COUNCILLORS SURGERY By Jos Clark, Liberal Democrat

Sandy Park Springfest success

On the 8th July we held the above event, which we hope will be the first of many and really see the Sandy Park Shopping area turn into a community hub, showcasing local food and other products, supporting our local shops, businesses and of course pub!

I do not believe that it would have been anywhere near as successful without the officers from the Neighbourhood partnership, it is sad therefore that under Mayor Marvin they are to be cut, let us hope that through the current consultation process he and his Labour Colleagues change their minds.

There was a brilliant turnout and alongside the Bristol makers fayre at St Cuthberts, there were stalls in the Council car park by the bridge. A local business trail and other events were arranged by the Sandy Park Road Improvement Neighbourhood Group (SPRING).

Currently, the Neighbourhood Partnerships are involved with the s106 money we get from developers to fund school, library and other local services, with the partnership's gone who will take responsibility for co-ordination of this money and will they look after local interests, I doubt it.

We wanted to see our shopping area develop along the lines of North Street,Bedminster and Church Road,Redfield where a combination of the Council, local people and businesses came together to help, support and drive improvement in their own neighbourhoods. For me this fulfils a number of objectives, ensure the shopping area survives and prospers, encouraging a wider choice of shops and other services locally, but as important bringing local people together to foster community involvement and people getting to know each.

So my message is to look at services locally that need your support and find new ways to help them. But also take part in the budget consultation and ask the Mayor to think again about cutting our libraries, lollipop patrols and of course the Neighbourhood partnerships.

On all of these this first event was a success and I look forward to us building on it to see the area consolidate and grow.

THE WORD ON THE STREET It’s the little things that mean a lot By Eileen Means Ok so Bristol City Council is in a financial mess a) because this nasty Tory Government has cut the funding year on year, starting with the Coalition Government joined by their minions the Liberal Democrats b) due to the extra burdens left by the previous Mayor George Ferguson and c) the incompetence, some would say wilful dishonesty to Councillors and Auditors by some Senior Officers who definitely did know better. Lots and lots of savings to be made. We get that, the public of Bristol; After all, whatever the reason, wherever the blame lies, we are the ones who are paying up via our Council Tax and other ‘taxes’ like Parking fees and Penalty Charge Notices (I seem to get caught out for a LOT of these). But in the recent round of ‘Consultation proposals’ the focus seems to be on removing or cutting services that, in the grand scheme of things cost a pittance but make a major difference.

One such service are the ‘lollipop’ men and women. We all remember them from our own school days, even if we may not be currently involved with primary education for our children or grandchildren. The proposal is for those who work where there is an automatic crossing to be deleted/made redundant told “you are not wanted” WHEN THE REVERSE IS TRUE if parents/grandparents/ teachers and the children themselves are asked about it. My eldest daughter went to Hillcrest School (as it was called then) just off the main A37 Wells Road between Totterdown and Knowle. It is one of the busiest roads in Bristol with lots of huge lorries, buses, delivery vans –every type of road worthy vehicle – and probably quite a few not roadworthy! It is terrifying for young children and every parent warns them to take great care. Yet, for say, 4-8 year olds, we all know that despite warnings, young children run into roads: they see a friend, see a cat or bird, or simply forget and they are off. The extra protection offered by the ‘Lollipop’ person is vital. And they cost a pittance in terms of council finances, being largely retired people, working few hours for low pay. The Council won’t go bust employing ‘Lollipop” men and women. So please Mr Mayor and Council; keep them and keep our little ones safe on our busy roads.

Recipes for a slimmer summer With its warmer weather, longer and lighter nights and hot holidays, there are lots of things to love about summer. Slimming World is set to make the season even better by helping slimmers to keep their weight losses on track and enjoy their slimmest summer ever. Slimming World’s Little Book of Summer is loaded with recipes that are all specially designed for both warmer weather and wonderful weight losses. Whether readers are planning a brilliant barbecue, packing the perfect picnic or looking for low-fat desserts, they’ll find the inspiration they need to enjoy every occasion and still slim in this new collection. Sarah Bryant, who runs Slimming World groups in Hengrove and Whitchurch, says: "As the weather gets warmer, we can’t hide behind our layers and baggy clothes so we want to look and feel our best. However, the summer months can be a difficult time for slimmer's because our normal routines are usually disrupted with holidays, the kids are off school and we’re busy enjoying days out, meaning it can feel harder than usual to eat healthily and fit in activity. "This book is a real life-saver, though. It’s full of delicious recipes to help slimmer's stay on track whatever they’ve got planned and show people that they don’t need to miss out on any summer fun.

Slimming World isn’t about going ‘on a diet’, it’s about discovering a new way of eating that means you can still have the foods you love and live your life. People often think that losing weight means sticking to a strict rigid plan and going without. Our plan fits in around you, rather than you having to fit your life around the plan, and unlike other weight-loss plans the focus is on all the fabulous foods you can enjoy – including BBQ and picnic favourites – instead of what you can’t have." The recipes in Slimming World’s Little Book of Summer are based on Slimming World’s Food Optimising plan, which allows slimmers to satisfy their appetite on every day foods like fruit and veg, meat, chicken, fish, pasta, rice and potatoes so there’s no need to go hungry while losing weight. The collection includes more than 60 recipes including mouth-watering meals, light bites, ice-cold desserts and drinks, plus fresh ideas for sizzling barbecues and pretty picnics. So whether readers are tucking into Surf and Turf Skewers with fresh ketchup, Rustic potato salad or Cherry cheesecake in a jar (or all three!), they’re guaranteed their tastiest – and trimmest – summer ever. The recipes are all easy enough to suit all cooking abilities and each one is accompanied by a photo of the finished article to tempt the taste buds and help inspire novice cooks. For more delicious recipes and to find out more about how you can lose weight and eat delicious food with Slimming World, visit www.slimmingworld.com or join the a local Slimming World group, which is held daily. Simple Tricks To Keep You Motivated To Exercise

Set yourself some clear goals for your training. These goals should be set using the SMART principle. This means they should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and have a Time frame. An example could be I want to lose 2lbs a week.

Do the types of exercise you enjoy If exercise is more enjoyable it's more likely that you will do it. So try to find out which types of exercise you enjoy doing and which you least enjoy. For example if you love going to classes go to more classes. If you hate cardio do less of it.

Reward yourself Today I want to share with you a few simple tricks that have helped myself and my clients stay motivated to exercise.

Make working out part of your routine

The first trick to keep you motivated is to make working out part of your routine. Schedule your workouts in your calendar as an appointment.

Get an accountability buddy

When you set goals put in place a reward you get for achieving that goal. This provides you with something to work towards, and gives you extra motivation to achieve your goal. For example it could be a holiday or it could be something as simple as a meal at your fave restaurant. Turn exercising into a competition, we all have a competitive streak in us we love the feeling of winning something. A way you could make exercise competitive is to do some kind of gym challenge with your friends. For example a plank off, see who can hold a plank for the longest.

Track of success rate

Get a friend, family member, work colleague etc who has similar goals to you and train together. Training together helps massively with motivation as you can hold each other accountable to your goals & give each other that extra push when you are struggling.

Keep a record of how often you actually workout. I recommend an app called habit bull for doing this. This app allows you set yourself habits for example going to the gym 4 times a week, you then have to tick off on a calendar when you do this habit. It also reminds you do this habit. Martin Warrillow has an inspirational story to tell The human brain can only be worked so hard. When it's had enough, it goes haywire.

I moved into freelance journalism and quickly got an annual contract editing the quarterly magazine of British Naturism. My wife and I had been naturists since 1991 so it seemed the perfect job. I enjoyed it for three-and-a-half years. But office politics came to the fore in the autumn of 2013 and I decided not to apply for another contract. Before I could leave, the organisation decided not to renew my deal – and I was told in a two-minute phone call.

Despite being born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus, I spent 23 years working on newspapers in the West Midlands, with most of them on the sports desk of a morning newspaper. I loved it, but we worked ridiculous hours, starting at 3pm and finishing between midnight and 1am. With my wife waking at 6am to commute to work, I wasn't getting a lot of 'proper' sleep. I was also eating 'on the run”. It was a recipe for disaster and in 2006-7, I started to suffer epileptic fits. It took the doctors 18 months to work out what was happening. Finally, my employer paid for a private consultation with a professor of neurology. I will never forget the day I sat in that consultant’s office and he said: "You don't know how close you've come to killing yourself. Your eating and sleeping patterns are wrecked; your body clock's shot to bits."

That took away 90 per cent of my income and over the next two weeks, I panicked. I took my brain and body to their limits and beyond. Then, while I was crossing a road on Monday December 16 2013, I collapsed without warning. I lay helpless with a bus coming towards me. I'd had a stroke. At the age of 49, my body and brain had cried 'Enough!' The stroke could have killed me. The bus should have killed me. But somehow the bus missed me and I survived the stroke. I spent a month in hospital, I was in a wheelchair for four months and on sticks for 18 months. I have memory loss and balance issues. But I'm alive.

The company quickly took me off those shifts and things calmed down. I haven't had a fit since February 2010. But at the end of 2009, my job was made redundant.

I've been retired since December 2015 because of the brain damage but I blog at www.askthewarrior.com and I do talks about stroke education as ‘The Warrior’ –emphasising the need for people to take care of their brains and bodies. I also point out that people should prepare financially for the life-changing event "which will never happen to me." Well, I'm proof that it can - if you work your brain and body too hard. If I can help one person to avoid what I've been through, I see that as creating a massive positive out of a massive negative.

Mobile Phones in Business How often do you hear “What did we do before mobile phones?” And of course, the smart phones of today are massively powerful computers, communication devices, cameras, entertainment centres and business tools. Productivity has risen year on year principally because people can work on the move. Be that taking and receiving calls, replying to emails, or continuing drafting notes and documents held in the cloud. One thing that has not changed, however, is the perception of the mobile phone number. In the UK all mobile phone numbers from the major networks start 07. So, if the only number used by a sole trader or other business is 07…. Several hidden messages – none of them helpful are conveyed: 1. Mobile – mobile means NOT permanent or moving around or no fixed abode. To many this implies flighty or here today gone tomorrow

3. Just started – so far you haven’t organised your phone number because you’re a new start. Many people are nervous giving business to recently established businesses. Will they survive? Are they insured? Will their guarantee mean anything? Will they be around to fix it if there is a problem? By not having a landline phone number on your business card, van wrap, or sales literature you are already disadvantaging yourself against your competitors. For as little as £5* per month this problem can be overcome. It maybe you don’t think it is important. It maybe you think to have a landline number is expensive. It maybe it’s never occurred to you. Techvolution offer very straight talking business advice to new start businesses and can organise a suitable landline number and sort out that part of your business image and communication requirements. Note: Prices exclude VAT

2. Small – only small companies or “little businesses” don’t have a proper landline number. Do you want to be seen as a “little” business – it doesn’t inspire confidence

Were you aware.. That anybody can call themselves an accountant?!! The words Dr and Lawyer are protected terms. Meaning that you actually had to pass the training to be deemed a "Dr or a Lawyer"

Not so for accountants. Anyone can call themselves an accountant! I have completed 7 years of studying, 4 years of training and I have over 20 years experience, so always check your accountants credentials. There are four chartered bodies in the UK for accountants, ask if your accountant is qualified with one of them.

And of course, if you want a reliable accountant who is a member of one of these bodies, give us a call Bristol 01179235394 Email enquiries@tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk

From ass-kicking femme fatales, roguish drug smugglers, to badass gunslingers, there’s plenty of heroes to see this month at your local Cineworld.

Set within the otherworldly dimension of Mid-World where Idris Elba’s gunslinger acts as the last of his kind tasked to defend the titular tower, he’ll need all the help he can get if he’s to take down the man in black.

First up kicking us off in a big way on the 9th of August is Atomic Blonde, the super stylish tale of espionage and action, which sees Charlize Theron’s Lorraine attempt to singlehandedly end the cold war the only way she knows how – breaking bones. Directed by one half of the duo that gave us John Wick, expect amazing fight choreography, a killer soundtrack, and stunning visuals.

Fast forward to 18th August where we stick with the action, but swap thriller for fantasy as we plunge into the depths of the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved Dark Tower book series.

Bringing August to a close is Tom Cruise’s second major release this Summer American Made, the true story of TWA pilot Barry Seal, who enjoys more trouble than he bargained for when working for both the CIA and drug cartel simultaneously.

With so many stars returning to the big screen this August, can you afford not to strap into your cinema seat?

Keep the kids active outdoors this summer These days residential swing sets come with all the fixings. They have tube slides, wave slides, fireman poles, rock climbing walls, and rope ladders. Some even include trapeze bars, where your kids can pretend to be acrobats. There are also telescopes, periscopes, steering wheels, and Tic-Tac-Toe panels that you can get on your unit. Some units also have forts that little ones can hide out in and picnic tables underneath to play games on. Whether you invest in wooden swing sets or metal swing sets, your children will love playing on their own jungle gym in their back yard. It is a great way for them to stay active and use up all their extra energy this summer. It’s also a great investment, as they will be able to use it for many years to come. Some are even maintenance-free! Sand boxes are another great activity your children will love playing with this summer. They can pretend they are at the beach or the lake and make castles. Little ones can use their pails and shovels to create the perfect one. They can also bury sea shells and toys, and then have fun digging them up. Toddlers can play with their toy dump trucks in it, pretending to be construction workers.

Sand boxes are fun for all and allow children to use their imagination. Sand boxes these days come in all shapes and sizes, including hexagons, squares, and boat shapes. Some even have tents over them to protect your little ones from the sun’s rays as they play. See Saws are another great summer toy that your children will love playing on. This is especially great if you have more than one child in the family, as see saws take two people to operate. Your children will love taking turns going up and down on the wonderful toy. Some see saws even rotate, so your children will gently spin as they rise up and come down. See saws come in a variety of materials these days, including steel tubing and wood. They are designed for comfort and for safety. Most are recommended for those 3 and up, since they have to have enough leg strength to power the unit. If your child tires of playing outside, there are some great indoor activities they can take part in including coloring, drawing, reading books , or rolling out their sleeping bags in the living room and watching a movie. Whatever activity they choose they will be sure to have a blast this summer.
