Your garden in October Autumn is officially here! October, in all its glory, gives us a wonderful display of colours. The trees are beginning to lose their leaves in abundance as they become dormant for winter, telling us that the change of season is in full swing.

LOOKING GOOD THIS MONTH... Conifers

THREE ESSENTIAL GARDENING JOBS

The days are much shorter and cooler and we can feel autumn chill in the air. Although trees are the stars of the month, October is time to think about how the garden will look when it wakes from hibernation. There are plants to be cut back and left tidy for the winter, shrubs to be planted or moved, summer plants to be removed and replaced with winter hardy bedding, bulbs to be strategically placed in borders and the lawn to be fed and given its final mow……. October may bring with it the beginning of quiet times for the garden – but not for the gardener.

PLANT TREES AND SHRUBS

October is the ideal month to plant trees and shrubs. Although the container grown plants can be planted at any time of the year they are easier to care for if WHY SHOULD YOU PLANT planted in the autumn or winter. THEM? SEVERN VALE BOWLS CLUB AND BISHOPSMEAD NURSING HOME Vicarage Road, Bishopsworth, Bristol BS13.

A member of our Club and also an employee of the Nursing Home brought a resident from the Home next door to watch the odd game of bowls. During talks it evolved that should the Nursing Home residents have to be evacuated in case of fire, they would need to be taken across the road to the local school. The only way out would be the only way in for the Fire Brigade. - Not a good idea - so it was agreed the maintenance manager from the Bowls Club would erect a gate at the rear of the Home into the Club’s green. Excellent. The Bowls Club and Staff from the home held fund raising events to help pay for this venture and the gate was finally installed by members of the Bowls Club. On 4th September members from the Bowls Club and Residents from the Home held an official opening of the GATE. 103 year old resident Linda Cryer officiated by cutting the ribbon to declare the gate open.

QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS

The Bowls Club were hosting a game from a Club in Northampton that day, they were pleased that the local Bowls Club and Nursing Home had worked together to achieve this community relationship. On nice days the Club now have residents from the home calling in to watch games and have a cup of tea with the Bowlers. The Bowls Club is now in the process of raising money for a defibrillator, which will be available to both the Bowls Club and the Nursing Home Staff.

Movie Previews For October You’d think that heading into the last quarter of the year, the summer swash of blockbuster releases would be replaced by films you could wrap up warm to near the fire – not at Cineworld. This October brings with it, not just scares, but laughs, toe-tapping songs, and even space epics! Kicking us off on October 3rd is highly anticipated Spidey spin-off film Venom. In it, Tom Hardy steps into the shoes of down-on-his-luck reporter Eddie Brock, who finds himself forced to wrestle with an unwanted inner demon. Then, Rowan Atkinson returns as the bumbling British agent in Johnny English Strikes Again just two days later on October 5th. This time Johnny will need to master technology to save the world in honour of queen and country. Fast forward a week and it’s a double whammy of hard-hitters as Ryan Gosling swap City of Stars for shooting stars in Neil Armstrong biopic First Man. Then on the same day, the thrills turn up to 11 as seven total strangers check in for some Bad Times at the El Royale. One more week ahead on October 19th sees the release of two very different kinds of Halloween sequel. One is Halloween, a follow-up to the original 1978 John Carpenter slasher. The other? Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween, a sequel to the Jack Black-headed family adventure that promises more tricks as well as treats. Lastly on October 24th, get ready to experience the story of Rock’s greatest frontman in Bohemian Rhapsody, which documents the rise and graceful fall of Freddie Mercury. Get ready to go ga ga! Then, when you can breathe, Cineworld Bristol and Direct Local Magazine have teamed up to give readers a chance to win Bohemian Rhapsody movie goodies. Simply fill out the word search on page 14. Halloween not your thing? There’s something for everyone at Cineworld Bristol this October.

Dreamtime Shows

The show has a quick pace and is a lot of fun and the children are involved in the action throughout.

Dreamtime Shows are are proud to have performed in 7 cities to over 5,000 children spreading our ANTI-BULLYING message with our production of Jack & the Beanstalk in 2017! OH YES WE ARE! But that was last year . . . . . and we’re already looking forward to 2018 and all the singing, dancing and fabulous costumes that it’s going to bring! DREAMTIME SHOWS proudly presents our all-new ANTI-BULLYING pantomime . . . ALADDIN!

We can adapt our scenery to fit into any sized space and is suitable for all ages from 5 – 11. For children to gain maximum benefit we ask schools to limit the number of children to approximately 250 per performance. We want to continue spreading our good work and want to bring our show to even more people in 2018! We are delighted to be returning home to the South West (Our Managing Director has spent 10 years in London but is a Bristol boy born and bred!) and are in the area in December (with limitedavailability). Our shows can fit into any space; we are fully flexible and the best bit is that WE COME TO YOU! We perform in schools, for local groups, at community centres or even your children’s birthday party!! For more information, prices or to book your show please call us on 077 47 106 168 or email our Managing Director Matthew at : Matthew@dreamtimeshows.com

ALADDIN is a laugh-a-minute, toe-tapping hysterical ANTI-BULLYING adventure. Within the pantomime we see the effects of bullying and what the consequences can be.

The script is written by writers based in London’s West End and addresses the anti-bullying message in an interactive, fun and humorous way with a large amount of direct audience participation. The show creates a real opportunity for pupils to understand the issue of bullying, how to combat it and most importantly how to put a STOP to it.

Bristol Business People making a Better Bristol!

Taking on an Obstacle Challenge to Tackle Food Poverty amongst Children in Bristol A GROUP of 8 friends from a variety of Bristol based business are taking on a grueling obstacle challenge, hoping to raise £5,000 to tackle holiday hunger in the City. Among the businesses are; Ben Savage from Glentworth Insurance, Charlie Dyson Travel Councilors, Dave Gainard from KN Office, David Nichols Doveton Press, David Wells from Clifton Chiropractic, Elaine Smith from Mortgages Unlocked, Patrick Britten Barrs Court Construction and Dwight Britten from Rakata Technology. Taking place on the 13th October, the grueling course combines distance running with a variety of obstacles along the way, each inspired by game shows such as Total Wipeout, Takshi’s Castle, Gladiators and fun house… The runners are expecting sweeper arms, giant pigeon battles, big balls and the travellator. The runners will endure 10km and 20 obstacles. They’ll be taking on one of the toughest challenges of the day all in aid of helping to combat holiday hunger in the City.

20 ).

In the last 30 years the proportion of children living in poverty in the UK has nearly doubled (to 3.5 million). Bristol has 18,900 children under 16 in low income families (23.2% of the total number of children in that age bracket There is also a lack of affordable childcare and insufficient provision of good quality activities for this age range, especially in Bristol. We know that young people who are eligible for free school meals go hungry during school holidays and Community of Purpose is committed to working with local businesses to address this real-life problem. Amy Kington, Community of Purpose CEO said “We’re going to use all funding raise to help the type of kids who can’t afford a holiday club let alone a holiday, the kids who will bring younger siblings because their adults sleep in all day, the kids who hide under the covers at 2am at night to escape the screaming and cursing, the kids who really look forward to breakfast and lunch because food isn’t in the cupboards at home, the kids who will need clothing because they’ll kept turning up in the same outfits! It costs just £1.40 to feed a child each day so anyone wishing to donate to this very worthy cause can do so by visiting our website: www.participant.co.uk

SHUTTERCRAFT BRISTOL OPENS SHOWROOM IN UK FIRST FOR THE FRANCHISE The Bristol franchise holders of national plantation shutters and blinds company Shuttercraft have opened the chain’s first UK showroom. Martin Burge was only the second owner of a Shuttercraft franchise when he set up the business on his wife Sue’s birthday in August 2012. Six years later he has grown the company significantly and has four other employees including fitters and sales staff. Now the husband and wife team, both of whom are directors of Shuttercraft Bristol, have invested in the purchase and fit out of the new shop, which is in Wotton Road in St Anne’s. For now, however, the couple are excited about the potential which the showroom has for attracting new customers to experience the quality and versatility of the products on offer. “It’s amazing to be here,” said Mr Burge, “especially if I look back six years when I was starting the company – a new franchise brand – from scratch, with just me and a van.” “The shop’s got plenty of parking and is only a 10-minute drive from places like Clifton and Redland where our core customer base is. “They’re exceptional products – well-made, versatile and multi-functional – so you need a showroom to demonstrate all the benefits to customers. “Everything a customer will need is here. We’ve got bay windows, patio doors and so on, all mocked up so that people can see what the end result will really look like. “It’s also something that businesses which we’re looking to partner with would expect to see, so I’m expecting Shuttercraft Bristol to fly from here.” As well as being a showroom for Shuttercraft’s range of plantation shutters and window blinds, the shop will also act as an office and a basis for enhanced sales activity. Mrs Burge plans to focus on business development, looking to meet with kitchen companies, designers, bathroom companies and the like with a few to striking up new commission-based relationships. Mr Burge will concentrate on sales and overseeing fitting.

26

Sue and Martin Burge of Shuttercraft Bristol Mrs Burge, who gave up a successful dog grooming business to help her husband with the development of his company, said she was looking forward to taking Shuttercraft Bristol to the next level. “We wouldn’t be able to afford to employ someone full-time on business development,” she said, “so it’s a pleasure to be able to support him and hopefully help Shuttercraft Bristol grow even more. “I’m really proud of what he’s achieved. Anyone who’s started up a business of their own will know how hard those first few years are. Martin’s been a real driving force and we’re seeing the rewards coming through now. “Turning a job into a business which can sustain its own staff and premises isn’t an easy thing to do, so we’re really delighted we’ve reached this point and we’re excited about the future.” Shuttercraft has 24 franchisees operating around the UK. Its franchise manager Sean Goldsmith said: “Congratulations to Martin and Sue on opening their showroom – we’re all delighted to see the progress of the business and are looking forward to seeing it develop further. “Martin’s a great example to the rest of our franchi sees who are looking to maximise the potential of their businesses, demonstrating how commitment and vision can result in growth and development. We wish Martin and Sue all the best with their new showroom.”

We are where we are with the EU ….. The Failures of UK Politics In 1998 I had a long a detailed debate with a work colleague about the dangers of the unaccountability and lack of democracy within the EU structures. When the UK joined the EEC in 1973, the intention was Free Trade. Twenty years later, in 1993, the EEC became the EU. Since then the UK has followed and enforced EU laws and treaties which affect many parts of our lives. At 51 years old I have had the opportunity to vote in 8 General Elections and one Referendum. Only the In / Out Referendum and the last General Election have actually given anyone in the UK the opportunity to vote on or about the UKs membership in the EU. In every other election the choice was: Red with EU, Blue with the EU or Yellow with even more EU. During elections, debate on or about the EU within the two major parties was barred as each party had massive divisions about the creeping influence of EU lawmakers. We are where we are because UK politicians have failed the electorate. When you consider that at the time of the referendum 70% of elected politicians were Remainers ….

And they still lost the vote, it shows how out of touch Westminster was and is with the underpinning sentiment of the country on this issue.

What has also become clear, is how “difficult” the attitude of the EU has become since the result of the UK Referendum. The 1990 film “Misery” has for me troubling similarities. And whereas there may be some pain trying to escape, to acquiesce and remain may be considerably more disabling and damaging …… now go and see the film!

Councillors Surgery

Councillor’s Report from Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Brislington Councillors

You cannot have failed to see the huddled shapes of people lying in shop doorways, with their sleeping bags, sheets of cardboard and bag of clothes. You may have noticed tents in some of our parks and green spaces. These are signs of the terrible scourge of homelessness, which has increased drastically under the government’s austerity regime. We have a universally acknowledged housing crisis, caused by lack of sufficient affordable housing combined with the outrageous rents charged by many private landlords, who are utilising the government’s buy to let scheme to make profits. It is common practive to put up the rents every year, evict tenants on a whim and refuse to return deposits on spurious grounds of disrepair or damage. As councillors we hear horror stories from women with young children and disabled people, at risk of ending on the street. Increasingly our young people have to return to live with parents because their wages are insufficient to pay rent and bills. There is a myth that all homeless people are users of drugs and alcohol. Certainly some of the long-term homeless turn to substance abuse to dull the pain of their situation. But homelessness is not confined to such people. It is rising among both the young and the pensioner population because wages and benefits are not keeping up with rising costs.

30

Cabinet member for housing Cllr Paul Smith is working to hit targets for new housing and ensuring that new developments include reasonable proportions of affordable housing. Even better, Cllr Smith is promoting the building of new council housing, the first for some time. But this is a slow process and meanwhile increasing numbers have no home. Realising this the government has just announced a fund of £100 million to tackle rough sleeping. Inevitably new housing schemes and hostels will bring disruptions to people’s lives. Housing becomes denser, new kinds of residents move into our districts, nice views are blocked, building works are noisy and disruptive. But these hardships are surely nothing to the misery of having nowhere to live. We do hope that in our ‘City of Sanctuary, Bristolians will show compassion to the homeless; ‘There but for fortune go you or I, my friend’. Picture shows Marvin Rees, Bristol Mayor, Cllr Paul Smith Cabinet Member for Housing, Mike Langley, Councillor for Brislington East.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats

“The definition of a democracy is a form of government in which the people rule, either directly or through elected representatives.” I open my column this month with the above definition of democracy as a reminder to just how far Bristol has moved from being a representative democracy to an elective dictatorship under this mayoral system. As you may have seen in the media 50 City Councillors (and the Mayor himself) voted for the much delayed Arena to be built at Temple Meads in the heart of the City. A day later the Mayor then told us that he was cancelling Temple Meads in favour of the Filton airfield site. His actions are as perplexing as they are mysterious! So where do we go from here? Well my party has led a cross party call for the decision to be looked at again through the Council’s scrutiny call in process. We are also asking the Council’s legal officers to look at a potential breach of planning law by the Mayor in favouring the Filton airfield developer.

32

We also want to know why the Mayor has not looked at a proposal from Theatre and Concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith to build our Arena with a private partner? He has an excellent track record in working with some of the biggest names in music and was involved in organising the Live Aid concert. Of course even if the scrutiny call-in is successful in asking the Mayor to stick with Temple Meads their recommendations are only advisory and the Mayor can do what he has done with Full Council and ignore their suggestions and press ahead with his preferred scheme. A lot of time, money and energy has gone into acquiring the old marshalling yard site at Temple Meads for the Arena. A lot of effort has gone into decontaminating the site for an Arena, a bridge has been built at great public expense to service that Arena. A majority of Bristolians want that site for their new Arena. A majority of Councillors, even Labour ones want it there. So who is stopping them? One man, the Mayor Marvin Rees. For me this is not just about the siting of the most important new facility in Bristol for a generation it also highlights the lack of democratic accountability that the Mayoral system perpetuates. Our next great challenge after the Arena site is finally decided on is to campaign for the abolition of this Mayoral system and the reintroduction of local representative democracy in the City. It is long overdue.

Could you be due a care fees refund? Being faced with the prospect of needing long term care can be stressful and emotional People find themselves immersed in a whole new world of bewildering options, often accepting they will have to pay hefty care fees for the foreseeable future without a second thought. Many people exploring long term care options are often unaware of the Department of Health’s responsibility with regard to care fees. If the reason a person has gone into care is because of their health needs, then the NHS has a duty to pay their fees, this is regardless of their property, assets or savings, it is not means tested. A person can receive free NHS funding in a residential home, nursing home or even their own home, the funding is not based on placement, it’s based on health needs. In order to determine if a person is eligible for funding by the NHS, a Continuing Healthcare (CHC) Assessment is required to take place. Unfortunately, people are not assessed as a standard and families don’t realise this funding is available

At Care Fees 4U, their Healthcare specialists will support families through the process, they have already helped families to secure funding going forward and reclaim thousands of pounds already paid, even when the person has passed away, additionally if the person in care has been assessed and found not eligible initially for NHS funding, Care Fees 4U will assist families through the appeals process. Since April 2012, many people have been wrongly assessed and have been forced to pay unnecessary fees averaging around £40,000 per year Carefees 4U can help families reclaim these fees. Carefees 4u are a local company but provide a nationwide service and have experience in liaising with the Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG’s) in all areas of the country. They are representing lots of families from the local vicinity. Their team of specialists have over 10 years’ experience in NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, they offer a “FREE” consultation and work on a “NO WIN NO FEE” basis. Please note that are firms out there that will charge you upfront and also on an hourly basis even if you lose you will have to pay. With Care Fees 4U you will “NOT” have to pay anything upfront nor will you have to pay anything if you are not successful, so you have nothing to lose and everything to gain

Halloween cupcakes Ingredients 125g/4½oz plain flour 25g/1oz cocoa powder 1½ tsp baking powder 150g/5oz caster sugar 150g/5oz unsalted butter, softened at room temperature 1 free-range egg 8 tbsp milk For the cream cheese icing 50g/2oz cream cheese 25g/1oz butter, softened at room temperature 125g/4oz icing sugar, sifted ½ tsp vanilla essence For the chocolate icing 25g/1oz icing sugar 1 tbsp cocoa powder

Method 1.Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line a muffin tray with 9 paper cases. 2.Sift the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder into a bowl. Add the sugar and butter and beat the mixture together until well combined. 3.Whisk in the egg and milk until the mixture is thick and smooth. 4.Divide the mixture between the paper case and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until springy to the touch and skewer inserted into the middle of one of the cakes comes out clean. Set aside to cool on a wire rack. 5.For the cream cheese icing, beat the cream cheese and butter together in a bowl until well combined. Beat in the icing sugar and vanilla. 6.Spoon the icing onto the cupcakes, leaving a small border around the edge. 7.For the chocolate icing, sift the icing sugar and cocoa powder into a bowl. Stir in 2 tablespoons of water to form a smooth, thick icing. 8.Transfer the mixture to a piping bag with a fine nozzle. (Alternatively, spoon the mixture into the corner of a sandwich bag and snip off the corner, to form a small hole.) 9.Carefully pipe 3 concentric circles onto each cupcake. Run a toothpick from the centre to the edge of the cake, through each circle of icing, at 2cm/1in intervals to create a cobweb effect. 10.Set aside for 20 minutes to allow the icing to harden.
