Your garden in June

Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden. Plant of the month Rose Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.

The essential gardening jobs for June Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.

8

A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mover blades if we have a drought. Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sap-sucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide. Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.

How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser. Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Get A Back Up Plan

Russell Isaac runs ITHomeHelp, providing home-visit PC, tablet and smartphone training and troubleshooting services

I regularly visit clients who’s PC/Laptops have unexpectedly “died” - all too often with no back-up copy of their data. Photos, documents, downloads.....all unnecessarily lost. Backing up your computer is something everyone should do and is so simple to do. There are a number of options so let’s look at the pros and cons; 1.Copy files to a USB flash drive These tiny plug-in drives are cheap, require no set-up and allow you to copy your files onto them. PROS: Cheap. Portable. Simple. CONS: Easy to misplace. Not always durable 2.Copy files to a Portable Hard Drive As above, but bigger unit with bigger storage – often with it’s own back-up software to automate the process. PROS: Can schedule automatic back-ups. Easy to use. CONS: Drives can sometimes fail in time. Can be expensive for larger capacity.

.3.Copy to a CD/DVD Pros: No drive failure issue. CONS: Time-consuming. Reliant on on-going CD compatibility. Relatively small data storage capacity 4.Cloud storage Personally, I think this is the way forward. Your data can be safely stored remotely, and accessed from anywhere. Small amounts can be stored free. PROS: Can be free. Unlike all the other “hardware” solutions, no risk of theft/loss. Main cloud providers are highly secure. Flexible. Allows easy file sharing. Quick to save files. CONS: Subscription cost of storing larger amounts of data. Requires internet connection. Theoretical minimal risk of server hacking Whichever you choose - ENSURE YOU BACK UP. And if you choose to back up to an external device – KEEP IT SAFE AND NOT WITH THE COMPUTER. Russell Isaac can be contacted on 0774 775 3764 or via www.ithomehelp.biz

JURASSIC WORLD FALLEN KINGDOM

The sequel to 2015’s prehistoric outing, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom kicks things off in a big way this June 6th. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both return in the lead roles to help resolve the fallout following Isla Nubar’s destruction in the previous film. Their plan? To bring all the remaining dinos roaming the island into an American sanctuary facility. However, as you’ll expect, things don’t quite go to plan. Next up is the long-awaited continuation of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, now headed up by a team of elite female fraudsters. Sandra Bullock leads the crew as Danny Ocean’s estranged sister Debbie, recently released from prison and sharing her family’s call for a great con. Intent on robbing the Anne Hathaway’s prized Jewels during the Met Gala in New York City, the Ocean’s 8 crew includes Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, and more. Pick up your popcorn and strap into you seat, it’s all happening this June!

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club

The 2018 season is now well underway with almost twenty mixed and ladies friendly games played already. The Ladies and Gents Bristol and District Leagues started in May as did the club league – so – a lot of bowling has been enjoyed and there is plenty still to come between now and the end of September. The ladies have eight friendly games to play this season and there wasearly success with wins against Avonmouth and Canford during April. Some notable success too in mixed friendly games ---- these are played mainly for enjoyment and the pleasure taken from being on the green but --- it is always good to win a game and in May wins came in away games against Page Park and Begbrook Green --- very good results. The club league, which does include a knock out competition, started on May 8th and saw wins for Exiles --- captained by Trevor Scanlon and A.N.Other --- captained by Dawn Evans. A week later Exiles were victorious again, coming back from a long way down to beat Hits and Misses, captained by Brian Crawley. In the other game played that evening there was a reverse result from the previous week when A.N.Other , having established a big lead were eventually overcome by Charlie Maby’s Nomads in the first round of the Knock out Cup. The men’s Bristol and District League campaign started on April 26th when the visitors were St.Annes Park. Always formidable opponents the visitors came out on top, taking eight of the ten points available. There was a little more success when Keynsham C came to play on May 10th. Although winning only one rink of three played City and Port won overall and took a valuable six points from the game. The first away game of the season was at Victoria Park on May 17th. This was a close contest throughout with the lead changing hands several times. But, when the 17th and final end had been bowled the hosts were ahead on two of the three rinks and won the game overall to takeeight points.

18

The Ladies League team made an excellent start to their season by winning the first two games. Severnvale were the visitors on May 11TH--- City and Port won on both rinks to take the eight points. Then, on May 16th the trip to Portishead proved to be well worthwhile --- it resulted in a win on one rink and victory overall to take six points, a deserved reward for a very good performance. Dawn Evans played her second round Bristol Section Champion of Champions game at home to Val Molton of Kingswood and Hanham on Saturday 12th May. There was some very good bowling, with both players bowling some excellent woods through the game. The winner in this competition is first to 21 shots and Val Molton reached that target ahead of Dawn Evans who scored eight. This year’s President’s Day will be on Saturday June 9th, starting at 2.30pm. There will once again be a spider ---- not a real one ---- with a good bottle of spirit as the prize, plenty of fun bowling ---- with prizes, a raffle and --- a barbeque. Club Competitions will start soon and culminate on finals week-end, this year September 8th and 9th. So --- why not come and join us this season? Bowling is a good, healthy outdoor activity and --anyone can do it. Come along and give it a try, free of charge or obligation. To arrange your Tuesday evening free try bowling session call Lis Davies on 0117 9380408. All equipment is supplied and there are experienced bowlers on hand to offer help and advice. If you like bowling and decide to join ---there is a free club shirt once you have paid your membership fee. Daily Routines & Timely Meals Improve Performance There is increasing research into Circadian Rhythms – better known as Body Clocks.

8. Help your body wind down in the evening by only eating a small supper 9. Pursue leisure activities to take your mind off work at night to let your brain wind down as well 10. Plan your daily routine, monitor and record how you feel – then adjust accordingly

With new smart watches there is more data than ever available for research and some of that information is proving useful and illuminating. Regular routines – meaning getting up at about the same time, eating regular meals, having specific times for working, relaxing and ultimately sleeping is healthier for you. To help yourself you will feel and perform better if you: 1.Get into a routine and stick to it – even on weekends 2. Are active in daylight and rest in darkness 3. Expose yourself to sunshine in the morning 4. Exercise or do physical activity, if you can, around midday 5. Stop using smartphones, tablets or computer screens a couple of hours before sleeping 6. Eat meals at regular times as they can significantly impact your body clock 7. Eat larger meals earlier in the day because your . body can process the food better

ETHICAL LETTINGS AGENCY TEMPLE HOMES MOVES INTO MONTPELIER WITH RUBEN PROPERTY Ethical lettings and property management company Temple Homes has acquired the portfolio of Ruben Property, in a move which brings two young businesspeople together in historic offices in central Bristol. Temple Homes was first set up four years ago as an alternative to the high street property agency, as a company where the rights of tenants are held in the same regard as those of the landlord. Following consistent and significant growth since incorporation, Temple Homes has now acquired the portfolio of Ruben Property, established by Ben Dembo in the 1980s and recently taken over by his daughter and co-director Hattie. To coincide with the acquisition, Temple Homes has rebranded and has moved into the very same offices in Picton Street, Montpelier, occupied by Mr Dembo’s company from 1988 to 2001. The expanded Temple Homes now has a portfolio of some 220 properties across Bristol, a mixture of let-only and managed properties. With co-director Ms Dembo, 24, obtaining shareholding in Temple Homes in exchange for bringing her knowledge, qualifications and experience along with the Ruben Property portfolio, the pair have a solid footing on which to establish the future of their company.

“So we have a chance here to do something new and exciting, which chimes with the culture of Bristol and is based on decency and morality, not just profit. “How does this manifest itself? It’s things like not marking up contractor costs to landlords, like keeping our tenant referencing service in house so we can build a rapport with tenants whilst also accommodating personal circumstances. We will hold viewings outside office hours and give all tenants until 10am the following morning to submit offers, so people are not rushed into decisions and so that all parties have an equal opportunity to offer. “This approach to viewings is also of great benefit to our landlords, who can ensure their asset is let to the most suitable tenants and not the first ones through the door.

Ms Dembo runs the finances and day-to-day business operations at Temple Homes while Mr Mueller focuses on business growth. She said: “This partnership has given me a chance to conduct business in a way that I feel is right.

“Our openness extends to the property inspections on our portfolio of managed homes, where the reports generated are sent to both our landlords and tenants to ensure our comments, positive or negative, are transparent. This openness nurtures respect between all of our clients.

“Finding a new business partner with the same ethos and goals as me is a considerable achievement and we can now move forward with Temple Homes’ goal to change the perception of the industry.”

“Our role is about creating trust and respect in relationships between tenants and landlords. The only thing that separates a good tenant from a bad one is the respect they have for the agency or landlord that they’re renting from.

Mr Mueller said: “We’re in a position loaded with potential. We have a large portfolio, consistent growth and a reputation for prioritising quality of service to both landlords and tenants, over profit.

“We’re still making our mark and, at the moment, I’m constantly having to convince people – especially parents of tenants – that we’re different. I want to reach the point where people know the brand for the values we’re bringing to the industry.

“It’s hard for tenants at the moment. There aren’t many who enjoy the experience of renting. We want to change that, while helping people get a roof over their heads. But we also recognise that landlords want to capitalise on their major assets. There’s nothing wrong with that either. We manage this by working with considerate landlords who have the same philosophy as us.

“It certainly feels like the right thing to be back in the home of Ben Dembo’s old offices on Picton Street. Montpelier’s a part of the city which reflects Bristol’s mixture of capitalism and socialism. The property market is somewhere where those two ideologies meet and we want it to be done the right way.”

To Have a Bath or Not to Have a Bath? That is the Question Our, oh so caring, Government are at it again! Spying into our personal habits and trying to dictate what we get up to in our own homes. “What is it this time?” I hear you ask; the Department of Environment is discussing setting each of us a “water target” of the amount of water for each of us to use daily. The rationale is that water is a scarce commodity, and in London and the South-East – where else to merit such attention? – becoming scarcer as demand increases. Elsewhere, water provision is adequate, indeed plentiful is some areas of this island, as we all know. And it’s not as if this hasn’t been tried before: during World War 2, people were exhorted to restrict their baths to 4 inches deep. This was during a time of general rationing and the pompous Captain Mainwaring types couldn’t resist interfering in all areas of family life under the motto “Don’t you know that there is a War on?” It didn’t work well then and people are more conscious of the need for cleanliness now. Those were the days when people had a bath once a week, whether they needed it or not. Nowadays, if you don’t shower daily and use deodorant, you are the person no-one wants to sit by on the bus or train. Showers are much more popular and prevalent than in those days and obviously use far less water. There are shower heads you can buy that mix air and water so that you get the power, but still save on water.

Thankfully, many more take showers now, but more frequently. So the Department of Environment are recommending measures like we take one bath per week, turn off the tap whilst cleaning our teeth, planting Mediterranean plants rather than native species –surely that is risky given how many non-native plants have spread and become real pests like Japanese knotweed and Himalyan Balsam. The D of E also ignore the fact that people generally are a lot more conscious of water usage due to bills rising so much over the past 20 years or so; our local company, Bristol Water were prevented from implementing rises in future years that the regulator viewed as extortionate. Water bills will still go up, but just not as much. But what about the responsibilities of the Water companies? Everyone has seen and reported leaks that are then not tackled for days, sometimes weeks. It was reported on the news that in the Thames Water area alone, enough water is lost through leaks in a month to keep a large town like Newcastle provided for a year. So let’s start there shall we, holding the water companies to account. There is one suggestion that is being floated though; having baths together. Now that is a lot more fun.
