Introduction Fundraising Solo: in pursuit of a dream You want to take a gap year and volunteer in a Mexican orphanage…There’s a special sports program interstate that you really want to attend – if only you could afford to get there…You’ve dreamt of being a singer – and the auditions are coming up for a national TV talent show 1000km away. Maybe you want to support a social justice cause that does not have its own fundraising campaign in place. Raising money for one-off needs can be tough. For starters, philanthropists (people who give) tend to have special ‘causes’ that they support and yours is unlikely to be on their radar. There will also be those who say: “if you want to do it, pay for it yourself”. But if you’re truly passionate about your dream… if you really believe this will make a difference…that this is ‘it’…why not pull out all stops to achieve the dream. You’ll never know if you don’t have a go! The Fundraising Directory is here to help you realise your dream. Read up on ways to position your fundraising efforts for the greater good – and maximise your profit.
Go on: chase the dream!

Why you’re doing what you’re doing
How to win community support
Think also about why you really want to do this. Who benefits other than you? Is it clearly cause-related or are you the main beneficiary?
Whether you are funding your travel to do volunteer work in a Third World country or raising money for a local cause, you need to attract supporters.
How much money do you need to raise? ‘A lot’ is not an answer. Neither is ‘anything’.
Australians are generous givers – but they don’t (generally) give without good reason.
Step 1: Set a SMART goal.
TIP
• Specific – well-defined and clear • Measurable – in terms of progress towards the goal • Agreed – all key stakeholders agree to the goal and have a stake in it • Realistic – don’t be too ambitious • Timely – a time frame is built in.
Your funding options Depending on your cause or dream, these options may be available: • a government grant (check out national, state and your local council) • support from giving Foundations • corporate sponsorship • support from community organisations like Zonta, Lions, Rotary. Even with this support, chances are you will need to fundraise too (BTW parents to pay is not fundraising). That’s where the Fundraising Directory comes in. It’s loaded with options for product drives and theme nights. This eBook teases out some of the specific issues you need to think about.
10
ebook - Fundraising for Individuals
Be careful how you frame what you’re doing. Adopt a line and stick with it. Be able to show that: • This is not a luxury. • This is not indulgent. Others will benefit from your involvement. Good communication throughout the fundraising — and afterwards — is essential.
Step 2: Plan a fundraising calendar With a firm goal and a timeframe in which to attain it, you can plan a fundraising calendar. Think about: • What’s happening in your locality? Can you piggyback a fundraising effort off another? • Who are your supporters? What appeals to them? Parents and best friends may support you unconditionally – but ask yourself fundraisingideas.com.au
why others would. What’s in it for them? Your choice of fundraising activities needs to provide some small benefit to others. • How much time can you really devote to the fundraising? Is it really worth it? A mix of activities provides scope for more people to support your efforts in some way. For example, your calendar may look like this: • direct product sales drive • a physical activity – like a walk-a-thon • a community builder (a fun event such as a trivia night) • a fundraiser piggybacking on a popular calendar event.
Step 3: Deciding on the fundraiser that best suits you Product drives are short and snappy; like an election campaign. Two to three weeks is ideal. Events — like a-thons, trivia nights, comedy dinners or casino nights — need lead-time to organise. No matter how you fundraise, remember your market: • Is the product/event affordable? • Does it have broad appeal? • Are values compromised? For example, you wouldn’t choose a wine drive if raising money for a group that supports people with alcohol dependence.

When time is short, direct sales programs are best. You order a product and sell it immediately. • Examples of direct sales program products are chocolates and lollies, custom-labelled water, silicone wristbands and glow products. They are often lower cost, high volume products; frequently a spur-of-themoment buy. • On the plus side, you have product to sell now. • On the minus side, you may need to outlay money first for the product – and if you order too much, the unsold stock is lost profit. (Lessons from this: underestimate what you can sell; you can always order more! Know the supplier’s return policy.) With more time up your sleeve, fundraising options broaden. An order-driven sales campaign needs about four to six weeks from kick-off to delivery. Catalogues and order forms are distributed, orders are made, tallied and placed, and goods delivered. • Examples of order-driven sales campaigns include books, bulbs, baked goods (like pies and lamingtons), cookie dough, homewares and movie tickets.
TIP If money’s tight in your community, choose a product that many people would buy anyway – and change where they spend it. Food is a good example. Discounted movie tickets at a local cinema can be a real blessing ahead of school holidays. Get active. Think a-thons: walk-a-thons, skip-a-thons, swim-a-thons. This is a natural if you’re sporty. Use a walk-a-thon to demonstrate a humanitarian cause. For example, how far it is to walk to a clean water supply or how much time a child spends walking everyday to get an education. Most major cities now have large fun run events where you can fundraise for your own cause. Check out www.everydayhero.com. au. Bring community together, combining fundraising with a social activity such as a trivia night: great fun for all ages.
Step 4: Choosing the right supplier Look through The Fundraising Directory, view the websites of potential suppliers, and create a short list. Using the ‘Information Request’ system built into The Fundraising Directory website makes this task easy. Now it’s time to ask questions. Remember, a good fundraising supplier will not only answer your questions but will want to know more about you too

Questions you need to ask 1. How long has the company been in business? 2. How experienced is the company representative in fundraising? (You want all the support experience brings.) 3. Is the product high-quality? Quality products equal quality revenue returns. 4. Are products paid for in advance or upon delivery? 5. What is the returns policy if you overorder? 6. How do you make money? 7. Does the supplier provide helpful services (such as promotional posters, tally sheets, collection orders – anything that makes your job easier)?
• any historical information (e.g. past fundraisers, participation levels, successes and failures).
Step 5: Spread the word You want as many people as possible to know that you’re fundraising for a cause and what that means. • Establish and maintain a blog or Facebook page specifically for your cause. - Include information about what you want to achieve and why - Emphasise the benefits to others - Don’t be afraid of using emotive imagery - Provide information about upcoming fundraising events or activities
Ask for a reference or two – and check performance out before committing.
- Include a running tally of how close you are to goal — and to your deadline
Remember
- Thank supporters — particularly businesses
PROFIT = total sales – total costs
Questions you should be asked The questions shouldn’t be one-way either. Fundraising companies you want to work with will ask questions about: • your fundraising goal • your fundraising timeline • the number of potential participants and their ages (people helping you raise money) fundraisingideas.com.au
-
Keep blogging when you set off on the ‘dream’. Provide details and pictures to confirm that supporters’ faith in you was well- placed.
• Email all your friends, work mates, and family. Invite them to become ‘fans’ of your Facebook page or subscribe to updates. You are creating a database of supporters. • Local weekly newspapers may be interested in what you’re doing. You will need a ‘hook’ – something that Fundraising for Individuals e-book
17
makes you stand out from others who may also be taking part in similar causes. That ‘hook’ may be a gimmick linked to your fundraising efforts; it may relate to your destination (are you the first from your area to ever do this or go to this place?). Once you have established a ‘name’ for yourself with a journalist, keep that contact alive by providing updates on progress. Talk to your local radio station too. • Ask local businesses, the library, and your council member to display a poster promoting your fundraising. • Contact your local community group (such as Rotary, Lions, Zonta, Sorpotomist or Country Women’s Association) and offer to be a speaker, talking about your cause and what you hope to achieve.
Step 6: Kick off your fundraising effort – and drive it home Successful fundraising drives have a beginning, a middle and an end.
Step 7: Share the outcome with your community Too often, a fundraiser just fades away. Share the result with all who took part. Use your Facebook or blog to post updates If a local journalist has shown interest, follow it up. And when you are off pursuing that dream, don’t forget your supporters: let them live the dream with you through your updates. BEST OF LUCK!!!
Advertise YOUR Business HERE!
• Launch your fundraising drive with some publicity such as local newspaper. • Maintain the momentum over the next couple of weeks with posters, reminder announcements and a midway progress report via your web presence. • Drive it home in the last few days.

Proven fundraising successes The Fundraising Directory links you to businesses with proven track records. What works for you depends on how much you need to raise (step 1), who your market is and how you want to raise the money (steps 2 and 3). Here’s a quick run-down of the category options: • Artwork, stationery and labels includes groovy temporary tattoos and handmade greeting cards • A-thons turn healthy action into sponsored activity • Books and movies includes catalogueselling of quality products as well as discounted movie passes • Bulbs, plants and herbs provides seasonal colour
• Glow products are cheap to buy, provide good profit but require volume. Consider as an add-on moneyspinner for events such as a dance • Homewares are sold party-plan style or in product drives • Personal care products encourage supporters to change where they spend everyday items, rather than paying for something not in the budget • Photography offers commission on group sittings • Shopping tours provide opportunity for supporters to bag bargains, socialise and support your cause • Silicone bands can carry your cause message – but require volume sales • Toys sold through catalogues may be an end-of-year option with the right market.
• Chocolates and lollies are timehonoured favourites • Clothing and jewellery are sold partyplan or in product drives • Custom-labelled bottled water can promote your cause, but may need volume sales achieved from sporting events or a dance to see you on your way • Entertainment providers put on events like trivia nights, comedy shows and mock casino events. • Food - including cookie dough and baked goods – is another timehonoured favourite fundraisingideas.com.au
