TULSI Kannada Name - Tulasi Scientific Name - Ocimum Sanctum Also known as Holy Basil in English, the Indian herbal plant Tulsi has a lot of significance in the Hindu religion. The term “Tulsi� is used in the context of one who is absolutely incomparable. The Hindus have a lot of reverence for Tulsi. In fact, people worship Tulsi everyday in the morning as well as evening time. This Indian basil basically grows in the warm and tropical regions. There are two main varieties of this aromatic plant, namely Shyama Tulsi and Rama Tulsi. Out of the two, the former one is of greater medicinal value. Rama Tulsi, on the hand, is primarily used for worship.

NEEM Kannada Name - Bevinamara Scientific Name - Azadirachta Indica Also known as Nimtree, and Indian Lilac, Neem is a tree in the mahogany family Meliaceae. It is typically grown in tropical and semi-tropical regions. Neem trees now also grow in islands in the southern part of Iran. Its fruits and seeds are the source of neem oil. Neem products are believed by Ayurvedic practitioners to be anthelmintic, antifungal, antidiabetic, antibacterial, antiviral, contraceptive and sedative. However, insufficient research has been done to assess the proper benefits of neem. In adults, short-term use of neem is safe, while long-term use may harm the kidneys or liver; in small children, neem oil is toxic and can lead to death. Neem may also cause miscarriages, infertility, and low blood sugar.

LEMON GRASS Kannada Name - Nimbehullu Scientific Name - Cymbopogon Citratus This type of tall grass is native to warm temperate and tropical regions of India, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. It is widely used as a herb in Asian cuisine and also as medicinal herb in India. It has a subtle citrus flavor and can be dried and powdered, or used fresh. It is commonly used in teas, soups, and curries. It is also suitable for use with poultry, fish, beef, and seafood. It is often used as a tea in African countries. Lemongrass oil is used as a pesticide and a preservative. Research shows that lemongrass oil has antifungal properties. Despite its ability to repel insects, its oil is commonly used as a “lure” to attract honey bees. Lemongrass works similarly to the pheromone created by the honeybee’s Nasonov gland, also known as attractant pheromones. Because of this, lemongrass oil can be used as a lure when trapping swarms or attempting to draw the attention of hived bees.

HIBISCUS Kannada Name - Dasavala Scientific Name - Hibiscus Rosa-Sinensis Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, known colloquially as Chinese hibiscus, China rose, Hawaiian hibiscus and shoe flower is a species of flowering plant in the Hibisceae tribe of the family Malvaceae, native to East Asia. It is widely grown as an ornamental plant throughout the tropics and subtropics. As it does not tolerate temperatures below 10 째C (50 째F), in temperate regions it is best grown under glass. Numerous varieties, cultivars, and hybrids are available, with flower colors ranging from white through yellow and orange to scarlet and shades of pink, with both single and double sets of petals.

BUTTERFLY PEA Kannada Name - Aparajita Scientific Name - Clitoria Ternatea Clitoria ternatea, common names include Butterfly pea, Blue pea, Cordofan pea and Asian pigeonwings, is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae family. The flowers of this vine have the shape of human female genitals, hence the Latin name of the genus “Clitoria”, from “clitoris”. It is grown as an ornamental plant and as a revegetation species (e.g., in coal mines in Australia), requiring little care when cultivated. As a legume, its roots form a symbiotic association with soil bacteria known as rhizobia, which transform atmospheric N2 into a plant usable form, therefore, this plant is also used to improve soil quality through the decomposition of N-rich tissue.

FALSE DAISY Kannada Name - Bringharaja Scientific Name - Eclipta Alba Eclipta Alba grows abundantly in the tropics and is used with success in Ayurvedic medicine. Bhringaraj was used by Hindus in their Shradh, the ceremony for paying respect to a recently deceased person. This plant is one of the Hindu’s “Ten Auspicious Flowers” and is sometimes called, “the king of hair.” Bhringraj is mainly used in hair oils, but it has been considered a good drug in hepatotoxicity. In hair oils, it may be used alongwith Centela asiatica (Brahmi) and Phyllanthus emblica (Amla). It may be used to prevent habitual abortion and miscarriage and also in cases of post-delivery uterine pain. A decoction of leaves is used in uterine haemorrhage. The juice of the plant with honey is given to infants with castor oil for expulsion of worms. For the relief in piles, fumigation with Eclipta alba is considered beneficial. The paste prepared by mincing fresh plants has got an anti-inflammatory effect and may be applied to insect bites, stings, swellings and other skin diseases.

AMLA Kannada Name - Nelanelli Scientific Name - Phyllanthus Amarus Phyllanthus emblica, also known as emblic, Indian gooseberry or amla from Sanskrit amalika, is a deciduous tree of the family Phyllanthaceae. It is known for its edible fruit of the same name. The tree is considered sacred by Hindus as the Vishnu is believed to dwell here. The tree is worshipped on Amalaka Ekadashi.
