THE WORD ON THE STREET It’s the little things that mean a lot By Eileen Means Ok so Bristol City Council is in a financial mess a) because this nasty Tory Government has cut the funding year on year, starting with the Coalition Government joined by their minions the Liberal Democrats b) due to the extra burdens left by the previous Mayor George Ferguson and c) the incompetence, some would say wilful dishonesty to Councillors and Auditors by some Senior Officers who definitely did know better. Lots and lots of savings to be made. We get that, the public of Bristol; After all, whatever the reason, wherever the blame lies, we are the ones who are paying up via our Council Tax and other ‘taxes’ like Parking fees and Penalty Charge Notices (I seem to get caught out for a LOT of these). But in the recent round of ‘Consultation proposals’ the focus seems to be on removing or cutting services that, in the grand scheme of things cost a pittance but make a major difference.
One such service are the ‘lollipop’ men and women. We all remember them from our own school days, even if we may not be currently involved with primary education for our children or grandchildren. The proposal is for those who work where there is an automatic crossing to be deleted/made redundant told “you are not wanted” WHEN THE REVERSE IS TRUE if parents/grandparents/ teachers and the children themselves are asked about it. My eldest daughter went to Hillcrest School (as it was called then) just off the main A37 Wells Road between Totterdown and Knowle. It is one of the busiest roads in Bristol with lots of huge lorries, buses, delivery vans –every type of road worthy vehicle – and probably quite a few not roadworthy! It is terrifying for young children and every parent warns them to take great care. Yet, for say, 4-8 year olds, we all know that despite warnings, young children run into roads: they see a friend, see a cat or bird, or simply forget and they are off. The extra protection offered by the ‘Lollipop’ person is vital. And they cost a pittance in terms of council finances, being largely retired people, working few hours for low pay. The Council won’t go bust employing ‘Lollipop” men and women. So please Mr Mayor and Council; keep them and keep our little ones safe on our busy roads.

CITY AND PORT OF BRISTOL BOWLING CLUB Saturday July 1st saw the arrival of bowlers from the Bexhill Bowling Club to the City and Port of Bristol Green as part of their Weston-Super-Mare based Summer Tour. They came as a result of being invited to play a return game when City and Port visited them in 2016 when on tour in East Sussex. A very enjoyable afternoon of bowling on six rinks ---- it was great to see the green filled with bowlers ---- and the chance to exchange memories of last year’s game made it a special and memorable occasion.
There were prizes for the top lady and the top man ---- based on rink scores over three games. This year’s winners were Lin Burand and Mervyn White --- well done to them. But the week was not only about bowling. There was plenty of time to explore Bournemouth and the surrounding area. For some it was a ride on the Bournemouth Wheel, a ride on the land train or a longer ride on the bus to Swanage and a cruise along the Jurassic Coast. But --- being at the seaside in the sun ---- the sea was just too good to resist.
Two days later, on Monday July 3rd it was time for the City and Port tour to head off to Bournemouth --- returning there for the first time since 2011 and staying at the excellent Whitehall Hotel. The sun shone and temperatures soared throughout the stay and the four games enjoyed. Starting at the Argyll Bowling Club ---- not far from the sea on the day of arrival and then starting early on the second day for the game at picturesque Broadstone- Wessex ----- a green originally in private ownership. A drive through the New Forest was the way to New Milton on the third day and the final game of the week was at Knyveton Park ---not far from the hotel.
For the less energetic ---- the hotel did provide an evening of music and another of horseracing ---- all good fun. This year’s tour was lead by Lis Davies, assisted by Bill Hatherall and it was once again, a great success. Club Competitions have almost reached the point where this year’s finalists are known. There have been some very close games and some big come backs. Julie Looker was the first bowler to reach the finals ---- she will play David Garrod in the final of the Bill Deakin Novice Trophy. This year’s finals will be played over the week-end September 9th and 10th --- a highlight of the clubs season.
Results of tour games are much less important than the pleasure taken from each of them but ---two games were won and two lost.
The season runs until the first week-end in October so --- there is still time to come along and try bowling. Call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713 for further information.

Welcome back St Marys Church news! Despite the fact that we haven’t managed to get an article in for the last couple of months, there has still been much happening at St Mary’s. At the time of writing we have just had a beautiful wedding here and there are some more coming up in the next couple of months. St Mary’s is a lovely church in which to be married and so if you are thinking of getting married and live in our parish or have a recognized connection with us then you would be most welcome to come in and have a look and find out more. It is very special to have God’s blessing on this important day in your lives and as you begin a different life together as husband and wife.
If you’d like to come along then sign up on the noticeboard at the back of church, noting your choice of food. Cars will be leaving the Health Centre Car Park from 5.15 pm. The hunt is not timed, so please drive safely. There won’t be any Messy Church in August but we shall be back to normal on Thursday September 21st, hope those of you going away have a good break. Monday 21st until Friday 25th August church will be closed for tea and coffee as it is our ‘Seniors’ Summer Sensation’ Holiday-at-Home. Please note there is no Holy Communion Service on Thursday 24th August. We shall return to normal opening hours on Saturday 26th. Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August, we shall be having ‘Open Church’. Opening for lunch which will be served at 12noon and then cream teas and cakes until £5. All at reasonable prices – avoid the traffic and crowded places and come along! And then ……. September – which always feels like a sort of new start. Watch out next month for what’s happening here at St Mary’s, Shirehampton!
We had an excellent Patronal Weekend at the beginning of July, when we celebrated the life of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, after whom our church is named. We had a really good Summer Fayre and it was lovely to see so many families coming along, children enjoying the Bouncy Castle and the face painting, lucky dip and games and lots happening for the adults too! We also had our Flower Festival, this year entitled ‘Take my hands On Sunday, at our services we had a special focus on Mary and the example she was for our lives by her humility and the way she responded to God’s call to her to be a very special mother – the mother of His only Son. We have some firm supporters of our Beetle Drives and the next one is being held on Wednesday 2nd August, starting with lunch at 1.00pm followed by the ‘beetle’. Tickets are available from the Church Office - £5.00. If you’ve never been to one why not give it a try? On Saturday 12th August we shall be holding a Bric-a-Brac Sale in church 10.00am - 12noon, come along and have a rummage! If you have anything you could donate to this event, please bring it into church the week before. That evening is our annual Car Treasure Hunt, always brilliantly put together by Tim Forder, our church organist. It always finishes at a pub where we can eat together and celebrate (or commiserate!).

4 Simple changes to make if you want to lose weight 1. Drink more water Water has numerous health benefits. Often we can mistake hunger for thirst so next time you feel hungry try drinking water and you may find the hunger cravings go away. 4. Increase your step count When trying to lose weight it is important to get active and burn calories. A really simple way to do this is just to walk more and up your step count.
2. Eat more fruit and vegetables We all know eating fruit and vegetables is good for us. But did you know that eating more fruit and vegetables can help you to manage your appetite? Because fruit and vegetables are so high in fiber they fill your stomach meaning you feel fuller so you eat less. Vegetables and fruit are also very low calorie.
3. Reduce Your Portion Sizes When you are trying to lose weight it’s important to control your calorie intake. Reducing the portion sizes of the food you eat is one way you can reduce your total calorie intake.
Another way to up your step count is to take the stairs rather than a lift or escalator. The more you move the more calories you burn and therefore the more weight you will lose.

Were you aware.. That anybody can call themselves an accountant?!! The words Dr and Lawyer are protected terms. Meaning that you actually had to pass the training to be deemed a "Dr or a Lawyer"
Not so for accountants. Anyone can call themselves an accountant! I have completed 7 years of studying, 4 years of training and I have over 20 years experience, so always check your accountants credentials. There are four chartered bodies in the UK for accountants, ask if your accountant is qualified with one of them.
And of course, if you want a reliable accountant who is a member of one of these bodies, give us a call Bristol 01179235394 Email enquiries@tsabusinessadvisors.co.uk

Mobile Phones in Business How often do you hear “What did we do before mobile phones?” And of course, the smart phones of today are massively powerful computers, communication devices, cameras, entertainment centres and business tools. Productivity has risen year on year principally because people can work on the move. Be that taking and receiving calls, replying to emails, or continuing drafting notes and documents held in the cloud. One thing that has not changed, however, is the perception of the mobile phone number. In the UK all mobile phone numbers from the major networks start 07. So, if the only number used by a sole trader or other business is 07…. Several hidden messages – none of them helpful are conveyed: 1. Mobile – mobile means NOT permanent or moving around or no fixed abode. To many this implies flighty or here today gone tomorrow
3. Just started – so far you haven’t organised your phone number because you’re a new start. Many people are nervous giving business to recently established businesses. Will they survive? Are they insured? Will their guarantee mean anything? Will they be around to fix it if there is a problem? By not having a landline phone number on your business card, van wrap, or sales literature you are already disadvantaging yourself against your competitors. For as little as £5* per month this problem can be overcome. It may be you don’t think it is important. It may be you think to have a landline number is expensive. It may be it’s never occurred to you. Techvolution offer very straight talking business advice to new start businesses and can organise a suitable landline number and sort out that part of your business image and communication requirements. Note: Prices exclude VAT
2. Small – only small companies or “little businesses” don’t have a proper landline number. Do you want to be seen as a “little” business – it doesn’t inspire confidence

With its 65th Anniversary this year, the VW Transporter is going strong The 6th generation of Transporter launched with the wide range of engine, transmission and trim level options ever offered by Volkswagen. The 2.0 TDI diesel is available with four different power outputs, with 84hp and 102hp units equipped with five-speed manual gearboxes and the 140hp and Highline-only 180hp engine either with a six-speed manual or an optional six-speed DSG automatic.
Three trim levels are on offer, all with significant equipment boosts over the outgoing model. Even the entry-level Startline models include DAB+ digital radio, 5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and USB connectivity and Volkswagen’s acclaimed Automatic Post Collision Braking system, which automatically applies the brakes after a collision, reducing the risk of a secondary impact.
All models benefit from Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion Technology modifications as standard, with low rolling resistance tyres, and regenerative braking and Start/Stop systems. Unusually, the T6 will also be available with two petrol engines in 2016, making it the only petrol van in the sector.
The Transporter is Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ biggest selling model in the UK and has consistently set the benchmark for quality, practicality and low running costs. The 6th generation model raises the standards once more with a package that delivers improved efficiency, greater comfort and higher equipment levels.
There's a range of body options and vehicle weights to suit the needs of all businesses. There are three roof height options – standard (1410mm), medium (1635mm) and high (1940mm) are available along with vehicle weights from 2600kg to 3200kg and on short and long wheelbase options, making the 6th generation eminently versatile.

The idea of towing a caravan can put many people off buying one, but it needn't be scary at all. With a little care and preparation, towing a caravan can be stress-free and safe, providing you follow these common-sense rules. Give yourself more space and time for everything. Brake earlier, accelerate more slowly, and leave more stopping distance. You're towing a giant room made of plastic, wood and metal behind you, so drive as carefully as possible.
Make sure you have a good view of your caravan – extension mirrors are essential. Take them off when you're not towing – it's illegal to use them with nothing in tow. Do not transport humans or animals in your caravan while you're towing. An excited dog could easily knock the caravan off balance. And forget felt tip pens on cardboard – your number plate must conform to British Standards and be illuminated at night. And finally, ignore what the nasty men say on Top Gear too – caravan users have just as much right to be on the road as any other user. But if you do find a long queue of traffic waiting behind you pull into a lay-by to let the other vehicles pass. It’s the polite thing to do!
Take corners wider than you would in a car, so the back of the caravan doesn't clip the kerb. One false move could destroy all your glassware.
Speed limits are lower when you're a tower – for instance, don't exceed 50mph on a single carriageway, or 60mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. You can't use the outside lane of a three -lane motorway either, unless instructed to do so.

AMERICAN MADE If you’re not already seeing stars this Summer, get ready, as August brings with it a slew of familiar-looking faces worth getting excited for. From ass-kicking femme fatales, roguish drug smugglers, to badass gunslingers, there’s plenty of heroes to see this month at your local Cineworld.
Set within the otherworldly dimension of Mid-World where Idris Elba’s gunslinger acts as the last of his kind tasked to defend the titular tower, he’ll need all the help he can get if he’s to take down the man in black.
First up kicking us off in a big way on the 9th of August is Atomic Blonde, the super stylish tale of espionage and action, which sees Charlize Theron’s Lorraine attempt to singlehandedly end the cold war the only way she knows how – breaking bones. Directed by one half of the duo that gave us John Wick, expect amazing fight choreography, a killer soundtrack, and stunning visuals.
Like the chance to win movie mechendise thanks to Cineworld Bristol then visit www.facebook.com/directlocal and enter the competition
Fast forward to 18th August where we stick with the action, but swap thriller for fantasy as we plunge into the depths of the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved Dark Tower book series.
Bringing August to a close is Tom Cruise’s second major release this Summer American Made, the true story of TWA pilot Barry Seal, who enjoys more trouble than he bargained for when working for both the CIA and drug cartel simultaneously.
With so many stars returning to the big screen this August, can you afford not to strap into your cinema seat?
