Over 40 public living rooms
More than 40 Public Living Rooms are now open across North Somerset as free and welcoming spaces for anyone who needs extra support to keep warm this winter.
North Somerset Council has worked with numerous organisations and community groups to help set up free Public Living Rooms across the region in direct response to the Cost-of-Living crisis with libraries, community centres, faith groups and many more stepping forward and opening their doors as dedicated warm spaces. To help find your nearest Public Living Room, a new interactive map is available at Public Living Rooms (n-somerset.gov. uk). North Somerset Council has allocated over £25,000 in grants to help support organisations wishing to set up a Public Living Room with over £13,500 allocated so far – with more to come as additional warm spaces across the region come on board. Cllr Mike Bell, Deputy Leader at North Somerset Council said: “Many people in our community face enormous pressure due to the rising cost of living and onset of winter. This is a council that cares about people and I’m proud that we’ve been able to support so many organisations who are now helping run Public Living Rooms at this crucial time. These are welcoming places for you to come, grab a cup of tea, a bit of company and most importantly keep warm this winter.”
In addition to the £25,000 funding provided by North Somerset Council so far, match funding of £2,500 have each been given by Alliance Homes, Bristol Water and Wessex Water to support North Somerset’s Public Living Rooms initiatives.
Cllr Bell continued: “I’d like to thank the organisations who have contributed financially to this great work and helped to set up PublicLiving Rooms across the area.
No one should go cold at any time, and it is disappointing that these schemes are even needed at all. However, North Somerset residents should know that support is here, and we really are in this together to help each other.” The interactive Public Living Room map is also available to view at https:// www.n-somerset.gov.uk/my-services/ north-somerset-together/public-living-rooms-north-somerset alongside links to maps showing spaces registered with the Camerados https://camerados.org/public-living-room/ and Warm Spaces https://www.warmwelcome. uk/#find-a-space initiatives. Residents will therefore be able to access up-todate information about North Somerset spaces that have been registered with one or more of the initiatives.
Key organisations in North Somerset, including North Somerset Council, set up an area-wide Cost of Living working group earlier this year under the umbrella #NorthSomersetTogether. COUNCIL TO CONSIDER FUTURE OF LAND IT OWNS
orth Somerset Council will be discussing potential future housing and employment development on council-owned land at the full council meeting on Tuesday 8 November. The sites could provide up to 1,500 homes and new job opportunities, while also raising up to £25 million to fund capital priorities such as schools, roads and leisure facilities.
The development programme to be considered by councillors was shaped by almost 700 responses received during an eight-week consultation (25 April to 20 June 2022). Key priorities for respondents included affordable housing and higher levels of sustainability. The consultation also highlighted the need for further engagement with local communities, including the council’s ward members, so that the future of some sites could be considered in more detail.
Councillor Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for placemaking and economy, said: “By developing on our own land, we can deliver things that the private sector won’t. At the same time, we can generate income to fund other priorities that residents want to see us deliver.
“This also demonstrates that we’re doing everything we can to meet the government’s national housing targets, reducing the risk of unplanned and less sustainable development taking place in other locations. However, the desire to undertake further engagement on some of the sites demonstrates the importance we place on hearing what local communities have to say and considering all views. “Thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to our consultation, which has shaped the development programme going to full council next week. It’s important to stress that some of these sites may not progress to development after further discussion and investigation. Any that do will be subject to detailed individual consultations, so residents, businesses and organisations including parish and town councils will have plenty of further opportunity to have their say on our plans.” This is the latest milestone following the council’s adoption of a development strategy in February 2021. This sets out its ambitions for the use of land it owns to:
Provide homes and jobs that meet the needs of its communities – current and future – while helping with government targets for housing supply, Offer better quality and more sustainable developments, Deliver sites that the market won’t deliver, including difficult brownfield land and employment sites, and Generate funding to help deliver other riorities, such as investing in schools, transport links and leisure facilities.

Bristol hoteliers have set their sights on a starry, starry night as preparations step up for the fifth ‘Night of the Stars’ event, which celebrates and honours the heroes of the city’s hospitality sector. The glittering gala, organised by the Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA), will take place on March 3 at Ashton Gate, which belongs to one of the events main sponsors, Bristol Sports. Six main sponsors and two drinks sponsors have already signed up to support the event, which the BHA says is a very welcome vote of confidence in their businesses, which have had an extremely challenging few years due to the impact of Brexit and the pandemic. The process for award nominations will begin towards the end of this month, in nine categories. In February this year around 350 people attended the celebration and it is hoped that around 400 will attend next year’s gala. BHA Chair Raphael Herzog said: “We’re delighted – and very grateful – to have already secured eight significant sponsors for the event.
“This represents a huge vote of confidence in our sector and shows our talented teams that their incredible efforts during these challenging times have been recognised and are valued. “The evening gives us a chance to further acknowledge the considerable contribution that the hospitality industry makes to Bristol’s economy and to celebrate heroic individuals and teams who have gone above and beyond in their work.
“The evening also highlights that, even in the most difficult times, it’s still possible to find something – and some people – to be proud of and who have risen to the challenges they face.”
The evening will see awards presented for: Employee of the Year (front of house); Employee of the Year (heart of house); Rising Star; Chef of the Year (up to Sous Chef level); Hotel Bright Idea & Best Innovation; Team of the Year; Unsung Hero; Community Spirit and Green Initiative.
There are still some sponsorship opportunities available. The BHA is currently in talks with a number of other companies and hope to finalise sponsor details within the next four or five weeks but are still happy to hear from anyone else interested in becoming a sponsor. Mr Herzog added: “Partnering with us will provide you with a platform to showcase your own brand to the hospitality industry, which makes a significant contribution to Bristol’s economy every year. “It will ensure that your business is at the forefront of the hearts and minds of those businesses operating in the sector. “You will gain access to key decision makers in the industry, showcasing you as a leader among your competitors and providing you with an opportunity to develop and nurture your partnerships. “We would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss the various sponsorship opportunities available, and to tell you how a partnership with us can work for your business. “As an event partner, we will develop a bespoke package appropriate for your business and brand, and you will be profiled as a partner to the awards. “This is a positive opportunity for businesses and sponsors to give a huge vote of confidence to the hospitality industry, which makes a significant contribution to the local economy every year.” Anyone interested in finding out more about the opportunities available should email info@bristol-hoteliers.co.uk The six main sponsors who have already signed up for 2023’s Night of the Stars are: Bristol College, Integra, Sounds Commercial, Bristol Sport, Bristol BID team and COORS, with the two drinks sponsors being Pommery and FXC brand.

ARE YOU READY FOR BRISTOL’S CLEAN AIR ZONE?
There’s only a few week’s to go until Bristol’s Clean Air Zone launches on 28 November.
Bristol City Council estimates that over 71% vehicles in Bristol are already Clean Air Zone compliant and will not be charged. The local authority expects this figure to rise following the launch of the Zone, much like Birmingham City Council, who introduced a CAZ D in June 2021. At the beginning of June 2021, they knew that 79.8% vehicles were already compliant and this increased to 88.8% at the end of December in the same year. No vehicles will be banned in Bristol’s Clean Air Zone, but older and more polluting vehicles will have to pay a daily charge to drive into a small, central zone. All residents and businesses are urged to check their vehicles using the Government’s online vehicle checker.
Mayor of Bristol Marvin Rees said: “We are committed to reducing air pollution in Bristol and continue to offer people support to consider alternative, more sustainable ways of travelling in our city. We want Bristol to be a healthier place for everyone to grow up, live and work, but recognise that this comes with challenges. “We’ve been able to secure financial support of £42m from government for people and businesses to use, but now Bristolians need to make sure they’re getting ready. I want to remind people that there are several types of support which are open for applications before the Clean Air Zone launches in four weeks’ time.”
Temporary exemptions are still available to eligible people, to give them more time to change or upgrade their vehicle. Grants and loans are available to apply for via the council’s website, which can be used to change or upgrade vehicles. Free active travel offers are available for people in Bristol to try out new ways of travelling that are better for their health, wellbeing, and the environment too. Anyone who lives or works in Bristol is eligible to receive these offers and can apply on the council website now. Drivers in Bristol will start to see Clean Air Zone signs appearing at the side of the road, in preparation for the Zone launching next month. These signs have a green cloud symbol on with the words ‘CAZ D’ inside. This reflects the type of Clean Air Zone chosen in Bristol, where older and more polluting commercial and private vehicles have will to pay a charge.
Once the zone is operating, daily charges will apply 24 hours a day (midnight to midnight), seven days a week, all year round when entering or driving in the zone. Charges must be paid within six days via www.gov.uk/clean-air-zones or by calling the Clean Air Zone support line on 0300 029 8888 (Monday to Friday: 8am to 7pm, Saturday: 8am to 2pm). Users of smart phones can also pay the charge using free-to-use apps like Caura, but always make sure platforms are trustworthy before entering any personal payment information. People will not receive written notification or any kind of alert that they have entered Bristol’s Clean Air Zone or that a payment is due. Individuals and businesses are fully responsible for managing this. Business owners can sign up to the Business Accounts Feature, to set up a Bristol-specific account to help manage payment for multiple vehicles entering and exiting the Zone. If Clean Air Zone charges are not paid on time, people may be issued with a Penalty Charge Notice of £120, which is reduced to £60 if it is paid within 14 days.
