Your garden in March
Spring is finally here! The warmer and sunnier days during March provide the oppurtunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It’s a great time of the year as new life bursts forth and the garden begins to transform. Preparation of seed beds and borders should be well under the way this month as well as cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up the mess that the winter has left behind. Whether you’re preparing for shrubs and bedding plants or sowing seed for vegtables. Once all the tidying is done you’ll be in a better postion to plan the seasons planting. Plant of the Month Pansy/Viola
The essential gardening jobs for March
Sow seeds and plant onion sets, shallots and potatoes As the soil begins to warm you can start to sow broad beans, salads and sweet peas. If bad weather is forecast, be sure to cover seedlings with clothes to protect them. March is also the time to plant out onion and shallot sets – cover with fleece or netting to protect from birds. Early varieties of potato such as ‘Rocket’ and ‘swift’ , can be planted. If they have been kept in a light and frost-free environments, they should be ‘chitting’ (a slight sprouting from seed potato). Chitting before planting can encourage earlier and heavier cropping.
8
Feed As the warmer weather promotes fresh growth, a general garden fertiliser should be applied to help boost roots, green foliage and encourage more fruits and flowers from your plants. It can be applied around the base of plants by scattering straight from the box and left to be watered in the rain. Unfortunately, the warm weather will also see weeds start to grow as well. Weeding isn’t the most popular of jobs but its best to pull any that start to appear while they are young to prevent spreading. Scarify the lawn Do some lawn preparations before the growing season gets well under way. Choose a dry day and give the lawn a rake to remove the remnants of winter before cutting with the mower blades set at the highest position. Then aerate with a garden fork or aeration machine. This helps drainage and gets oxygen to the roots. Finally, apply a top dressing of spring lawn feed to add nutrients.
Why Should you plant them? One of the most popular bedding plants, pansies and violas are hardy annuals that have a stunning array of colours to choose from. Bringing the joy of spring to your garden during the colder months, they grow happily in borders or containers as well as providing great ground cover. How should you plant them? Plant them in moist, well-drained soil in a spot with good sunlight to encourage flowering. tough little plants that are extremly hardy, they prefer cooler temperatures and need watering regularly. They are also very versatile - plant them in beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets

Let’s not waste our world The shocking pictures of a seal with a frisbee caught around its neck that was slowly strangling it and starving it as it grew clearly demonstrate the message of Blue Planet 2 about the harmful effects of plastic in our oceans and on our planet in general. Luckily, the seal was rescued and after five months’ treatment, Frisbee as she was named, lolloped back down the sandy beach into the sea. Don’t we all wish that rescuing the Earth could be achieved in a similar timescale. Although individually we may feel that we can do little to affect the vast amounts of plastic pollution, there are steps we can take as families that will have an impact. Avoiding plastic bottles and using refillable ones are one example; keeping a folding bag for groceries rather than buying 5p plastic bags that are doing so much harm is another. There is a strong campaign to stop the use of plastic straws and there are other campaigns that are targeting excessive packaging. The Government has a ‘Plastic Waste Plan’ – did you know? Me neither. Environmental pressure groups claim that it does not go far enough, and we all need to do more to protect our fragile planet. David Attenborough would agree. Of the aforementioned plastic bags, 2/3 end up in landfill or are burned, 8 million, yes, 8 million are dumped in the sea EVERY YEAR.
It is matched by food that is wasted, this time in the supermarkets’ supply chains. In an age when families are going hungry and having to go to Food Banks, fruit and vegetable farmers have to waste up to 37,000 tonnes of produce every year because it isn’t the right shape/size or colour. This could feed 25,000 people with the recommended five portions a day for a year. It is a disgrace that people go hungry in Britain; it is a disgrace that farmers are forced to over produce to meet supermarket buyers’ orders or risk losing the contract. Things are changing gradually; supermarkets are passing food they would have previously thrown out as it reaches its sell-by date to foodbanks. Tesco has introduced a “wonky fruit and veg’ section, it is also aiming to end edible fruit waste. Iceland is working to end plastic packaging and other supermarkets are under pressure to follow suit, We must all do our bit to reduce plastic waste, for the sake of Frisbee the seal and all the other animals and birds who suffer horrific deaths because humans can’t be bothered to change their habits. It may be less convenient, it does require some forethought to refill your reuseable bottle or to pack a non plastic bag when you go shopping.

The top 3 movies For March Take a trip down to Cineworld this March and it’s highly likely you’ll be greeted by all out action. Every blockbuster release covered this month relates in some way to gaming, meaning there’s never been a better time to ‘level up’ your movie-going experience, with virtual worlds, archaeological adventures, giant robots hitting the big screen. Kicking us off midway through the month on March 16th, gaming icon Lara Croft makes her long-awaited movie return. This time played by Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander, this slightly grittier take on the titular Tomb Raider sees Lara journey to the lost kingdom of Yamatai to finish what her father started. Fast-forward one week later and it’s mechs and monsters galore as we step back into the world of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim. Subtitled ‘Uprising’, this super-charged sequel follows John Boyega leading a new generation of jaeger pilots against the alien menace in the hope of protecting Earth once and for all. Rounding off the month on March 29th is the highly-anticipated movie adaptation of Ernest Cline’s best-selling novel: Spielberg’s Ready Player One. Set in a world where the virtual one is the only escape, unlimited riches await those who embark on the journey to win the ultimate Easter egg hunt. Just be sure to bring your 80s references with you! Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine once again team up to give cinema audiences a chance to win movie goodies just go to www.facebook. com/directlocal and enter the latest competiton. Game on everybody. There’s plenty of reasons to strap into your cinema seat this March.

Easter Cream Egg cake
1. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line the base of a 23cm springform tin with baking parchment. Place the bourbon biscuits in a food processor and blitz until reduced to fine crumbs. Mix the melted butter and biscuit crumbs together, then press firmly onto the base of the tin with the back of a spoon. Bake in the oven for 10 mins then leave to cool while you make the filling.
Ingredients For the base
250g chocolate bourbon biscuits 100g butter, melted plus extra for greasing
For the filling
3x 280g packs full-fat cream cheese at room temperature (we used Philadelphia) 200g golden caster sugar 4 tbsp cocoa powder 1 vanilla pod, seeds only 3 tbsp strong black coffee 3 large eggs 300ml pot sour cream 25g milk chocolate, melted
For the decoration 200ml double cream 100g passion fruit curd 8 creame eggs
(4 halved, 4 left whole)
2. Turn oven temperature up to 240C/220C fan/gas 9. In a large bowl beat the cream cheese and sugar with an electric whisk until creamy, then add in the cocoa, vanilla, coffee, eggs, soured cream and the melted chocolate and whisk again until smooth. 3. Brush the sides of a cake tin with a little more melted butter then pour in the cheesecake mixture and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 10 mins, then turn the heat down to 110C/90C fan/gas 1/4 for 25-30 mins. When ready the filling should be set, but with a little wobble in the middle. Turn off the oven, but leave the oven door open and allow it to cool in there for 2 hrs. Chill until ready to serve. 4. To decorate the cheesecake, carefully remove it from the tin and removed the lining paper from the base. Lightly whip the double cream and place or pipe 4 large dollops of it on top of the cheesecake in a ring with 4 smaller dollops in between. Top each mound of cream with a smaller splodge of passion fruit curd and then top with the cream egg halves then place the whole ones in between. Serve immediately.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club Sunday 28th January saw the start of another very enjoyable Winter Bowling Break at the Toorak Hotel in Torquay. Twenty nine bowlers, family and friends gathered for five days of bowling at the hotels four rink indoor arena, playing eight, two hour games against local and visiting opposition. The break is very much about relaxation, having fun and making the most of what the hotel complex and the surrounding area has to offer --- but, it is always good to win games of bowls. This year saw the City and Port win five of the eight games played. The week started well with victory over Buckfastleigh and Ipplepen on Monday. Wins over Babbacombe, Victoria and Torbay followed. The only losing games were against West Backwell and one of these was by just three shots. The break was not only about bowling ---- there was plenty of time to swim in the Aztec Pool, have a sauna or to relax in the Jacuzzi. The snooker and pool tables saw lots of action and there was the usual, very popular Ten Pin Bowling evening. This year’s Ten Pin Bowling Winners were ---- Dee Crawley and Pete Gibson ---- well done to them. There was once again a good programme of entertainment and the chance to be a winner at Bingo each evening. Away from the hotel there was time to explore Torquay or take the bus or train to go a little further afield ---- some of the party were spotted in far off Newton Abbott!!
18
At the end of the break there were winners and prizes won. Based upon aggregate scores from four games played Gordon Dimond was top man and Dee Crawley top lady. There were also prizes for the members of the rink winning by the greatest margin and this was in the game against Victoria when Dee Crawley, Gordon Dimond, Gill Hinksman and Steve Reed came out in front by 24 shots to 7. This year’s joint organisers were Gill Hinksman and Dee Crawley and they were presented with a thank you gift by Shirley Parker on behalf of the touring party at the end of the Thursday evening prize giving ceremony. Sunday February 11th saw forty bowlers, family and friends gather in the club skittle alley for an enjoyable evening of bingo and skittles organised by Lis Davies.
After the excitement of bingo ---- some tense moments when that final elusive number is needed ----- it was down to a game of killer on the skittle alley and some great shots alongside those when the ball somehow misses an entire frame of pins. The winner ---- still two lives left --- was Steve Reed. The next social event will be on Sunday March 11th and this will be a quiz ---- thinking caps on for this one --- it will start at 7.30pm in the Skittle Alley. The Pre-Season Meeting will be on Thursday 15th March, in the ballroom at 7.30 for 7.45pm. If you would like further information about joining or to know more about the clubs activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

The Changing Face Of Referral Marketing Traditionally and for good reason, business owners cherish people referred from their existing customers as they are already pre-disposed towards them. In fact, research has shown that around 92% will trust a business that has been referred to them. Indeed, savvy business would ask for referrals from happy customers as they knew that his would help when making contact for the first time. And that still works today. However, the internet has brought a shift in the way that prospective customers find out about businesses before they make a purchase. No longer is the “power” with businesses to tell prospects about themselves and the good things others say about them. The internet has transferred that “power” to consumers. Hence, word-of-internet has become almost as powerful as word-of-mouth. Research shows that around 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as word-of-mouth. But the real change is what consumers do after being referred a business. We wondered about this, so had our own independent survey carried out. The results really surprised us. Amazingly, nearly 90% went online to find out more about the business they had been referred, but only a third were just looking for the website and contact information. The vast majority went online to find reviews.
Three-quarters of consumers think that reviews older than 3 months are not really relevant. On average consumers need to see 7 positive reviews to start to trust a business There’s no doubt about it. The internet really has changed the face of referral marketing. Business today need to ensure that they are not having their referrals legally stolen by businesses that have built up a significant online reputation.
I suppose we shouldn’t have been surprised, but it did really drive home how much impact the internet now has on referral marketing campaigns because, when people go online to research a business, review sites will alert them to competitors. What surprised us even more was that it wasn’t the businesses coming high in the search engines that were gaining customers, or even those with the cheapest price. It was the most reputable businesses that were profiting.
The key to building up a great online reputation? UK research company Bright Local carries out an Just ask your happiest customers. Not everybody annual survey in consumer research habits. Here’s will leave a review, but over time you will build up a what they had to say. valuable asset.

Here are the‘top six’ tips for effective speed management brought to us at Direct Local thanks to The TTC Group, which there clients tell us have been most useful in helping them to stay safe and legal: 1. Use your gears to stay in control Selecting a lower gear will help you manage your speed in built-up areas, because engine braking will help to hold the vehicle back and prevent it running away from you. Try 3rd gear for 30mph and, for those challenging 20mph limits, give 2nd a try. Modern engines use fuel-injection systems controlled by computer, meaning you won’t use more fuel.
5. If you’re towing, you should be slowing! If you are towing anything, whether it’s a small box trailer, a boat, or a caravan, you will be subject to lower speed limits on a national speed limit section of road. For a single carriageway road, that’s a maximum of 50mph, and for a dual carriageway, that’s 60mph. It’s worth remembering that these lower limits also apply to the majority of vans and to minibuses – important if you need to hire one. If you are towing on a motorway, your maximum speed is set at 60mph.
6. Give yourself time One of the biggest causes of speeding is time pressure, or running late. Allow yourself that ‘safety margin’ of extra time, so you don’t feel pressured into breaking the law and risking speeding fines, points, or worse. Remember that a smooth, progressive drive within the speed limit uses up to 2. Look out for street lights 25% less fuel. And speed limits are just If you can see a system of street lights (that’s three that – limits, not targets. There will be many or more), then the speed limit is 30mph. They can occasions when the limit just isn’t appropriate, and be lights on telegraph poles or strip lighting in you’ll need to adjust your speed accordingly. tunnels, and they don’t have to be switched on. Don’t worry about the space between them, either – 3 or more and it’s a system. If there are no streetlights, then it’s national speed limit (remember, that will vary depending on the type of road and the vehicle you are driving). This rule applies to all road types, apart from motorways. If the speed limit is anything different, it must be signed – because signs overrule streetlights. 3. A dual carriageway is nothing to do with the number of lanes Yes, you did read that correctly. A dual carriageway is defined by the fact that it must have a physical separation between the two opposing carriageways. That can be grass, infill, concrete or metal barriers, or just a raised kerb down the middle. You can have one or more lanes in either direction, but the presence of two lanes alone does not constitute a dual carriageway. Our American cousins use the term ‘divided highway’, and that’s a pretty accurate description of a dual carriageway here in the UK. 4. A dual carriageway with street lights is limited to 30mph Again, not a typo! Unless there are signs telling you otherwise, the speed limit will be 30mph – remember the streetlight rule. If the limit was anything different, there would be signs to tell you this. Many drivers forget that the streetlight rule applies to dual carriageways too, and are caught out because the road ‘looks faster’.
