Slimmers Set To Spring Clean For A New Summer Wardrobe Slimmers in Bristol are celebrating losing weight and donating their now too-big clothes to charity. As part of a national campaign, members of our local Slimming World groups are being invited to donate the clothes, shoes, bags and accessories they no longer need since losing weight to local shops via a bag collection at their Slimming World groups. So confident in the fact they’ll never need their over-sized clothes again, the kind-hearted slimmer’s, who meet week hope to collect 100’s of bags to donate. Each bag is worth around £25 to Cancer Research UK. The Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is taking place in all 18,000 Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland between 6-19th May. Last year the campaign raised £3.3million. As well fundraising, Slimming World also aims to raise awareness of the links between obesity and cancer. Obesity is the biggest cause of cancer after smoking, but only 15% of people are aware of the link. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing 13 different types of cancer, including bowel, kidney and breast cancer.

6

Local weight-loss Consultant Sarah Bryant who runs the groups in Whitchurch and Hengrove, and says the annual Big Slimming World Clothes Throw is one of her favourite events in the calendar. “We’ve held a Big Slimming World Clothes Throw event for years now, and this year I know it’s going to be even bigger and better and my members are so so excited to take part. It’s such a liberating feeling having the confidence to bag up clothes you’ll never fit into again, all the while raising money for an extremely important cause. My members can’t wait to make room for a new summer wardrobe by taking part – I know the atmosphere in group will be electric when we bring all the bags together! When we meet each week we laugh together, share challenges and tips for overcoming them, celebrate success and swap inspiration, tips and recipes. We really are one big family and I will be so proud to see them say goodbye to those larger sizes and set targets for enjoying a healthier holiday season feeling absolutely fantastic.” Anyone who would like to take part in the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw or find out more about Slimming World is invited to get in touch with Sarah on 07879 443888.

The top 3 movies For May

Solo Whether you’re in the mood for revisiting a galaxy far, far away with an old friend, unexpected bonds between mother and baby-sitter, or the return of Marvel’s self-aware Merc with a Mouth, there’s something for everyone hitting the silver screens at Cineworld this May. Yes, the sun might finally be out, but it’s really the cinemas where things are heating up. Kicking us off on May 4th is Charlize Theron’s Tully, a new comedy-drama which has already got critics excited due to an overwhelming reception at this year’s Sundance festival. Theron plays mother of three Marlo, a woman who finds herself challenged by the unlikely bond she builds with the introduction of a young nanny known as Tully. Slap bang in the middle of May on the 15th is the supercharged sequel Deadpool 2. Promising more R-rated action, plenty of sharp-edged humour, along with a much grander sense of scale this time around, the X-Force will need to overcome their comedic differences to help protect a young mutant from Josh Brolin’s time-traveling soldier Cable. Finally, rounding us out for the month on May 24th is the origin story of the Star Wars’ resident smuggler in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Han and his team are challenged with pulling off the biggest heist of the century right from under the eyes of the empire. Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine similarly team up once more to give viewers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Just fill out the next page crossword. Balance your fun in the sun with fun in the cinema throughout the whole of May!

Here We Go Around in Circles Again; Bristol City Council Reintroduces Sunday and Bank Holiday Parking Charges Have you been into town recently? Noticed the number of empty shops in The Galleries, Cabot Circus and elsewhere? And virtually every month another well known shopping brand goes into liquidation? Recent news is that Debenhams is having financial problems, the dividend to its Shareholders has been halved (boo-hoo) and it is having to continually offer sales and discount stock to attract customers to part with their hard earned cash – Hooray! Next isn’t doing very well either. Never mind, Greggs is expanding –yum. Poundshops are everywhere. What does this say about shopping in town centres? Basically, people are not feeling well off, they are looking for value-for-money and tightening their belts. The growth in online shopping is also hitting City Centre shops hard. The only retailer that seems to be doing well is John Lewis and their store is situated at the Mall in South Gloucestershire In response to this picture of City Centre shopping habits, Bristol is re-introducing parking charges on Sundays, now a big shopping day, and Bank Holidays. These charges were abolished in 2012 to encourage shoppers and just people to wander into the city centre at weekends.

The Council also hasn’t altered by one iota it’s policy of encouraging its citizens to change their stubborn clinginess to their cars and take public transport or to take up cycling. Of course, this combination of exhortation and punitive measures have been going on for many years, but we stubborn Bristolians still cling to our cars. Motorists are an easy cash cow for the Council to milk, so let’s continue. There are good reasons why Bristolians haven’t dramatically changed their transport habits, despite charges, congestion and roadworks. One is the unreliability of public transport. FOSBR (Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways) have called a public meeting just this week on the unreliability of the Severn Beach line following many unheard and unresponded to complaints about cancellation of trains. Since ‘new’ trains were recycled by GWR from Thames valley, the service has got even worse! And don’t let’s start on Metrobus, except to point out that there are more opportunities to fine motorists who wander over into the bus lanes. But it’s alright; Councillors and Aldermen on the Council can park for free in College Green car park. ”Do as I say, not as I do”. When Bristol loses its good shops as it has John Lewis, and becomes a centre of empty retail units and cheap outlets – nothing against them but we need variety – will the circle go around again and parking fees be abolished or reduced? We can dream..

Councillors Surgery

We have also heard that they have put an extra £9m into reserves, what for we wonder, when the Council’s services are being slashed to the bone.

Against a backdrop of cuts to our local services, massive potholes in our roads and a crisis in social care the Labour Administration have decided to employ 4 new directors at a salary not short of 165k each. This is on top of the decision to pay off the previous Chief Executive with £70k of tax payers money. Apparently she left the authority early for what we are told were personal reasons. Attempts to find out why she was paid this money after just a few months in post have been met with a veil of secrecy by the Mayor. Were we not told that having a Mayor would lead to more ‘open’ and ‘accountable’ local Government and that the ‘buck’ would stop with them?

It is said that Bristol has to pay these types of salaries as senior officers do not want to work in our great City. So from being a place where managers would be proud to put Bristol on their CV they are now shunning the City as a ‘basket’ case.

Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats

Well they certainly have had the bucks but where it is being spent is clouded in mystery. So whilst we are told there is no money for our much needed local services the Mayor and his cabinet are well cossetted from the effects of the cuts they are imposing on the rest of us. There has been a 25% boost to the Mayor ‘Executive Office’ budget for the coming year, whilst everyone else has been asked to find efficiency savings.

24

We should really be asking questions as to why senior officers are avoiding working in Bristol and the effect it is having on the efficient running of the Council. As previously said the state of our roads is becoming a City wide scandal and I am encouraging all those affected through damage to cars or bikes etc to make a claim on the Council’s insurance, after all it is their responsibility to keep the road up to a safe and useable standard.

Controlling your Calendar

Last month we covered the benefits of planning and organisation to save time. The aim of this article is to provide some tips on how to do that.

We all have calendars – either on our smart phones or in a book. We also have lists – To-Do’s, and we still battle to get things done. The reason why some people manage to get so much more done than others is down to scheduling. This is where you allocate certain times in your diary or calendar on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to carry out certain tasks. The table below shows how a weekly / monthly calendar can have time scheduled for certain activities. This is an example for a company owner/manager who is client facing.

By structuring how you work your week, not being distracted and ensuring you keep to time you will find how much more productive your time is. Further, you will have the information to decide when you need to bring in another person to help you or make system improvements to do certain tasks quicker. It may be necessary to “bar” calls during certain times and use the scheduled Calls catch up time to deal with them. Just this little thing makes people massively more efficient in their time management. Try it – you may be pleasantly surprised

Councillors Surgery Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Labour Party Bristol calls itself a ‘learning city’ and has often put itself forward to be a ‘city of culture’. Labour Councillor Estella Tincknell has been an enthusiastic supporter and advocate of the whole range of cultural activities in our city. We have two nationally renowned theatres in the Bristol Old Vic and the Tobacco Factory, the Hippodrome which features West End musicals alongside opera and ballet, and lots of small theatre groups. The city is renowned for its vibrant musical scene, with a wealth of venues featuring the best of all types of popular music genres, and our Labour MPs have taken a stand against the closure of beloved musical institutions such as the Thekla. The Arnolfini shows cutting edge modern art while the museum and the M Shed are good for children.

There is something for everyone! But can we be a ‘learning city’ without public libraries? Struggling to keep within a legal budgetary framework, Bristol City Council felt itself forced, by government cuts to council revenue funding, to dispose of non-statutory provision. With the growing demand for adult and children’s social care ( statutory obligations), caused by the ageing of the population and the impact of poverty on many of our families, the council originally felt it had no choice but to close some of its branch libraries.

The public outcry which followed this decision has led to a lengthy series of consultations and discussions about how to keep the libraries open. Council officers favor a community-led option whereby residents’ groups take out a lease to own and manage the library, often as part of a larger community facility. This is being explored round the city, but other options are also being investigated: the Council is keeping the libraries open until the Autumn while these explorations are continuing. In a city bedevilled by poor bus services and regular traffic holdups, many poorer citizens look for services in their own Neighbourhood.

That is why Labour councillors and activists in Brislington are seeking a premise to accommodate the Library and offer Brislington folk a range of services, from a police drop-in Centre to yoga classes, from a meeting room for the many groups that currently use Wick Road Library to a health facility, from a cafe to an affordable space for functions. Anybody who can offer help or advice is welcome to contact us; call Harriet Bradley on 07743815785. This is a time of social change and upheaval, which many find challenging and worrying. In line with Labour’s pledge to build thousands of new homes, Brislington and other parts of the city are the site of many new housing developments which are planned to provide affordable homes for local families, but which create disruption during the construction phase. We have to pull together and think creatively if we are to come through with positive outcomes. We would urge citizens in East and South Bristol to discuss their worries and possible solutions with their Labour councillors, who will always lend a sympathetic ear. We may not always be able to solve your problems but we will try our best.

Your garden in May

Spring is well under the way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…

Plant of the month Geranium

The essential gardening jobs for May Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.

Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!

Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.

Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.

Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.

32

If you have already own tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.

Enjoy your garden!

Why should you plant them? Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

Gorgeous Cherry Cheesecake Ingredients

For the base 200g pack shortbread biscuits 50g melted butter For the cake 2 x 300g tub soft cheese, Philadelphia is good 1 tsp vanilla extract 175g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp plain flour 2 eggs For the topping 50g golden caster sugar 400g cherry, pitted

34

Instructions

Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Grease and line a loose-sided metal terrine tin (27 x 10cm, 7cm deep) or a similar size loaf tin with baking parchment. Tip the shortbread into a food processor and blitz into crumbs, then pour in the butter and continue to whizz until it’s the texture of smooth peanut butter. Press the shortbread mix into the base of tin. Beat the cheese, vanilla extract and sugar until smooth then beat in the flour and eggs until completely combined – this can be done by hand or in a food processor. Pour the mix over the biscuit base and smooth with a spatula. Bake for about 1 hr until just completely set and tinged brown at the edges. Leave to cool out of the fridge, then refrigerate until completely cold. While the cake is cooling sprinkle the sugar into a frying pan and place over a high heat until caramelised. Throw in the cherries and stew in the sugar for 3-4 mins until they are sticky and have released their juices, but haven’t collapsed too much. Leave to cool, then strain the cherry juice back into the pan. Place on a high heat and reduce the juice to a sticky syrup, set aside to cool. To serve, gently release the cake from the mould onto a board and leave at room temperature for 30 mins. Just before serving spoon the cherries over, drizzle with the syrup and cut into slices.
