It’s Our City:
It’s Our City is the cross-party group leading the campaign to scrap the mayoral system on 5 May. You can find out more about the problems with the current system and the advantages of the committee system in the short video below. If you received a postal vote last week, be sure to return it as soon as possible: https://youtu.be/fjrAIDASFnc Join the panel to debate the issues. Thu, 28 Apr 2022, 17:30 at City Academy Bristol, Russell Town Avenue, Redfield. BS5 9JH

New booking system for tips:
From May you will need to book to visit the Bristol City Council recycling centres. The booking system is designed to create a better experience for residents by eliminating queuing time, easing congestion on roads around the recycling centres, and ensuring a smoother on-site experience.
The booking system will replace the odd and even number plate system It will apply to all of the recycling centres
Scrap the Mayor debate:
Bristol will go to the polls on Thursday 5 May to decide whether to keep our city mayoral system, or move to a committee-based system, where key decisions are made by multiple groups of councillors, rather than a single person. Eastside Community Trust, the Bristol Cable and Bristol Ideas are creating a space for people to come together, ask questions about how the referendum result will impact our lives in the city, and debate the wider issues at stake. There will be a way to book offline You will not need to book to visit the Avonmouth Reuse Shop
You can book with as little as an hour’s notice
We are concerned this new system will create extra bureaucracy, which may discourage some people from recycling. Let us know your experience of the new system.
Callington Road Nature Reserve update:
We attended the meeting of the Friends of Callington Road Nature Reserve at Knowle Community Centre last week. This year, the nature reserve will be celebrating its 20th anniversary so some special events are being organised, especially the Nature Day this June. More details to follow. A quick reminder from the Friends.
If you are walking your dogs in the reserve, please remember to keep your dogs on a lead in the upper slopes section of the reserve in order to protect the wildlife.
Brislington Meadows:
It is now pretty clear that the Mayor was dishonest with the Brislington electorate prior to the local elections last year when he said no homes would be built on the Meadows. He knew full well it was a promise he wouldn’t be able to keep, but it persuaded many people to vote for him, which of course was the intention. It’s now time to show the Mayor the door. On 5 May vote to end the broken promises and restore local democracy. Vote to scrap the Mayor!
Consultation on Western Harbour:
Bristol City Council is asking for your views on the draft vision for the Western Harbour, which includes the Cumberland Basin. The draft vision sets out a number of commitments that reflect the hopes of local people that were shared during public engagement in 2021. The council would like to hear your views on these commitments by completing a survey. You can take part at https://bristol.citizenspace.com/growth-regeneration/harbour-hopes/
This survey will close on 22 April 2022
Star Bereavement Training:
This is a reminder about the forthcoming STAR Bereavement Peer Support Training. This FREE evening course starts on Thursday 28th April 2022. Supported by ‘Connecting Communities’ (under the umbrella of Age UK Bristol) and based on the STAR model, this free training guides local residents and community workers through the process of setting up their own bereavement peer-support group in Bristol, North Somerset or South Gloucestershire.
These groups will be resident-led, self-sustaining, free of charge and open to anyone aged 18 or over. The free training course involves 4 workshops which will take place online via Zoom, followed by a Catch-up session. The course will be delivered starting 28th April 2022, and repeated in July and Oct 2022, and then in January 2023. Click on the following link for more information and to sign up to the training:
