“Eat More to Weigh Less” say Bristol’s Slimmers A slimming expert says there’s no need for anyone looking to lose weight to go hungry, after new research found that filling up on low energy dense foods is more likely to lead to weight loss success than counting calories and cutting portion sizes. Sarah Bryant, who has lost 2st 7lbs and runs the Whitchurch and Hengrove Slimming World groups says the key for anyone wanting to shed the pounds ahead of summer is to eat more – not less. The Solutions for Weight through Psychology, Satiation and Satiety study*, led by the University of Leeds and published in the Journal of Nutrition, compared women following Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan, to another group of women following the NHS Choices programme, which is centred around calorie counting. Unlike a calorie-controlled diet, the Food Optimising plan encourages slimmers to fill up on low energy dense foods (foods that contain fewer calories per gram) including normal everyday foods like fruit and vegetables, lean meat, fish, pasta, rice and eggs freely to satisfy their appetite. All participants attended four laboratory test days at the University of Leeds’ Human Appetite Research Unit, eating low energy dense meals for two days and high energy dense meals for the remaining tests to allow researchers to assess their impact on appetite and calorie intake. Both groups found that eating lower energy dense foods left participants feeling less hungry and more full despite consuming fewer calories with larger amounts of foods. The two groups were also monitored over a time period of 14 weeks to explore the longer-term effects. Slimmers following a plan based around low energy dense foods for this time period – as well as attending a weekly Slimming World group where they weighed in and received support – also reported increased feelings of control around their food choices and a greater confidence in their ability to stick to their weight-loss plan, as well as losing significantly more weight than calorie-counting counterparts – 6.2% body weight compared to 3.8%. The research comes as no surprise to Sarah, who supports over 250 people to lose weight each week at her Slimming World groups. She says: “I tried so many fads when I decided I wanted to lose weight, I was just desperate to get quick results. Yes, I lost weight at first, but I only put it all back on again because I felt too restricted and deprived. I felt so ashamed at ‘failing’ too. You can’t keep that up for long at all.
“When I joined Slimming World everything changed. From the very first week I learned that actually, you can feel full and lose weight enjoying all your favourite dishes, just by making small changes to the way you shop, cook and eat. I eat more than I ever did before, I just eat smarter – filling up on lean meat, vegetables, fruit, potatoes, rice and fat-free dairy before anything else. I make healthy, homemade meals from scratch that the whole family can enjoy, and I can still enjoy a regular glass of wine or small bar of chocolate too. “That’s why this new research really doesn’t surprise me. My members know they don’t have to weigh, count or measure everything they eat to lose weight. They don’t have to give anything up and they don’t have to ever go hungry thanks to Slimming World’s Free Food. It’s a lifestyle not a quick fix, and something that can be kept up forever. Rebecca has lost 7t since joining the group last year. She says: “If I’m honest I was a little sceptical before I joined Slimming World – it sounded too good to be true. I always thought the only way to lose weight was to simply eat less or count everything that I ate and drank. I soon learned that wasn’t the case – I can enjoy meals like homemade fish and chips one night, curry another, roast dinners, ‘Fakeaways’ – the list is endless! I’ve stopped counting, weighing and measuring everything and I’ve made small changes – like using lean meat, low-calorie cooking spray and adding plenty of fresh vegetables to fill my plate.” “Another huge difference for me has been the group support. I’ve made a whole new bunch of friends and I look forward to sharing my success with them each week, as well as talking through challenges on the more difficult weeks. We always swap great tips and motivation as well as recipes. We’re like one big family. Now I’m slimmer I feel so much more happy and confident – and I’ve got so much more energy too! I’ve actually started cycling now and I can’t get enough”. If you’d like to lose weight without going hungry too at a local Slimming World group contact Sarah on 07879 443888 or just pop along to one of her groups which are held every Tuesday at 9.30am at Hengrove Community Centre or Wednesday at 5.30pm or 7.30pm at Bridge Farm School, Whitchurch.

Your garden in June
Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden. Plant of the month Rose Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.
The essential gardening jobs for June Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.
10
A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mover blades if we have a drought. Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sap-sucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide. Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.
How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser. Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats
We were all told that no one knew who was in charge of Bristol City Council, so it would be very hard to hold anyone to account. Therefore we were all told you must have a Mayor, that way you have someone who is accountable to all of us for the services of the City Council. We were told that the buck would stop with them. Well we all know through experience of having a Mayor how the reverse has happened. Meaningful public question time and debate has been all but ended, you cannot ask questions of the Mayor unless the item is on the agenda already. Mayor’s question time and the state of the city annual event are closely staged managed and opposition Councillors have been replaced by Marvin’s Labour stooges as chairs of all the Council commissions. So from now on Bristol City Council will have the Labour Party holding the Labour Mayor to account. This is not healthy for our democracy nor the much vaunted accountability that we were told this Mayoral system would bring. We hear a lot from Jeremy Corbyn and his acolyte’s about their new style of radical politics, yet as soon as Labour get into office they stifle any criticism of their performance or policies.
24
Hardly radical or democratic and rather cynical. They are not radical and do not believe in open Government nor meaningful freedom of speech. The hard left now running the Labour party have always looked at democracy as an inconvenience. I believe the main reason for them taking all key opposition chairs on Bristol City Council was because we were asking embarrassing questions of why the Mayor had agreed to let the previous Chief Executive leave with a £70k payout. Labour now control the lot, the Mayor, the cabinet and now the scrutiny function on the Council. But many of us have long memories and remember the last time Labour had supreme power in the City, we ended up having the 2nd highest Council tax in the Country, but the worse services. So Marvin, you now have nowhere to hide, your party runs the lot, you cannot blame the opposition as you have effectively removed them and replaced them with members of your own place people instead. This is a watershed moment for democracy in our City, we will not stop asking the questions that need to be asked whether it be about payouts to senior officers or cuts to our local services. But we will also campaign with renewed vigour to get rid of this ‘cult’ personality style of politics as practised under the Mayoral system with a more collegiate and open style of Government.

Daily Routines & Timely Meals Improve Performance There is increasing research into Circadian Rhythms – better known as Body Clocks.
8. Help your body wind down in the evening by only eating a small supper 9. Pursue leisure activities to take your mind off work at night to let your brain wind down as well 10. Plan your daily routine, monitor and record how you feel – then adjust accordingly
With new smart watches there is more data than ever available for research and some of that information is proving useful and illuminating. Regular routines – meaning getting up at about the same time, eating regular meals, having specific times for working, relaxing and ultimately sleeping is healthier for you. To help yourself you will feel and perform better if you: 1.Get into a routine and stick to it – even on weekends 2. Are active in daylight and rest in darkness 3. Expose yourself to sunshine in the morning 4. Exercise or do physical activity, if you can, around midday 5. Stop using smartphones, tablets or computer screens a couple of hours before sleeping 6. Eat meals at regular times as they can significantly impact your body clock 7. Eat larger meals earlier in the day because your body can process the food better

Councillors Surgery
Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Labour Councillors for Brislington
Who can be unaware that Britain is currently gripped in a housing crisis. Under the current government homelessness is soaring, while housing prices spiral. The Resolution Foundation estimates that only 1 in 3 of the millennial generation will be able to purchase their own house. One third of the population live in rented property. Many readers will be worrying about their children’s future. In Bristol we have all noticed the rough sleepers in doorways or in tents in parks. This is why Labour has committed itself so strongly to the building of new homes. Cabinet member for housing, Paul Smith, is determined to hit the target of 2,000 a year, and equally determined that many of these will be affordable, preferably owned by the Council itself. Housing means development and that is where problems start. Sitting on Development Control (planning) Committee, Harriet and colleagues face conventional developers, using estimates based on current land prices and rents, who argue that their projects will not be viable if they are forced to meet the Council’s targets of 20-30% affordable. If the Committee turns the application down, the developer can appeal; assessors appointed by the government investigate the appeals, which are often upheld, resulting in hefty fines of thousands of pounds imposed on an already cash-strapped Council. That is why the Council must utilise its own lands, such as the new development on the site of the disused elderly people’s care home in Broomhill.

Development in dense urban areas inevitably impacts on the environment. Open spaces are diminished, strain put on local infrastructure such as schools and surgeries. The volume of cars in the area is increased, with consequent traffic congestion, increased pollution and parking pressure. Unsurprisingly residents often resist development; councillors must ensure that measures are taken to mitigate these effects. This is a big issue in Brislington: the area is designated for growth: it is close to the city centre, and is a pleasant area to live in with several parks and the beloved library we are fighting to preserve. Developments such as the Paintworks and the planned housing on the Park and Ride pose anxieties for local people. However, housing must be provided, especially for young families; and while the impacts may be worrying, development also brings benefits: new inhabitants with energy and ability to start new initiatives; new custom for existing businesses, while new businesses and resources arrive. The lively SPRING group which works to brighten and refresh the Sandy Park shopping area is a good example of what can be achieved. Bristol, as a city of sanctuary, has a reputation for welcoming new citizens. How much better to live in a flourishing rather than a rundown area of the city! Your Labour councillors are well aware of the negative aspects of development so please feel free to bring us your concerns. While change is inevitable and will bring disruption, we believe the end results will be a better environment for all Bristol’s inhabitants and a safer, cleaner , more vibrant city.

To Have a Bath or Not to Have a Bath? That is the Question Our, oh so caring, Government are at it again! Spying into our personal habits and trying to dictate what we get up to in our own homes. “What is it this time?” I hear you ask; the Department of Environment is discussing setting each of us a “water target” of the amount of water for each of us to use daily. The rationale is that water is a scarce commodity, and in London and the South-East – where else to merit such attention? – becoming scarcer as demand increases. Elsewhere, water provision is adequate, indeed plentiful is some areas of this island, as we all know. And it’s not as if this hasn’t been tried before: during World War 2, people were exhorted to restrict their baths to 4 inches deep. This was during a time of general rationing and the pompous Captain Mainwaring types couldn’t resist interfering in all areas of family life under the motto “Don’t you know that there is a War on?” It didn’t work well then and people are more conscious of the need for cleanliness now. Those were the days when people had a bath once a week, whether they needed it or not. Nowadays, if you don’t shower daily and use deodorant, you are the person no-one wants to sit by on the bus or train. Showers are much more popular and prevalent than in those days and obviously use far less water. There are shower heads you can buy that mix air and water so that you get the power, but still save on water.
32
Thankfully, many more take showers now, but more frequently. So the Department of Environment are recommending measures like we take one bath per week, turn off the tap whilst cleaning our teeth, planting Mediterranean plants rather than native species –surely that is risky given how many non-native plants have spread and become real pests like Japanese knotweed and Himalyan Balsam. The D of E also ignore the fact that people generally are a lot more conscious of water usage due to bills rising so much over the past 20 years or so; our local company, Bristol Water were prevented from implementing rises in future years that the regulator viewed as extortionate. Water bills will still go up, but just not as much. But what about the responsibilities of the Water companies? Everyone has seen and reported leaks that are then not tackled for days, sometimes weeks. It was reported on the news that in the Thames Water area alone, enough water is lost through leaks in a month to keep a large town like Newcastle provided for a year. So let’s start there shall we, holding the water companies to account. There is one suggestion that is being floated though; having baths together. Now that is a lot more fun. Please form an orderly queue…. Article by Elieen Means Chair of Bristol for Europe Chair of Bristol Bordeaux Partnership
