Your garden in November
The garden begins to wind down in November as deciduous plants enter dormancy. Leaves are falling rapidly and wind and rain are on the increase. Whilst most of nature is hibernating in the colder months. November is a ideal month to get new trees in the ground. Trees are best planted in the late autumn when the soil is still warm but not too dry, giving roots time to acclimatise before the harsher temperatures of winter arrive. Whatever you plan to do outside in November, take time to enjoy the garden as it fades leaving structural plants and evergreens to take centre stage. Plant of the month: Trees Why should you plant them? Trees add structure to gardens and landscapes. As well as being used as a focal point of the garden they also make good hedges and screens. They come in huge number and varieties shapes and sizes and there is one to suit every taste and position
3 essential gardening jobs for November
Lift and store corms and tubers Lift and store plants such as dahlias and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by bad weather. Store in a dry frost free dark place ideally in a layer of sawdust. Check occasionally over winter to ensure they are dry and rot free. Remove any that look suspicious to prevent the risk of infection. Tie in Tall plants and secure structures
Protect tender plants The weather is turning so its time to get those plants protectedfrosts can do serious damage to tender plants. Frost tender plants in pots should be moved to the green house conservatory or porch. Exotic plants such as palms and tree ferns should be wrapped up in the winter with frost protection material
8
An important winter job is to stake tall plants, climbers and small trees to protect against strong winds. Check the existing ties are not cutting in to the stems of plants that have grown over summer. Structures such as arches, pergolas and fences should also be checked and ideally treated with a preservative If repaired now there is less potential for damage in high winds.
Enjoy your garden!
While most trees are grown for their foliage and flower, some are praised for thier bark and branch shapes. Some trees look fantastic in spring while in full flower and others burst in to vibrant colour in the autumn. How should you plant them? Young trees should be staked diagonally. This protects them from strong winds and ensures the roots do not get damaged. Most varieties of tree will have specific planting instuctions. There is a tree that will thrive in all soil types from wet soil to poor dry land and everything in between. The best advice is to check the plant label or look it up on an online plant directory.

Growing support for Community gardening Want to keep active? Like meeting new people? Love colorful flowers? Want to grow your own food? We’re looking for new members to join our weekly gardening groups in Lawrence Weston and Southmead. Everyone is welcome - no gardening expertise is required and we don’t check to see if you have green fingers before you start!
We meet all year round, but don’t worry – in colder, wet weather we will do things indoors! We have a series of winter activities including ‘green’ crafts and houseplant care. You don’t have to come every week, or stay for the whole session - just drop in when you are able. In December we will be getting festive and making Christmas decorations and wreaths from natural materials gathered from the garden. Lawrence Weston - Wednesdays 1.30-3.30pm Five Ways Bungalow, 2 Ridingleaze, Lawrence Weston, BS11 0QF Special Christmas session on 20th December Southmead - Thursdays 1.30-3.30pm The Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, Southmead, BS10 5PY Special Christmas sessions on 7th December (decorations) and 21st December (wreaths) Amy Stone runs both groups. She works for Growing Support, a local organisation specialising in social and therapeutic gardening groups, and facilitates each session. Please get in touch with Amy on 07410379704 or amys@growingsupport.co.uk if you would like to come along. Bristol City Council funds our work in Lawrence Weston. Southmead Development Trust helps organise the group and co-ordinate activities at The Greenway Centre, which are funded by #Fourteen.
All of our sessions are completely free. We all work together so don’t worry if you can’t always bend as well as you used to or don’t fancy wrestling with tough weeds, there is a job for everyone and we’re grateful for everybody’s help. It’s increasingly recognised that gardening or being outdoors enjoying the garden makes us feel better and is a great opportunity to get some exercise. However, it can be difficult to get started in a large communal space, especially if you don’t know much about gardening. The aim of the community gardening groups is to bring everyone together to improve the green spaces on their doorstep. Members are given the opportunity to learn new skills and meet new people. The gardening groups do all sorts of jobs such as growing vegetables, keeping gardens tidy by weeding or raking up leaves, planting bulbs to bring some much needed colour in the spring or making bird feeders to attract wildlife. Members can decide what they want to grow and how we will work together to improve the gardens.

A Twist on a Classic Pudding
Bread and butter pudding with raspberries and white chocolate
Serves 4 Prepare less than 15 mins (plus up to 30 mins soaking time) Cook 30 mins
Ingredients •1 Brioche loaf •250g unsalted butter •5 egg yolks •100g golden caster sugar •Half vanilla pod •150ml milk •150ml double cream •100g fresh raspberries •100g white chocolate
The Method 1.Slice the loaf, butter it and cut into triangles. 2.Put milk, cream, and vanilla seeds in a pan on a low heat (do not boil). Meanwhile whisk yolks with sugar together in a large bowl. When eggs are pail and creamy, gradually whisk in hot milk/cream until combined. 3.Butter a ceramic dish and arrange a layer of bread and butter. Top this layer with raspberries and white chocolate, then add another layer of bread and butter, followed by fruit and chocolate. Continue until all used up. 4.Pour over the custard to the top and allow to soak for 30 minutes covered. 5.Uncover and top up again if necessary. 6.To cook, place dish in a baking tray and ¾ fill with water and bake at 130°C for 30 minutes. Finish by removing from oven, sprinkling with caster sugar and grilling until golden.
The Twist This is an old favourite when made with sultanas and white bread. But you can really let your imagination run away. How about banana and toffee? Or marmalade and dark choclate.

The final month of the 2017 season was every bit as enjoyable as the five months that preceded it, and did provide some memorable moments. The visit to Wotton-Under-Edge ---- it only happens every other season isalways well worth the trip. The view on one side of the green is of a very high wooded hill ---- does anyone ever reach the top? The bowling was also very good and enjoyable. In the opposite direction the visit to Yatton was also very pleasant. Good company and great hospitality. The very last game of the season was at home to GB Britton on Sunday October 1st.
An excellent barbeque was prepared and presented by Brian Crawley --- with a little help from Dee and friends! A big thank you to Nisbets for not only supporting the event but also taking part. Thanks also to Warburtons who once again supplied rolls for the barbeque. Amongst those watching the event was John Brailey, a Past President and Ken McCullock one of the clubs longest serving bowlers who celebrated his 90thbirthday in August this year. The season may have ended but there is still plenty to look forward to. Plans and preparation for season 2018 are already well in hand.
This was made memorable by the musical accompaniment and a sail past by The Matthew. The music came from the club ballroom where a big band was playing a mixture of modern jazz and traditional big band music. What a way to end a season!! The previous day was Presidents Day when just over thirty bowlers and supporters came along to join President David Hinksman for an afternoon of bowling, fun and food. Four first time bowlers from Nisbets ---- resplendent in their red Nisbet shirts --- came to join in the fun. Stacey, Gary, Tony and Sue plus Jim and Janice who just came to join in were given expert instruction by Top Bowler Ken Davies, Phil Cormack, Bill Cook and others before joining everyone else for the traditional spider --- not a real one----to launch the afternoon. Each bowler, one foot in the ditch and one on the green bowls one wood at the jack which is positioned centrally on the green. Closest wood to the jack wins. It is utterly chaotic --- woods coming from all four sides and converging somewhere in the middle. When all the woods had come to rest it was for The President to declare the winner and, once again --- yes he did it before --- the winner was David Garrod who duly received the whiskey. A game of eight end duration followed ---- teams of four were selected randomly by the President and then paired to play against each other on three rinks with prizes for the team with the highest number of shots. It was all great fun --- some very new bowlers playing alongside seasoned ones and doing well. Hopefully, they will want to come and try again next season. The winning team with lucky thirteen shots was ---- Ray Cook, David Garrod, Marion Brailey and Mervyn May --- all winning a bottle of wine. No event is complete without food and this one was no exception.

The first indoor bowls match of the close season will be on Saturday November 4th against the indoor club team, at the City and County Indoor Arena. Friday December 1st is the date of the Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening at the Shirehampton Park Golf Club. The Winter Bowling Break will once again be at the TLH in Torquay at the end of January. Bowling at the hotels indoor arena and enjoying all that TLHand the surrounding area has to offer. The greenkeeper has already been busy, working on the green so that it will be in good shape to the new season which starts in April 2018. The first, and eagerly awaited game of the 2018 season will once again beon the all-weather green at Wrington, on Wednesday April 11th.For information about how to join or general information about the club please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713

Three Proves To Be The Magic Number
Goodman & Lilley, the award winning sales, lettings and land agents have this week launched their third office, to a rapturous welcome in Shirehampton. With successful offices currently based in Portishead and Henleaze, Directors Richard and Guy began to notice strong traffic within the property market between both locations. Speaking at the launch, they mentioned ‘Really it was after the Henleaze office launch nearly 4 years ago, that we really started to notice the correlation. We’ve successfully held the number one Agency position in Portishead for the last 7 years and we’re making strong waves within the BS9 and BS10 market. It really made a lot of sense to find this office between the two’. A highlight to this launch is the story of their Branch Manager, Jake Goodliffe, who having been taken on as an apprentice in their early days, has risen through the ranks to now undertake this role. Along the way Jake has covered both the North Somerset and Bristol market with great success, determination and passion towards his role. Guy Lilley stated, ‘Jake came to us when he was fresh out of School.
22
His focus and belief in not only himself, his abilities and also the company is what brought him to where he is today – everything Jake does, he does with care and compassion. It really was a very easy decision to ask him to take the Shirehampton office forward for us – we have great belief in him and his abilities’. Goodman & Lilley have come along way since their launch only a mere 9 years ago. Based around Guy’s kitchen table, the company soon found their feet in Portishead. As success grew, so did the professional sales and lettings teams. Now a team of 20 and with a national award to their name, the company is waiting to hear of their possible success at this year’s Negotiator Awards after landing three nominations in this years shortlist. Held in London at the end of the month, they’ll be waiting to see if they can retain their Best Agency South West title and take the glory home as Community Champions and Best Small Agency. To arrange your free, no obligation market appraisal, please contact the team on 0117 2130333.

Planning for Christmas – you and your Business Christmas comes once a year, at the same time, but we still all get caught out with the organisation of it!
We specialise in answering the phones for people!
We know through working for many businesses over the Christmas period that they have had in the past one more of these dilemmas. One client admitted that before they used the Telephone Answering Service, she could not take holidays abroad – so she went without for 4 years. She now goes away every year without fail.
Decide upfront how you want to handle the Christmas period: Do you need to stay open – if so how many staff Is it your busiest time and you feel you want to increase your staffing availability Is it that sort of time you want to take a break and effectively shut the business for a couple of weeks Do you need to have some sort of presence on the National holiday days – Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day Are people looking for responses during the night or weekends – would it make your business look good to be available night and weekends
24
Outsourcing certain activities is so easy with the march of technology. You may like to rethink how you handle Christmas and other periods. If you need help or would like to talk over your needs and most importantly what you want to get out the business during the holiday season contact Miles Kitching – miles.kitching@techvolution.co.uk and we can meet for a coffee.
