The number of LPAs granted has tripled – do you understand the benefits of having an LPA? The number of LPAs granted has tripled – do you understand the benefits of having an LPA?The number of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPAs) granted annually has tripled between 2010 and 2015. The increase in the number of LPAs being granted may be due to a drive to increase public awareness and to encourage people to plan for the future. The LPA is a legal document that appoints someone you trust to help you make your own decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. Typically, this would be a member of your immediate family, a loved one or a legal professional. Having an LPA in place means you can entrust your decision making to someone close to you, in the event that you are no longer able to make those decisions for yourself. With some experts reporting that as much as 60% of the UK population does not have a Will, it is important that people understand the benefits of planning ahead, regardless of our age or health.

If you begin to lose your mental or physical capacity and you’re no longer capable of making your own decision, the Lasting Power of Attorney ensures that your affairs are looked after by someone you trust. Your garden in January The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and boarders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and re-shaped. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scarce for them over the winter.

Plant of the Month Helleborus

The essential gardening jobs for January Protect plants January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors. Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become waterlogged.Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap.

Dig over bare ground Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up.

Feed the birds Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.

Enjoy your garden! 8

Why should you plant them? Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.

The top 3 movies For January The Christmas period might be over, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still any gifts to be had when paying a visiting to your local cinema. Whether it’s by checking out Aardman’s prehistoric animated offering in Early Man, taking a trip to the vibrant Mexican underworld in Pixar’s Coco, or witnessing the finale to Thomas’ dystopian adventure in The Death Cure – don’t miss out on these New Year niceties! First up to the plate on January 19th is Pixar’s highly-anticipated next project: Coco. Centring around the colourful Day of the Dead Mexican holiday, the story charts young Miguel’s journey to the underworld and his mission to find his way back to the land of the living. Only by finding his great-great-grandfather does he stand a chance of doing so, with maybe the odd song or two thrown in along the way. One week later, on January 26th, audiences can look forward to a bumper crop of unmissable cinema experiences in the form of Early Man and Maze Runner: The Death Cure. The first of which promises to be a fun-filled comedic romp, with caveman Dug and his tribe forced to go head to head with the brash brutes of the Bronze Age. The Death Cure, meanwhile, is set to bring James Dashner’s Maze Runner film adaptation trilogy full circle, as Thomas and friends face their hardest challenge yet. You can nab two free tickets to see any of the films mentioned by completing the puzzle on the next page. But regardless, there’s plenty of reasons to be excited about visiting the cinema this January. Aaron Potter is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to veiw each month at your loal cinema.

De-clutter for 2018

So you have survived Christmas and are now thinking: ‘ Where am I going to put all this stuff?” it happens every year (and throughout). We find ourselves submerged in gifts, and whilst it is lovely to receive them, there is only so much space in the house! You have two choices I guess, buy a bigger house or maybe it’s time to de-clutter! Mike at Direct Local explains. I find it hard to work when there is a lot of clutter around me. I resort to having a good clear up before I can channel my mind and get things achieved. At the same time, it is not always as easy as it sounds as we all get attached to our belongings. With this in mind, I thought I would try to help those of you who would like it. Once you have cleared the clutter, what you have remaining are the essential elements, which tend to be more beautiful and more elegant. 1.Make a list As with many tasks, it is usually easier to start with a plan. Write down all the rooms that you would like to work on and then start one area at a time. 2.What doesn’t have a function? This does take a certain amount of honesty, and is sometimes easier to do with someone else’s possessions, but, if you are doing this on your own, a little ruthlessness is called for. We all have sentimentality towards certain items, and hold onto others ‘just in case’. 3.De-clutter your wardrobe Anything that attains a hole is binned immediately. Effectively, as we get older our size and style changes as our skin and hair colour and some things just don’t work anymore. Whites don’t always stay as white as they once were, and neither does black. Whilst it is lovely to have summer beach clothes – how many do we need? Likewise, a pair of shoes that have never been worn because we don’t have the rest of the outfit to go

with them possibly could find a better home. A great way to do this is to turn all your hangers the wrong way, have a look in six months time which items haven’t been worn – the likelihood is that they will still be unworn six months later. 4.Dvds, Cds, Vhs, Cassettes In this digital age, so many of the above are now just not used and they can take up vast amounts of space – how often do you use them? I have found that I now upload all of my Cds to my Mac and play them through my TV, on my phone, in the car, on my ipad etc. as such, I bundled up all of my Dvds as Christmas gifts. The same unfortunately goes books. 5.Take a photo Sometimes, all we need is a reminder of something that we no longer need and, as such, a photograph of that chipped vase with some lovely flowers is all we require to allow ourselves to part with something we can no longer house. 6.The kitchen Now there is a special room, which always seem to harbour every gadget, dish and mug that we would possibly house. If you have a dishwasher, I would imagine that even you are surprised by the number of mugs you now have. I shall tell you, that if you have less mugs, it is amazing how much quicker it is to empty the dishwasher. Have you held onto the roasting tins that come with the last cooker you owned?

7.Retain, Recycle, Remove As you start to approach this mammoth task, you could try to separate into three criteria. Items you want to retain: items you could sell on eBay or donate to charity: and items that need disposing of in the bin. You may be surprised how much money you could raise by selling a few items that you really don’t want. This goes for clothing, as well as Cds, Dvds, furniture and even jewellery. You may even be able to have a holiday if you have really good clear out! And you can even get someone to do the hard work for you. For a fee. 8.Five Item Rule If the above seems daunting, how about looking at it in a far gentler way. Say, every time you clean or tidy the house, you select just five items that you no longer need and set them aside in a box or bag, or the boot of your car ready for you to drop off when your next passing a charity shop? Over a period of time, you would be surprised by the space that you reclaim. It may seem daunting; but having a clear-out can benefit not just your home, but also your mind. Psychologists have found that women with cluttered homes have higher levels of cortisol – the stress hormone associated with chronic fatigue, post traumatic stress disorder, and higher risk of mortality. A recent study also showed that physical clutter affects people’s ability to focus, process information, and be productive – so jilting the junk could be just the energy boost you need. What are you waiting for?

The Annual Presentation Evening and Dinner is always a highlight of the clubs year. Long after the final woods have come to rest on the green and the trophies won there is the chance to come together and celebrate all that has been achieved in competitions played through the season now past. Forty nine bowlers and families arrived at Shirehampton Park Golf Club on Friday December 1st to enjoy a wonderful three course meal and to see trophies and medals presented to winners and runners--up ---- some being first time winners, others more accustomed to receiving and taking home that trophy so hard earned on finals day. Most of the trophies were presented by President David Hinksman and Chairperson Lis Davies but two were a little different. The Bill Deakin ---- presented by Jenny Povey , t to Julie Looker---- in memory of her father, who was Club President from 1991-1992. The Sid Holmes Handicap --- presented by Lorraine Holmes, to Ken Davies, in memory of her late husband ----- a long standing bowler at the club.

18

Ray Cook won the Ladies Two Wood, Gill Hinksman and Bill Cook the Mixed Pairs, Ken Davies and Phil Cormack the Two Wood Pairs and the Jack Ashton Triples was won by Dee Crawley, Julie Looker and Mervyn May. The Monday Evening League was won by The Marvels and the Club Cup by A.N.Other. Winners of The Wooden Spoon ---- nobody wants this one ---- were, The Lads. The event was organised by Gill Hinksman with help from Dee Crawley and Lis Davies and it was, once again, a very enjoyable occasion. The first of this Winters Sunday Social Evenings took place on December 10th and featured skittles, table skittles and indoor putting. Social Evenings are for fun and they do keep bowlers together in the dark days of winter. There was fun --- and prizes ---- Trevor Scanlon came out on top on the alley, Chris Silverthorne ---- how did she do it ---- on the Table Skittles and Bill Cook on the Putting --- almost up to Tiger Woods Standard. The next social event will be on Sunday January 7th ---- a Beetle Drive in the Skittle Alley commencing at 7.30pm --- always guaranteed to raise a laugh and frustration levels in equal measure, but most of all --- great fun.

The next indoor game will be on Saturday January 20th against Begbrook Green. The following week-end will see over 30 bowlers and supporters travel to Torquay for the annual Winter Bowls Break at the Toorak Hotel. This is five days of not only bowling but also use of the hotels extensive facilities and the chance to explore Torquay and the surrounding area. The City and Port of Bristol Bowling Club has much to offer ---- as much or as little bowling as you like from April until late September. Lots of mixed ( ladies and gents) friendly games-- the ladies have a few of their own. For those who enjoy competitive bowling the Ladies and Gents play in the Bristol and District Leagues and enter County Competitions. There is a Monday Evening League --- teams of four competing against each other and a Cup knock out competition as well. Club Competitions run from May/ June and culminate in grand finals days in September. What else --- well --- the club has a large Car Park and use of a well equipt Social Club. If you would like to give bowling a try ---- please let us know. All equipment supplied, experienced bowlers on hand for help and advice and ------ it’s free of charge ---- up to three sessions for nothing. For further information please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

The service will respond to passenger usage and adjust its route over time, to provide the best service possible to those who use it and to be efficient. Innovative features include real-time integration with trains at Avonmouth Station. For the first time on a bus service, the driver knows if the train is late. He can wait in the case of minor delays (so those arriving by train don’t miss their connection) or go when delays are more severe (so those already on the bus can continue with their journey).

This employer-led service is designed to meet the needs of local businesses, to improve recruitment and retention of colleagues to sites that are difficult to reach for those without a car.

Through their travel account, passengers have access to a personalised timetable, including real-time travel updates from connecting trains. Avonmouth and Severnside is an Economic Enterprise Area but growth is threatened by the area’s difficulty to attract people to jobs. The number of people passing their driving test having fallen 20% in the last 10 years, in part because of the cost (learning to drive and insurance). Businesses can no longer rely on the assumption that people can drive to get to work. This service enables businesses to widen their choice of candidates to those who want to work in the area but wouldn’t otherwise be able to get to these jobs. The service is the result of a collaboration with SevernNet, the local sustainable business network.

What is a cavity wall? Cavity Wall construction was Introduced in the 1900’s, initially in coastal areas because of high exposure to wind driven rain. Buildings were constructed with 2 “leafs” with a gap, the cavity, and held together with “Wall Ties”. Moisture penetrating the outer wall would evaporate and run down this outer ‘leaf’, keeping the inner wall dry. Cavity Wall Insulation (CWI) was promoted, in the 1970’s, as the solution to our energy saving conscience, and was seen as a way to improve our energy efficiency. Government backed schemes, followed, which provided CWI to properties, to meet International emissions targets. Property owners were offered CWI at minimal or no cost, and there was an unprecedented push to insulate as many properties as possible. This led to a large number of installers joining the market, and sales to the consumer increased one hundredfold, hindered only by poorly trained sales staff. This push was on the back of poor regulation of the installers, poor surveying standards, poor installation practices, and inadequate guarantees.. Homeowners and tenants alike have suffered as a result. Post war, there was an immediate need to build a lot of houses. Companies such as Laing, Wimpey built homes quickly and efficiently using new methods of fabrication on-site. Concrete was used, rather than brick on brick, so became known as System Built. There are around one million non-traditional, System Built homes in the U.K. that used this method of construction. Cavities, present in most ‘system built’ homes were not suitable for standard insulation materials like ‘bead’ and ‘mineral fibre’, and should not have been done. All CWI materials, badly installed or in the wrong type of property can lead to damp problems. Blown fibre and mineral wool, by the nature of its construction are able to absorb and retain moisture affecting the internal wall of the property, and causing problems, such as crumbling plaster, wallpaper lifting and furnishings damage.

If you have got it, you’ll know it. Estimated that 3 million homes in the UK will suffer damage due to insulation being installed incorrectly, and in many cases should not have been done at all. There are some obvious signs of damage, caused by damp, not the least being damp patches on interior walls, wallpaper lifting or crumbling plaster. Not so obvious are the early signs of rising damp, not helped by the CWI retaining moisture making the interior walls damp. Also, the signs of penetrating damp, where the CWI acts as a wick across the cavity. Condensation, usually seen as a black mould growth, should not be confused with “damp damage”, insufficient ventilation often the cause. Air vents blocked by sealant, during the process of installation, can lead to damage to floor timbers, due to lack of ventilation. Seeking help from a reputable company will involve no expense on your part, and the free inspection will reveal if you qualify for a compensation claim. The process is straightforward and is on a No Win No Fee basis. Remember, damp can cause long term problems, and will reduce the value of your property, and the chance to sell it, in the future. It has been said that we are becoming a “compensation” culture, society, but in this case, the fabric of our homes has been affected, and damage experienced.

Cavity Wall Insulation Problems? YOU could be entitled to compensation of between...

£10,000 to £25,000 Do you live in a System Built House? It’s estimated that 3 million homes in the UK will suffer damage due to insulation being fitted incorrectly, and in many circumstances shouldn’t have been fitted at all. If you live in this type of concrete / timber construction (pictured) and have had Cavity Wall Insulation in the last 14 years, YOU ARE ELIGIBLE Cavity Wall Insulation should not have been installed. In more traditionally built properties Cavity Wall Insulation may be causing long-term problems because of poor installation. Don’t let your home suffer, not dealing with these issues, call us today!
