INDEX In the Commercial advance studio courses, the designs of upscale, global, corporate interior reflect the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research, programming, preliminary design development and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, wayfinding techniques and specifying corporate furnishings, finishes and material. Environmental issues concerning interior designers and the construction industry are also discussed. Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) analysis, the projects implement sustainable design methods technically and creatively.

COMMERCIAL

Residential senior level studio courses cover the physical and psychological factors that impact residential environments. The courses explore various kinds of residential dwellings as they relate to different inhabitants. Project work applies to programming and design development phases of the residential design process, including information gathering, need analysis, concept and spatial development and FF&E selections based on research and client requirements.

RESIDENTIAL

SPECIALTY

Specialty Design senior level studio courses cover the physical and psychological factors that impact hospitality environments. The course content centers on the inter-relationships between the elements of three dimensional space planning, FF&E selections, contract specification and detailing within hospitality environments. Students are expected to graphically demonstrate original and viable solutions. RESTAURANT DESIGN JIVA

A perfect setting for the communion of the mind and body, “JIVA” is an invitation to journey into the Self, where the five elements of nature, Air, Water, Earth, Fire and Ether embrace you here. Simplicity and purity, saluting local ethos and heritage, Jiva finds its expression in Yoga, Ayurveda and Holistic cuisine inspired by Indian and global flavors to refresh the body and soothe away frazzled city nerves. The hotel is hypothetically located in Jodhpur, India. The city is also referred to as the “Sun city” for the bright sunny weather it enjoys all year round. Jodhpur is also referred to the “Blue City” due to the vivid painted blue houses around the Merangarh Fort. Embracing the cultural aspect of the location, the Trellis was created as a focal point within the restaurant. The Blue color palate, the lighting and the furniture derive inspiration from the city, its culture and the local handicrafts popular to the region.

After careful research and analyses of the location, the demographics and culture, a brand was created for the restaurant, focused on offering services in a comfortable, intimate and welcoming setting. Careful consideration of the existing restraints, like the columns, was taken to ensure proper traffic patterns.

Universal design principles were applied. The raised bar was also made wheel chair accessible via a ramp. Direct line of sight was blocked to the kitchen through creative space shaping techniques. All materials and finishes chosen were of Contract quality appropriate for outdoor use, to meet or exceed fire codes.

BRANDING Hand sketches

G

The Branding Strategy uses the Lotus and the Sun Motif as an inspiration. The city of Jodhpur is often referred to as “The Sun City” due to the bright sunny weather it enjoys. The Lotus flower is the National flower of India and is found growing in abundance in the ponds and lakes throughout the region. Stylized presentation of the Sun and the Lotus flower are seen all over the city, evident in the arts, handicrafts and monuments of the region. Using the stylized form of the Lotus radiating out from the geometrical representation of the Sun and playing with the Positive / Negative space, Foreground / Background and Height / Depth variations, various forms were created and designed.

Produced in Google SketchUp

Being an outdoor restaurant in a sunny city, the final creation was used to design a custom Trellis which would not only be functional, but also serve as the main focal point within the space.

Inspired by the local Handicrafts of the region, Block Printed, Contract quality fabrics, suitable for the outdoor environment, are used for throw pillows. The Custom Pendant lights, over the six seater circular booths, carved of brass, featuring the “Jali” pattern, a common architectural element of the hotel, embrace and echo the rich culture and craftsmanship of the region.

Custom Booths at Jiva are designed to give its clients a fine dining experience as well as to be a grand focal point of the restaurant. The structure of the booth is built with standard lumber to create a frame. The frame consists of horizontal members, one at the bottom attached to the floor, called the bottom or the sole plate and one at the top called the top plate. These horizontal members are connected by vertical pieces called studs installed at 12o.c. Panels are attached to the studs with nails, screws, bolts or rivets. Wood planks are used to give a finish look for the partition panels and stone veneer for the planters.
