Introduction A+ fundraising for your sports club* Sporting clubs and small community groups are like extended families: there’s a bond that glues you together no matter what other differences you have. Fundraising is generally the most cost-effective way to make money for your club; and you have a ready-made market in fervent supporters: club members, their families and friends, and local fans of the sport. Holding a fundraising activity doesn’t just put much-needed dosh into club coffers: it provides a chance to promote your club at the community level, generating more support and participation. Read on to learn the game plan your team needs to score in fundraising.

Happy fundraising!

* When I say ‘sports club’, think broadly. Whether you’re a member of a footy club, cricket team, swim squad, dance studio, equestrian group, judo club, scouts - any and all clubs share these principles for fundraising success.

GOAL! Okay – I’m not talking about the ball passing between two posts to score your team points. I’m talking about why you need to raise money; and the answer is not ‘because we need it’!

• clothing and jewellery • custom-labelled beverages • entertainment • food and fruit • glowsticks and flashing novelties • homewares • novelties

Successful fundraising demands a SMART goal:

• personal care products

• Specific – well-defined and clear

• photography

• Measurable – in terms of progress towards the goal

• printing and promotional products • shopping tours

• Agreed – all key stakeholders agree to the goal and have a stake in it

• silicone bracelets

• Realistic – don’t be too ambitious

• toys and educational products

• Timely – a time frame is built in.

Not every one of these works for every group. Look at your group’s demographics, disposable income, interests and values.

Lesson 1 in my comprehensive ‘Essentials of Fundraising’ eBook takes you through this critical first step.

Choosing fundraising options that suit your club Browse the Fundraising Directory and you’ll see 17 distinct categories of products offered for fundraising either as product drives, party plans, events or spur-of-themoment spends: • artwork, stationery and labels • a-thons and raffles • books and movies

Think timing too. Some fundraisers need more lead-time than others to deliver product, and profit. How fast do you need to raise the money? Is it for a long-term goal (perhaps to help pay for a new clubhouse) or short-term (upgrade equipment, offset costs of specialist training etc)? In your favour, club membership automatically suggests a common interest in the sport – and the club. But consider also divided loyalties – particularly if this is kids’ sport and a family has a number of children all playing for different teams or participating in a number of extra-curricular activities!

Product drives The following product drives have proven track records for sporting club success: • chocolates and sweets – boxes of product are purchased upfront (sometimes a delayed invoice is offered), distributed among club members and sold in workplaces, to neighbours, family and friends. • custom-labelled water - a healthy and practical choice that can be sold throughout a season at games and from the clubhouse. • food – orders are taken (from family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues), money received, and products delivered and distributed. Order-based drives do need lead time and volunteers to help with distribution, but involve minimal risk. • homewares – whether making a décor statement or, when it’s sport for young kids, displaying artistic as well as sporting talent. Lorraine Lea Linen entered a sponsorship arrangement with Netball Australia in 2008. Since then, it’s helped many other sporting clubs raise money selling its tea towel sets. Clubs order a number of sets upfront and use these to generate more sales. These two-pack 100% cotton teal towels sell for $8. The club keeps $2. Unsold stock can be returned. • books – sell from catalogues, books for all ages go down well, or consider publishing your own cookbook! While thinking of publications, Entertainment fundraisingideas.com.au

Books are filled with valuable offers and discounts from local restaurants, hotels, and attractions. • Customised scratchies – relatively new to Australia (but part of the sporting club culture in New Zealand), presenting an innovative twist to the ‘scratch and win’ concept • Temporary tattoos and customised silicone bracelets leave no doubt where loyalties lie. They’re cheap – and will sell among players and spectators at games throughout the season. Is your goal building related? Align your funding efforts with a buy-a-brick campaign!

Fundraising events Sporting clubs promote healthy living – along with an equally healthy dose of competitive spirit. Consider running an a-thon. It doesn’t have to be the traditional walk-a-thon. Use your imagination – swimming, kicking goals, dribbling balls, dancing, walking dogs: here’s a chance for active participation and pledges from team supporters and beyond. Turn your fundraiser into a social event for the wider community: host a trivia night or a comedy sit-down dinner. Use the clubhouse as a venue to keep overheads down. How do you celebrate the end of the season? Does it quietly pass or do you hold an all-in family fun day? Planning an event like this is easy when you tap into the experience of fete greats who Fundraising for Sporting Clubs e-book

contributed to my free eBook How to Organise a Fete. Use the family fun day to celebrate great performances while marketing the club for the next season too. As the sun sets on another season, it’s time for the glow products to come out.

Common problems solved Help! How do we get our message out to all teams? We train and compete at different times on different days; sometimes even at different places?

2. Establish a web presence for your club. Commit to this website being regularly updated (not just the competition ladder!) 3. Use group emails to send out bulletins and fundraising flyers (don’t forget to use ‘blind copy!). 4. Set up a Facebook page for your group. An executive committee member has the authority to click on ‘Create a page for a celebrity, band or business’. Or you can create a ‘group’ and what’s referred to as an ‘unofficial fan page’. • Either way, upload your club logo, photos that show your club’s activities in a positive way; even a short video clip. • Use your database of group members to tell everyone that there’s a FB presence they need to check out.

Go online to get your message out! Sporting clubs have a real challenge that schools don’t. Unlike the set hours of school, team training and competition take place at different times on different days in different places. You and your enthusiastic volunteers could organise to be at every club training session, handing out flyers, and then hassling to collect orders. In fact, you may need to resort to this ‘in-your-face’ approach but it is time and volunteer intensive… A 21st century way of doing the same job is to go online! Here’s how: 1. On sign-up day make sure the paperwork captures current email addresses of parents (and teens – they’re old enough to do their bit!). This becomes the makings of your database. fundraisingideas.com.au

• Use ‘what on your mind?’ as a prompt to provide progress reports – whether it’s a countdown to an event, a reminder to get orders in (or pick them up!), or a call for volunteer help. Every time an update is made, ‘friends’ will get the advice as News Feed. 5.

Become a ‘fan’ of your club’s Facebook presence. Thanks to Facebook’s News Feed, friends constantly learn what pages others are ‘fanning’ (to use FB-speak). Curiosity prompts them to take a look – and voila!: if they like, they’ll become a fan too.

Our season’s practically over before it starts. How can we possibly fundraise?

Other funding sources

You’re in luck! Product drives are best run short and focused. There’s a kick-off (or launch), a couple of weeks to drive home the effort and wrap-up.

Don’t forget to check out the availability of grants to sporting clubs – offered by local, state or federal government departments as well as some household name Australian companies.

Choosing a direct sales product drive – where product is in club members’ hands ready for immediate sale – definitely overcomes this concern.

• The Federal Government set up the Australian Sports Foundation to help not-for-profit groups raise money for eligible sports projects.

Our families are stretched. What with uniforms and club membership, they don’t have money to burn.

Then there’s sponsorship. You’d be surprised how willing a local business will be to support a local sporting club but think first – how would this business relationship benefit them? What can you offer them in return? Do you have a highprofile patron or celebrity supporter that the sponsor would love to be seen with? Does their product ‘fit’ without your club membership?

Focus on selecting a product that may be part of club families’ normal spending and then change where the money is spent, that is, through the club. That way the club’s not asking members to bust their household budget. For example: • A family may go to a photographic studio for a Mother’s Day sitting. Instead, organise a photographer at the clubhouse and receive a commission. • Instead of shopping at the local bookstore, encourage families to order from a fundraising book catalogue. • Buying water? Don’t go for commercial brands: put your club’s name on customised labels and sell your own vintage H20.

22

ebook - Fundraising for Sporting Clubs

• Be grateful for in-kind support. A parent who is an electrician may offer services for free throughout the season: that’s an expense the club saves. Put a dollar value on it and reciprocate the recognition from this ‘sponsor’. Check out financial assistance that’s available for: • juniors under the Local Sporting Champions program – helping towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing at official National Sporting Organisation or National Sporting Organisation for people with a Disability- endorsed state or national sporting competitions fundraisingideas.com.au
