Your garden in June
Come June, its pretty safe to say that the risk of frost is behind us – summer is on its way and it’s time to make sure the garden is in good shape for the summer months. The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the garden is bursting into life. This makes June a particularly busy month for the green-fingered among us with lots of planting, pruning, maintenance and weeding to do done. All our hard work is sure to be worth the effort though as we sit back and admire the onset of summer in our garden. Plant of the month Rose Why should you plant them? Roses suit all kinds of gardens –they come in huge variety of colours, shapes and scents. They can be grown in beds, borders and containers and can be grown up walls, fences and trellis.
The essential gardening jobs for June Plant baskets and containers Now the risk of morning frost has passed, its time to plant up your containers, hanging baskets and planters. If you already had them growing in the greenhouse, or hardening off outside during the day, then It’s now safe to move them out to their summer position – choosing a sunny spot will ensure you get the best from them. Trim any excess growth to maintain shape and deadhead regularly to encourage flower growth. Water at least once a day or more frequently when it’s hot dry and windy. Regular feeding – once per week in the summer – will also help your plants to thrive. Mow lawns once a week The lawn will be growing fast now and will continue to do so throughout the summer, so a good weekly cut is essential to keep it looking neat and tidy. To make sure your lawn looks its best for summer, apply a spring fertiliser onto established lawns now.
6
A good feed and a regular close cut will encourage extra growth making your lawn thick and lush. Don’t forget to reduce cutting frequency and raise mover blades if we have a drought. Care for your roses June is traditionally the month when roses are at their peak. You will need to keep an eye out for black spots and aphid attacks. Both of these will need treating immediately to ensure that too much damage doesn’t occur. Black spot is a serious disease for roses caused by a fungus which infects the leaves and reduces plant vigour, and should be treated at first sign of infection with a fungicide. Green fly are sap-sucking creatures that can alter the growth of roses, also decreasing their vigour. Treat roses that are being attacked by aphids with an insecticide. Deadhead any faded rose blooms to encourage fresh buds to grow and apply a rose fertiliser after the first flowering.
How should you plant them? Roses grown in containers can be planted all year round – check the label when buying though as their preferred spot and conditions will vary depending on the type. Dig a hole roughly twice the size of the root ball to a spade’s depth, dig in a good quality compost and fork in a general fertiliser. Plant the rose to the same depth as it was in the container, firm down and water well. Apply a rose fertiliser every spring for amazing displays of colour.

Two returning blockbuster franchises fill out the summer month of June this year as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Ocean’s 8 take to the big screen. Whether you’re in the mood for large-scale dinosaur action or want to experience one of the greatest female team-ups since Ghostbusters (2016), the pressure is on when visiting your local Cineworld.
JURASSIC WORLD FALLEN KINGDOM
The sequel to 2015’s prehistoric outing, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom kicks things off in a big way this June 6th. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both return in the lead roles to help resolve the fallout following Isla Nubar’s destruction in the previous film. Their plan? To bring all the remaining dinos roaming the island into an American sanctuary facility. However, as you’ll expect, things don’t quite go to plan. Next up is the long-awaited continuation of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, now headed up by a team of elite female fraudsters. Sandra Bullock leads the crew as Danny Ocean’s estranged sister Debbie, recently released from prison and sharing her family’s call for a great con. Intent on robbing the Anne Hathaway’s prized Jewels during the Met Gala in New York City, the Ocean’s 8 crew includes Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, and more. Community Spirits High in Chipping Sodbury
A launch party will be held on Monday 2nd July, the day the Trail starts and the Chamber will be inviting the whole town to come along wearing Gromit ears. For more details see Visit Chipping Sodbury on Facebook. As well as the large Gromit Sculpture, this summer the Chamber will be running the Chipping Sodbury Cracking Summer Search. Businesses in the high street will be displaying large plush Gromits ‘dressed’ or ‘staged’ in various activities. Searchers can pick up a free map and cross off the activities Gromit is taking part in in Chipping Sodbury, leaving one, the answer, to be handed in.
Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerceare delighted to have secured a Gromit sculpture in Gromit Unleashed 2, which will encourage locals and visitors to Chipping Sodbury over the summer. When the word got out that the Chamber were hoping to be able to raise enough money to sponsor a Gromit for the summer, 27 local independent businesses, members of Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce, 4 larger businesses, 5 charitable organisations, Sodbury Town Council and a ‘go fund me page’ for locals who had got wind of the project and wanted to get involved, all contributed money to secure the Gromit to bring attention to Chipping Sodbury and support such a wonderful charity that nearly everyone has had experience of needing the help of, whether it was for themselves, their children or their grandchildren. Gromit will be in town from July - September. After September he will be auctioned along with the other sculptures to raise money for the Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, The Grand Appeal. The design of the Gromit, to be sited in the Baptist Church Garden, is yet to be announced. There is much speculation about what it might be. The Chamber are holding a colouring competition for designers of all ages. The winners of the competition will be displayed in the window of the Town Hall. Designers are encouraged to put their design on paper and deliver them to the Tourist Information Centre by the 25th June. For more details about the colouring competition see Visit Chipping Sodbury on Facebook.
18
Each participant who hands in the completed section from the map will be given a sticker to show they have completed the search. At the end of the summer, winners will be drawn from the correctly completed tear-off sections returned. The prizes will be one of the Gromits that have appeared in windows during the Summer Search. Free trail maps will be available from the Gromit Unleashed shop at The Mall at Cribbs Causeway, selected locations across the city, in The Bristol Post, and in a number of locations throughout Chipping Sodbury at the start of July. Gromit Unleashed 2 runs from 2nd July until 2nd September. Sculptures will be spread across Bristol and the surrounding areas.

Daily Routines & Timely Meals Improve Performance There is increasing research into Circadian Rhythms – better known as Body Clocks.
8. Help your body wind down in the evening by only eating a small supper 9. Pursue leisure activities to take your mind off work at night to let your brain wind down as well 10. Plan your daily routine, monitor and record how you feel – then adjust accordingly
With new smart watches there is more data than ever available for research and some of that information is proving useful and illuminating. Regular routines – meaning getting up at about the same time, eating regular meals, having specific times for working, relaxing and ultimately sleeping is healthier for you. To help yourself you will feel and perform better if you: 1.Get into a routine and stick to it – even on weekends 2. Are active in daylight and rest in darkness 3. Expose yourself to sunshine in the morning 4. Exercise or do physical activity, if you can, around midday 5. Stop using smartphones, tablets or computer screens a couple of hours before sleeping 6. Eat meals at regular times as they can significantly impact your body clock 7. Eat larger meals earlier in the day because your . body can process the food better
