with a secondary Perlite insulative layer over a dense rebar frame.

ASyLuM/001 13 + A lunar escape. In a world where the basic cost to live is ballooning, the very concept of life on Earth is no longer taken for granted: it is a luxury. When the planet strides towards critical mass and the cost of maintenance for natureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beauty becomes too large for the majority to swallow, the previously exorbitant is now unfortunately pragmatic; it is both cheaper and more effective to displace the majority. Rather than require those who are most able to remedy this problem to flee the Earth and squander its abundant givings, the Class 01 elite and skilled must shoulder the responsibility for all Earth citizens. Stewardship of our home planet is essential; the Class <02 citizens - the 99% - will be temporarily but gracefully relocated to allow the Earth a fallow season. While drastic, this becomes the obvious preemptive action required considering that the limited supplies of the Earth can be most effectively rationed - respective, of course, to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worth - and thus recovered/ replenished, when said supply is managed closely by and doled out from said capable Class. Without waste and without excess, but not without comforts, this terralunar umbilicus will be established to maintain the sustenance and well-being of the estranged Classes during this phase of mutual sacrifice in the name of the Earth. The cost of saving the planet is dear, but for the gratuity of the Class 01, all Class <02 citizens of the Earth will be gratiously provided refuge in the temporary - but nonetheless masterfully crafted - network of lunar havens. When we promote environmental awareness whilst denying personal or societal responsibility, the global trend of over-consumption and over-waste - offset by “green” conscience band-aids - has rendered us inured and desensitized to the looming realities of an Earthly cataclysm. By the dusk of the 21st century, our general despondency has hurtled us towards an inevitable tipping point; the worst is not yet to come, but a target we are consciously accelerating towards. After a dramatic century of tumultuous weather patterns - a conflicting barrage of heat waves, cold snaps, droughts, floods, catastrophic storms, and climatic anomalies - the wailing death throes of a taxed Earth goes not unheard, but unheeded; a victim of a consensual procrastination. The next stage of a millions-year cycle is prematurely spurred: Snowball Earth. Characterized by a deep freeze and subsequent global coverage with a stifling strata of ice, previous human networks of easy transport and instantaneous communication has been replaced by glacial drifts of an inversely crawling pace. A mode of self-preservation akin to a planetary coma, the end of the 21st century is also the end of preventative measures - let alone of lax comfort and excess - and the onset of man’s dire struggle for survival against an Ice Age catharsis. ICE/SYLUM is the prototypical ark for a doomed race. Without foresight to instigate change, we may at least manage to augur our roots deep and hope the storm may pass us over. ICE/SYLUM is planted in the Arctic ice, taking advantage of the fact that, while the world will be devastated by an impenetrable envelope of ice, the Arctic will, relatively, be little changed. Life, rather than existing on the surface of the Earth, will be inverted onto the underside of ice, where water is the only available method of fluid transport, and, when more broadly considered, the only feasible source of survival. Lost in a timeless crawl, the ICE/SYLUM is a desperate means for an apathetic society.

the megastructure is derived from a coiling spiral auguring itself into the ice shelf. the main spiral is a heavily planted residential platform, while a secondary spiral houses the services. encased in a heavy plated shell, controlled pores allow for a means of expelling waste, while a larger base aperture provides access to the water for intake of underwater resources for construction/energy - scavenged from the remains of past cities - and food.

topped by a bowl of public gathering space (auditorium) with the capability to host large-scale venues, the spiral hosts the residential blocks amidst a forest of cultivated plants. urban-farming is a necessity rather than a novelty, and dually acts to cleanse the air and provide a renewable source of oxygen. within this medium, inhabitants/refugees form organic clusters of housing - like sprawling favelas - desperately reaching for the artificial sun. this light pillar, the only marker of time, glows and wanes in a circadian pulse.
