Labels Every parent knows how easily things get lost! Labels are essential for at least 14 years of a child’s life (and probably longer; they’re just not as accepting of our attempts to stamp every item of property with their name!) As a fundraiser, labels can be money spinners from day care through the school years while your child is involved in group activities that go away – think camps or playing sport at multiple locations.

When to run your fundraiser? If you’ve read 22 lessons for A+ fundraising (click here if you want to see it now), you will have in place:

a SMART goal – a real target and purpose for fundraising

a fundraising calendar with a mix of opportunities throughout the year – without being too enthusiastic or greedy.

Transforming children’s artwork or photos into professionally printed calendars, greeting cards and diaries. No upfront costs. No minimum orders.

Q

What’s new at Crazy Camel for 2013? A New for 2013, Labels. The simple and exciting way for schools to raise funds. Lots of designs are available. Great for sticking on lunch boxes, stationary and shoes. Q What is involved? A We provide art paper for the children to create their individual artwork on. No one is too young: footprints or handprints look great! At primary school level the artwork shows off the children’s developing art techniques. Q What makes this a great fundraiser? A 1. Everyone gets to participate by creating their own art, whether or not there’s a purchase. 2. Supports creative development. 3. Children's art and photos are cherished - a unique and treasured special gift for family and friends. 10 Fundraising with ARTWORK, STATIONERY & LABELS

4. Crazy Camel provides everything that is needed - including postage charges and we're only a free-call away for full support. Q Explain the teaching resource that supports the fundraising experience. A Crazy Camel provides art-based teaching resource booklets, specifically developed for teachers by teachers, to maximise valuable classroom time. We provide ideas for diary/ calendar/ greeting curriculum. So while the children are having fun, they’re also learning. Q If we look at this as a pre-Christmas fundraiser, when do we need to get organised? A We suggest creating the artwork in the last weeks of Term 3 or the first weeks of Term 4. If we have the completed art by early November, we can deliver calendars well before the holidays begin.

Choosing the supplier who’s right for you The Fundraising Directory takes the legwork out of finding suitable suppliers. You can send online queries to suppliers seeking more information and then decide who best meets your needs. Here are the absolute essential questions to ask: 1. How long has the company been in business?

Crazy Camel provides an artwork form for kids to create their drawings in advance. Once the artwork is completed, order forms are supplied and orders collected. 6. Is the drive based on orders or pre-purchase? 7. Does the supplier provide services that will help save volunteers’ time such as checklists, promotional posters, tally sheets, collection envelopes, pre-sorting?

2. How many years of experience does the company representative have in fundraising? 8. Is there a prize incentive program? If so, who pays for 3. What is the percentage profit it? of sales? 4. How much can I expect to make? 5. Is the product high-quality? Quality products equal quality revenue returns. For example: Make Cents Fundraising will supply their stock on consignment, providing a low risk fundraiser.

9. Are products paid for in advance or upon delivery? Will they work with you on a fair payment option? 10. What is the returns policy if you over-order? The last thing you want are boxes of unsold calendars! When talking to the company rep, consider her communication style. You want to work with someone who listens to your needs. It could be that the ‘40%’ company offers useful ‘extras’ that could boost sales and save time e.g. kick-offs, incentives, timely delivery of merchandise, customised packaging for individual. Perhaps the quality is so superior that an increased sales volume will net your group more money.

But here are some specific marketing tips for selling these products:

1. Get the teachers or group leaders on board. In particular the art teacher is a great asset for organising the artwork to be used for the cards, plates, aprons, teatowels or calendars.

2. Play up sentimentality and nostalgia. Items carrying children’s artwork are unique pieces: keepsakes to treasure.

Don’t take the percentage of sales at face value. Fundraising with ARTWORK, STATIONERY & LABELS 13

Expressions specialise in customised designs printed onto high quality tea towels, aprons and bags. We use only the best materials.

Q

How long has Expressions been in the fundraising business? A We have been helping schools and organisations in every corner of Australia raise funds since 1999. Q Which groups get the most from their Expressions fundraising experience? A Our main client base is schools, child care centres and groups with lots of children. We also work with sporting clubs, churches, social groups and increasingly with clients wishing to use our products as promotional tools or to commemorate special events. Q When is a good time to run your fundraiser? A Our products are big sellers if you’re celebrating an event, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and especially for Christmas. Or try to take advantage of our Earlybird FREE Tea Towel Offer which runs annually from January to June.

Q

How many drawings can we include? A Up to 450 pictures will fit on one tea towel, aprons up to 300 and bags 150 on each side. Many groups choose to do more than one design, for example one for ‘Juniors’ and another for ‘Seniors’. Q Does it have to be drawings? A Not at all, our experienced designers will help you create something truly unique and memorable, or simply use your logo or contact details for a really easy fundraiser. Q Describe one great ‘success story’. A We believe Expressions is a great success story. We’re very proud of our commitment to service and quality and our loyal customers back it up. About 50% of our customers each year have worked with us before and some of our clients have done a tea towel for every year we have been in business.

Handmade greeting cards presented in a reusable box. Fat free and convenient, you receive 35% profit on all sales. No upfront outlay. Delivery Australia wide.

Q

How long have you been operating? A We are two mums who got together in February 2008 with a one-off trial to give it a go, and it was an immediate success so we knew we were onto something special. Q What is the concept behind your fundraising project? A The product is a variety of beautiful handmade embellished 3D greeting cards sold in boxes of 30. Not only are they attractive and useful, but cost effective too, with each card working out to be only 87 cents. They are ordered on consignment and organisations are able to return any unsold cards. Q What do your customers like best about doing fundraising with you? A Our customers appreciate the fact they are fun products and easy to sell.

There is nothing to organise and they can return the boxes that are unsold, so they won’t make a loss. Q What fundraising advice would you offer to someone starting out? A It is so important to have the cards to show people when you are selling them. It’s difficult to get an idea about the cards and how attractive they are without seeing one for yourself. Q Do you have any success stories? A We have plenty of stories that demonstrate the success of the products. A dance school recently sold over 400 boxes. Also a remote school of only 12 students, sell in excess of over 100 boxes a year. It doesn’t matter how big or small your group is, Make Cents Fundraising is suitable for all.
