One of the biggest decisions a committee has to make is what to do to raise those much needed extra funds for a group project. Sometimes it’s easy to do what’s been done before, in the name of tradition; or because it seems just too hard to do something different. From my experience, product drives make fundraising easy. But there are so many different products to choose from! The Fundraising Directory presents you with an A to Z guide of reliable and proven fundraising products and services in Australia. In this e-book, a companion to my 22 lessons for A+ fundraising, let’s look at the possibilities that come from both – books and cookbooks. This option – played right – can be an absolute best-seller! Read on to find out how. Direct Digital

What’s on offer Choosing a fundraising drive selling books, cookbooks, DVDs or similar form of entertainment taps into both creative and practical aspirations. Suppliers listed in the Fundraising Directory provide: •

books - for toddlers, primary schoolers, teens and adults

journals

custom cookbooks

personalised CDs, DVDs and books that capture those ‘magic’ moments

entertainment discounts

Who would this suit? Fundraising drives that relate to books and music are popular for all ages. Childcare centres and kindergartens do particularly well. •

Parents want to give their children educational advantages – and books and music do that.

Grandparents and aunts and uncles want to do the ‘right thing’ and buy quality ‘useful’ gifts.

But this can be a fundraiser for any group! Who doesn’t enjoy a good book, a night in with a DVD – or the bargains that can come from Entertainment Books?

When to run your fundraiser? If you’ve read 22 lessons for A+ fundraising, you will have in place: •

a SMART goal – a real target and purpose for fundraising

a fundraising calendar with a mix of opportunities throughout the year – without being too enthusiastic or greedy.

Few buy books or DVDs only once a year! But for big sales – and big profits -- plan your delivery to be just before the winter and summer holidays. Gifts that give twice: market an end-of-year fundraiser as helping the time-poor beat the Christmas shopping crowds while also helping a group that’s important to them.

Choosing the supplier who’s right for you The Fundraising Directory takes the legwork out of finding suitable suppliers. You can send online queries to suppliers seeking more information and then decide who best meets your needs. Here are the absolute essential questions to ask: 1. How long has the company been in business? 2.

How many years of experience does the company representative have in fundraising?

3. What is the percentage profit of sales?

posters, tally sheets, collection envelopes, pre-sorting?

8. Is there a prize incentive program? If so, who pays for it? 9.

Are products paid for in advance or upon delivery? Will they work with you on a fair payment option?

10. What is the returns policy if you over-order? The last thing you want are boxes of unsold calendars! Why should the kids have all the fun! Check out suppliers who cater for all age groups. You immediately broaden your potential market too.

4. How much can I expect to make?

When talking to the company rep, 5. Is the product high-quality? consider her communication style. Some suppliers offer products as an alternative to cash as your fundraising reward. If your goal is to raise money for new games, puzzles or books, look at this option closely. Could you get what your group needs using this offer? An alternative may be to take some of your ‘profit’ in the form of goods and use those books, games or CDs as a prize in a Santa stocking end of year raffle.

You’ll need to launch the fundraiser.

You’ll need to round up the orders.

Hints on all this – and more – are detailed in 22 lessons for A+ fundraising. But here are some specific marketing tips for selling these products: 1.

Catalogues won’t sell themselves. You need a campaign that gets potential buyers looking seriously at what’s offered – and placing an order.

Consider a party plan type get-together or a show-and-tell display of some of thebooks on offer.

2. Make sure the people you are seeking support from understand fully why their 8

Here are some of the jobs that the fundraising committee still needs to do:

1.

Share the outcome with your community.

Too often, a fundraiser just fades away. People want to know what happened! Communicate the result with all who took part – committee members, volunteers, and supporters – using your newsletter and/or website.

2.

Provide your fundraising supplier with feedback.

Then head to the supplier’s listing on the Fundraising Directory website to leave a review of this supplier to share with other fundraising volunteers.

3.

Congratulate your volunteers on a job well done.

They’ll be more receptive to helping again.

4.

Complete the Report Card in your Fundraiser’s Handover Manual. While it’s fresh in your mind, complete a Fundraising Report Card that is contained in your 2013 Fundraising Directory, ready to be passed on to the incoming organiser. The templates in the Directory are very easy to fill out, and mean that your fundraising can be improved upon from year to year.
