Jeremy Nails President Morgan County Economic Development Association
The Morgan County Economic Development Association (MCEDA) continues to work closely with our local, state and federal partners to focus on sustaining and preparing our economy for future growth. This takes time, planning and patience with a focused vision for our community. There are no defined roadmaps for a community to follow when planning for the economic future. Today’s volatile economic landscape and the emergence of stronger foreign national economies make creating new jobs and investment more complex than ever before.
As we continue to focus on supporting our existing businesses, we are also committed to diversifying our economy through the creation and recruitment of new business sectors to our community. MCEDA’s own strategic analysis and planning efforts, as well as the Chamber’s One Vision. One Voice. One Morgan County program, point out the need to prepare and build a total infrastructure complete with an educated workforce that is attractive to our existing companies and those targets that will ultimately diversify our economy. The Chamber’s Workforce Development Coalition, Decatur-Morgan County Entrepreneurial Center, Robotics Technology Park, the Athens State-Calhoun Downtown Fine Arts Center and the Morgan Center Business Park will play definitive roles in achieving this unified goal. Many positive initiatives are currently at work within our community that will ultimately benefit our citizens and prepare us for future growth. Each one of them adds a bit more to our economic vitality and our unique sense of place. Take time to support our community projects and keep focused on the long-term continued success of our region.
December 2010
Just as our community leaders developed the successful Mallard-Fox Creek Industrial Park and Port more than 25 years ago to create jobs and take advantage of our proximity to rail and the Tennessee River, we are focused on developing the new Morgan Center Business Park along the interstate 65 corridor located in the center of Morgan County. With its campus-like setting, easy highway access and proximity to reliable electricity and multiple broadband services, the park will be marketed to companies focused on the future. To help
attract additional interest from our targeted business sectors, the Morgan Center Business Park was recently named as having favorable attributes to attract a data center project by a recent Deloitte Consulting study, an economic development study sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

2010 State of the Schools Address
Decatur City Schools Superintendent, Sam Houston, and Jeannie Payne, listen as the Cedar Ridge Middle School’s 8th grade chorus sings the National Anthem.
Cedar Ridge Middle School chorus director, Beth Barnhart, adjusts Preston Holmes’ bowtie.
The Chamber has long hosted events during which the Mayor and County Commission Chairman give updates to our membership regarding the state of city and county government. In 2009, the Chamber began hosting a similar event to keep you informed about the condition of our local schools.
December 2010
Dr. Sam Houston, superintendent of Decatur City Schools, recently gave his 2010 State of the Schools address to a group of over 100 Chamber members and community leaders during a luncheon at Decatur Country Club. Houston outlined his goals for the upcoming year within Decatur City Schools, while also addressing challenges posed by proration. Positive highlights included DCS students’ gains in standardized test scores and awards, such as the Safe Schools award given by the Alabama Attorney General. A similar event for the Morgan County School system will be held in early 2011.

Danielle Denton is a Child of Children’s. Eight-year-old Danielle Denton of Sheffield loves dancing, playing with her friends and her older brother and going to school --- when her health permits. Four years ago, Danielle was diagnosed with cystic fibrois (CF), an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Fifty years ago, few children with CF lived to attend even elementary school, but today people with CF can expect to live into their 30s, 40s and beyond. With the help of her local pediatrician and her Children’s Hospital of Alabama doctors and caregivers, Danielle enjoys a near-normal life. “These are the things we love most about Children’s Hospitals,” says Danielle’s mom, Carol. “They are totally geared to kids and they enable her to live a normal life.”

The Art of Entrepreneurship: Fall 2010 Breakfast & Biz Making the Right Connections: Fall 2010 Business Matchmaker During the Fall Business Matchmaker, local businesses had the chance to pitch their products directly to purchasing agents from government agencies and prime contractors. “The fall Business Matchmaker was a huge success. We had participants from all over Alabama and southern Tennessee. As we do at all of our Matchmakers, we had small business owners and sales people tell us that they were able to do in less than one day what would normally take up to a year. This is such a great event because it truly makes business deals happen,” said Jim Page, Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development for the Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. If you missed this event and would like to participate in our 2011 Matchmaker, please contact Jim Page at Jim@dcc.org.

The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Business Center of North Alabama hosted a quarterly Breakfast & Biz in November at Sykes Place on Bank in downtown Decatur. Chris Gattis was the guest speaker and spoke about “The Art of Entrepreneurship.” There were approximately 30 people in attendance. Moving from great idea to a profitable business enterprise is a difficult proposition. Many hopeful business owners end up doing nothing more than creating a job for themselves or worse yet, failing altogether. The proper planning and understanding of the process and what to expect will help hopeful entrepreneurs plan for and achieve their brand of success. Gattis has helped hundreds of people become successful entrepreneurs. He knows how to hone a business model, analyze its viability, launch a business and keep it growing. Chris applies his real world knowledge with the skill that only comes from years of experience. In 1984, Chris started Blue Point Strategies to provide advisory services to companies and individuals dealing with business start-up, financial and operations management and site selection needs. Breakfast & Biz events are held each quarter and there’s no charge to attend. For more information about upcoming B&B events please check our website www.dcc.org or call (256) 353-5312.

Morgan Center Business Park in Hartselle, AL Identified for Data Center Potential Morgan Center Business Park in Hartselle, AL has favorable attributes to attract a data center project according to a recent Deloitte Consulting study, an economic development study sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

TVA and Chicago-based Deloitte Consulting assessed more than 50 sites across the TVA service area for their capacity to accommodate data centers -- specially designed facilities that house computer systems and components for Internet search engine companies, financial transaction processors, and other high-tech industries. Morgan Center was one of 12 sites named as a primary ready-fordevelopment site in the search. The locations were evaluated for accessibility, strong telecommunications infrastructure, electric power availability and reliability, and other characteristics beneficial to data center development. “Demand for data centers is growing as increased use of electronic commerce and information technologies requires more data storage space,” said John Bradley, senior vice president for TVA Economic Development. “There are exceptional opportunities for regional growth potential in this industry. This site has the resources, infrastructure, and other qualities needed to support strong data center development.” The 12 sites named are considered ready for development and meet necessary requirements and criteria to support a major data center project. TVA is partnering with Joe Wheeler EMC, regional, state and community economic development leaders to begin marketing these sites as part of its economic development region’s data center project recruitment initiative. “We are excited to be named a Certified Data Center Site,” stated Jeremy Nails, President of Morgan County Economic Development Association. “We are working hard every day to develop our infrastructure and diversify the companies and jobs we recruit to Morgan County. This designation will make our site more attractive to hightech companies and help distinguish us from other sites as we market the Morgan Center Business Park to prospects in the future.” Other prospective sites identified in the TVA survey are located in: Athens, TN.; Bristol, TN; Duffield, VA; Fayetteville, TN; Guntersville, AL; Jackson, TN; Lenoir City, TN; Maryville, TN; Murfreesboro, TN; Olive Branch, MS; and Tullahoma, TN.
December 2010
“Data centers provide highly-skilled, good-paying job opportunities,” Bradley said. “TVA’s goal is to help make the region more competitive in attracting and retaining these types of industries and the economic benefits associated with them.” Morgan County Economic Development Association (MCEDA), incorporated in April of 1969, was created to stimulate, promote and assist in the development of new industry and the expansion and development of existing industry located in Morgan County. For more information on MCEDA, visit www.mceda.org. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), a corporation owned by the U.S. government, provides electricity to large industries and 155 power distributors that serve approximately 9 million consumers in seven southeastern states. Economic development is a major part of TVA’s core mission. TVA’s Economic Development services are focused on attracting targeted new industries, retaining and growing existing businesses and helping communities be better prepared for economic growth.
