Introduction A+ fundraising for high school After years of organising play dates and squeezing in time to be a part of your child’s school life, high school arrives. You no longer seem wanted in the school grounds. There’s no after school care – just a myriad of after school activities and homework; and your teen definitely does not want you involved in the social life. That is sooo uncool! It’s enough to make you want to sit back and think “Well I have done my bit”. FACT: Research shows that the best performing students in high school are those whose parents remain involved in their education, irrespective of socioeconomic status, ethnic/racial background or parents’ own education.1 FACT: Entering high school is actually the most challenging time in a student’s life. Despite what the kids say, involved parents ease the transition.2 Well-known child psychologist Dr John Irvine says: • Don’t go it alone. Parents need to meet other parents at the high school so they have a reference group to check things with. (Okay – to me that says ‘get involved with the P&C’) • Take an active interest in your teen’s school work and activities. Attend school events; get to know teachers. Wait until I tell my kids that fundraising and volunteering at school will be a part of my parental charter until they graduate! Are you up for the challenge? This guide shares ways to identify the right fundraiser for your high school audience, overcome volunteer burnout (common among parents of high schoolers) and how to introduce fundraising to a new generation.
Happy fundraising!

Parent-driven Fundraising
Fundraising in the secondary school market is a hard nut to crack unless:
Key issues:
(a) it’s cause-related or (b) students (and to a lesser extent, parents) see that there’s something in it for them directly or (c) it’s social. Within high schools, there are often three distinct volunteer fundraising streams: 1. The parents’ group (P&C/P&F) 2. Students running a business venture as an assignment 3. Students raising money for a cause. These groups have different target audiences. Different products will work for them too. But the fundamentals apply to all three. • Have a goal – a SMART goal • Don’t keep the goal to yourself – let it be known. You’re much more likely to get support. • Consider your market – think demographics, affordability, appeal, timing and values. • Product drives – like life – have a beginning, middle and an end. You cannot afford to skip any stage. • When the fundraising activity is over: - report the outcome back to your community - complete a Fundraising report card to help those who follow you learn from you.

1. How to engage a community populated by ‘phantoms’ 2. Volunteer burnout – how to reignite the fire to get involved 3. Choosing the right fundraiser
1
How to engage a community when it’s populated by ‘phantoms’ Many parents are ‘phantoms’ when their children get to high school; only seen for teacher interviews and graduation! Add to that teens’ own desire to keep parents in the dark about what’s going on. Seven-year-old Johnny may be been proud as punch handing you a note but 17-yearold Jonno is more likely to throw the note away, along with the uneaten healthy packed lunch. High school students love social networking. Beat them at their own game. Use technology and social networking to get your fundraising messages out! • Use your school’s website. Establish – if you don’t already have one – a Parents Group page and regularly post news of meetings, activities, and goals. • Use group email to contact parents, sending invitations direct to them (no getting lost at the bottom of the school bag) fundraisingideas.com.au

Dealing with volunteer burnout
• Break down tasks into manageable chunks. Think micro-tasks. Offering one hour – and knowing it will be time well spent – is manageable.
overcome privacy issues the school had sharing that information – and we have a handle on what people want and have got that’s of use to us as a group. P&F executive member, Brisbane

Proven fundraising options
• Do not assume that someone who has convened an event will naturally do it again the following year. Be courteous: ask.
As Dr John Irvine says parents need other parents when their kids are in high school. That’s why social activities are good choices. They don’t have to be outrageously expensive black-tie dinners.
• Actively recruit from the incoming classes. If possible, groom a volunteer so they are ready to run the fundraiser the following year.
Depending on the school community, you may want to go for a family event such as trivia nights or adults-only events like casino nights or comedy sit-down dinners.
• Use social networking to spread the word that you’re in need of help. Hitting a response button can be so much easier than picking up a phone (particularly at 11pm!) • Incorporate a social/fun element into volunteering. Parents of high school students do appreciate meeting new people. • Thank people for giving their time. No matter how little, time is precious and deserves recognition. Since inserting an info sheet about our P&F into the orientation pack, we’ve enjoyed an 80% return rate, building our database of incoming parents interested in getting involved in the high school. We ask what they’re interested in and what skills they have to share. By providing us with their email and phone number, we fundraisingideas.com.au
Our trivia night attracted 300 participants of all ages: tables of students; tables of parents; family tables. Entry was set at just $15 for adults and $10 for students, making it affordable. Refreshments (which were donated), raffles and a smattering of fun ‘opt-in and pay’ games added to our profit margin.
High school P&C, Brisbane
Shopping tours can be popular mum-anddaughter affairs. Custom-labelled wine is another proven success although its marketing needs to be carefully approached. Movie discount vouchers appeal, particularly if timed towards the end of the year when there’s a long summer of movies for all the family.

TIP: Check out what movie venues are ‘in’. If the one offering the discount is not the favoured place to hangout, no amount of savings will encourage a teenager to support the fundraiser.
Student– driven Fundraising
Win support from the ‘in’ crowd of students and the wanna-be’s will follow.
Teens are passionate – and not just about the latest crush!
My free product-specific e-books on shopping tours, custom-labelled beverages and entertainment spell out how to these fundraising options really work for you. TIP: Get the student leadership group onside. If the P&C is raising money for something that will benefit students – like a pool refurb or a refitting of the school canteen – emphasise the ‘greater good’: the ‘what’s in it for them’.
If their water polo team or footy team or drama club or music ensemble really needs something, they’ll get behind it. There’s something in it for them! If disaster strikes and a charity puts out a call for support, teens respond. They see a way to make a difference. Introducing them to fundraising to achieve goals provides real life skills: • community service • time management

In high school, teens often turn to product options (see the range of the Fundraising Directory) for one of two key reasons: 1. business studies venture 2. cause-related fundraising In either case, short product drives, are often the best fundraisers. Direct sales – like chocolates – mean buying a quantity of stock upfront (sometimes with delayed payment options) and selling it. Anticipated turnover is high; price low. These are impulse buys. Programs requiring orders to be taken and distributed require more time and organisation but there’s no upfront cost and no risk.
Teenagers are the hardest to engage but they melt when cookie dough is offered! Billy G, Australian Fundraising Whatever the cause, these teens have focus. That focus still needs to be turned into a tangible SMART goal. Short-burst direct sales product drives work well for these teens with a purpose. Food – particularly sweets and chocolates – is a winning choice; but not the only one to think about. Custom-labelled water works well for sporting teams. It can be sold throughout a sport season at training and games – and off-season too.
TIP: Incentivise! Offer lunchtime pizza for the best class response
Plants or enviro-friendly products, for example, reinforce an environment group’s purpose.
Business studies venture
A walk-a-thon may suit a sports group – or be used to highlight a social justice issue.
A product drive is ideal for a business studies venture that needs to be up and running quickly with a result within a term.
Piggyback fundraising off an event – like a school dance – and sell fun glow products. You can make up to 300% profit selling them! How? Check out my e-book on glow products as fundraisers!
Food is a sure-thing.
Cause-related fundraising Cause-related fundraising at high school may include: • sports teams • music ensembles

someone affected – and we held a book drive for another, small public, school that had been burnt down. I worked with the library captains in every class and involved the students in selecting books. As a follow-up, I put a notice in the newsletter thanking “everyone” without naming names and created personalised thank-you cards that were attached to every order. In this way, everyone’s support was acknowledged without breaching anyone’s privacy. Marissa, fundraising coordinator, Ivanhoe, Victoria
When the fundraiser’s over The money’s banked, and it’s all over, right? Not quite. There are four final key tasks:
1
Share the outcome with your community.
Too often, a fundraiser just fades away. People want to know what happened! Communicate the result with all who took part – committee members, volunteers, and supporters – using your newsletter, website, noticeboard: “Thanks to your support at the <name>fundraiser, we can …>
fundraisingideas.com.au
2
Provide your fundraising supplier with feedback.
Leave a review for them on their Fundraising Directory page!
3
Congratulate your volunteers on a job well done. They’ll be more receptive to helping again. Handwritten notes from the group president are a nice touch: a blanket group email is not as motivating.
4
Complete the Report Card in your Fundraiser’s Handover Manual. This provides a record of what worked, what didn’t; and why. It includes timelines, quantities, costs, profit, and volunteer and supplier details. It’s an essential tool to help measure success and plan a bigger and better fundraiser next time. You can use the ‘Fundraising Report Card’ on the Fundraising Directory – a simple template to help you record the nuts and bolts of what you did and what you would have done differently. Handover such as this is absolutely vital to the future success of your school’s fundraising. Best of luck!
