Your garden in July

Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display. PLANT OF THE MONTH: Salvia A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs

The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.

With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.

This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.

8

SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn. How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.

Keep Your Smartphone Protected Viruses and malware are often associated with computers, but, with the increasing popularity of smartphones and the personal data they contain, viruses and malware have started to target the smartphones. While less prevalent than PC viruses - for the moment at least -smartphones CAN be infected by a virus or malware program.

It remains true that Android and Windows phones are more susceptible than iPhones. Apple’s iOS operating system is designed to limit access to core functionality and the ability to execute actions that would interact with core functionality. Doing so makes iOS more secure.

E-mail attachments It may also be possible for an e-mail to infect a smartphone if the user attempts to open an infected attachment on their smartphone.

The top 3 movies For July

July’s summer movie slate is filled with returning franchises and plenty of exciting spectacle. Whether you like your big screen entertainment super-fuelled, music-filled, or quite literally caught between a rock and a hard place, there’s lots going on at Cineworld!

INCREDIBLES 2

Kicking us off on the July 12th, if you hadn’t already guessed, is action star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s latest action thriller Skyscraper. Releasing just a few months following the success of Rampage, this time the former wrestler finds himself scaling a fictional high-rise block known only as ‘The Pearl’ in a bid to save his family. But can this film take the action genre to new heights? Pixar’s first family return to the big screen just one day later in Incredibles 2, the highly anticipated sequel which picks up mere moments after where we last left them in the 2004 original. This time it’s Elastigirl in the hot seat, tasked with defending the world while Mr Incredible safeguards the kids at home. Fast-forward to July 20th and you can expect ABBA fans to weave out of the woodwork, flocking to cinemas to see Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Set 10 years after the toe-tapping original, expect more songs, more holiday romance, and even more reasons to unleash your inner dancing queen.

MAMMA MIA! HERE WE GO AGAIN

SKYSCRAPER Aaron Potter is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to view at your local cinema.

Summer Berry Pudding Ingredients

300g strawberry 250g blackberry 100g redcurrant 500g raspberry OR 1¼kg/2lb 12oz mixed berries and currants of your choice 175g golden caster sugar 7 slices day-old white bread, from a square, medium-cut loaf

Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper – keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves – stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice. Line the bowl with cling film and prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. Overlap two pieces of cling film in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole. Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go. Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top – trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club With the season nearing its mid-point there is still much to look forward to ---- including the annual tour ---- and equally a lot to look back on in what has so far been a season full of enjoyable bowling and some notable successes. The Ladies League Team made a great start to the season with wins at Portishead and Yate and at home to Severnvale and Olveston B to see them in the top three in Division Two of the Bristol Ladies League. But that is not all ---- they came close to a win at Henleaze in the Top Club Competition on May 21st, losing by just three shots across singles, pairs, triples and fours. A few days later they were in action again, this time against Bristol Arrow in the Inter Club Competition ---- one rink playing at home and one away. The home rink lost by three shots but, away from home an impressive 23-15 win was enough to take the tie on aggregate and progress to the next round against Olveston. This game was played on Saturday 16th June and a very strong Olveston side came out in front at both venues. But --- it was a well contested game and with some excellent bowling on both sides. The Men’s League Team has been a little less successful but did record a 10-0 win in a game against Bristol B that started in a remarkable way on one rink with a Hot Shot ---- all eight woods nearer the jack than any of the opponents --- quite an achievement. Trevor Scanlon, Phil Cormack, Alan Coolstring and Ken Grimes qualified for the coveted Hot Shot Badge in achieving what they did. The team has advanced to the second round of the GBA Two Rink Competition to play GB Britton A following the withdraw of Tewkesbury B. This will be a home tie on June 22nd. David Hinksman played Pete Cross at Kingswood and Hanham on Friday 8th June in the Champion of Champions Competition. It was a closely contested game in the early stages with the lead changing hands more than once. But, in a game where the aim is to reach 21 shots first Pete eventually ran out as winner by 21 shots to 10. There was a return to Fry Island at Caversham on Sunday May 27th to play the Island Bohemian Club at their green in the middle of the River Thames. First visited two years ago this is a popular fixture, full of interest, with a short boat trip in a small boat to the island and views of activities on the River Thames throughout the visit.

18

On a very warm afternoon play was on all six rinks. City and Port did manage to draw on two of them ---- but, most importantly, it was a very enjoyable afternoon --- bowling was good and the hosts looked after their visitors very well. At the end of the game there was a two course meal and the hosts sang the traditional Island Bohemian song. A great occasion organised by Lis Davies and Bill Hatherall. Captain for the day was Merv May. Presidents Day --- earlier in the season than last year ---- was blessed with fine weather and a good attendance on June 9th. Twenty three bowlers took part in a game of fifteen ends, on three rinks --there was a slight twist ---- after five ends there was draw for positions in the team ---- leading to some funny playing positions --- but --- it was all for fun!!! Another five ends and --- another draw!! There was a prize for each member of the team with the highest number of shots at the end of the afternoon --- 15 ends. The winning team was ---Sally Coulstring, Lis Davies, Julie Looker and Merv. May with 26 shots. But --- the afternoon started with a spider --- no legs--- when the jack is placed in the centre of the green and each bowler, one foot in the ditch and one on the green has one wood to finish nearest to that jack. It isn’t easy --- pure chance really, but there has to be a winner. Incredibly --- David Garrod was the winner for the third – or was it the fourth consecutive spider – he doesn’t know how he does it either. The afternoon ended in style with and excellent barbeque ---- prepared this year by Bill Cook – it really was good. Thanks go to Warburtons for their generous contribution to this year’s event. The club does have a new bowler ---- Howard Surman has now joined and will soon be bowling for the club. If you would like to join us, why not come along on a Tuesday evening at 6pm --- it’s free of charge, no obligation, and all equipment available Call Lis Davies on 9380408 to arrange a session.

Image and Email Addresses A company’s email address, in today’s business world, is becoming the first mode of communication that prospects, clients, banks and suppliers use to contact a business or organisation. Consequently, the humble email address can create (or destroy) that ever important “first impression”. Personal email addresses which include, for example, Hotmail, Live, Gmail, Yahoo, BT internet, Virginmedia etc are perfect for a private / personal email address. Used for a business it sends out the wrong signal.

It says, Hobby, Part time, Not a business, Temporary – not attributes or labels you may want to have attached to your business – whether it be a new start or an established enterprise. If the business has a web site its best to use the domain name for emails as well. And many web hosting companies include email forwarding as part of the package. Ideally, link the domain and the emails to Office 365 or G-Suite. This is inexpensive but very important as it means your emails will be in the cloud and as a result backed up. For more information on email addresses or setting up business grade email accounts contact Techvolution.

This service is a lifeline for carers and families of brain injury survivors in the local community, just to give you an idea of how vital this service is please see below for a quote from a family they have supported: ‘How can such life changing support be so reliant on charity fundraising? I can honestly say I don’t think my family would have stayed together had we not had the support from the Carers Team. They made a promise to support us for as long as we needed, and that is just what they did. Thank you’ The day is open to all and will feature a bouncy castle, owl display, craft and food stalls, live music, a dog show and much more! Entry is free – the team at Headway Bristol hope to see you there! For further info and to enquire about booking a stall please email: fundraising@headwaybristol.org.uk www.HeadwayBristol.org.uk Registered charity number: 1007207 Headway Bristol is affiliated to Headway UK, a registered charity

Bristol Libraries Saved –but was the U-Turn by the Mayor Quick Enough? Article by Eileen Means After over a year of uncertainty when 17 Bristol Libraries were threatened with closure because of a funding gap of £1.4.million, Mayor Marvin Rees announced on 19th June that all would stay open at least until 2020. Indeed the Mayor went further, he said that funding was in place until 2022, but the next Mayoral election is 2020, so the present Mayor cannot guarantee funding unless re-elected then. Any successor may overturn it –at their peril! Campaigners were delighted – ecstatic is not too strong a word. Following the closure of Eastville library in the previous round of Council budgetary cuts, local campaigners across all political parties and in support of Redland and Westbury on Trym libraries in particular made the Mayor and the entire Labour Group of Cabinet and Councillors aware of their feelings for their community library and their determination to fight for their existence until the bitter end. As with their previous campaign under Mayor George Ferguson in 2015, they employed various means to put over their point of view, not least that votes were at stake as demonstrated in the recent Henleaze and Westbury on Trym by-election.

Labour claims that they always knew that they would never win in that ward, but they attracted far fewer votes than expected, especially following last year’s General Election result when Darren Symonds –Jones MP won the Bristol North West seat from the Conservatives’ Charlotte Leslie; this year’s result was that the Conservatives won this ward, closely followed by the Liberal Democrats leaving Labour trailing well behind.

The key cause was the threat to the local library that left the Labour candidate wrong-footed in having to campaign against the perceived decision of her own local political party. Whilst, predictably, Mayor Rees has been criticised by the other political parties, this is a ‘win-win’ situation for all; firstly Bristol as a whole – its libraries situated in communities play a pivotal role not only in developing reading skills, but also having free computer use in this digital age for people researching subjects or looking for jobs. Second, the campaigners across the city who clearly showed that, far from being out-of-date anachronisms, libraries make a vital contribution to the health of any community. And above all, our children who can still borrow books for free as they grow up and join in library activities like ‘Singalong’, being welcome from the earliest age.

Congratulations to Mayor Marvin Rees and his Cabinet team for managing the ever-depleting funding from this mean and nasty Conservative Government to find money to keep Bristol’s libraries open. Congratulations for realising how much this means to people and not being afraid to reconsider when good financial management has led to the city’s coffers beginning to recover from the mess left by the previous administration. Congratulations to the campaigners for pointing out what an essential role libraries play in our local communities. Congratulations all for appreciating how essential it is to invest in our Children’s future. Bristol won’t regret it.
