Your garden in May

Spring is well under the way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Plant of the month Geranium

The essential gardening jobs for May Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

8

If you have already own tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Why should you plant them? Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

Here We Go Around in Circles Again; Bristol City Council Reintroduces Sunday and Bank Holiday Parking Charges Have you been into town recently? Noticed the number of empty shops in The Galleries, Cabot Circus and elsewhere? And virtually every month another well known shopping brand goes into liquidation? Recent news is that Debenhams is having financial problems, the dividend to its Shareholders has been halved (boo-hoo) and it is having to continually offer sales and discount stock to attract customers to part with their hard earned cash – Hooray! Next isn’t doing very well either. Never mind, Greggs is expanding –yum. Poundshops are everywhere. What does this say about shopping in town centres? Basically, people are not feeling well off, they are looking for value-for-money and tightening their belts. The growth in online shopping is also hitting City Centre shops hard. The only retailer that seems to be doing well is John Lewis and their store is situated at the Mall in South Gloucestershire In response to this picture of City Centre shopping habits, Bristol is re-introducing parking charges on Sundays, now a big shopping day, and Bank Holidays. These charges were abolished in 2012 to encourage shoppers and just people to wander into the city centre at weekends.

The Council also hasn’t altered by one iota it’s policy of encouraging its citizens to change their stubborn clinginess to their cars and take public transport or to take up cycling. Of course, this combination of exhortation and punitive measures have been going on for many years, but we stubborn Bristolians still cling to our cars. Motorists are an easy cash cow for the Council to milk, so let’s continue. There are good reasons why Bristolians haven’t dramatically changed their transport habits, despite charges, congestion and roadworks. One is the unreliability of public transport. FOSBR (Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways) have called a public meeting just this week on the unreliability of the Severn Beach line following many unheard and unresponded to complaints about cancellation of trains. Since ‘new’ trains were recycled by GWR from Thames valley, the service has got even worse! And don’t let’s start on Metrobus, except to point out that there are more opportunities to fine motorists who wander over into the bus lanes. But it’s alright; Councillors and Aldermen on the Council can park for free in College Green car park. ”Do as I say, not as I do”. When Bristol loses its good shops as it has John Lewis, and becomes a centre of empty retail units and cheap outlets – nothing against them but we need variety – will the circle go around again and parking fees be abolished or reduced? We can dream..

The top 3 movies For May

Solo Whether you’re in the mood for revisiting a galaxy far, far away with an old friend, unexpected bonds between mother and baby-sitter, or the return of Marvel’s self-aware Merc with a Mouth, there’s something for everyone hitting the silver screens at Cineworld this May. Yes, the sun might finally be out, but it’s really the cinemas where things are heating up. Kicking us off on May 4th is Charlize Theron’s Tully, a new comedy-drama which has already got critics excited due to an overwhelming reception at this year’s Sundance festival. Theron plays mother of three Marlo, a woman who finds herself challenged by the unlikely bond she builds with the introduction of a young nanny known as Tully. Slap bang in the middle of May on the 15th is the supercharged sequel Deadpool 2. Promising more R-rated action, plenty of sharp-edged humour, along with a much grander sense of scale this time around, the X-Force will need to overcome their comedic differences to help protect a young mutant from Josh Brolin’s time-traveling soldier Cable. Finally, rounding us out for the month on May 24th is the origin story of the Star Wars’ resident smuggler in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Han and his team are challenged with pulling off the biggest heist of the century right from under the eyes of the empire. Pro Wrestlinfg Chaoss and Direct Local Magazine similarly team up once more to give viewers a chance to win 2 free tickets the next event. Just fill out the next page crossword. Balance your fun in the sun with fun in the cinema throughout the whole of May!

Gorgeous Cherry Cheesecake Ingredients

For the base 200g pack shortbread biscuits 50g melted butter For the cake 2 x 300g tub soft cheese, Philadelphia is good 1 tsp vanilla extract 175g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp plain flour 2 eggs For the topping 50g golden caster sugar 400g cherry, pitted

16

Instructions

Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Grease and line a loose-sided metal terrine tin (27 x 10cm, 7cm deep) or a similar size loaf tin with baking parchment. Tip the shortbread into a food processor and blitz into crumbs, then pour in the butter and continue to whizz until it’s the texture of smooth peanut butter. Press the shortbread mix into the base of tin. Beat the cheese, vanilla extract and sugar until smooth then beat in the flour and eggs until completely combined – this can be done by hand or in a food processor. Pour the mix over the biscuit base and smooth with a spatula. Bake for about 1 hr until just completely set and tinged brown at the edges. Leave to cool out of the fridge, then refrigerate until completely cold. While the cake is cooling sprinkle the sugar into a frying pan and place over a high heat until caramelised. Throw in the cherries and stew in the sugar for 3-4 mins until they are sticky and have released their juices, but haven’t collapsed too much. Leave to cool, then strain the cherry juice back into the pan. Place on a high heat and reduce the juice to a sticky syrup, set aside to cool. To serve, gently release the cake from the mould onto a board and leave at room temperature for 30 mins. Just before serving spoon the cherries over, drizzle with the syrup and cut into slices.

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club With the dark days of winter gone, the long awaited return to outdoor bowling finally came on Wednesday April 11th and a visit to Wrington for a game on the all- weather green that the host club plays on twelve months of the year ---- stopping only for snow and ice! Playing four rinks and eighteen ends on what was a chilly afternoon --- it was good to be playing in the open air once more and looking forward to many hours of bowling until the end of September. The host club ran out comfortable winners on the day but, as with all friendly games enjoyment gained from being there and taking part was much more important than the result. The City and Port of Bristol green opened on Friday 13th April ---- not at all unlucky --- and its opening was combined with a flying of the new club flag on the new flagpole. Raised by Master of the Flag Trevor Scanlon and toasted by fourteen bowlers, the flag flew over the green whilst the first woods of the new season were bowled by four very keen first day bowlers --- John Conroy, Eve Williams, David Garrod and David Hinksman. Greenkeeper John Swift has worked through the winter months to have the green ready and in good shape for the new season and it did look good when the first woods rolled on it. Much trimming of bushes, jet washing of the green surround, cleaning of club buildings, application of paint, removal of weeds and cutting of grass around the green perimeter --- all done by club members in the weeks leading up to the big re-start --- ensured that all was ready when the big day came.

The quiz winners --- almost a family affair ----Brian, Debbie and Robbie Mounter and Bill Hatherall was the fourth member of the successful team. The Beetle Drive ---- throwing a six can be incredibly difficult and some of the beetles were a very strange shape ---- and you have an ever changing playing partner ---- all very great fun. After six games the winner was Bill Hatherall who scored two hundred and eleven out of a possible two hundred and thirty four --- well beetled Bill!! This was the final Sunday evening social event ---all very enjoyable and all organised by Lis Davies. With the new season now underway there is much to look forward to including over forty mixed friendly games, eight ladies only friendly games, the summer tour – this year to the Isle-of Wight for the first time in ten years, another visit to Fry Island to play Island Bohemian, Monday night club league and club competitions. The Ladies will once again play in Division Two of the Bristol Ladies League as well as competing in the Top Club and Inter Club Competitions. The gents will once again play in division four of the Bristol and District League and compete in the GBA Two Rink competition. Dawn Evans will play Val Molton of Kingswood and Hanham in the Ladies Champion of Champions Competition. Coincidentally David Hinksman is also playing a member of Kingswood and Hanham --Pete Cross in the men’s Champion of Champions competition. Tuesday evenings for anyone to come along and try bowling ---- free of charge and all equipment supplied are running again this season. Commencing at 6pm and with experienced bowlers on hand to offer help and advice this is your chance to come along and see what bowling is about. All new full membership paying bowlers receive a free club shirt so --- why not come along and give it a try.

So ---- all was ready for the arrival of Bristol Arrow on Sunday 15th April and what an occasion it was. Not only the first home game of the season but also the first game with Merv May as week-end captain and the first time that the new flag was raised for a game with visiting opposition. Also notable was the appearance of returning bowlers Alan and Sally Coulstring – welcome back to them. An enjoyable afternoons bowling ended with Bristol Arrow coming out in front but it was good to renew acquaintances and to take part in a game memorable for its various firsts!! Before returning to the green for another season there was time for one more Sunday evening social event and this was on April 8th. More than thirty bowlers, family and friends gathered at the City and Port of Bristol Club for an evening of quiz, devised and presented once more by Gordon Dimond and another appearance of that most frustrating but For further information please call David Hinksman equally enjoyable of games ---- Beetle Drive. on 0117 9082713.

Controlling your Calendar

Last month we covered the benefits of planning and organisation to save time. The aim of this article is to provide some tips on how to do that.

We all have calendars – either on our smart phones or in a book. We also have lists – To-Do’s, and we still battle to get things done. The reason why some people manage to get so much more done than others is down to scheduling. This is where you allocate certain times in your diary or calendar on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to carry out certain tasks. The table below shows how a weekly / monthly calendar can have time scheduled for certain activities. This is an example for a company owner/manager who is client facing.

By structuring how you work your week, not being distracted and ensuring you keep to time you will find how much more productive your time is. Further, you will have the information to decide when you need to bring in another person to help you or make system improvements to do certain tasks quicker. It may be necessary to “bar” calls during certain times and use the scheduled Calls catch up time to deal with them. Just this little thing makes people massively more efficient in their time management. Try it – you may be pleasantly surprised

BRISTOL BREAKFAST NETWORKING TO SET UP IN THE NORTH OF THE CITY Independent business group Bristol

He said: “The group’s had an unprecedented level of growth over the past two years and, with 40 members meeting regularly, it’s not practical to have any more in one room.

Set up 18 years ago for the benefit of small business owners in Bristol area, the original group has enjoyed spectacular growth in membership over recent months and has reached capacity at its current home in Ashton Gate Stadium.

“Our model’s proving to be really attractive – we meet fortnightly rather than weekly, without much of the pressure and formality associated with some other networking organisations.

Breakfast Networking (BBN) has announced the launch of a new fortnightly meeting for the northern part of the city.

The group’s committee is now launching a new regular breakfast meeting at The Manor at Old Down Estate in Tockington in South Gloucestershire. It’s exciting news for the small business community in the northern part of Bristol, especially for those looking to forge connections and receive quality referrals to new clients and customers. The northern and southern BBN meetings are arranged for fortnightly breakfasts on alternate Thursday mornings, with the new group having its inaugural session on May 17th. The initial group is currently chaired by Matt Richardson, owner of corporate gifts firm Recognition Express.

“We’ve had so many enquiries from prospective members and we felt the time was right to launch Bristol Breakfast Networking north of the city.” BBN was founded by Chris Holloway, owner of Manor Printing Services in Wotton-under-Edge, and management accountant David Johnson back in 2000. Since then it has seen many millions of pounds in business passed between its members, including some £800,000 in the past 12 months alone. With a membership standing at 40 small business owners at the meetings, the turnover makes each seat at the breakfast meeting worth in excess of £20,000 in new business per year, with more being passed online.

What is GDPR? The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) demands all companies to adhere to strict processes and procedures while collecting and storing personal data of European Union (EU) citizens. It aims to strengthen data protection efforts for all residents of the EU, and also ease the regulatory environment for international trade by offering a uniform regulation throughout the EU. GDPR comes amid a backdrop of an increasing demand for data privacy and a global climate of fear over possible data vulnerabilities. Did you know that telephone systems have to abide by GDPR laws? When is the deadline to become GDPR compliant? This new law will come into force 25th May 2018, and will replace the archaic Data Protection Directive. While that still seems quite a while away there is a lot to do and this transition period will allow organisations to set in place processes that will help them manage information (data) flow more effectively. Make sure your telephone system is up to date when the changes to GDPR comes into affect. What is the scope of GDPR? GDPR does not apply to all organisational information, but only Personally Identifiable Information (PII). Again, the idea is that this personal data should be stored with the explicit consent of the user and should only be used for the purpose specified while obtaining data. Both data processors as well as data controllers are liable under GDPR. All companies within the EU are subject to this regulation, regardless of where the data is stored and processed. The jurisdiction of GDPR also covers businesses outside the EU which offer goods and services to EU residents. The business telephone system must be kept up to date where GDPR is concerned. What are the key provisions of GDPR? Privacy by design and default – GDPR needs organisations to include privacy in their processes and systems by design. This means that all the company software and systems should adhere to the key tenets of GDPR. For instance, the software should be able to completely erase personal data if required by the data subjects. These changes will also affect companies who could call, does your business incorporate telemarketing into it mix? Make sure your business telephone systems are up to date.

Right to be forgotten - Before we examine this provision, it’s worth recalling the story of Spanish resident Mario Costeja González. Back in 2009, the Spaniard began a five-year battle with Google when he discovered an incriminating story about himself from 1998. Costeja wanted Google to remove links to the story which were not relevant to his life anymore. With the help of the Spanish Agency of Data Protection, he knocked on the doors of the European Court of Justice which ultimately ruled in his favour. This decision underlined the importance of the ‘Right to be Forgotten’. Organisations cannot hold any data without prior approvals and need to have strict mechanisms in place to delete data if requested by users. If you are calling anyone from your telephone system, they must already be on your data base, or have given you permission to make contact. Right to Data Portability – GDPR allows data subjects to obtain and transfer personal data, from one data controller to another, in a safe and secure fashion. This provision allows individuals to leverage their personal data for their own benefit. Make sure your data is up to date RE: your telephone system. Explicit opt-in consent – GDPR strengthens the case for explicit opt-in consent from customers before using their personal data. Control over one’s personal data, a simmering issue in the US, is a big aspect of GDPR. Under the regulation, the data subject is completely in control of their own data. Organisations also need to make sure that they communicate clearly while asking for personal data and also clarify about its intended usage. You can use this oppotunity to update your telephone system with new features, don’t get caught out. Harsh non-compliance fines - The regulation places strict demands on businesses as non-compliance will result in penalties of up to 4% of worldwide turnover or 20 million Euros, depending upon the nature of violation. Make sure your business telephone system does not violate GDPR terms. Stricter rules for data breaches – Breach notification is another key provision of GDPR. Under this provisionFeature Articles, it will become mandatory for organisations to notify the data protection authority and customers within 72 hours of a data breach.
