With its ancient history and cultural heritage in literature, art and music, Nagorno-Karabakh is an integral part of Azerbaijan. World’s famous museums such as the Victoria and Albert, the Louvre and many others in Berlin, Rome, Istanbul and Cairo have exhibited the pieces of the Karabakh folk art.
The region of Karabakh is famous for its music and mugham. The music of Kara bakh, which has enriched the music culture of Azerbaijan with its rare gems of music, has centuries-old traditions. Mughams, popular songs, dances, and ashuq have their special place in Karabakh’s music art.
A selection of Azerbaijani mugham, played on the Azerbaijani wind instrument balaban, was included among many cultural achievements of humanity on the Voyager Golden Record, which was attached to the Voyager spacecraft to represent world music.
In 2003, UNESCO recognized mugam as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
