Tips to save money on petrol and deisel

Simple ways to save money on petrol and diesel as the price goes up!

With fuel prices at an all time high as the cost of living crisis deepens, many people will be looking for quick ways to save money. Petrol jumped to 148.02p per litre last week rising above the previous record high of 147.72p on November 21 last year. Adding to the misery for motorists, diesel costs also rose to a new record high of 151.57 pence per litre. Six simple ways you can save fuel which can ultimately save you money,

1. Be gentle with the accelerator and use a high gear

Gentle acceleration is important in fuel-efficient driving and the ‘the biggest secret’ to achieving high miles per gallon is driving in the highest possible gear for your vehicle while staying in the speed limit.

Remember that the faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses.

2. Dress for the weather

It may be winter and motorists are more likely to crank up the heating but using the heating and air conditioning uses engine power and therefore fuel consumption. Instead, we advised that motorists dress for the weather.

3. Empty your boot

The more weight you’re carrying in your car, the more fuel you’ll be using.

4. Having a roof rack

According to statistics from the Energy Saving Trust, an empty roof rack will add 16% drag to your car when travelling at 75mph and a roof box will add 39%. Both make your vehicle much less fuel efficient.

5. Keep your car well looked after

The RAC suggests that regular maintenance and servicing will improve the efficiency of your car, including making sure your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Underinflated and overinflated tyres can affect your fuel economy.

6. Keep moving

Slowing down and having to accelerate again uses more fuel, so motorists are advised to drive smoothly and keep their car moving. It’s important to remain in gear as the fuel cut-off switch in a fuel injection engine is then activated, meaning virtually no fuel is used while braking. Driving up hills also destroys fuel economy so motorists are advised to accelerate a little before you reach a hill then ease off as you drive up.

The government’s online tool tells motorists whether they’ll need to pay to travel in Bristol’s zone when it’s introduced in late summer.

The government has directed Bristol, along with other cities, to introduce a Clean Air Zone to reduce harmful pollution from vehicles. Birmingham, Bath and Portsmouth introduced Clean Air Zones in 2021. Bristol’s zone will start operating in summer 2022.

The vehicle checker has been developed by the government to help drivers plan and check whether they will need to pay the charge in each zone. Businesses can also use it to check their vehicles by uploading a spreadsheet of the registration numbers of all the vehicles they own.

Bristol’s zone is a central area where pollution is highest. No vehicles are banned. Only older and more polluting vehicles will be charged to travel inside the zone.

Charges will not apply to:

For those with vehicles that would be charged, the council has secured £42m from government for grants and loans to reduce the cost of replacing vehicles that would be charged to enter the zone. The money can be used to trade-in a vehicle for an equivalent new or second-hand model that meets the zone’s emission standards.

Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol, said: “We’re making sure that the clean air zone won’t have a detrimental impact on people on low incomes or businesses that have already had a difficult two years. That’s why we have £42 million available to help people to get cleaner vehicles.“It’s easy to check whether your vehicle will be charged. I urge everyone to use the online vehicle checker and enter your registration number as soon as possible. “If your vehicle will be charged to enter the zone then you can contact us to find out what help you can get with either exemptions, a loan or even a grant which you don’t pay back.

“You don’t need to buy a brand new electric car which are unaffordable for most people – it could be as simple as going to your local second hand dealer and upgrading your 2003 car for a 2006 one.”

• Euro 4, 5 and 6 petrol vehicles, roughly 2006 upwards

• Euro 6 diesel vehicles, roughly end of 2015 onwards

The council estimates that 71 per cent of vehicles travelling into the city already meet the zone’s emission standards. 38
