St Marys Church news What is the key to happiness? Many of us wish we knew the answer! To help us all find our own answer to this important question, St Mary’s will be sponsoring ‘The Happiness Laboratory’, six sessions in the Tithe Barn this autumn. The sessions follow on DVD the progress of a group of people as they try to improve their own happiness. The expert opinions of a doctor, a psychologist and a faith leader are available to help them form their own views. The same material is available to us as we look together to find out what will work to increase our own happiness. The topics explored include gratitude, kindness, forgiveness, friends and family, body and soul and coping strategies. If you join in, you will have the opportunity to meet with people on a similar adventure and to learn from each other. Helen Johnson and Ian Bailey will lead the sessions on six Tuesdays at 7.00 to 8.30pm beginning on 3rd October (but excluding half term week, 24th October).
Also in September we will be having our Harvest Appeal and our Harvest Festival, the latter this year will be a Café Church at 10am on Sunday 17th September. We warmly welcome you along. We are pleased to let you know that we have a new student, Janey Hillier joining us at St Mary’s for 2 years as a Pioneer Minister. She is a student at Trinity College and will be starting at St Mary’s on 10th September when there will be a ‘bring and share lunch’ to welcome her. Do bring along a plate of food to share and join in welcoming her. Messy Church – a great time for children of refreshments, crafts, story and worship (at least one adult per family please) – will be resuming this month and will be 3.30pm – 5.00pm on Thursday 21st September. And some advanced notice, that on Sunday 8th October there will be no Kids’ Klub Service as our whole congregation will be joining together for an informal service of Holy Communion for all. This is something new that we are trying out so do come along and try it out with us. Hope to see you!
The sessions are free and open to anyone, but we do need you to sign up in advance for attending all six sessions, so that we can buy the necessary personal workbooks for you. You can pop in and find out more about The Happiness Laboratory on Saturday 23rd September in the Tithe Barn, anytime between 10am and 12noon. We will be showing a short video (10 min every 30min) and can answer your questions then. You can sign up there and then or by e-mailing us at stmarysshirehampton@outlook.com .

The month of August saw two club competitions played and winners decided on the day of play. The two wood pairs --- when twelve bowlers were drawn from the hat into six pairs took place on Saturday August 5th. The winning pair --- Ken Davies and Phil Cormack finished just two points in front of Trevor Scanlon and Nick Burand. The Jack Ashton Triples ---- named after a Club President who held office from 1987-90, was played on Sunday August 20th. Five teams of three --- drawn so as to create teams of varying experience and ability--- each played four games of five ends with two points awarded for a win and one for a draw. Once again there was a close finish with Mervyn May, Dee Crawley and Julie Looker finishing the afternoon just two points clear of David Hinksman, Ken Grimes and Natalie Looker. These are the only club competitions that are decided on the one day they are played. All others will conclude on Finals Days --- this year over the week-end September 9th and 10th. A highlight of the clubs season it is hoped that there will once again be some well contested close finishes.
Contrast Ken’s story with that of Natalie Looker --the youngest member of the club, in her early 30s. Natalie came to the green first with her mum Julie, who joined last season, and eventually, after many roll ups, became a member in August. She made her debut in a mixed friendly game at Severnvale on August 6th and has since played more mixed friendlies, ladies only and a club competition.
The Ladies Bristol and District League season has now ended for this season and City and Port of Bristol finished in a creditable fifth place in Division Two. Captain Gill Hinksman was pleased to finish half way in what is a highly competitive league. The men’s Bristol and District League concluded for the season on Thursday 24th August and it was a good end to the season with a 7-3 home win against Begbrook Green B. Bowling is a game that people of all ages can enjoy. The club now has two members who have reached the age of 90. Don Barnes was first to reach the landmark --- latest to do it is Ken McCullock who is still playing regularly and still enjoying the game of bowls. He has been playing for the club since the early 1980s.
The season is drawing to a close --- but there is still plenty more bowling to be enjoyed before the final game on October 1st__ at home to GB Britton. Finals Days and Presidents Day are seasonal highlights still to come in September. For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713.

THE WORD ON THE STREET Austerity? When did we lose the notion that taxes were a safety net for our people? By Eileen Means Once upon a time, not so long ago and still in living memory, there was the belief that the people elected their Government to run the country well and to care for the people in that country. In return, people paid taxes so that their needs could be met, especially when they grew old as we all will or became ill or disabled. The basic belief was that this is what a civilised society should do, a safety net to cover the bad times as well as to train and educate people to do the tasks the country needed.
Not perfect, granted, but let’s compare it with where we are now since the Government adopted two key beliefs; private is better and “austerity”. Our taxes go to private companies like “Learn Direct” owned by Lloyds Bank that has just been scathingly criticised by OFSTED and had its contracts pulled- at last- for non-delivery. We, the people, are being fed the belief that education is not affordable, yet you have the Student loans system which is repeatedly criticised for its complexity, bureaucracy and is heavily subsidised by the taxpayers – how does that system make any sense? NHS resources are been diverted into PFI payments, another crazy idea that diverts funding away from the patients and is bankrupting our hospitals; other funding is wasted on the huge number of quangos set up to monitor and advise at high rates of pay for these bureaucrats whilst pay scales for Doctors, nurses, physio and occupational therapists etc are capped, causing high vacancy levels. Council housing was sold off at large discounts and not replaced, so there are long waiting lists and a huge Housing Benefit bill. And worst of all, our country now has children and adults going to bed hungry as they do not have enough to live on. All of the signs of a civilised country are falling apart; when will we get a competent Government that will put the needs of its citizens first and spend our taxes wisely?
People were on the whole, not terribly rich nor pitifully poor, but by and large got by in the middle ranks; they were content that should anything unpleasant/untoward happen, they could cope as the state would help. Education was free up to University level, health care from cradle to grave was provided, retired and disabled people had a basic income to live on and for those who couldn’t afford to buy their own homes, there was the safety net of Council Housing. All backed up by adequate emergency services of police, fire and ambulance services.

As we see the devastation that has affected Texas the impact on property and people is easy to see. What is less obvious is the business and related infrastructure damage that has occurred.
If you have not considered VOIP (telephone via the internet), Office 365 and the One-Drive system, call answering and message taking services – one of the benefits not often mentioned is “disaster recovery” is effectively included because of how it is designed and implemented.
This includes phone lines not working, computers damaged, data lost and trading effectively having to cease. And bear in mind companies that have a catastrophic data loss stand a 75% chance of going out of business within two years. Cloud services in this situation can be a godsend. Cloud services effectively mean that your data and the “machinery” that makes it work are held in an outsourced location. Often these buildings are extremely secure with multiple failsafe capabilities and backed up in multiple additional locations. Whereas we may not have the Texas level of flooding we can have power failure, fires, utility companies cutting through cables, theft, hard drive failures and many other events which can render our business inactive.

Toyota C-HR: Make It Personal Toyota introduces largest range of accessories yet for its new crossover The new Toyota C-HR may have the sharpest looks of any crossover on the market, but for proud owners that need only be the start of the story. With more accessories available than for any other Toyota passenger car, C-HR offers countless opportunities to ramp up style, practicality and technology, from multi-coloured exterior accents to ski racks and integrated iPad entertainment systems. The choice extends to 20 accessory packs available to order for new cars and more than 200 individual items that can be fitted by Toyota centres, creating thousands of potential permutations. What’s more, adding on key extras need not be a budget-busting move. The pricing structure for the C-HR range gives customers plenty of scope for upgrading the entry-level Icon model to suit their personal preferences, without pushing the cost into higher grade model territory. The cost of any accessory upgrades up to 10 per cent of the car’s on-the-road price can be spread using Toyota Financial Services. Making the right choice is important, particularly when specifying accessory packs that will be fitted to new vehicles at the factory. The new car configurator service on Toyota’s customer website lets people build their ideal C-HR by selecting exactly the options they want; each choice they make is shown on the vehicle image, so they can visualise the results. Currently all factory options are included, together with many of the most popular individual accessories fitted by Toyota centres. Accessory packs and centre-fit items are grouped into four categories: Style, Protection, Technology and Lifestyle. Style takes in items such as different coloured accents and trims on the bodywork,17 and 18inch alloy wheels in a range of finishes, front side and rear underruns and side steps or bars. As well as single items, customers can choose from Sport and SUV packs which conveniently bundle themed accessories together. Protection options include parking sensors, boot liner, rubber mats, mud flaps and a bumper protector. Technology features focus on infotainment, with rear-seat iPad or DVD systems and an upgrade to the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system to provide navigation functions, inclusive of three years’ free map updates. Lastly, thriller and science fiction fans will want to check out Flatliners, a contemporary update of the edgy 80s classic that follows a group of teens who get their kicks from indulging in near-death experiences.
