RETURN OF THE CARNIVAL By Michelle Ridgeway, a Shirehampton resident Whilst having a clear out of the loft this week, I stumbled upon a photo album with photos of Shire Carnival from the late 1980s. I remember those days well. I for one spent many a year on the back of a float dressed in a variety of fancy dress costumes whilst the procession meandered its way, starting from the hill on Station Rd, Groveleaze, Priory Rd, St Marys Rd, West Town Rd etc before trundling through the High Street back to its starting point. Residents lined the streets, collection buckets were rattling, music was blaring out whilst parents walked besides the float ensuring the children didn't fall off or want the toilet!. I was part of the 191st Dixon cub pack, alongside Roger Barnes. We spend many months in the run up to the carnival painting, preparing props for the floats and asking favours from both lorry companies in Avonmouth to unsuspecting parents. In the photo attached you may recognise a few faces, Rich Powell, Jill Williamson, my husband Neil, Dean Wotton, and Colin Williamson,

I am somewhere on the float!. It was always a great day, community spirit was high, from the very young to the elderly all seemed to enjoy themselves, which brings me to the reason for writing. Whilst walking through the village this week I spotted posters advertising 'Shire Santa Dash', seemingly a reinvention of the good old carnival days. Wouldn't it be amazing if this event brought back the community spirit that seems to have lost its way over recent times. I for one will be getting involved, albeit my knees are not upto much, so i will be walking with my grandchildren whilst reminiscing.

Best of luck to the good folk from the Christmas Lights committee, i hope the dash is a huge success, and look forward to a great lights display this year.

St Marys Church news I do hope you all had a great summer, and for all those who’ve started new schools and new jobs this autumn I hope you have settled in well. I’m really excited to let you know about our Harvest Barn Dance at the Tithe Barn on Saturday 7th October at 7:30pm. There will be fun, food, and great music, provided by the band ‘Canon Fodder’, for all ages. Do get your tickets from the church office, and we look forward to welcoming you on the night.

We also have our Christmas Fayre in November on Saturday 21st November 10am-12midday, which we hope will be great fun for all the family. We are hoping we might even have a visit from the big guy in the red suit too! Don’t forget the Tithe Barn is available each day for hire, and for those budding entrepreneurs amongst you we have two lovely offices upstairs that are also available for hire on a daily or weekly basis. Please do contact me if you would like more information on this or weddings/wedding blessings, funerals or baptisms. I work every day except Friday and the best way to get hold of me is via email: revhelenjohnson@btinternet.com otherwise do stop me in the village, I’ll be the one in the dog collar!

God bless all, Helen (Priest in charge at St Mary’s)

In November we have our special Remembrance Day service at 10am, joining with others at the Cenotaph in Shire at 11am, as we give thanks for those who have given their lives for us. On Saturday 11th November we will be having a Quiz Night in the church starting at 7.30pm.

There will be food too! More details coming – watch out for the poster on the Church noticeboard.

A highlight of the clubs season and the climax to months of competitions, played round by round is the Finals Week-End. This years was played over the week –end 9th and 10th September. First up was the Sid Holmes Handicap in which the winner is the bowler scoring 21 shots plus a handicap ascribed to each competitor before the competition commences. This year’s winner was Ken Davies who comfortably overcame David Hinksman. The Ladies Two Woods followed and that was won by Ray Cook with Julie Looker runner up. The game to decide this seasons Ladies Club Champion is the Four Wood Singles and this was a repeat of last year’s final with Dawn Evans once again playing Dee Crawley for the title. Dee was successful last season but it was Dawn who came out in front on this occasion to become Ladies Club Champion 2017 and to play in next seasons Champion of Champions. The Men’s Four Wood Singles Final --- to decide who is this seasons Men’s Club Champion was a re-match of the first game of the day ---- Ken Davies and David Hinksman playing on a different rink and with the straightforward target of 21 shots to win the game. It was a very well contested game which David Hinksman eventually won to become Men’s Club Champion 2017 and to go into next seasons Champion of Champions. The Bill Deakin Novice Trophy, open only to bowlers who have not been competition winners in previous seasons was this season between David Garrod and Julie Looker. This is a game of first to 21 shots and Julie did just that to take her first individual trophy in her first full season of bowling. The last game of the day was the Mixed Pairs Final between ---- Ken and Lis Davies and Bill Cook and Gill Hinksman. Played over 21 ends this was a keenly fought contest in which Bill and Gill came out on top to be the final winners of the first day. There was just one final played on Sunday 10th and that was a repeat of last year’s game between Marvels and A.N.Other for the Monday Night League Cup.

Played over 18 ends it was a game that could have gone either way but in the end it was A.N. Other who prevailed to reverse last year’s result and take the trophy. The winning team was captained by Dawn Evans with Bill Hatherall, Gill Hinksman and Julie Looker making up the team. What is the one trophy that nobody wants to win? It is the Wooden Spoon, awarded annually to the team finishing bottom of the Monday night league. This season there was a game played on Monday 11th September to decide who would have the dubious honour of winning the well-known spoon. So close on points were The Lads and Hits and Misses that winners of this game would avoid the spoon ---- and the loosers consigned to being c ustodians of it for a year! It was agreed to play for four points as the two teams were due to play each other twice before the season ended. What a game it was ---- 17 ends played and the scores tied at 14-14. So --- it was all on the final end. The Lads had lead for much of the game but on the last and decisive end it was Hits and Misses who took two shots and with it the four points needed to lift them off the bottom of the table. At the other end of the table ---- Marvels finished top and Exiles ---- last year’s winners --runners up. This year’s AGM will be on Thursday 2nd November at 7.45. The Annual Presentation Evening will be on Friday 1st December at Shirehampton Park Golf Club. For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713

THE WORD ON THE STREET What a load of rubbish! By Eileen Means In case you haven’t heard already, Bristol City Council in their infinite wisdom have introduced new identity criteria before any resident of our city will be permitted to make use of the two Household Recycling Centres at Avonmouth and St Philips. Be Prepared! You need to have one of the following with you in your car/van; Photo ID AND proof of residence Photo ID And a Council Tax Bill  Photo ID And a Utility Bill  Photo Travelcard And Council Tax or Utility Bill  Student ID

  

Just as 1+1 makes 2 and 2+2 makes 4, Fly-tipping will increase. The Recycling Centres resemble the queues at Harrods sale at weekends when people and cars are queuing up to use them. Predictably, there will be an increase in fly-tipping in nearby streets whereby people who have queued up to dump their household and garden waste find that they are not allowed to do so because they do not have the correct documentation. One of Mayor Marvin Rees’s key policies is the Clean Streets campaign; the streets of Bristol will be measurably cleaner by 2020. Will this really happen if making it more difficult to behave responsibly by taking waste to the “tip” is fraught with difficulties? And are there really that many people in our neighbouring authorities who would travel to Bristol to dump an old mattress if they had the opportunity?

Like we all, all of the time, keep our Council tax or utility bills in our glove compartment of our car. Plus in 2017 many of us pay these bills by Direct Debit, so do not have paper bills. And just think how helpful it will be to any car thief who steals your vehicle, they can steal your identity too!! Now, we all appreciate that Bristol City Council is experiencing severe cuts due to this Conservative Central Government’s austerity policy, but this need for complex resident proof of identity, more than is necessary to get into this Country, is likely to cost more than it saves.

It will be interesting to see if Bristol’s Recycling targets continue to be met or whether they fall now that residents of this city need to prove that they really, truly live within the city boundaries. Watch this space!

Card Payments: Chip & Pin not Chip & Pain For many traders and retailers, offering card payments is viewed as a necessary evil, however armed with some knowledge and understanding of what the options and requirements are of having a “chip & pin” machine then you should be able to offer your customers a cost effective and reliable solution.

Why should I accept card payments ? In 2015, for the first time in, well, history in the UK, more customers paid by card than cash. We are becoming an increasingly cashless society; fewer people carry cash on them preferring the convenience and speed of contactless card payments (in the first 6 months of this year there has been an increase of 162% vs LY in the number of contactless payments alone) as well as, when required, the security of inputting their pin numbers into a recognised chip and pin terminal. Some retailers (barbers and fish and chip shops seem to be prevalent amongst them) prefer to only accept cash payments however as well as meeting the aforementioned customer needs there are also sound financial reasons why every retailer should do so e.g. many banks (still) charge their business customers up to 2% for the privilege of handing cash into their (own) accounts. Therefore as long as merchants’ card rates are less than this fee then they will actually be saving money by accepting card payments. And in this day and age, even with a current low bank savings rate, it still provides a safer and more cost effective alternative to stuffing it under the mattress !

PCI stands for Payment Card Industry which is essentially the Mastercard and Visa of this world i.e. the card provider who partner with the merchant banks to enable their cards to be used to accept payments through the banks’ terminals. They also usually charge the banks an authorisation fee (typically about 3p per transaction) as well as a monthly “PCI Fee” to ensure the terminal remains updated and continues to offer secure transactions. On top of this they also require every merchant to complete an annual DSS (Data Security Standards) Compliance report proving that consumer card details are securely processed. Some card providers do offer a Compliance report service to their merchants so it is often worth asking about this when considering payment solutions.

I understand no-one will be able to place a surcharge on card payments from next year ? That’s right. From Jan’2018 it will be illegal for a trader or retailer to surcharge (typically anything up to 50p!) their customers for paying by card. The only reason that retailers should need to do this is if their card payment provider is charging them very high card rates. However the Government wish to stop the consumer having to pick up the bill for a merchant’s card charges. Talk to your card provider about how to minimise your card charges and increase your customer service.

Isn’t it a lot of hassle ? Setting up an account to offer card payment solutions is very easy and once this has been achieved the only regular requirement is to complete an annual PCI DSS Compliance report. What’s one of those ?

Offering card payments should be an essential and yet hassle free and cost effective part of every retailer and traders offer to their customers. Armed with the above knowledge and understanding hopefully they should be able to do so.

THE PREVIEW By Aaron Potter A chill might be setting in this October, but

things are only continuing to heat up at your local Cineworld thanks to the abundance of new releases. From spine-tingling crime thrillers, block-based animated features, to colourful Superhero fun, the weather outside is frightful, but these movies are so delightful! Kicking us off on the 13th October is the latest entry in the wildly successful Lego series. This time providing some cinematic sheen to the world of Ninjago, it’ll be swords, dragons, and ninja words a plenty when an evil overlord threatens the land. The cast includes the likes of Jackie Chan, Dave Franco and Olivia Munn, so you know they’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Releasing the very same day is chilling investigative drama The Snowman, headed up by the always reliable Michael Fassbender. This time taking on the role of Detective Harry Cole, when an elusive serial killer makes his presence known, the race is on to catch him in time. And finally, on 24th October is the intergalactic road trip movie you never knew you needed in the third sequel to Marvel’s Thor franchise: Ragnarok. Taking place four years after The Dark World, this time Thor is forced to bump fists with fellow avenger Hulk, before setting his sights on Cate Blanchett’s deathly goddess Hera. And if you simply don’t want to let the action end this October simply fly over to our Facebook page @directocal to enter more movie merchandise competitions thanks to Cineworld Bristol.

There’s plenty to see and experience before the scares set in on Halloween, so be sure not to miss it all.
