Homelessness in Bristol: What would you do? Two contrasting headlines this week have drawn attention to the problem of homelessness in Bristol and other cities. First, the new Housing Minister who is now responsible for solving or at the least ameliorating the problem, Heather Wheeler, said she didn’t know what is causing the rise in homelessness across the country. Enlightenment follows later, Minister, so keep reading. Second, a homeless couple have set up ‘home’ – well a base under cover – since last September outside Select Women’s fashion store in Broadmead. They have become quite famous locally. In the cold snowy weather, the staff of Select and Superdrug checked on them and refilled their hot water bottles. But Bristol City Council and Streetwise, supported by the Chief Executive of Destination Bristol who is also head of the Broadmead Business Improvement District (BID) tried to get an Injunction in the County Court to get the couple removed. He said that “they are a possible danger to the public” and that rough sleepers were having a “dramatic negative impact” on visitors and businesses.
What would you do? According to Shelter, the homelessness charity set up after ‘Cathy Come Home’ first aired in the 1960s, rough sleeping has more than doubled nationally since 2010. The evidence is all around us clearly to be seen in Bristol City Centre. Less visible is the increase in the number of homeless households in temporary accommodation that according to Shelter have increased to 79,000+ in 2016/2017, an increase of over 65%. Over ¼ of all homelessness acceptances by Local Councils are evictions from privately rented households. 1.2 million are on Council House waiting lists The supply of genuinely affordable housing has virtually dried up; 5,380 affordable houses (government definition) were built in 2016 -2017. This shortage of supply to meet demand has been made worse by welfare benefits cuts. Taking housing supply as a whole, 4/5 will be unaffordable to people on benefits by 2020. According to estimates, Bristol alone needs 3,500 new units each year. In Bristol almost half the population live in rented homes, including 18% in socially rented – Council Housing and Housing Association – properties, 29% in private rented housing. There is your answer Housing Minister. Demand for truly affordable housing way outstrips supply. The City Council is tackling this as speedily as it can with new large developments planned at Lockleaze, Hengrove, Hartcliffe, Southmead and Ashton and smaller development sites across the city. This is praiseworthy and a lot of families and individuals will benefit. Hopefully in Bristol at least, far fewer children will be in temporary accommodation in future. But will this help determined rough sleepers like the two in Broadmead who have refused offers of assistance from homelessness support services? Ought they to be moved on using the full power of the Law? Tricky, very tricky to resove. Article By Elieen Means Chair of Bristol for Europe Chair of Bristol Bordeaux Partnership

Your garden in April
Spring should be well under way this month with daffodils in full flow, their bright flowers enough to cheer up any day. Blossom trees will be blooming and fresh growth will be appearing on plants everywhere. “April showers’ are common but don’t be deceived by sudden burst of rainfall – you may need to start watering plants more regularly on dry, bright and windy days. With longer days and stronger sunshine growing conditions are continually improving and the warmer weather will give us all the opportunity to get busy in our gardens. Plant of the month: Rhododendron
rest of the garden will The essential gardening The also be growing well now, so jobs for A pril if you have been putting off Sow hardy annuals Hardy annuals are plants that can be sown from seed in the open ground. Get them off to an early start by sowing in pots or modules. Modular trays are also handy for sowing summer bedding plants such as marigolds, lobelia and petunias. Label each seed tray and once they are growing put them outside when the weather is warm day and night. Support climbers Climbing plants should be growing rapidly now, so will need ample support for new growth. Extend or replace trellis as necessary or add more wire to archers and tripods. New shoots will need to be gently encouraged sideways as they grow. This will send vital growth hormones doing the length of the shoot rather than just to the tip and so will encourage flowering all over the plant.

carrying out any major pruning then now is the time to bite the bullet and get it done. Trees, shrubs and hedges should be cut back now before birds begin to nest. Care for your lawn The lawn will need regular mowing from now until autumn. Get some maintenance carried out to your lawn mower to ensure it stays in good running order – at the very least your mower blades should newly sharpened ready for regular use. Keep the edges of the lawn tidy after moving with a sharp pair of shears or a lawn edger. Don’t forget to give the lawn a spring feed after mowing if you haven’t got around to doing it yet. If a more drastic approach is needed to spruce up your lawn, sowing seeds for new lawns or over seeding dead patches can be carried out from mid-April onwards.
Enjoy your garden!
Why should you plant them? Ancient Greek meaning “Rose tree’ the rhododendron family includes azaleas. These stunning shrubs flower in all sorts of vibrant colours and can help brighten those difficult dark spots in your garden. Rhododendrons are grown for their spectacular flowers usually borne in spring, although some – the deciduous rhododendron or azaleas have good autumn colour. How should you plant them? In the wild rhododendrons are woodland plants, so they prefer dappled sunshine and can manage well in shade. They like plenty of water however will not do well in boggy or badly draining soil, so drainage is key. Plant in autumn or spring and use ericaceous compost.
Fresh Peach and Amaretto Crumble Cake
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 20cm x 20cm square tin (or similar sized rectangular tin). Start by halving the peaches, removing the stones and laying them cut side up in a baking dish. Generously splosh over the Amaretto and then dot the butter and sprinkle the sugar over the peaches. Put in the oven for about 40 minutes depending on initial ripeness. They are done when a knife slides through easily. Put the peaches to one side to cool slightly and turn the oven down to 170°C.
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •
170g butter 170g caster sugar 4 large eggs 180g plain flour 1¼ tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 50g almonds 70g Amaretti biscuits For the baked peaches 4 peaches 50g butter 50g light brown sugar a good slug of Amarettoe)
In the meantime, make the crumble topping and the sponge mix. For the crumble, put the Amaretti biscuits into a plastic zip-lock bag and bash them with a rolling pin until you get relatively even crumbs. Finely chop the almonds and add them to the bag, giving the mixture a shake to combine. For the sponge, cream the butter and sugar until paler in colour. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. Sift in the flour and baking powder and fold to form a smooth glossy sponge mixture. Mash or chop up three of the peach halves and fold into the sponge. Spoon half of the mixture into the tin, then scatter three-quarters of the crumble mixture over the top. Spoon the remaining sponge over the top and then carefully smooth flat. Cut the remaining peach halves into half cm slices and layer in rows on top of the sponge mixture. Scatter over the remaining crumble mixture. Put in the oven for about 45-50 minutes or until the cake is nicely browned on top and a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack. Fantastic served warm with a dollop of yogurt or crème fraîche as a pud, or on its own at teatime.

A Bristol operetta society is to perform the enchanting Iolanthe in April, with an opportunity to meet the fairies! Brought to you by the same team who created Ruddigore at Kings Weston House in 2017, Bristol Gilbert and Operatic Society presents the delightfully witty Iolanthe at the Redgrave Theatre in April. First performed at the Savoy Theatre in 1881, and currently being revived by the ENO at the Coliseum, this eighth collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan is regarded by many as their finest and most perfect collaboration. Iolanthe drops members of the House of Lords into the middle of an inspired forest enchanted by fairies and ruled by a no-nonsense Fairy Queen. Strephon, son of the beloved eponymous Iolanthe, is sent into Parliament as a Fairy Member when the Lord Chancellor and his colleagues spurn his affections for his darling Phyllis. And do you know where the term fairy lights originally comes from? It was in Iolanthe’s opening run at the Savoy that the fairies wore tiny lights in their headdresses and the phrase fairy lights was born! “Iolanthe has the strongest blend of dialogue and music of any other collaboration between this remarkable duo,” says musical director Ben England, returning for a third year with the society, “the Lord Chancellor’s patter song is regarded as the most demanding and elaborate in the repertoire, together with some astonishing and challenging chorus numbers which our top-notch cast will dash off with a flourish!”
Show director Hannah Coleman said “After the success of Ruddigore last year, we’ve continued to build on our tradition of a talented, active chorus, and Iolanthe is the perfect vehicle for them to shine. I could not be more excited to see how the brilliant performers that make up our cast principals and chorus make this show their own.” Marianne Murray, chair of BGSOS, said “in putting on Iolanthe, we know that our audiences demand something special, so expect to see spells being cast with fire and brimstone, ethereal lighting effects, and of course those headdresses complete with fairy lights. This year we are welcoming some very young fairies and peers to our cast to contribute to the magic!” Gala Night, where audience members can share in a glass of something whimsical with the cast is Wednesday night and includes a pre-show talk on the production. So why not release your inner fairy and come and join us for the ride! BGSOS is performing Iolanthe 18th – 21st April 2018, with a matinee performance on Saturday 21st April, where children are especially invited, with an opportunity to meet the cast afterwards and have your photo taken with a real fairy! Tickets are available from www.bristolgsos.com Our land of the fairies awaits your attendance!

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club Following cancelation of the final indoor game of the winter, scheduled for March 3rd against Severnvale ---- it was a victim of the Beast From The East and Storm Emma which closed the Indoor Arena ---- it was good to bring bowlers, families and friends together for a quiz on March 11th. Part of the series of Sunday evening social events it was a very enjoyable event with Gordon Dimond once again devising it and asking the one hundred questions to test the six teams taking part. After much deliberation and whispering of answers the team with no name ----- Dave and Jenny Povey, Shirley Callaghan and Brian Mounter came out on top with seventy eight correct answers --- very well done to them. There was time for a game of killer on the skittle alley and that saw one player taking part who had never played the game before ---- great fun and a new experience for her!! There was a winner ---- Harry Bridgeman ---- well played to him. The final social evening will be on Sunday April 8th and that will once again feature a quiz alongside another chance to the very frustrating but equally fun Beetle Drive when throwing a six can be so difficult!! The long awaited 2018 outdoor bowling season will be underway with a visit to Wrington On Wednesday 11th April. This fixture has become the curtain raiser in recent seasons ---- always a challenge playing on the all- weather surface but no less enjoyable being on a green under the sky once more.
18
Friday 13th April --- hopefully not unlucky --- will see the green re-open for the season and there is a plan to fly the new club flag for the first time that day. Bowlers will have waited a long time for this day and hopefully some of them will be there with woods to celebrate the opening day in style. Two days later Bristol Arrow will be the visitors for the season’s first home mixed friendly game. The Gloucestershire Men’s Competition Fixtures have now been published for 2018 and City and Port Men will play the preliminary round of the Two Rink Competition at home to Tewkesbury B in June. David Hinksman has been drawn away against Pete Cross of Kingswood and Hanham in the preliminary round of the Champion of Champions, also in June. The Tuesday evening sessions for new bowlers and practice for existing ones commence on April 17th at 6pm. If you have never played bowls but would like to try it then this is for you. Free of charge, all equipment supplied and experienced bowlers on hand to offer help and advice you have nothing to lose and lots to gain. Bowling is a healthy outdoor activity where you can meet lots of people and make friends. If you like it and decide to join there is a free club shirt for you. For further information about the club, its activities and how to join ---- call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

A Myth about Marketing your Business In my last two articles I explained why it is important to have a good online reputation that is visible to those searching for a business like yours and how your competitor could be legally stealing referrals that should have come your way. In this final article I’d like to advise you what to be wary of when considering a marketing agency for local online marketing. I’d also like to dispel what I think is probably the biggest myth when it comes to marketing your local business online. That myth? You need to be on the first page of Google and at the top of the rankings for the terms people use to find a business like yours. Not necessarily you don’t – but marketing agencies will still tell you that so that they can sell you relatively expensive monthly SEO services. These days people look at the Google Maps listing when they search for a local business. And for the majority, it is so that they can get a good side-by-side comparison and look for what is most important. A good reputation. Of course, it is nice to come higher up in the listings as it will give you some prominence, but in general if you are anywhere in the main display page your reputation will set you apart, or not, as the case may be.
These are one-off costs, either in terms of cash or your time, but with these fundamentals in place and a regular review collection strategy you may well find you’ve already outstripped your competition and don’t need to do anything else.
However, I know it can seem somewhat arduous or Now the criteria that Google uses when it comes to even daunting trying to get people to leave reviews. position you is a closely guarded secret. Six tips for networking at business events- St Swithins Style
Regardless of the power of online networking, good networking techniques at live events remind us again and again that there’s no substitute for getting face-to-face with business people – provided we play our cards right. With that in mind, I would urge all of us to observe the following networking practices. In this article we’ll review suggestions for networking at business events. Regardless of the power of online networking, good networking techniques at live events reminds us again and again that there’s no substitute for getting face-toface with business people – provided we play our cards right. With that in mind, I would urge all of us to observe the following networking practices. Mingle, don’t cluster. My experience is that when people from the same workplace attend a business event they make the mistake of hanging together, rather than doing the hard work of mingling with strangers and turning them into acquaintances. You can talk to your office mates any time. Even those who are solo practitioners are prone to cluster with the first couple of people they meet and never advance beyond.
I don’t think so. Don’t show up famished. Eat something before you arrive if you’re hungry. Brush your teeth and freshen your breath. Eat while the event is drawing to a close, or grab a to-go plate. Keep it short, but never abrupt. You want to touch down, make contact, exchange some key information with your high-value targets and move on. Just don’t be abrupt or you’re likely to offend people by creating the impression that you deemed them unworthy of your time and are bolting for greener pastures. You can avoid this situation by striking an agreement with your new contact to get in touch to schedule a coffee meeting so you can spend more time talking business. Keep business cards separated. Put the ones you hand out in one pocket and the cards you collect in another. If you mix your business cards with the ones you collect you’ll end up shuffling a deck before long. This gives people the wrong impression – that you’re an indiscriminate and serial collector of business cards. And you’re disorganized. Introduce people to one another. This is a powerful technique. You become a connector. And if you hang around awhile and observe the conversation you just ignited, you’re likely to be surprised and enriched by the information you pick up just by listening.
Don’t wander aimlessly. Always try to get the attendee list prior to the event. That gives you an opportunity to review the list and target the people you want to meet and do business with. If the list is not available, it’s a good idea to spend your first five minutes surveying and assessing the crowd, figuring out who you want to approach. In other words, have a game plan rather than just letting things happen as they may. If you get to an event early keep an eye on the entrance and catch high-value people as they arrive. Most event planners neglect to have greeters at the door, and people will appreciate somebody who extends a hand and says, “C’mon, I’ll walk you to the bar. The food can wait. You cannot effectively network with a drink in one hand and a plate of food in the other. How do you shake hands? How do you exchange business cards? Do you think people want to watch you chomping on food and showing off your dental work while trying to explain what you do for a living?

www.techvolution.co.uk Do URGENT Jobs Steal Your Time? Urgent is defined as “requiring immediate action or attention”. We all get them, but do you seem to get . too many of them? The question to ask yourself is “Why has everything seemingly become urgent”? Urgent is often an overused term in business. It’s a bit like the word Accident, the definition for which is “an event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause”. Only a very small percentage of car crashes are truly “accidents”. Most of them are driver stupidity in one form or another. So, the endless list of URGENT jobs people have, normally relates to a state of general disorganisation. How do you manage your tasks? Starting with the Orange circle and ending with the Green circle, do you run around chasing tasks as they crop up like in Fig. 1, or do you plan them out and get them done in the most efficient order (Fig. 2). FIG. 1 FIG 2
If the length of the arrows represents time to sort out and complete the tasks, when properly ordered, it takes one third of the time to complete all nine tasks. Planning and organising means you get three times as much done. As a result, your list of so called “Urgent jobs” will massively
