Se is backing a new campaign encouraging people to build more brisk walking into their lives as a way to improve their health and wellbeing.

of course! Anything that gets you moving more and increases your heart rate has fantastic health benefits, and that’s why our group is backing the Active 10 campaign and we’re aiming to build more brisk walking into our daily lives.

“Just 10 minutes brisk walking a day can make a huge difference, and it’s something that most of us can do every day or at least work towards to some While just 10 minutes of brisk walking a day counts degree too. Whether you’re doing a few laps of your local shopping centre, hopping off the bus a stop as exercise and can protect and improve an individual’s health, Public Health England (PHE)’s early or walking to a meet a friend for coffee, walking latest research shows that over 50% of adults think can be incorporated in many ways. over 240 minutes a week is needed to have any “Sharing ideas for getting more active are just one health benefits. “But,” says Sarah, who runs of the ways my members get support each week to slimming groups in Whitchurch and Hengrove, “doing as little as 10 minute bursts of brisk walking achieve their weight-loss dreams. Together they also learn how to lose weight without going hungry with can make a real difference. That’s why I’m our flexible Food Optimising eating plan, and receive supporting Public Health England’s One You all the tips, inspiration and support they need to lose ‘Active 10’ campaign.” weight and keep it off for life.” Taking a 10 minute brisk walk each day can help build up towards the UK Chief Medical Officers’ (CMO) recommendation of at least 150 minutes per week of moderate to vigorous physical activity. This has been linked to health benefits including a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers. PHE’s free ‘Active 10’ app helps adults do more brisk walking, and it is the only app of its kind that combines intensity and time, rather than just distance.

To find out more about the Whitchurch and Hengrove Slimming World groups contact Sarah on 07879 443888 or pop along to one of her groups which are held every Tuesday at 9.30am at Hengrove Community Centre or every Wednesday at 5.30pm or 7.30pm at Bridge Farm School. If you’d like to incorporate more brisk walking into your day, search ‘Active 10’ online to download the app for free.

Sarah who has lost over 2st herself and supports around 280 members weekly to lose weight and get more active each week, says: “I know first-hand how difficult it can be to juggle a busy work and home life and try to fit in some sort of exercise. It’s so easy to give breaking a sweat a back seat in terms of priorities!

Your garden in July

Fling the doors open to the garden and head outside! Summer is here and what better way to spend your free time than being outside and enjoying your beautiful flower filled garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly deadheading and you’ll enjoy a longer display of bloom. Make sure you keep new plants well hydrated to get them through those long, hot days and hoe off those pesky weeds, which can thrive in the sunshine. Although this still can be a busy time in the garden, don’t forget to find the time to sit back and relax so that you can enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in to achieve your beautiful display. PLANT OF THE MONTH: Salvia A member of the sage family. Salvias are diverse group of plants ranging from annuals to herbaceous perennials and herbs

The essential gardening jobs for July FEED, WEED, AND DEADHEAD Adding a liquid feed to your weekly watering regime will give a much needed boost to hanging baskets, container and borders helping them to produce more flowers and, in some cases encouraging a second flourish of flowers late in the season. Bedding plants, roses and many other perennials will also benefit from regular deadheading.

With Hanging baskets a bit of common sense goes a long way. Try lifting a container or basket. Does if feel light or under watered? How does the compost look? Is it pale and shrunken away from the sides? Dig into the compost with your fingers. Does it feel dry? It should be moist but not dripping wet. During prolonged dry spells, water at least once a day.

This will prolong the flowering period making the garden more attractive and will also prevent the plants from putting their energy in to seed heads. Simply pinch off the fading flowers, or for tougher branches use secateurs. Don’t forget to keep weeds down they steal vital moisture and nutrients. Kill them by regularly hoeing borders and vegetable patches. Larger weeds should be dug out or pulled up by hand.

10

SPEND SOME LAZY HOURS IN THE GARDEN After all your hard work, enjoy the sunshine and laze in your garden.

Why should you plant them? With flowers that are popular with wildlife, they not only deliver colour and fragrance but are also great at attracting bees and butterflies. Salvias are long flowering with the potential to put on a great show from June through much of the summer and in to autumn. How should you plant them? Plant in full sun, with very well drained soil, and water well when it’s dry. Trim in the spring to maintain shape and deadhead once the flowers start to fade.

The top 3 movies For July

July’s summer movie slate is filled with returning franchises and plenty of exciting spectacle. Whether you like your big screen entertainment super-fuelled, music-filled, or quite literally caught between a rock and a hard place, there’s lots going on at Cineworld!

INCREDIBLES 2

Kicking us off on the July 12th, if you hadn’t already guessed, is action star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s latest action thriller Skyscraper. Releasing just a few months following the success of Rampage, this time the former wrestler finds himself scaling a fictional high-rise block known only as ‘The Pearl’ in a bid to save his family. But can this film take the action genre to new heights? Pixar’s first family return to the big screen just one day later in Incredibles 2, the highly anticipated sequel which picks up mere moments after where we last left them in the 2004 original. This time it’s Elastigirl in the hot seat, tasked with defending the world while Mr Incredible safeguards the kids at home. Fast-forward to July 20th and you can expect ABBA fans to weave out of the woodwork, flocking to cinemas to see Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. Set 10 years after the toe-tapping original, expect more songs, more holiday romance, and even more reasons to unleash your inner dancing queen. The fun doesn’t stop there as Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine are teaming up once again to give readers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Simply fill out the word search on page 14. Are you sitting comfortably? You will be when visiting Cineworld Bristol this July.

Councillors Surgery

Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats Labour promised Bristol an Arena over 20 years ago and still we are waiting, the current plan to build on the old marshalling yards at Temple Meads are currently being reviewed by the Mayor Marvin Rees (ie; the costs are now far too high and he is looking for a way out). The budget has gone from around £98m under the previous Mayor George Ferguson to a whopping £156m according to a report on the BBC. The Council have only allocated £123m so there is a huge shortfall and my guess is that the final bill will be bigger than that. Accountants KPMG were instructed by the Council to undertake a ‘value for money’ review and found that putting a mixed development of housing, shops and other employment on the site would generate more jobs and millions of pounds more for the local economy than an Arena at Temple Meads.

A Malaysian Company (YTL) that now own’s the old Brabazon hangar at Filton have entered the fray and are offering to build an even bigger arena (12,000 seats) on their Filton site. They say they will cover the costs of the Arena development, but want the Councl to pay around £50m towards improving the transport links to the proposed site. So Bristol would get it’s Arena, provided at no cost to the taxpayer, but would have to fund improved road, rail and bus links to the new arena. I know that a lot of Bristolians want the Arena to be in the centre of Bristol and of course Filton airfield is in the South Gloucestershire Council area. But both our very successful airport and Portbury Dock are outside the current City boundary and have operated there for many years. Of course, not forgetting the worlds’ most famous aircarft Concorde was built at Filton, which we all say is in Bristol. So what’s in a boundary? Is Temple meads or Filton the best option for our new arena? We are told the Mayor will make his decision on this matter next month. So I would love to hear your views on it, what are your thoughts?

Image and Email Addresses A company’s email address, in today’s business world, is becoming the first mode of communication that prospects, clients, banks and suppliers use to contact a business or organisation. Consequently, the humble email address can create (or destroy) that ever important “first impression”. Personal email addresses which include, for example, Hotmail, Live, Gmail, Yahoo, BT internet, Virginmedia etc are perfect for a private / personal email address. Used for a business it sends out the wrong signal.

It says, Hobby, Part time, Not a business, Temporary – not attributes or labels you may want to have attached to your business – whether it be a new start or an established enterprise. If the business has a web site its best to use the domain name for emails as well. And many web hosting companies include email forwarding as part of the package. Ideally, link the domain and the emails to Office 365 or G-Suite. This is inexpensive but very important as it means your emails will be in the cloud and as a result backed up. For more information on email addresses or setting up business grade email accounts contact Techvolution.

Councillors Surgery Your local Labour councillors have been very busy over the last month – and to good effect it seems! We have just recently learned that all of the hard work of local communities around saving their libraries has paid off. Many local libraries, due to be closed across the city, are now to be fully funded by the Council’s four-year budget plan, so at least until 2022 under the current administration. It really is tremendous news, particularly here in Brislington where Wick Road Library has remained an essential, but sadly scarce, community resource. As I’ve shared before, council budgets nationally have all been cut by over 40% over the last five years, which is why many other cities will sadly lose their libraries. This great result for Bristol has come about through the hard work of campaigners, and some robust accounting by the Labour Executive of Bristol City Council. Bristol is now the only core city that has not cut any local libraries which is truly a statistic to be proud of. The local Labour Party branch in Brislington has taken a key role in campaigning to save Wick Road Library – local activists have worked hard by speaking to residents about what the library means to them (documented in a book entitled ‘Wick Road Library – Part of Our Story’), calling meetings, giving presentations, and coming up with creative solutions that will ensure the existence of a library in the long term. There have been discussions about a plan to move Wick Road Library to St Cuthbert’s Church as part of a bigger and better community hub, but this is a long-term idea that is still in the early stages of development.

Kerry McCarthy, Labour MP for Bristol East, has been a major help in this. CIL funding is available for communities wherever there is local building work being carried out and it is the job of community forums to decide how it will be spent. The bid to spend CIL money on helping to keep the library open can now be dropped, meaning more funding is available for other vital community projects. A bid for funds to upgrade the library may well go ahead in the future once plans for its future become clearer. As Labour councillors, we support local housing developments but recognise that this must be carried out in a planned way that is sympathetic to the local community and can be maintained by local infrastructure. We have therefore been fighting a proposal to build flats in a back space between Wick Road and Wick Crescent. With all four Brislington councillors working together and holding meetings with the local residents and with the Planning case officer, we have managed to get this stopped. There are also further issues with developments in the old St John’s Ambulance area that we are now investigating. I am constantly hearing from residents who are concerned with bin collections, maintenance and antisocial behaviour, but it is increasingly difficult to get Council departments to react quickly. I can only assume that as budgets are squeezed and the workforce contracts, we see evidence of this on our streets and local communities are again bearing the brunt of austerity cuts. Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Labour Councillors for Brislington East and West.

Summer Berry Pudding Ingredients

300g strawberry 250g blackberry 100g redcurrant 500g raspberry OR 1¼kg/2lb 12oz mixed berries and currants of your choice 175g golden caster sugar 7 slices day-old white bread, from a square, medium-cut loaf

Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper – keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves – stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice. Line the bowl with cling film and prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. Overlap two pieces of cling film in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole. Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go. Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top – trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.
