Karen Monks is set to share her Slimming World experience A Slimmer who completely turned her life around after losing 1st 12lbs is using her success to start a new career helping people charge their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams. Karen joined her local Slimming World group in Bristol just over a year ago on a doctors referral due to health problems. She has now trained as a consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Now Karen is opening her own group in Bristol at Hartcliffe Community Centre,On Tuesday 3rd April at 7.30pm. Karen says obesity is becoming a huge issue across the U.K. When she first joined Slimming World as a member, she never dreamed she would ever be in a position where she would be able to help others lose weight but now Karen can’t wait to get started. After losing her weight and completing training, she says it’s a privilege for her to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped her, so she can give her members the support they need to get to target and achieve their dreams.
6
Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat, it’s about finding a new groove to become more active which is also important too. The body magic programme takes the worry out of activity, by showing people, many of whom have some very unpleasant memories, of being forced to take apart in school activities, now they can build activity into their lives without having to go to the gym or take up running. Everything counts from walking to the shops, taking the Children to school, gardening or even washing the car. Karen loves Zumba, ballroom dancing and walking her dog to get her body magic. She says as a consultant it’s her role to create that warm, supportive atmosphere to get people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be a very exciting time and lots of great fun along the way!

It seems very much at times you don’t know whether you’re coming or going. It seems that you could be feeling literally a bit stuck in more ways than one. Try to take some time for yourself, and if you can, try and give yourself some you time. Birth month December Relationships seem to be the major influence for you this month. Particularly romances close friendships, just be aware that someone around who may need some emotional support. There may be a situation that will need you to take a good look at the situation. And then a decision maybe needed, to help someone.
What DIY plans do you have in mind over the Bank Holidays? I’m certain that the likes of the Big Orange warehouse and other Local Stores that sell screws and tools and the likes will all be buzzing for business. It’s during periods such as these that homeowners and tenants treat their homes to some fancy new items. At the top of the list for many will be fancy replacement lights, switches and the all new USB sockets that seem to be the must have item at the moment. Bank Holidays are always a great time to crack open the paint, hang some wallpaper and give the home a new appearance to say goodbye to the Winter Blues.
This Image shows the full length of a metal strip light that has a length of white cable installed. One end connects to the lighting terminal and the earth is connected. The other end is connected to the lighting circuit cable and has the earth cable cut right back to the PVC sheath, therefore this Class I item is NOT earthed as it should be which could potentially deliver a fatal shock or cause serious injury.
Why is an Earth cable so important? This cable, that does next to nothing for the majority of its life is your LIFE SAVER. It sits there just waiting for the This month I’d like to make you aware of Class I and day you need it. If a fault occurred and a live cable Class II Electrical items. What on ‘Earth’ am I talking touched the metal casing of a light switch or socket, about? then that fitting becomes live. With an earth cable installed and functioning correctly the fault is Class I fittings will have an Earth terminal and you recognised by the fuse in your fuse board and will be required to sufficiently Earth the metal blows/trips the circuit eliminating the fault and housing to protect against the risk of electric shock. making your installation and YOU safe. Now if a metal fitting becomes live and the earth cable is not present or not functioning correctly then it will remain live until it finds a path to earth. Electricity does not care what path to earth it takes and it will happily use your body to go to a solid floor or another metal object.
Sometimes though, I find metal products installed on a circuit that appear to have an earth present but testing proves that it’s not actually functioning correctly. Sometimes this can be due to a break in the cable or a loose connection at another fitting. Thankfully, Electricians carry test equipment to PROVE these situations and ensure your safety.

Electrician
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I was only at a job today doing an Electrical Installation Condition Report and it was discovered that the lighting circuit did not have an earth cable. Now, some electricians will kick up a right fuss over this but providing there aren’t any metal fixtures on the circuit and the fuse board has a label on it warning of this then it really isn’t that big a deal. On this occasion though, I found a lovely metal dimmer switch each end of the kitchen, two metal lights in the kitchen and a metal fluorescent strip light in the utility room. It was completely obvious that there was no earth in the circuit which probably meant whoever installed the items didn’t have a clue what they were working with.
Best wishes for the upcoming holidays. If you have any questions or concerns about any items that you have installed in your property then please get in touch, I’m always happy to help.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Class II means that the product is double insulated. Two separate layers of insulation protect the user against the risk of electric shock. Earthing is not required.

Homelessness in Bristol: What would you do? Two contrasting headlines this week have drawn attention to the problem of homelessness in Bristol and other cities. First, the new Housing Minister who is now responsible for solving or at the least ameliorating the problem, Heather Wheeler, said she didn’t know what is causing the rise in homelessness across the country. Enlightenment follows later, Minister, so keep reading. Second, a homeless couple have set up ‘home’ – well a base under cover – since last September outside Select Women’s fashion store in Broadmead. They have become quite famous locally. In the cold snowy weather, the staff of Select and Superdrug checked on them and refilled their hot water bottles. But Bristol City Council and Streetwise, supported by the Chief Executive of Destination Bristol who is also head of the Broadmead Business Improvement District (BID) tried to get an Injunction in the County Court to get the couple removed. He said that “they are a possible danger to the public” and that rough sleepers were having a “dramatic negative impact” on visitors and businesses.
What would you do? According to Shelter, the homelessness charity set up after ‘Cathy Come Home’ first aired in the 1960s, rough sleeping has more than doubled nationally since 2010. The evidence is all around us clearly to be seen in Bristol City Centre. Less visible is the increase in the number of homeless households in temporary accommodation that according to Shelter have increased to 79,000+ in 2016/2017, an increase of over 65%. Over ¼ of all homelessness acceptances by Local Councils are evictions from privately rented households. 1.2 million are on Council House waiting lists. The supply of genuinely affordable housing has virtually dried up; 5,380 affordable houses (government definition) were built in 2016 -2017. This shortage of supply to meet demand has been made worse by welfare benefits cuts. Taking housing supply as a whole, 4/5 will be unaffordable to people on benefits by 2020. According to estimates, Bristol alone needs 3,500 new units each year. In Bristol almost half the population live in rented homes, including 18% in socially rented – Council Housing and Housing Association – properties, 29% in private rented housing. There is your answer Housing Minister. Demand for truly affordable housing way outstrips supply. The City Council is tackling this as speedily as it can with new large developments planned at Lockleaze, Hengrove, Hartcliffe, Southmead and Ashton and smaller development sites across the city. This is praiseworthy and a lot of families and individuals will benefit. Hopefully in Bristol at least, far fewer children will be in temporary accommodation in future. But will this help determined rough sleepers like the two in Broadmead who have refused offers of assistance from homelessness support services? Ought they to be moved on using the full power of the Law? Tricky, very tricky to resove. Article By Elieen Means Chair of Bristol for Europe Chair of Bristol Bordeaux Partnership

we have just had a second bite of snowy winter weather with a blast from the beast of the east, of course Jeremy Corbyn was unsure that this weather actually did come from Russia and urged us all not to ‘rush to judgement’ until we could be fully sure this icy blast had really come from there. But does Bristol City Council have grit? It does make you wonder sometimes as we all saw the warnings for the snow and those warnings were made early. Yet the Council seemed ill prepared for the white onslaught that followed. Roads were impassable, schools and even the airport was closed; yet not much sign of the gritting lorries nor in many cases grit in the local yellow grit boxes in Bristol streets. I remember when we ran the Council our cabinet member was even out himself with a shovel and a group of hardy volunteers clearing the snow from the paths. He promised that there would grit in the boxes for local people to use if needed. After all a lot of Bristol roads were impassable due our many hills across the City and that’s why a supply of grit is so important. But not a flicker of action from ‘City Hall’ no leadership shown nor action taken by either the Mayor or his cabinet. I was told by someone who had travelled back from London by car that the least prepared of all the Council area’s on their journey was Bristol. Bristol is a City so it should be easier than the many semi- rural area’s surrounding us, yet we were cut off and saw little action from our Mayor. I am going to ask him why we were so ill prepared and hope to get more than just a chilly response from him.

www.techvolution.co.uk Do URGENT Jobs Steal Your Time? Urgent is defined as “requiring immediate action or attention”. We all get them, but do you seem to get . too many of them? The question to ask yourself is “Why has everything seemingly become urgent”? Urgent is often an overused term in business. It’s a bit like the word Accident, the definition for which is “an event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause”. Only a very small percentage of car crashes are truly “accidents”. Most of them are driver stupidity in one form or another. So, the endless list of URGENT jobs people have, normally relates to a state of general disorganisation. How do you manage your tasks? Starting with the Orange circle and ending with the Green circle, do you run around chasing tasks as they crop up like in Fig. 1, or do you plan them out and get them done in the most efficient order (Fig. 2). FIG. 1 FIG 2
If the length of the arrows represents time to sort out and complete the tasks, when properly ordered, it takes one third of the time to complete all nine tasks. Planning and organising means you get three times as much done. As a result, your list of so called “Urgent jobs” will massively

A Myth about Marketing your Business In my last two articles I explained why it is important to have a good online reputation that is visible to those searching for a business like yours and how your competitor could be legally stealing referrals that should have come your way. In this final article I’d like to advise you what to be wary of when considering a marketing agency for local online marketing. I’d also like to dispel what I think is probably the biggest myth when it comes to marketing your local business online. That myth? You need to be on the first page of Google and at the top of the rankings for the terms people use to find a business like yours. Not necessarily you don’t – but marketing agencies will still tell you that so that they can sell you relatively expensive monthly SEO services. These days people look at the Google Maps listing when they search for a local business. And for the majority, it is so that they can get a good side-by-side comparison and look for what is most important. A good reputation. Of course, it is nice to come higher up in the listings as it will give you some prominence, but in general if you are anywhere in the main display page your reputation will set you apart, or not, as the case may be.
These are one-off costs, either in terms of cash or your time, but with these fundamentals in place and a regular review collection strategy you may well find you’ve already outstripped your competition and don’t need to do anything else.
However, I know it can seem somewhat arduous or Now the criteria that Google uses when it comes to even daunting trying to get people to leave reviews. position you is a closely guarded secret. Councillors Surgery Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Labour Party These are terribly tough times for local councils. Cuts to local government funding, especially the ending of the Revenue Support Grant, mean that there is insufficient money to continue to fund all of the services that councils have traditionally provided. They have also had to cut staff, often resulting in a backlog of service provision, such as council house repairs, highway maintenance and housing benefit claims. All around the country, councils have struggled to cope. Recently even the Conservative-led Northamptonshire County Council has been taken into ‘special measures’ by the government due to financial failure, a fate Bristol City Council has worked hard to avoid. It is truly painful for Labour councillors, who believe in the fundamental importance of public services, to have to deal with the consequences of Conservative austerity cuts, as well as fighting the Tories’ long-held opposition to the welfare state and their addiction to privatisation. Look at the awful mess of our privatised rail services with their ever-soaring prices and compare them to the excellent state-run services in Northern Europe. It doesn’t have to be this way! Here in Bristol, the impacts which have particularly concerned our citizens are the threats to branch libraries and to our parks and green spaces. For example, in Brislington, residents are deeply troubled by the threat to their beloved Wick Road library, a haven for parents of young children and older people, run by the most fantastic team of staff. The library is one of only two publicly-owned community buildings in the whole of Brislington, a large ward. Brislingtonians successfully fought off an earlier threat to the library during the reign of Mayor Ferguson. Now Brislington Labour Party is again having to mount a vigorous campaign to #SaveWickRdLibrary. We will be presenting our evidence of how vital and valuable a community asset Wick Road Library is to Mayor Rees and Kerry McCarthy on March 23rd. Another problem afflicting people across the city is the rise of petty crime, drug dealing and vandalism. These problems are linked to two factors: firstly, the decline in youth services and other initiatives designed to integrate and engage young people in deprived areas and steer them away from anti-social behaviours. Secondly, it is the result of stringent cuts to the police services. No longer do we see the friendly ‘bobby on the beat’ and patrol cars are rarely spotted.
30
Local police have only enough resources to respond to emergency calls. Bristol East MP, Kerry McCarthy, has been campaigning for more funding for the police. As Brislington West Councillor, I, Harriet Bradley, along with local resident Laura Wright, have invited the Police and Crime Commissioner, Sue Mountstevens, to come and discuss these problems with residents. The meeting will be held on Monday March 26th at Wicklea Academy, Wick Road, at 7pm. Please come along and air concerns. Labour councillors will continue to respond to the issues confronting residents, trying to work collaboratively with our Conservative and Lib-Dem counterparts. But the Labour Party is the only major party wholeheartedly committed to the restoration of public services; Labour leadership has pledged this will happen if we are victorious in the next General Election.

Your garden in April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Enjoy your garden!
Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for thier spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.

Fresh Peach and Amaretto Crumble Cake
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square tin (or similar sized rectangular tin). Start by halving the peaches, removing the stones and laying them cut side up in a baking dish. Generously splosh over the Amaretto and then dot the butter and sprinkle the sugar over the peaches. Put in the oven for about 40 minutes depending on initial ripeness. They are done when a knife slides through easily. Put the peaches to one side to cool slightly and turn the oven down to 170°C.

170g butter 170g caster sugar 4 large eggs 180g plain flour 1¼ tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g almonds 70g Amaretti biscuits For the baked peaches 4 peaches 50g butter 50g light brown sugar a good slug of Amarettoe)
In the meantime, make the crumble topping and the sponge mix. For the crumble, put the Amaretti biscuits into a plastic zip-lock bag and bash them with a rolling pin until you get relatively even crumbs. Finely chop the almonds and add them to the bag, giving the mixture a shake to combine. For the sponge, cream the butter and sugar until paler in colour. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. Sift in the flour and baking powder and fold to form a smooth glossy sponge mixture. Mash or chop up three of the peach halves and fold into the sponge. Spoon half of the mixture into the tin, then scatter three-quarters of the crumble mixture over the top. Spoon the remaining sponge over the top and then carefully smooth flat. Cut the remaining peach halves into half cm slices and layer in rows on top of the sponge mixture. Scatter over the remaining crumble mixture. Put in the oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the cake is nicely browned on top and a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Fantastic served warm with a dollop of yogurt or crème fraîche as a pud, or on its own at teatime.
