Your garden in August
After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry to much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.
The essential gardening jobs for A ugust Take herb cutting
August is the ideal month to take cutting woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.
Pruning and tidying
Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.
8
Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.
Make plans for next year
A nice relaxing job for those hot days! Pull up a chair in a sunny spot and start planning for next year. Make sketches of your flower borders and vegetable plot and list what you want to plant. Take photos of your garden now while it is looking its best – if you want to rearrange in the winter its much easier to do if you have a reference point. Also think about what bulbs you want to plant for that early display of spring colour – bulbs are usually available to buy from the end of August ready for autumn planting.
Enjoy your garden!
Looking good this month….
Hydrangea
Why should you plant them? Hydrangeas are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. They are easy to care for, fully hardy and have an old fashioned, cottage style charm. How should you plant them? Hydrangeas like moist, free draining soil and a partially shaded sheltered spot.

There are lots of different types of plaster available and only an experienced plasterer will understand Making it Look Easy the advantages and disadvantages of each different product to use. What is Plastering?
In it’s simplest form, plastering is an internal way of making your wall have a sealed finish ready for paint and a decorative finish. Rendering is a way of Strengthening and sealing the exterior walls of a house with a cement or lime based product designed to dry quickly. Even this shortened statement does not provide a complete picture of what plastering and rendering does, however, as it One of the many misconceptions people have about can be used for a variety of other purposes as well. plastering is that it is easy. This is actually far from the truth. There is much to know about how to The Multiple Purposes of Plastering plaster including what kind of plaster to use for a given surface, how thick to spread the render or While the original purpose of render was to plaster and how to make the right designs. While it is strengthen walls and to prevent weather from something almost anyone can learn how to do it its getting inside the exterior wall , it has hence grown best to consult the professionals at A and L Building into both a craft and to a degree an art form. City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club Bowling on a green is a game for all seasons and there cannot be a greater illustration of that than the two games played between City and Port of Bristol and Wrington this season. The first game of the season was at Wrington on April 11th and ---- it was cold. Even the hardy Wrington folk said so. They play all year round on their all weather green and at least one of their number said on April 11th ---- this is colder than the winter!! So--- what a contrast when they came to Shirehampton on July 4th --- one of the hottest days of the year --- yes --- it was hot. But --- the main thing is that --- whatever the temperature ---- the bowling was enjoyed. The Ladies League Team has continued to impress --- maintaining a top three position in Bristol Ladies League Division Two for much of the season. Friday July 6th saw not only a win over Portishead RBL but also a remarkable event when, on the eighth end of the eighteen played the rink skipped by Dawn Evans there was a Hot Shot ---- eight City and Port woods closer to the jack than the nearest of the visitors woods. This is a real achievement and entitles all four members of the rink to a Hot Shot Badge and certificate. Ray Cook was lead, Lis Davies played at number two and Julie Looker was number three --- very well done to them.
Beating the opposition has not been a big problem for the Ladies League Team this season but on Friday 13th July they were defeated by the weather. Torrential rain and thunder put paid to their home game against Yate A and they shared the points without bowling a ball when the green became unplayable. The clubs newest recruit, Howard Surman has now made his Bristol and District Men’s League Debut following several appearances in Mixed Friendly Games. The Men’s League Team recorded an excellent 8-2 win away to Keynsham C on Thursday July 12th to move a little further up the league table. The club now has three qualified stage one coaches. After several weeks of instruction Bill Hatherall, Gill and David Hinksman were successful when tested on July 12th at the green in Nibley Road, Shirehampton. Stage two will follow, but not until season 2019. Once qualified at that level they will be able to coach without external support --- a valuable asset to the club. There is a new trophy to be presented at the club this season. The Presidents Cup This is to be contested between last seasons Ladies and last year’s Men’s four wood singles champions. So it was on Saturday June 30th that Dawn Evans and David Hinksman played a game --- first to 21 shots to decide who would be the first holder of the new trophy and therefore the club champion. It was an excellent game of bowls with some very good ends and good bowling overall. In the end, having bowled 21 ends David Hinksman came out in front by 21 shots to 17 --- but, it really was close and a very good game of bowls. The season runs until the end of September, so --there is still time to come and see if bowling is for you. Call Lis Davies on 0117 9380408 to arrange a free trial session on a Tuesday evening at 6pm. All equipment is supplied and there are experienced bowlers on hand to offer help and advice. Reduced price membership is now available for this season.

Leadership – The UK has never stood in Greater Need of Strong and Stable Leadership Leadership is a funny thing, it is a word we have come to use a lot recently. Perhaps it is because Theresa May kept repeating that she and her party would provide “strong and stable leadership” before last year’s General Election over the looming Brexit negotiations. These have been revealed to be sham – there is no plan for the EU to agree or to disagree with, it is made up and changed every week. Yet Brexiters keep blaming the European Union for sticking to the line that “you voted to leave this club, so you cannot use the facilities”. Since visiting the National Memorial Arboretum recently on my way ‘Up North’, and comparing the shambles we have now with the leadership of our country in both World Wars, I have been giving this a lot of thought. Firstly, let me recommend that you visit the Arboretum with your family if breaking your journey for a couple of hours; it offers a fascinating insight into the similarities and difference of both World War periods.
Above all, it demonstrates what a country united in its aims and well led can achieve; all elements who contributed from the Land Girls and W.I.s to the Bletchley Park Code Breakers via all branches of the UK’s Armed Forces and our allies the Polish Nation are immortalised there. Particularly moving – it moved me to tears that I couldn’t hold back on reading the individual memorials –was the ‘Shot at Dawn’ memorial of the Conscientious Objectors. There is a single statue of a 16 year old who joined up early to serve his country, was clearly suffering Traumatic Stress Disorder from the battles and the sights he must have witnessed (not Post Traumatic, after all he was still in the middle of it all) surrounded by posts recording the others shot by our side at dawn.

History has judged and it has come down on the side that they were right, and the remote Generals in their Chateaux 20 miles or so behind the Front Line were wrong to butcher a whole generation of ordinary men and women who gave their lives for the country, but who hoped to survive.
Compare that with now; granted the challenge of leaving the alliance that is the EU will not kill people as directly as war does. But in the UK, families and children are reliant on food banks, including in well-off cities like Bristol. Recent forecasts of life post-EU are that essential food and drink items and other basics of daily life will go up and may even be rationed if UK crashes out with No deal. Most families can live a month or two if one or other wage earner loses their job, but then the bills start to mount at a frightening rate. And the ‘Generals’ those who promised that life would be better for ordinary folk are reneging on their promises; they won’t suffer at ALL. Jacob Rees Mogg has moved two of his investment funds to Ireland, he promises we will be better off after 50 years – I bet his baby son Sixtus will be promising the same another 50 years hence. Another Tory Grandee is advising people to move their resources to Malta and even Nigel Farage is hedging his bets by applying for joint German –British citizenship. They won’t suffer, but we ordinary, less well- off people are likely to; this is the obvious parallel with the Generals of both World Wars. The wealthy Establishment figures do not pay the price of their bad advice.
And this is so unfair for Bristol the only city apart from London that contributes to the Treasury; we voted by a large majority to remain in the EU. ‘Remainers’ are ignored by Theresa May and her Government, yet the Referendum has been shown to have been corrupted by breaking Electoral Law and by Russian influence of national and social media. Picture our city in several years’ time when Airbus has moved to Europe as it is doing, Rolls Royce and BAe to follow with the impact upon supply chain and independent businesses in our city. Far from being a net contributor, we will be asking for assistance from Government. Who will lead the UK back to faith in our democratic systems? Who will heal the deep wounds in our society that Brexit has caused? I don’t see a strong and stable Leader emerging and that is truly worrying, whichever side you are on.
