Ahead of its three year anniversary in October, KASK on North Street in Bedminster has announced the launch of a restaurant to celebrate Bristol’s first class offering of street food. Inviting a different market trader into the KITCHEN every few weeks, guests can look forward to drinks menus paired with Malaysian, Mexican, Persian, Asian, South African, American and vegan cuisine - all before 2022 is out. Also the new home to The Mazi Project, a CIC challenging food poverty in Bristol, KITCHEN BY KASK will act as a community kitchen on weekdays. Launching the concept on the weekend of Friday 9 and Saturday 10 September will be Fat Rice – famed for its moreish Malaysian comfort food. With a menu never seen before at markets in the city, tables are already sold out for the evenings of both dates, so KITCHEN BY FAT RICE will also open for lunch on Saturday 10, with spots available to book at Expectkitchenbykask.co.uk.authenticMalaysian pork belly and braised shiitake mushrooms, all washed down with a wine flight, beers and a one-off cocktail designed to enhance the traditional spiced flavours of the cuisine. Fat Rice will be followed by KuKu, a Persian-inspired pop-up celebrating the mark left on food culture from the movement of people and ingredients along the Silk Roads.
Another not-to-be-missed addition to the pop-up roster is Big Nath’s BBQ, which will be bringing its iconic and wholesome smoked and slow-cooked meaty BBQ flavours to North Street just in time for the city’s Ameri cans to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday 24 November ’til Sunday 4 December. Taking place on the weekends of 16 and 23 September - including a unique Sunday brunch - guests coming along should expect Persian small plates and Balkan brunches – all with a focus on the traditional Eurasian spirit of sharing.
Next up will be a three week residency with the taco kings Basement 17 Tacos (every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 6 and 23 October). Always a sell out when they’ve brought their authentic Mexican flavours to KASK, this is a chance to get your taco fix for three weeks in a row. There may also be a jalapeño rose on offer… Doubling up as a private event space for hire, the team at KITCHEN BY KASK will also be offering up exclusive use of the venue for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries as well as workshops, book clubs, community events and product launches. Following the recent surge in wedding and birthday requests the team have received at KASK, they feel it’s a great use of the new space to offer private hire - both during the day as well as at night - from the very start. Later in the year, Asian-inspired fried chicken legends, Peckers, will be doing their thing on Thursday 27 October until Saturday 5 November. Taking fan favourite food up a notch with only the best free range chicken, local artisan buns and homemade sauces and pickles, this won’t be Peckers as customers have seen it before – with newfor-KITCHEN sides and vegan options.

Cementing the new restaurant’s offering as ever-eclectic, the fire cooked flavours of Ubuntu and vegan comfort food aficionados, Kabala Kitchen, will also be appearing in the KITCHEN before the end of the year. Charlie Taylor, co-owner of KITCHEN BY KASK, said: “It’s been a tough few years for the hospitality sector - especially for street food traders, given that markets were closed for an extended period during the pandemic – so we wanted to provide a space that these genuinely unbelievable chefs could serve their food in a restaurant setting with a curated drinks list. The Sustainable Fashion Week market will also be taking root in Bristol Beacon, showing visitors exactly how good second-hand can look. Independent vintage brands including Flo-Jo, Origin and Sofo Studio will take over the clothing rails with their best sustainable garments on offer.
Bristol Beacon will also be transformed into the Sustainable Fashion Week Hub between 17th and 18th September, hosting three floors of fashion-focused and environmentally friendly events. From make, mend and alteration workshops to panel talks and clothes swaps, visitors can take proactive steps to supporting sustainable fashion by reimagining their current clothing to keep up with seasonal trends, and learning the ins and outs of the industry.
The UK’s first and only Sustainable Fashion Week is taking place in Bristol between 16th - 25th September, with a full lineup of events, workshops and stylings set to get participants from across the city, online and beyond to reimagine their wardrobes. Each event is united under the four driving themes of Regenerate, Rewear, Repurpose and Reconnect, and will bring organisations, community groups, brands and individuals together to make proactive steps towards disrupting the fast-fashion cycle.
While Sustainable Fashion Week is using Bristol as its base, events will also be taking place online and across the UK between 16th - 25th September.

Sustainable Fashion Week will be debuting its first catwalk show on 21st September, hosted at the ethereal church venue of The Mount Without. Models will be styled in upcycled clothing designed by City of Bristol College fashion students, and glammed up with ethical makeup from headline sponsor, benecos, to prove that preloved is always in style. The event will inspire attendees to look at their wardrobe in a new light and get creative with the clothes they already own.
On 22nd September, Sustainable Fashion Week and Bristol City Centre BID will host a Re-Fresher Your Style day aimed at getting Bristol’s students and freshers to get to know their new home city. The sustainable student shopping day is being held across Park Street and Queens Road and will see businesses with sustainable offerings open their doors to Bristol’s student community with a variety of student discounts, offers and in-store events. This will be followed by a free-to-register sustainable student fashion panel discussion and live styling evening at The Vintage Thrift Store, Park Street. Derek’s father bought the iconic North Street landmark in 1972 when the tobacco factories were the main source of employment in the area. Now 50 years have passed and Derek has been helping the residents of South Bristol out of sticky spots for 50 years as when there is a problem, he jokes that Lion Stores is the “fourth emergency service.”
In a store that can only be described as ‘Aladdin's cave’, shoppers will find stacks of shelves filled to the brim with hardware tools, electricals, vintage radios, cleaning products, decorations and even an Iron Man action figure peering through the shop window.
Lion Stores and Derek have become synonymous with Bedminster and anyone who’s resided in BS3 for a long time will have watched him grow into the incredibly kind man he is. When he was born he lived above Eddie’s Appliances and his family would regularly shop at Dennis Butt Butchers. As a young lad, Derek would cycle home from school to work behind the counter at his father’s business with only one minor aversion… “We’d get all the Will’s girls’ come down and I’d hate serving them as they’d always make me blush.”

Speaking with Derek about how much the shop has changed over the years, he reminisced over the times where they would sell a lot of ornaments; particularly the ‘china shire horses’. “The only place you’re likely to see one of those today is in the charity shops.” Regulars will know that Derek has a penchant for dancing on the pavement outside his store, where the stock continues to grow beyond the bricks and mortardisplaying an array of potted plants and gardening supplies.

What you need • 1 peach, cut into wedges • 1 ripe mango, peeled and cut into wedges • 100ml White rum • 200ml Apple juice • 75cl bottle Spanish white wine, chilled PEACH & MANGO WHITE SANGRIA PEACH COCKTAIL What you need • 411g Can peach slices • 5cm ginger, peeled and finely chopped • 400ml Prosecco, chilled How to make • Heat a barbecue or griddle pan over a high heat • Griddle the peach and mango wedges for 5 mins on each side, or until grill marks appear • Leave to cool, then chop • Pour the rum, apple juice and wine into a large serving jug or carafe and mix • Add the fruit, along with a handful of ice • Stir again and serve • Make it a mocktail: Replace the rum and wine with 850ml diet ginger ale How to make • Add the peaches, 250ml of their juice (or make the juice up with water to 250ml) and the ginger to a food processor and blend until smooth •• Divide the mixture between four serving glasses and top up with prosecco to serve You may be more familiar with traditional red sangria, but this makes a deliciously delicate and fruity alternative This recipe has just three ingredients AND uses up that tin of peaches lurking at the back of the cupboard!

REQUIREMENTS & DUTIES: Landlords must ensure every fixed electrical installation is inspected and tested at least every 5 years, by a qualified person. The regulations also state that a landlord is re quired to obtain a report of the results of the inspection, and supply it to each tenant within 28 days, while also retaining a copy until the next inspection is due. As property investors and letting agents, we are regularly having conversations with people about compliance. What often comes across is that people find it changeable and confusing. It is changeable, this is true, but it needn’t be confusing. With this in mind, we have put together a series on some of the most common compliance issues, in an attempt to explain them, in a way which is succinct and non-confusing. The third in this series is The Electrical Safety Standards in The Private Rental Sector (England) Regulations 2020. The Electrical Safety Standards in The Private Rental Sector (England) Regulations 2020
THE REGULATIONS: The Electrical Safety Standards in The Private Rental Sector (England) Regulations came into force on 1st June 2020. These regulations require landlords to have an up-to-date EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) for each and every rental property.
PENALTIES: Proven breaches of the regulations can result in the local housing authority imposing a financial penalty of up to £30,000 PORTABLE APPLIANCE TESTING
Whilst the above regulations don't cover electrical appliances, where a landlord provides an electrical appliance as part of a tenancy, the law expects the appliance will be maintained in a safe condition and that it will not cause harm to the tenant. Failure to do so could lead to the landlord being sued for negligence. With this in mind, an annual PAT (portable appliance test) is always best practice, but it is not a legal requirement.

Detection Devices (AFDD) will be required in properties considered “high risk” such as buildings with more than 6 floors (or 18m high), care homes, HMOs and purpose built accommodation for students, when there is work carried out such as a rewire, a new consumer unit or additions or alterations to socket circuits. These devices will cost around £150.00 each. This was part of an amendment to the regulations in March 2002, which came in with immediate effect, although the previous amendment is still valid until the end of September. If in doubt, check with your trusted electrician or member of NICEIC or NAPIT.

Stephen Peacock has been recommended to take over the role of Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service from 21 October 2022 until June 2024 after a tough interview process conducted by a cross-party selection committee. Mike Jackson, the council’s current Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service, announced in July that he would leave the post after four years’ service working for the authority and the city. Mike will take up a role as the new joint chief executive of Richmond Upon Thames and Wandsworth Councils. Stephen has been at the council since late 2019, and has overseen the Growth and Regeneration directorate, leading on major projects including the regeneration of Temple Quarter and the council’s house building Marvinprocess.Rees,

As stated on the Visa website: “We are changing the way you pay for fuel at selfservice pumps, making it easier to track your finances. Our innovative payment solution means you can make a quick pit stop to fill up your vehicle without entering the shop, and keep control of your budget at the same time.”
“In the past, when you used a self-service pump to buy fuel, the exact cost would only show up against your account balance one or two days after you filled up. This could make it hard to track your daily spend.

Some said they feared not being able to buy any fuel, if they didn’t have £100 in their account for a ‘hold charge’. But Visa has confirmed that this is not the case. People would still be able to fill up, providing they had enough funds in their account for the amount of fuel they were buying.
Supermarkets in the UK will soon start to implement a “hold charge” when customers fill up their vehicles at petrol stations and pay at the pump. In order to guarantee that people have the money they need to make their purchase, retailers will temporarily charge a customer’s debit or credit card up to £100. After collecting payment for the fuel purchased, any unspent funds will be re Theleased.new payment scheme, which has been trialled at dozens of petrol stations over the last few months, is set to be rolled out to every petrol station in the UK as payment companies Mastercard and Visa have up dated their policies. Visa said it had decided to bring in the change to help people "keep an eye on [their] finances]" and Mastercard appears to have followed suit.
HUGE CHANGES AT PAY-AT-PUMP FUEL AT SUPERMARKETS AND PETROL STATIONS
This comes after hundreds of people took to social media to express their concerns recently that supermarkets were set to introduce new fees for people buying petrol.
Pay at pump has been enabled to all card holders, meaning more drivers can access a more convenient way to pay for fuel and benefit from the new system.

When you insert or tap your card at a selfservice pump, your bank will now temporarily reserve an amount from your available balance while you fill up. This could be up to £100 (a standard tank of petrol). Once you’ve finished filling up, this will be updated, and you’ll only be charged for the amount of petrol you bought. The funds-check will never be taken from your Ifaccount.youraccount balance is below £100, for ex ample £20, this would be communicated back to the fuel pump by your bank enabling that amount of fuel to be dispensed. This means the pump will automatically cut out once you have reached the approved amount (or before if you choose to dispense less). This is called ‘partial authorisation’ and ensures you can get the fuel you need. This should happen almost instantly but occasionally it may take a little longer. Contact your bank if this is not the case. The exact date the change will come into affect has not been confirmed.
Mastercard outlined a five-step process for paying for gas at pay-at-the-pump locations. In a statement explaining how Mastercard customers would be affected, it read: "The way you pay for your fuel at an automated fuel pump in the UK is changing. Your card issuer/bank will temporarily reserve up to £99 of your available balance while you fill up. Then, when you have completed fuelling, you’ll be charged for the correct amount of fuel you have used and the remainder of any reserved funds will be released back to your available balance.”
When asked when the process would be implemented at all UK petrol stations, a spokesperson for Visa said online: “The new pay at pump process is already live at many petrol stations and has been for some time –in fact, the service has been available across Europe for more than five years. In the UK, it is already used by many independent petrol stations and rollout is being completed across the major supermarkets... “Previously, basic bank account users were often not able to pay at an automated fuel pump.

We were at City Hall when the petition, signed by thousands of Bristolians, was presented to the Council. Unfortunately, the administration at the time declined to support the idea. More recently, we asked the Metro Mayor if he would back ‘bus franchising’. He told us he preferred an ‘enhanced partnership’ approach with our bus operators, but that still leaves too much decision-making power in the hands of profit-driven, private companies. ‘Bus Franchising’ is the system operated in London and shortly in Manchester.

We have written to the Metro Mayor asking that he ensures BCT services are taken over by others and suggesting that he considers taking over Bristol’s Dial-a-Ride service and other BCT services directly. We also asked for more information on the 36 bus route and have been given the following response:
BRISTOL BUS CRISIS: Our bus service has left a lot to be desired for many years, but these last few weeks have been absolutely terrible for thousands of local residents who depend on buses, both here in Brislington and further afield. First, we had the announcement of huge cuts to bus services coming into force this October, including three services, the 36, 96 and 178 here in Brislington. The Metro Mayor, Dan Norris, has highlighted the national and regional shortage of bus drivers as the principal reason for these cuts. In addition, passenger numbers are still below pre-pandemic levels, meaning a loss of revenue for bus operators. Then we heard that the most vulnerable in our city have been left with no service at all after the collapse of the Bristol Dial-a-Ride service. Finally, Bristol Community Transport shut down all of their operations within the city with very little notice.
“Thank you for your email about the number 36 bus service and the upcoming changes to First Bus timetables from the 9th of October. The 36 will follow its current route from the city centre as far as St Anne’s. From the First Avenue stop, it will turn right onto Newbridge Road (rather than left onto Wick Road as it does now), and rejoin the city-bound route at Feeder Road, forming a one-way loop around St Anne’s. As such, the bus will still serve Guildford Road and Kingfisher School.

CLEAN AIR ZONE: With all the cuts to bus services, this is now looking rather ill-timed, but Bristol City Council will be introducing a Clean Air Zone on Monday 28 November 2022 to reduce harmful pollution from vehicles. Poor air quality has a major impact on the health of everyone in the city and the Clean Air Zone will help tackle this issue and meet govern ment targets for cleaner air in 2023. The zone is in the central area where air quality is poorest. No vehicles will be banned from driving in the zone, but older and more polluting vehicles will have to pay a daily charge to drive in the zone. 71 per cent of vehicles already meet the zone’s emission standards. The council is offering financial support and advice to help people upgrade their vehicles or switch to a cleaner way of travelling. Many have told us the free loan has made them accelerate their plans to add EVs to their existing fleets.
“We all have a role to play in Bristol getting cleaner air and although some petrol and diesel vehicles will be allowed in the Clean Air Zone, the EV scheme provides a helpful taster step for anyone thinking about switching to electric for their business.”
Councillor Don Alexander, Cabinet Member for Transport said, “I’m pleased to see our free electric van trial scheme has been hugely popular since its launch only a few months ago.
34 Bristol City Council’s free electric vehicle (EV) hire scheme will now include licenced Hackney Carriage drivers after a successful launch phase, as the city prepares for the Clean Air Zone in November (2022).
“Taxis are an important part of our transport infrastructure in Bristol, so we’re pleased to extend the free EV hire scheme to our licensed Hackney Carriage drivers. Getting a sense for the smooth ride and price of charging will present local drivers with a cleaner vehicle choice and the opportunity to help us reduce toxic air pollution which is so harmful to our health.
In March, the council launched a new scheme offering free trials of EVs to Bristol organisations to encourage them to switch to cleaner ways of travelling ahead of the zone launching on 28 November. Organisations like businesses, charities and sole traders can trial electric vans and cars for up to two months, to see if EVs could work for them and what the benefits are.
The free EV loan scheme, which is fully funded by National Highways, allows the council’s fleet services team to purchase up to 64 vehicles in batches, with 12 currently on loan and 15 arriving soon. The vehicles will be available to loan to local organisations until March 2024. From this month (September 2022), two of London Electric Vehicle Company's (LEVC) purpose-built electric TX taxis will be available to Bristol City Council licensed hackney drivers, for free loans of two to four weeks, as part of this scheme.
Patrick Masih, a local taxi driver, said; “I’m delighted to be part of this trial. LEVC is a very elegant, durable and strong vehicle. It is the way forward to improve our local air quality, reduce noise pollution and lower carbon emissions across Bristol. It is import ant that taxi drivers test LEVC in our current fuel crisis. Trying it out allows us to accurately reflect on the big decision and financial commitment of switching to electric vehicles.” Should the new taxis attract a very high number of free loan applications, the council will prioritise taxi drivers with vehicles which will not meet the emission standards of Bristol’s Clean Air Zone or those whose vehicles are nearing the end of their working Taxilife. drivers applying for a free electric taxi loan must operate at least one petrol or diesel vehicle and make frequent trips in and out of the city on the M32 or other motorways and major routes or travel regularly through the Clean Air Zone. There is a waiting list of Bristol-based organisations already signed up to try an electric van or car.
Angela Halliwell, National Highways' Head of Carbon and Air Quality, said: “We are working with councils across the country to encourage businesses to make the switch to electric vehicles and we expect many more to start using electric vehicles when they experience the savings possible. “We’ve invested £3.2 million in this initiative with Bristol City Council – a key example of how we are using designated funds to benefit the environment and communities around our roads as well as the people travelling and working on them.” Each taxi is driven exclusively by electricity but features an additional on-board generator (a small 1.5 litre petrol engine), which is known as a range-extender. This increases the number of miles that the taxi driver can travel on one charge from 64 miles to 318 miles, completely eliminating range anxi ety. Featuring flexible space for up to six passengers, the TX includes an integrated wheelchair ramp and can accommodate a forward-facing wheelchair – the only taxi of its kind to do so.

Claire Trevor-Roper, one of the directors of the Mudlarks, said: "We’re extremely pleased that the new sluice gates will be installed soon, and that the council’s executive has committed to maintain and manage them. It’ll be interesting to find out how much silt has re-entered the lake since it re-opened in June. This will provide a guide of how often the lake will need to be drained in the future.”

Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, the council's heritage champion, added: “This latest phase in Marine Lake’s restoration will ensure the best possible retention of water and aid the partial removal of silt. The season has shown how sensible we’ve been bringing this 94-year-old bathing facility back into proper public use. It’s certainly been very popular and it’ll be interesting to see how many continue swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding and generally enjoying themselves in the water as autumn approaches. I wonder if any descendants of those who created the lake still live in Weston? If so, they can be rightly proud of their forebears.”
Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare is set to temporarily close later this month to enable the replacement of two faulty sluice gates. In order to carry out the improvement works, North Somerset Council must close the tidal lake from Monday 19 September. The work is expected to take a few weeks and will reopen when the tide is high enough to overtop the lake. The main cause of DNA damage is oxida tive stress. Even if a man’s sperm count is normal, the sperm quality may not be good enough to result in a pregnancy.

BAKERS DOLPHIN HELPS PROVIDE SUMMER SMILES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN
Weston-super-Mare primary schools enjoy a wide range of fun and educational activities during the long summer holidays.
Dolphin has helped provide miles of summer smiles for school children by once again working with education support business Together,Elementa.they’ve helped children from 12
Around 35 children aged between 4 and 12 enjoyed excursions to places such as SS Great Britain, Redcatch Community Garden, West Country Water Park and Wild Place, among others. Bakers Dolphin and Elementa are both based in Weston-super-Mare, and this is the second year they have worked together.

The project focuses on healthy activities, promoting exercise, healthy food and looking after yourself, all of which can improve both the physical and mental health of those taking part. The project is funded from the Government HAF programme, delivered in partnership with North Somerset Council.
“They get to experience new things, learn some new lifeskills, make new friends and improve their self confidence and it’s great for us to be able to support such a scheme.”
The summer scheme was part-funded by the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, supported and facilitated by North Somerset Council. Elementa are increasing their work with local children this academic year with them opening an alternative education provision, with this in mind Elementa are looking forward to working with Bakers Dolphin ahead of next year’s project.
