A Whole New Field Kris de Scossa, a sports coach who has transformed teams all over the world with his ability to motivate and inspire has returned home to Bristol and is ready to now help slimmers in his local area, having lost 2st 6lb in just 11 weeks to achieve his own personal target with slimming world . Kris says ‘in my professional life I always came across as confident and highly motivated, but I knew that wasn’t how I felt in my personal life, it was just a show. I’d got to the stage where I didn’t recognise my own reflection, my body language had changed, my smile had faded - I’d lost who I was. I didn’t think anyone else had noticed though, until the day my sister told me she missed the old Kris‘ Kris took his sister up on the offer of going along to her Slimming World group with him, she helped him see that he was allowed to give himself the same time he gave his work. Kris says ‘ I remember saying to my sister on a previous visit that I wanted to lose some weight so to give me smaller portions, and she smiled - I was blown away when food optimising was explained to me and I realised that with Slimming World you never need to go hungry. I love food, there’s no better way to start the day than with a full English jusr by changing the way I’ve been cooking. My evening meals are huge bowls of comforting foods such as stews, pasta or soups . I never thought I could lose weight and still feel full after every meal. I feel like I’m making choices not sacrifices ‘ Kris has recently returned from his training at slimming worlds academy in Derbyshire , and is looking forward to taking on his latest challenge in 2018 as a Slimming World consultant . He says ‘ New Years Day this year for me really will be the start of something new , as I’ll be running my first group at St Cuthberts Church Hall, Sandy Park Road , Brislington at 5.30 and 7.30pm. I know without the initial support of my sister, and then my group and consultant I wouldn’t have been able to make the changes I did, and I’m really looking forward to helping others in the same way .

6

Being self employed Consultants learn how to build a successful community-based business. Kris says he can’t wait for the new challenges running his own business will bring. “For me becoming a self-employed franchisee was a great option. I wanted a job that was well paid and flexible so launching my own Slimming World group was an ideal option – I got a brand new career and I can’t wait for my new groups to run now! Sarah Bryant, who runs Slimming World’s Hengrove and Whitchurch groups and manages Kris as a Team Developer, says: “Slimming World Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Kris’s experience of being a successful Slimming World member and his kind and warm personality and great sense of humour I just know that he’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight. He will be a great asset to our Team”

Warming Winter Soup

Curried Butternut Squash and Peanut Butter Soup This is the perfect antidote to those cold January days… Makes about 6 servings Prepare less than 30 mins Cook around 40 mins Ingredients • 1kg butternut squash • 40g butter (almond oil if vegan) • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced • 2 sticks of celery, thinly sliced • 2 tsp mild curry powder • 1 litre veg stock • 5 llbs crunchy peanut butter • 300 ml milk (coconut milk if vegan) • A squeeze of lemon juice • Salt and pepper • 50g salted and roasted peanuts chopped, to garnish • Chopped coriander leaf, to garnish

Method 1. Peel the butternut squash, cut into wedges, remove the seeds and fibres and cut into small chunks. 2. Melt butter or oil in a large saucepan and cook onion and celery on low, until soft and lightly browned. Add the curry powder and fry for 1 minute, then add the squash and stock. Simmer for a good 20 minutes until the squash is very tender. 3. Puree the soup with the peanut butter (in batches if necessary). Return to the pan with milk and lemon juice and heat up again. Season to taste and serve with the peanut and coriander garnish.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark

.

There is the plan to move the Brislington Park and Ride to Hicks Gate and develop the current site for housing and one of most historic local buildings Wick House is looking at being redeveloped as an elderly person’s care home. Whilst Bristol seems to have gone into ‘overdrive’ as a place to work, have fun and see lots of new development the Council on the other hand is going in the opposite direction. The Mayoral system has been extremely damaging to the very fabric of our democracy, decisions are taken without proper (or in some cases none) scrutiny. Holding the Mayor to account for his decisions and the spending of public money have become almost impossible and now that he has sacked members from other parties

This year will go down as one of the most historic ever from Brexit to Trump to a change of Leader for my own party to the snap general Election where Mrs May went in for a stronger mandate only to come out weaker. She should have listened to our very own Brenda from Bristol, when she spoke for millions over having another unnecessary election. The local scene was not much better with threats of massive cuts to our Libraries, lollypop Patrollers and parks and of course Jubilee pool. Thanks to a concerted effort by local people supported by the Lib Dems the threat to the pool was lifted and our libraries limp on to fight another day. Sadly, some of our other cherished local services have not fared so well under the ‘anti- austerity’ Labour Council and its Mayor Marvin Rees. Locally here in Brislington we have had some great successes over the year, the John Peer Factory after years of being an eyesore has a new owner with redevelopment plans. As said we fought alongside local people to save our Wick Road Library and Jubilee pool as well created a new group that is developing exciting ideas around the improvement of the Sandy Park Road shopping area. There is a lot planned for the year ahead with my colleague Andrew Varney’s campaign to see the old Brislington Railway line turned into a linear park and cycleway and not yet another road which is what the Council want.

12

from sitting in his cabinet he essentially feels he can do what he likes without any checks or balances, the decision to pay the previous chief executive £70k falls into that category. We are none the wiser on his plans for the Arena, apart from they have been postponed and he made a recent visit to the far East and China to sell them the idea of a metro system and the redevelopment of the Cumberland Basin as a new housing development, where all the traffic that currently uses will go, we have not been told. Marvin ought to get on well with the Chinese as they do not believe in democratic accountability either. He took his plans for Bristol to share with his audience in the Far East, but did not feel it was important to share his vision with Bristol Councillor’s. So my New Year’s resolution is support a campaign to bring open and democratically accountable Government back to Bristol. May I wish all of you a Happy, peaceful and healthy New Year to you all.

Your garden in January The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and borders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and re-shaped. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scarce for them over the winter.

Plant of the Month Helleborus

The essential gardening jobs for January Protect plants January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors. Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become waterlogged.Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap.

Dig over bare ground Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up.

Feed the birds Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.

Enjoy your garden! 14

Why should you plant them? Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.

The number of LPAs granted has tripled – do you understand the benefits of having an LPA?The number of Lasting Power of Attorney (LPAs) granted annually has tripled between 2010 and 2015. The increase in the number of LPAs being granted may be due to a drive to increase public awareness and to encourage people to plan for the future. The LPA is a legal document that appoints someone you trust to help you make your own decisions or to make decisions on your behalf. Typically, this would be a member of your immediate family, a loved one or a legal professional. Having an LPA in place means you can entrust your decision making to someone close to you, in the event that you are no longer able to make those decisions for yourself. With some experts reporting that as much as 60% of the UK population does not have a Will, it is important that people understand the benefits of planning ahead, regardless of our age or health.

The top 3 movies For January The Christmas period might be over, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still any gifts to be had when paying a visiting to your local cinema. Whether it’s by checking out Aardman’s prehistoric animated offering in Early Man, taking a trip to the vibrant Mexican underworld in Pixar’s Coco, or witnessing the finale to Thomas’ dystopian adventure in The Death Cure – don’t miss out on these New Year niceties! First up to the plate on January 19th is Pixar’s highly-anticipated next project: Coco. Centring around the colourful Day of the Dead Mexican holiday, the story charts young Miguel’s journey to the underworld and his mission to find his way back to the land of the living. Only by finding his great-great-grandfather does he stand a chance of doing so, with maybe the odd song or two thrown in along the way. One week later, on January 26th, audiences can look forward to a bumper crop of unmissable cinema experiences in the form of Early Man and Maze Runner: The Death Cure. The first of which promises to be a fun-filled comedic romp, with caveman Dug and his tribe forced to go head to head with the brash brutes of the Bronze Age. The Death Cure, meanwhile, is set to bring James Dashner’s Maze Runner film adaptation trilogy full circle, as Thomas and friends face their hardest challenge yet. You can nab two free tickets to see any of the films mentioned by completing the puzzle on the next page. But regardless, there’s plenty of reasons to be excited about visiting the cinema this January. Aaron Potter is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to veiw each month at your loal cinema.

De-clutter for 2018

So you have survived Christmas and are now thinking: ‘ Where am I going to put all this stuff?” it happens every year (and throughout). We find ourselves submerged in gifts, and whilst it is lovely to receive them, there is only so much space in the house! You have two choices I guess, buy a bigger house or maybe it’s time to de-clutter! Mike at Direct Local explains. I find it hard to work when there is a lot of clutter around me. I resort to having a good clear up before I can channel my mind and get things achieved. At the same time, it is not always as easy as it sounds as we all get attached to our belongings. With this in mind, I thought I would try to help those of you who would like it. Once you have cleared the clutter, what you have remaining are the essential elements, which tend to be more beautiful and more elegant. 1.Make a list As with many tasks, it is usually easier to start with a plan. Write down all the rooms that you would like to work on and then start one area at a time. 2.What doesn’t have a function? This does take a certain amount of honesty, and is sometimes easier to do with someone else’s possessions, but, if you are doing this on your own, a little ruthlessness is called for. We all have sentimentality towards certain items, and hold onto others ‘just in case’. 3.De-clutter your wardrobe Anything that attains a hole is binned immediately. Effectively, as we get older our size and style changes as our skin and hair colour and some things just don’t work anymore. Whites don’t always stay as white as they once were, and neither does black. Whilst it is lovely to have summer beach clothes – how many do we need? Likewise, a pair of shoes that have never been worn because we don’t have the rest of the outfit to go

28

with them possibly could find a better home. A great way to do this is to turn all your hangers the wrong way, have a look in six months time which items haven’t been worn – the likelihood is that they will still be unworn six months later. 4.Dvds, Cds, Vhs, Cassettes In this digital age, so many of the above are now just not used and they can take up vast amounts of space – how often do you use them? I have found that I now upload all of my Cds to my Mac and play them through my TV, on my phone, in the car, on my ipad etc. as such, I bundled up all of my Dvds as Christmas gifts. The same unfortunately goes books. 5.Take a photo Sometimes, all we need is a reminder of something that we no longer need and, as such, a photograph of that chipped vase with some lovely flowers is all we require to allow ourselves to part with something we can no longer house. 6.The kitchen Now there is a special room, which always seem to harbour every gadget, dish and mug that we would possibly house. If you have a dishwasher, I would imagine that even you are surprised by the number of mugs you now have. I shall tell you, that if you have less mugs, it is amazing how much quicker it is to empty the dishwasher. Have you held onto the roasting tins that come with the last cooker you owned?

7.Retain, Recycle, Remove As you start to approach this mammoth task, you could try to separate into three criteria. Items you want to retain: items you could sell on eBay or donate to charity: and items that need disposing of in the bin. You may be surprised how much money you could raise by selling a few items that you really don’t want. This goes for clothing, as well as Cds, Dvds, furniture and even jewellery. You may even be able to have a holiday if you have really good clear out! And you can even get someone to do the hard work for you. For a fee. 8.Five Item Rule If the above seems daunting, how about looking at it in a far gentler way. Say, every time you clean or tidy the house, you select just five items that you no longer need and set them aside in a box or bag, or the boot of your car ready for you to drop off when your next passing a charity shop? Over a period of time, you would be surprised by the space that you reclaim. It may seem daunting; but having a clear-out can benefit not just your home, but also your mind. Psychologists have found that women with cluttered homes have higher levels of cortisol – the stress hormone associated with chronic fatigue, post traumatic stress disorder, and higher risk of mortality. A recent study also showed that physical clutter affects people’s ability to focus, process information, and be productive – so jilting the junk could be just the energy boost you need. What are you waiting for?

Charlie’s Top Destination Tips for 2018.

1.The Country – South Africa. Whisk yourself off to this incredible country for unrivalled wildlife, cosmopolitan cities, incredible food & wine, beaches and unforgettable experiences. South Africa has it all. Why not combine a few days in modern Cape Town with a self-drive trip along the stunning Garden Route to Mossel Bay. Or a few days wine tasting with a once in a lifetime safari staying in a luxury lodge on a private game reserve attempting to spot the Big Five. 2.The City – St Petersburg. Russia will be the focus of the world’s attention during the summer months for the World Cup. Why not escape the crowds and head to St Petersburg in the Spring or Autumn? This majestic city – ‘The Venice of the North’ – has so much to offer. From the majestic palaces of the former Russian nobility and the vast collection of fine art at the Hermitage Museum to world-renowned ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre and the old summer residences of the Tsars. It’s a fascinating time to visit Russia with many exhibitions taking place throughout the city commemorating the centenary years since the Russian Revolution. 3.The Island – Mauritius. Thinking of Mauritius automatically conjures up images of pristine white sand beaches, blue seas and relaxing with a cocktail in hand. However, this diverse island has a lot more to offer. Spend a couple of weeks here and as well as switching-off on the beach at one of the myriad luxury resorts or in a private villa, you can also spend time in the Black River Gorges National Park witnessing dramatic waterfalls, rare bird species and the luscious green forests of the highlands.

4.The Adventure – Chile Chile recently came first in Lonely Planet’s countries to visit in 2018 list and it’s no surprise. Vineyards, mountains, desert, and glaciers – Chile has a diverse landscape all of which will take your breath away. With British Airways now offering a direct route from London Heathrow to Santiago it is more accessible than ever. Santiago is a bustling, cosmopolitan city and if you venture further you will experience turquoise blue lagoons and breathtaking glaciers at the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. Sip Chilean Sauvignon Blancs or ruby red Chilean Carmeneres as you skip from winery to winery, and marvel at the Atacama Desert, one of the world’s top destinations for stargazing. 5.The Rail Journey – Rocky Mountaineer Marvel at the huge, rugged peaks of the snow-capped iconic Rocky Mountains in Canada as you glide along in comfort on the Rocky Mountaineer train journey. With routes travelling from Vancouver to Whistler, Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff, this luxurious train journey passes through natural landscapes of picture slate grey mountains, deep green forests, and turquoise lakes. The Rocky Mountaineer is an all-dome train, with large windows so that you can gaze in awe at the wonderful scenery, there is even an open-air vestibule so you can take in the fresh mountain air. If any of the above has inspired you or for any of your travel needs in 2018 get in touch with Charlie Dyson, your local Bristol based personal Travel Counsellor on 0117 911 5880 Mob: 07766 722254 or visit https://www.travelcounsellors.co.uk/charlie. dyson
