5th August - 1st September

Slimming World groups set to walk all over Bristol for charity Slimmers from South Bristol are putting their best feet forward for charity this August. As part of the Step All Over Cancer with Slimming World campaign, members who meet weekly at local groups, are aiming to raise money for Cancer Research UK, as well as spread the message that keeping a healthy weight reduces the risk of cancer. To do this they are each setting their own individual steps target and getting sponsored by friends, family and fellow members to achieve it. Slimming World Consultant Sarah Bryant is organising the fundraising challenge and says her inspirational members are filled with confidence and energy thanks to their weight losses: “I’m so proud of my members who have set themselves the challenge of walking more this August. “With our Body Magic activity programme, members learn that getting active doesn’t have to be joining the gym or running marathons. It’s walking the kids to school, doing the gardening, hitting the dancefloor - anything that raises the heart rate a little all counts. And any activity which boosts daily steps will help our members reach their Step All Over Cancer goal. It’s all about getting going gently and then building up until it becomes an enjoyable part of our daily routine.

“I’m sure my members will inspire more people in South Bristol to get active and improve their health, while also helping to raise awareness of the link between obesity and cancer. The money raised will go towards an amazing cause and my members feel very passionate about. We love to support Cancer Research UK’s incredible work.” “At our group we started talking about easy ways to fit more walking into our day and soon realised how many more steps you could do just by making tweaks to my daily routine. Parking the car further from work, walking with friends instead of going to the pub/for a coffee, getting off the bus a stop before, playing with the kids/grandkids, taking the stairs instead of the lift – it’s amazing what can make a huge difference when it comes to step count and I’m looking forward to finding new ways to fit steps in. Just like with a weight-loss target, Consultants encourage members to choose a goal that is right. And that’s one of my favourite things about Slimming World – the flexibility and the fact that it’s about finding what works for me – it’s not one size fits all”. For more information about local Slimming World groups or their Step All Over Cancer event, contact Sarah on 07879 443888, or pop along to any group which are held locally every morning Monday to Saturday and every evening Monday to Thursday.

Your garden in August

After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry to much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.

The essential gardening jobs for A ugust Take herb cutting

August is the ideal month to take cutting woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.

Pruning and tidying

Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.

10

Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.

Make plans for next year

A nice relaxing job for those hot days! Pull up a chair in a sunny spot and start planning for next year. Make sketches of your flower borders and vegetable plot and list what you want to plant. Take photos of your garden now while it is looking its best – if you want to rearrange in the winter its much easier to do if you have a reference point. Also think about what bulbs you want to plant for that early display of spring colour – bulbs are usually available to buy from the end of August ready for autumn planting.

Enjoy your garden!

Looking good this month….

Hydrangea

Why should you plant them? Hydrangeas are popular garden shrubs with delicate heads of flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. They are easy to care for, fully hardy and have an old fashioned, cottage style charm. How should you plant them? Hydrangeas like moist, free draining soil and a partially shaded sheltered spot.

August is set to be one of the biggest month’s yet for blockbuster Summer releases at your local Cineworld. It’s so block-busting, in fact, that we’re counting down the top five releases ready to ‘wow’ and excite you when settling into your cinema seat. Without further ado, here are the core silver screen hits to look forward to:

The top 5 movies for August

5. The Darkest Minds (Aug 10th) Ideal for anyone who prefers their superhero films to be more angsty, The Darkest Minds sees a group of teens come to terms with their amazing abilities, years after a deadly plague has killed almost every American child.

4. Christopher Robin (Aug 17th) Ewan McGregor steps into the eponymous role, which follows Christopher Robin during his adult years. He’s down on his luck with no end in sight - that is, until Pooh and friends re-enter his life in a big way.

3. The Meg (Aug 10th) If you’d ever wondered who’d win between the hard-edged Jason Statham and a megalodon shark, The Meg is the sort of campy summer spectacular you’ve been waiting for. The shark is ready to open wide, and Statham is people’s only hope.

2. Teen Titans Go! To the Movies (Aug 3rd) Not content with dominating the small screen, Robin, Cyborg, and the rest of the team step things up for their cinema debut in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. They discover that all other superheroes have their own movie, so why shouldn’t they?

1.Ant Man & The Wasp (Aug 3rd) Hot off the heels of this year’s Avengers Infinity War, it’s high time we find out what Marvel’s little guy was up to during his absence. Lucky for Scott, he’s got a capable bug hero to help him, as Ant Man & The Wasp takes to the skies and screen. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are teaming up once again to give readers a chance to win Teen Titans mechendise. Simply complete the word search on page 14. There’s so much to see at the cinema this August. Your only issue will be trying to fit them all in.

12

Aaron Potter is a professional writer for Cineworld Bristol and places these articles in Direct Local each month to give you the public a choice of great movies to view at your local cinema.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats

Bristol has been a trading City for well over a 1000 years, it has built a strong reputation for high quality, high tech industries. We are all especially proud of the part it has played in world aviation, from Rolls Royce engines to supersonic flight and of course our very own Concorde. But Concorde and the current airbus planes are a joint venture between us and our European neighbours. We know that a small majority voted in favour of leaving the EU and they were told how easy it would be. Of course the reality has proved much more difficult, worse those in the Conservative party who told us that a deal would be easy, cannot even agree amongst themselves what kind of deal they themselves actually want. They have wasted two years arguing amongst themselves whilst the Country drifts towards the exit with no clear or agreed plan in place. This Government have put their narrow party interest above the National interest and I hope they pay a very heavy price for it. Moving forward the Government have now laid a plan before Parliament, which a large section of their MPs appear to disagree with and so the Prime Minister will have to rely on Labour votes to get it through the Commons.

26

The EU are likely to want changes and so the whole set of proposals will be ‘watered down’further. We will still have to accept EU regulations without having a seat at the table protecting our interests, this must be the biggest act of self harm in our history. The EU is not prefect and does need reform, but you can only do that by being a member, we are cutting ourselves off from the largest trading bloc we deal with, to rely on the whims and moods of Donald Trump and to the delight of Vladimer Putin. In 1975 we had a referendum to decide whether we should stay in the EEC (as it was then) and 67% voted to remain in the EEC. At the time our Country was known as the sick man of Europe, poor economic outlook, loans from the IMF and labour disputes. Through our EU membership we have steadily risen to become the 5th richest nation in the world. I support a second referendum on the final deal and through it hope we can have a rational hardheaded debate on the affect to our economy and then make the right choice for both ours and our children’s future.

Finally, fold in the blueberries and divide the mixture between the muffin cases.
