South Glos Council Making It Easier

SOUTH GLOS COUNCIL IS MAKING IT EASIER FOR MORE TO MOVE TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES

People hoping to make the switch to an electric vehicle (EV) will find it easier in the future thanks to work being carried out by South Gloucestershire Council. This will help to reduce emissions on our roads and is part of our Climate Emergency response to make South Gloucestershire carbon neutral by 2030.

The council has launched a 12-week consultation (11 July) on a new strategy looking at where EV charging points could be installed in the area to help support those making the switch to EVs. As part of the Climate Emergency the council has pledged to lead South Gloucestershire to become carbon neutral by 2030. This commitment includes reducing car use in favour of walking and cycling and public transport. However, for those journeys that need to be made by car the council is encouraging the use of EVs. Increasing the n umber of publicly available charge points will support those making the switch. EV ownership is already growing significantly and by 2030 it is expected that 30 per cent of cars on the road will be EVs. The council’s goal is for the majority of households in South Gloucestershire to be within one mile of EV charge points. The new EV Charging Strategy looks to complement the growth in EV charging provision in the private sector by filling the gaps, especially in more rural communities. Councillor Steve Reade, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “As a council we are committed to encouraging more people to make the switch to sustainable travel options such as walking, cycling or public transport. “We understand though that some journeys need to be made by car and that is why we have launched a new EV Charging Strategy for South Gloucestershire. We want to support those who are making the switch to an EV and encourage more to consider an EV for their next vehicle.

“By improving and increasing the EV charging network across the area we are making owning an EV a more realistic option and I encourage people to complete the consultation.”

BRISTOL FUNERALS TO STAY ONLINE

A live funeral streaming service in Bristol, born out of covid restrictions that limited the number of mourners allowed to attend the ceremony, is to continue post-lockdown due to public demand. Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said live streaming had proved extremely popular and helped people feel part of an important and meaningful moment in their lives.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands in Alveston engaged the services of a professional cameraman Steve Haines as part of its packages in March 2021 when only 30 people could attend a funeral Steve, from Bristol Projector Hire, is to continue the service as many families say it helps relatives and friends who live far away to be part of the service and there are still significant numbers not able to attend because of Covid levels among the population. Steve Haines said: “Live streaming wasn’t anything I’d done before the pandemic and is without a doubt the most rewarding job I have ever done, and I get back so much positive feedback it feels quite humbling. “I am delighted to continue to offer my services to Bristol Memorial Woodlands which hopefully brings some comfort to people at a very difficult time.” Steve also provides families with a DVD of the event so they can watch it back later and uploads the videos to a private streaming site so people from all around the world can watch it. He said: “Although we are no longer in lockdown the streaming service has become a fixture as part of our bespoke packages. We’re pleased with the reception it gets from our families and it is important for us to do anything we can do to help people who have lost a loved one.

“The quality of Steve’s work is excellent. His footage is of extremely high quality with excellent sound whether you are watching it close by or across the world. We allow more time for families to say goodbye at Bristol Memorial Woodlands and this is just another way to help people through difficult times.” Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a nature reserve which hosts funeral services and burials within 100-acres of woodland and meadows where trees and wildflowers are planted around the plots where loved ones are laid to rest. The area is managed by a charitable trust and will be open forever for future generations to visit. For more information about events at Bristol Memorial Woodlands visit www.memorialwoodlands.com,

Using two broadcast quality cameras, Steve films from the balcony of the chapel at Bristol Memorial Woodlands and a second camera to capture the coffin coming in, guests arriving and people lighting candles. 34

HOW TO AVOID GETTING HOOKED BY SCAMS

The police are urging people to be vigilant when it comes to suspicious messages to protect themselves from scammers.

Phishing, text messages and emails impersonating well-known organisations remains a common tactic used by criminals. Whether it’s a fake email asking for an individual to ‘verify’ bank details or a text message claiming they have been in contact with someone that has Covid-19, the goal is usually the same – to trick an individual into revealing personal and financial information. The most impersonated organisations in phishing emails reported last year were the NHS, HMRC and Gov.uk.

As of 31 May 2022, the public has made more than 12 million reports to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service, with the removal of approximately 83,000 scams and 153,000 malicious websites.

The Suspicious Email Reporting Service was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre and the City of London Police in April 2020 to enable the public to forward suspicious emails to an automated system that scans them for malicious links.

DS Tom Williams, of the Cyber Crime team said in a statement online: “Many people will recall having received a suspicious link or text, as these phishing scams are among the most common threats we face. It can affect individuals and businesses and have significant consequences on the victim’s financial situation.

“It is important that if you ever receive one of these links that you do not click on it and provide personal or banking information. Instead, forward the message to the text or email reporting system and block the email address or phone number so the fraudsters cannot reach you again.” People are also being advised to take time to consider what you have received and what the message is asking you.

PCC Mark Shelford, national PCC lead for Economic and Cybercrime, said online: “Phishing scams are another example of fraudsters wanting to financially benefit from both individuals and businesses. Please be vigilant of unexpected messages or calls that ask for your personal or financial information. “If you do receive call or message that you think might be a scam, do not respond to it. Instead, contact the organisation directly using contact information from the company’s official website and not the links or numbers provided in the message.

“Your bank or any other official source will never ask you to supply personal information via email or text message. The more awareness this is around such scams, the more people we can protect to falling victim to these heartless scammers.”

Virtually all phone providers are part of a scheme that allows you to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. When a text is reported to 7726, the provider can investigate the origin of the text and rearrange to block or ban the sender if it’s found to be malicious.

Since May 2022, 13,000 scams nationally have been removed as a result of suspicious text messages reported using the 7726 service.

1. If you have any doubts about a message, contact the organisation directly. Don’t use the numbers or address in the message – use the details from their official website. Remember, your bank (or any other official source) will never ask you to supply personal information via email. 2. If you think an email could be a scam, you can report it by forwarding the email to: report@phishing.gov.uk. Send us emails that feel suspicious, even if you’re not certain they’re a scam – we can check. 3. Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious.

4. If you’ve lost money or provided personal information as a result of a phishing scam, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.

South West children facing food insecurity being helped by Wyke Farms

Wyke Farms, the UK’s largest independent cheese producers and producers of renewable energy, today announce their contributions to FareShare South West. As the largest food redistribution charity in the region, FareShare South West is partnering with local authorities and partner charities to deliver food to more than 50 sites across the South West throughout the Summer break. The ‘Food for Holiday Projects’ work aims to help children and families facing food insecurity over the school summer holidays.

Wyke Farms have previously supported the project with generous donations in 2019 and 2021 when the charity supplied food for over 6 million meals, benefitting more than 50,000 vulnerable people across the South West. This year the company are providing even more; there will be 6 donations at 536 kg each over the summer period, totalling 3.2 tonnes of cheese and butter. Wyke Farms have selected butter and grated cheese for sandwiches as well as block cheddar for children to use in cooking activities. Jennifer Gray, Head of Marketing at Wyke Farms, says: “We are delighted to be contributing again this year. School holidays can be a challenging for families and we hope our donation has positive impact for those who need it”.

Lucy Bearn, Director of Operations at FareShare South West says: “There are more children at risk of holiday hunger than ever before. When the school gates close for the Summer, families who typically rely on free school meals to keep their children fed are left without a lifeline. With support from suppliers like Wyke Farms, charities like FareShare South West can stop children from going hungry this Summer. ” Wyke Farms’ cheese and butter is made with the milk from their cows grazing the lush pastures of the Mendip Hills in the centre of the Cheddar making region in Somerset.

Wyke Farms products are available in selected Lidl stores and in South West UK ASDA, CO-OP, and Tesco stores.

ESCAPE THE MAZE

Can you find your way through this difficult maze?

People from Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire who saved lives through the gift of organ donation have been posthumously honoured at a moving award ceremony.

They received the Order of St John Award for Organ Donation, run in conjunction with NHS Blood and Transplant, which was given to their families and loved ones on their behalf.

The private award ceremony was held at Ashton Gate Stadium, Ashton Road, Bristol, on 4 July honouring 17 organ donors, including four from Gloucestershire, three from Bristol and two from Wiltshire.

Thousands of families are receiving the award across the UK this year, at regional ceremonies or privately. More than 4,000 people donated their organs after death in 2019, 2020 and 2021, leading to around 10,000 patients' lives being saved or transformed over those three years*.

Mick Messinger, Chancellor of the Priory of England and the Islands of the Order of St John, said: “We’re delighted to be able to work with NHS Blood and Transplant to run the Order of St John Awards for Organ Donation again. It is so important to recognise all organ donors and it is an inspiration to meet the families attending the ceremonies. Organ donation saves lives, and it is a genuine privilege to be able to say thank you to these families, whose loved ones have had such an impact on others.” Organ donation is a most precious gift and even though the law around organ donation has changed to an opt out system, it is important that people know that families will still be consulted. It is still just as important as ever to register your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and let you family know what you want to happen. Anthony Clarkson, Director of Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “The pride families feel at these moving ceremonies truly is inspirational. Transplant patients tell us that organ donors and their families are heroes and the Order of St John award is a chance for us all to recognise them and their amazing contribution to society. “We hope these awards will inspire other people in Bristol, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, to tell their families they want to save lives. Being clear with your family about what you want makes things easier at a difficult time, leave them certain about your organ donation decision. Families say donation is a source of pride that helps them in their grief and we want to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to donate and save lives. “Please tell your family about your organ donation decision and join the NHS Organ Donor Register at www.organdonation.nhs. uk.”

The Order of St John Award for Organ Donation features the organ donation heart logo backed by the Maltese Cross - which is used by the Order of St John - above the words ‘add life, give hope’. The award can be received at a regional ceremony or sent to the family privately. They are open to people of all faiths or of no faith.

For more information about organ donation, or to register your organ donation decision, please visit: www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23. NHS app users can also use the service to record, check or update their organ donation decision. Please tell your family about your organ donation decision and leave them certain.
