BEST BEAUTY PICKS AND HOW TO ACHIEVE THEM! Search for Beauty Suppliers

1 Headpieces Whether it’s a floral arrangement, bejewelled headband or an intricate origami styled piece, headpieces are big this year and are the perfect cherry to top a formal dress. Blair Waldorf is the original queen of the headbands but more celebs like Alexa Chung have jumped on the trend with some new creative styles. D.I.Y tip: You can attach faux flowers to a headband to create this style or add studs for an edgier look.

2 All that glitters Gold and Bronze tones for makeup were splashed all across Fashion Week for Spring. This makeup 8 | www.highschoolformals.com.au

style is the perfect substitute for a heavy smoky eye in the summery months when you want a fresher look. Simply sweep some bronze on the top lid and line the lower lash line with some gold and glitter tones. Top off the look with a heavy dose of bronzer and you’ve got the look. For a more subtle style, keep eyes neutral and just highlight your inner v’s of your eyes with a gold shadow for a look that will make eyes pop.

3 Tying it up Plaits and Braids have made a comeback. Aussie designers Sass and Bide sported some funky braids on the runway this season and celebs like Blake Lively are rocking the loose side plait. This is such a cute and practical choice for the formal

formals yearbook 2012

because your hair will stay put for the night, will be out of your face and sitting perfectly for every photo. For the not so daring girls who still want to try this trend a small front braid through a side fringe is a cute and easy option. This look is super simple to create, just sweep hair to side and loosely plait. For a California cool look, use different thicknesses in the pieces of hair and pull plait out to create volume.

4 Statement Lips In every Fashion Week in 2010 we saw a rainbow of colours on models lips on and off the runway and we expect that to continue into 2011. Statement lips are perfect for Spring and Summer and the colour choice is endless. Opt for a Coral or Peach tone if you want to play it safe but fun. A Scarlet hue works well on every girl (you just have to find the right shade!). And a punchy berry or wine colour is stunning if you

feel like playing this style up. Matte can look fab if you have a good lip liner and gloss looks great in photos- both are perfect for a girly formal look.

5 Beehive Take a note out of Drew Barrymore’s book and get some volume in your tresses. The beehive is back, like all things retro, and hairdressers for the runway shows are playing around with fly aways, texture and shine. This look is really simple and cute and looks great with any style of dress for a school formal. After washing hair apply a volume boosting mousse and blow dry hair flat with a paddle brush pulling hair up to the crown. Leaving the front section out, backcomb hair in sections around the crown apply hairspray and tie up. Take the smooth front piece of hair that was left out and pull over the backcombed hair securing with bobby pins or a hair clip.

FORMAL READY SKIN

“ Looking after your skin is important all year round and the formal season is no time to slack off with your beauty routine. You’ll want to be looking your best with radiant, healthy skin in all the millions of photos that are being taken!” Deseo Bridal and Evening Shoes www.deseo.com.au Phone: 02 8668 4541

Deseo is a concept store founded in 2006 offering an impressive range of designer bridal and evening shoes at realistic prices. Deseo’s extensive collection has styles for every girl’s needs, with difficult to find sizes, wide fitting shoes, flats, wedges, low heels and a unique couture collection made of the finest silks and swarovski crystals. What makes Deseo so special is that they offer a unique and professional couture shoe dye service so they can match or coordinate the colour of your shoes. You will be the envy of the night! 10 | www.highschoolformals.com.au

So how can you achieve this amazing skin you know you want? Easy, we have all the tips and tricks to have you glowing from the inside out in no time. On the surface: Celebs and models love a good

moisturiser and so should you. If you have drier skin use a thick cream especially at night to plump up your skin. If you have combination skin use a hydrating moisturiser that is especially formulated for your type. If you have oily skin use a hydrating gel that nourishes skin without leaving any surface moisture. No matter what your skin type, always use a moisturiser with sunscreen during the day. Living under Australia’s harsh sun we need it dfinetely and most good beauty companies will have a range with SPF15+.

Work it from the Inside Out: Keeping a healthy diet can do absolute wonders for your complexion. Keeping hydrated by drinking water also keeps skin clear and eyes bright and sparkling. Models like Miranda Kerr swear by drinking water for a clean complexion. Making sure you get enough sleep every night also helps to say buh-bye to bags and dull looking skin. One very important piece of advice for keeping gorgeous looking skin is to always take your makeup off before hitting the pillow. Sleeping with makeup on clogs your pores and creates dull, weathered looking skin. formals yearbook 2012

“ The average Aussie girl attends two or more formals and most are forking out the cash each time they need another gown to wear.” Being able to do a dress swap with a friend or alter an old formal dress is a much more cost effective way to survive the expensive formal season. For your own formal you will, of course, want to have your very own perfect dress, but if you have been invited to another formal as a date it’s a cool idea to reuse a dress and mix it up with some killer heels and hot accessories. If you don’t spend a fortune on a new gown for each formal you might be able to splash out on some ah-mah-zing designer heels! If you are keen on getting a dress that you can wear again but you’re not sure how you’ll be able to get away with * gasp * wearing the same thing twice (!) here are some hints on how you can do JUST THAT:

“ Come formal night, you will be gorgeous, totally glam and ready for the night of your life. But first, you need to find the perfect dress, and here are some handy tips.” 18 | www.highschoolformals.com.au

Make a lookbook before you shop. Having a look through the fashion pages on HighSchoolFormals.com is a great way to find the dress of your dreams. Print out pics of the dresses your loving for a shortlist. It’s the fastest and easiest way to figure out what kind of style you’re looking for.

Work out your colour palette. Have a look at photos of yourself and see which colors best compliment your complexion and colouring – like all of us, some colours will look great and some won’t. It’s just a matter of finding

formals yearbook 2012

the ones that leave you glowing and radiant. Can you see yourself in any super-flattering styles? There is some help out there if you are feeling left clueless though, you can download iFrockUp to your iPhone for free and you can get your bestie’s opinion on what looks hot or not.

Flaunt It. Everybody has body parts they don’t love. Thankfully there are fashion tricks out there that can help you cover up your negatives and flaunt your positives. If you’ve got great arms, opt for a strapless to show them off. Got killer stems? Go with a nice split or layered lengths to show of your pins. Absolutely everyone has something about their body to be proud of. If you’ve got a booty Beyonce would be jealous of, then don’t be afraid to show of those dangerous curves too!

Knowing your body shape and how to dress it is important for any fashion forward lady. School Formal is a time to get the most flattering fit and shaped dress for your body type. Not sure what type you’d fall under? Answer this simple question for an indication: Where do you carry the most weight? Stomach and Bust: Apple Shaped. Hips and Thighs: Pear Shaped. Bust and Hips but not waist: Hourglass Shaped. Naturally Balanced: Slim/ Athletic Shaped. Remember, these body shape guides are just basic outlines of common types and everyone is unique. You could be a mixture of two different shapes so take what you feel applies to your own shape

Apple: Characteristics of this body shape are

fuller busts with a little more width through the centre of your body and slim legs. Think of Kate Winslet’s body shape. For apple girls the trick is to create more feminine shapes with clothing and accentuate those killer stems (lucky girls!) Draw attention to slim arms, legs and décolletage and create a waist in your dress. An empire line dress that glides over your waist is a trick that celebs like Drew Barrymore use. Opt for bold prints rather than blocks of darker colour and keep the details at your arms and neck. Anything to make you appear smaller in the middle is important to creating a more balanced figure.

formals yearbook 2012

You can get away with shorter hems and sleeker styles that show off your gorgeous pins. A cute ¾ length sleeve also flatters arms and will balance your look and wrap around dresses are perfect for your shape.

Pear: Pear shaped girls (like Beyonce) classically

have an awesome upper body and have naturally toned arms and back with a smaller bust. Pear girls also have wider hips and thighs compared to their upper body thus the reference of having a “pear” shape. This body shape needs some balance because it is fuller through the bottom, thighs and legs and not as broad through the top. Creating Balance is easier than it sounds. V-necks or wide necklines will broaden your top half and give the illusion of a more even body shape. Flatter your top half with embellishments and strapless or strappy tops. Go for bright colours and silks – anything that will draw the eye up. Make the most of your tiny waist and emphasise it with dresses that cinch in at this area. Stick with darker colours for your bottom half and avoid very thigh hugging styles. You want to elongate the leg to make it longer A dark flowing fabric will glide over any problem areas and won’t take attention away from the details you have up top.

Hourglass: This shape has the classic curves every girl wants -Marilyn Monroe’s killer figure. Characteristics of this shape are a fuller bust and hips both of similar proportion and thin waist in-between. The trick for this body shape is accentuating the areas of your body that you love and minimising any areas you aren’t as confident with. Wrap around dresses are perfect for hourglass girls as they show off that naturally thin waist. Any tailored dresses with belting or cinching through the waist are the styles that will flatter you best. Look for semi firm fabrics that are still lightweight –you want to be wearing a dress that supports you without adding any bulk. Be careful of high necklines, a V cut neckline will flatter your bust best because it makes your wider chest appear narrower. Hourglass girls –feel free to play up the femininity of your body shape with flirty dresses and girly styles, your shape was made for it. www.highschoolformals.com.au | 19

Column: Slim or Athletic body shapes are sporty types with minimal curves like Cameron Diaz. This body type is straight and narrow, which means slim girls can handle runway trends and many different styles. The trick with an athletic or column shapeds body type is creating curves and a more feminine silhouette. “Mix and Matched prints and textures add curves to the right place. This will break up the body so athletic shapes don’t look so boyish. Pleats, Ruching, Detailing, Beading and Silks all help to make a slimmer shape more womanly. Tailored dresses that come in through the waist look great on athletic bodies as well because they will create the shape you want for your body. Bias cut dresses will hug your body and show off your athletic frame. Any dresses with volume through the skirt will help girls self conscious of skinny legs but if you’re ready to embrace you frame you can go for slinky dresses that hug your hips and fall straight to the floor.”

But how do you know which body type you are? By answering this simple question you should be able to find out:

ARRIVING IN

STYLE Everyone wants to have that Cinderella moment at the formal when you enter the room and everyone turns to see amazing you look. So how do you make sure you have the grand entrance you’ve always dreamed of? We have a few pointers to make that moment special:

1. Pick a car that suits the kind of entrance that you want. Some might want to look like a sophisticated celeb and slink out of the sleek stretch limo. Others might want to get a huge pink hummer to rock out with their BFFs and start the party. Some are happiest rocking up in an old classic with their date clad in bowler hat and suspenders. Whatever you want it to look like, imagine it and then get busy making it happenand remember to book ASAP! You can have the perfect arrival; just make sure it suits your own style! 2. Get the cameras out straight away. You don’t want to miss a minute of this perfect moment so get the happy snaps happening. Take photos with your besties on the way and as they are arriving. Take pics of you and your mates at the venue. You’ll all have big smiles and plenty of hugs to give so capture all the fun and excitement. 3. Make sure you have heels you can walk in! Some ladies know how to rock the platforms and stilettos but for those who

don’t, stick to a smaller heel and save embarrassment or injury. Clambering out of a Cadillac is a hard task in a beautiful gown anyway, so stumbling around in heels that are too high could potentially ruin your coo,l calm and collected composure. If you absolutely must have those nine inchers, make sure you practice wearing them before the formal as much as possible. You’ll want to wear them in a bit and get super stable so practice, practice, practice! If you have a maxi or floor length dress, don’t hesitate to wear sparkly flat sandals or ballet flats.

4. While you’re worrying about the perfect car, capturing all the moments and attempting to walk in those gorgey pumps, the one thing you absolutely must think about is having fun! That is the most important part about formal night. Once you’re there its time to celebrate with your classmates – so have a blast!

Choosing the right

EYE COLOUR

MAKEUP ur o y e k a M pop! eyes

“Here are some easy colour techniques that will compliment your peepers.”

Search for Makeup Artists and Suppliers

Hazel eyes will easily adapt to many different colours, so be bold!

Brown Eyed Girls are lucky with lots of choice! You can’t go wrong!

Highlight the hue of your eyes with some bright greens or an electric blue or for something more subtle you can’t go wrong with a swirl of dusty rose or a rich pink on your lids.

Be daring with colour and go with bright and rich plums /blues/browns /violets. Metallics like Gold and Silver are also winners for brown eyes. Experiment with what works best for you.

Keep it simple with blue eyes. Coppers and browns will show off your natural colour and offset the blue for more of an intense look without being too overdone. Any warm earthy tones like brown/grey/camel/ taupe will work perfectly. Or for a classic look opt for blacks and charcoals to frame your eyes 22 | www.highschoolformals.com.au

Classic looks are best for emerald eyes. Stick with some natural browns/deep purples/ plums or lilacs. If you do want some more exciting colour go with a dark green. Taupe and Gold can also be used for highlighting green eyes but keep it light!

silky concealer instead of a heavy or thick consistency. Apply thin layers of a sheer coverage type of concealer and build up the colour with plenty of blending. Always make sure you get a concealer one shade lighter than your foundation, this gives it a more natural and awake look.

going

5 tips to ensure you:

SOLO have a blast

1 Don’t get hung up if your besties all have dates. This doesn’t mean that you’re going to be left out at all. It just means there’s going to be a bigger group of people to have fun with.

2 Make sure you have a foolproof plan. Work out how you’re getting to the pre

party, the formal and the after party (if you’re allowed one!). Sometimes when things don’t go according to plan it is easy to dwell on the bad things. So make sure everyone is clear on the plan so you can stick to it and have an awesome night.

3 Let loose! Get your dancing shoes on, have a boogie on the d-floor and make the night all about you. It’s your night to shine.

4 Talk to anybody and everybody. Do the rounds at the tables after dinner and chat to your teachers. Without a date to entertain you can be the ultimate social butterfly.

5 Enjoy the Kodak moments all night long. Take photos with all your friends. In

big groups or just with your besties, getting in front of the lens is a must on formal night.

HAIR H O W T O:

THE MESSY BUN

“If you’re doing your own hair (or your BFF’s!) for the formal then trying to recreate the red carpet looks with your own locks can seem a bit overwhelming.”

Here’s a simple step-by-step guide for creating one of my fave hair looks this season:

the new messy bun!

One of the easiest hairstyles to master is this messy up do that has been seen on all the runways and red carpets this season. It takes minutes to create and there are so many variables of this look that you can change it up easily to wear the look to more than one event! For this look simply wash hair the day before you style it (your hair needs a bit more “grit” to stay looking fab all night). Spray some volume boosting spray into your roots and pull hair back into a loose ponytail just above the nape of the neck at the back of the head. If you have shorter layers at the front pull these parts out and style around the face how you like. If your hair is all one length, keep it all in the ponytail but mess up the hair so it isn’t slick. The easiest way to do this is to use the palm of your hand to rub your head all over and create some angel like flyaways that all the it-girls and models have been rocking recently.

formals yearbook 2012

If you’re rockin’ a shorter mop, pull large pieces out of the ponytail and pin them back to the head in a twisting motion, making sure you cover the hair tie up with hair and spray with a light mist of hairspray to keep in place. If you have longer locks, twist the ¾ of the ponytail into a bun and secure with a hair tie and use that last ¼ piece of the ponytail to wrap around the hair tie so the bun looks neat and profesh. Spray with a light most of hairspray and you’re done! Lastly rough up hair and create some texture through the bun to master the messy look. If you’re loving this style and want to take it to the next level, tease the ponytail before you create the bun and hold it with hairspray. You can also move the bun higher to the middle of your head and tease the crown of your head into a beehive style for a totally on-trend 50’s look. So many different variations to try!

TANNING Do’s & Don’ts Search for Spray Tan Salons

“Getting a spray tan for your formal is a great way to look and feel fabulous on the night. It is the best option if you want a bit of healthy colour but don’t want to run the risks of skin cancer from real tanning or solariums. We all know that a bad tan can turn your big night into a big disaster so here’s some tips to make sure you have a gorgeous, even tan (not a patchy, orange tan!).”

Pre Tanning

Post Tanning

Make sure you always book your spray tan for two days before you want to show it off. This way, your tan will have time to settle and you can make sure it has faded to a natural colour. Always book a professional for your spray tan. There is too much that could go wrong to trust an amateur!

Once you have gotten your tan and you have waited a little while to let it dry only wear very loose fitting clothing. Making sure you don’t sit down or sweat or go near liquid might seem crazy but you it pays off when you are sporting a completely streak free bronze hue!

Make sure you have buffed your skin to perfection. One of the golden rules of tanning is proper exfoliation. It is essential to do it pre tanning to prepare your skin. Don’t shave straight before your tanning appointment. Try to do this 24 hours beforehand.

Don’t panic when you see yourself turning darker than what you thought you’d asked for. While you’re waiting for your tan to set and before you wash off the excess colour you can seem more chocolate than caramel. This is totally normal and once you’ve showered (gently wash your body with a loofah in lukewarm water, no scrubbing please!) and dried yourself (patting down with a towel only, no wiping and definitely no scrubbing!) you’ll have the shade you wanted.

While it may be tempting, don’t moisturise! This will create a layer between your skin and the tan so the colour won’t hold. However it is a good idea to rub a little moisturiser on the areas you don’t want your tan to settle like elbows, knees, palms and ankles. These areas tend to absorb more colour than anywhere else so protect them with a dab of moisturiser. “ I f you follow these rules for a perfect tan you can go to the formal knowing your glow is flawless and feeling bronzed and lush.”

formals yearbook 2012

If you do get a blotchy patch of a streak, you can fix this. Using a dark coloured towel, rub any streaky areas to blend after your shower. Use a protective moisturiser to seal in your tan once you have showered and waited for it to settle.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR

FORMAL GARMENTS Once you have found your perfect formal dress, the last thing you want to do is get it ruined. If you have invested in an expensive gorgeous gown you’ll want to keep it forever. We have some tips to make looking after your formal garments a whole lot easier.

If the dress has any intricate detailing or beading, it can be harder to care for. While a dress with this kind of feature will look amazing, you will have to be mindful that it may need repairs and extra care.

“ Do it like the celebs and get your dress altered to fit your body shape perfectly. This handy tip will mean that you’ll feel comfortable in your gown all night long and look amazing!” It’s not only for the girls who had their dress made to measure, small alterations to straps and seams can make a big difference. There are some stains that need immediate treatment. For instance: Coke, fake tan, mud, lipstick, foundation, makeup, deoderant, perspiration or shoe polish. And remember, no liquid can come in contact with silk, not even water! Some dry cleaners can also clean handbags and shoes. Keep your dress in a garment bag whenever you aren’t wearing it. Dressmakers and Dress Shops should give you one when you purchase the dress so the dress doesn’t get ruined. Garment bags protect the fabric of the dress so it doesn’t crush or get caught on anything else and so the hem doesn’t get damaged.
