Your garden in May
Spring is well under the way now. The spring bulbs are fading and the herbaceous border is growing in leaps and bounds. The May days are longer and warmer and the risk of frost should have gone by now. The idea of getting out in the garden during the fine weather and ‘ticking things off the list’ becomes much more appealing. Spring flowering bulbs and plants will need clearing in preparation for summer bedding, and its promise of colour to come. But don’t get overwhelmed by those seemingly endless list of gardening jobs – here are our three most important…
Plant of the month Geranium
The essential gardening jobs for May Plant summer bedding May is the month to get your summer bedding started in borders and containers. If planting borders lift out old plants run a fork through the soil and add a good fertilizer before replanting summer plants.
Remove around a third of the oldest flowering stems – this will make the plant look better and encourage new growth to create a good display next year. Be sure to check large shrubs and hedges for nesting birds before you start chopping!
Try to fill pots and containers in the position they are going to stay – they can become heavy when filled! Water retaining crystals will help to reduce the amount of watering and keep the compost moist during warmer periods. Don’t forget to feed with fertiliser during flowering period.
Plant out young veg Marrow, courgette and sweetcorn are all ready to be sown in the greenhouse. The likes of brussel sprouts, kale, peas and swede should be okay covered outside.
Prune evergreen hedges and spring flowering shrubs There’s no better time to give evergreen hedges a trim to get them looking neat and tidy. Smaller hedges can be tackled with a pair of shears, but you may need a hedge trimmer for larger bushes. Prune any shrubs that flowered in spring as soon as they have finished flowering. Broom, forsythia and ribes all need pruning now.
6
If you have already own tomatoes, move them outside to harden them off. Keep them outside during the day and bring them back inside at night for two weeks to acclimatize them. If you have potatoes that are starting to emerge, pull a few inches of earth around the plant with a rake to give the plant more soil to grow.
Enjoy your garden!
Why should you plant them? Geraniums make popular bedding plants – either in the garden or in pots and hanging baskets. They thrive outdoors in the summer but are also great for using a houseplant. They look good planted in a group in a flowerbed all by themselves or mixed in with other annuals – the perfect plant for any spot that calls for a splash of colour throughout the season. How should you plant them? Geraniums need to be grown in well draining soil or if planting in pots a good quality free draining compost. They should be located in a bright spot in the garden that gets plenty of sunshine. Soil should be allowed to dry between watering to avoid root rot.

The top 3 movies For May
Solo Whether you’re in the mood for revisiting a galaxy far, far away with an old friend, unexpected bonds between mother and baby-sitter, or the return of Marvel’s self-aware Merc with a Mouth, there’s something for everyone hitting the silver screens at Cineworld this May. Yes, the sun might finally be out, but it’s really the cinemas where things are heating up. Kicking us off on May 4th is Charlize Theron’s Tully, a new comedy-drama which has already got critics excited due to an overwhelming reception at this year’s Sundance festival. Theron plays mother of three Marlo, a woman who finds herself challenged by the unlikely bond she builds with the introduction of a young nanny known as Tully. Slap bang in the middle of May on the 15th is the supercharged sequel Deadpool 2. Promising more R-rated action, plenty of sharp-edged humour, along with a much grander sense of scale this time around, the X-Force will need to overcome their comedic differences to help protect a young mutant from Josh Brolin’s time-traveling soldier Cable. Finally, rounding us out for the month on May 24th is the origin story of the Star Wars’ resident smuggler in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Han and his team are challenged with pulling off the biggest heist of the century right from under the eyes of the empire. Cineworld Yate and Direct Local Magazine similarly team up once more to give viewers a chance to win 2 free cinema tickets. Just fill out the next page crossword. Balance your fun in the sun with fun in the cinema throughout the whole of May!

Gorgeous Cherry Cheesecake Ingredients
For the base 200g pack shortbread biscuits 50g melted butter For the cake 2 x 300g tub soft cheese, Philadelphia is good 1 tsp vanilla extract 175g golden caster sugar 2 tbsp plain flour 2 eggs For the topping 50g golden caster sugar 400g cherry, pitted
18
Instructions
Heat the oven to 160C/fan 140C/gas 3. Grease and line a loose-sided metal terrine tin (27 x 10cm, 7cm deep) or a similar size loaf tin with baking parchment. Tip the shortbread into a food processor and blitz into crumbs, then pour in the butter and continue to whizz until it’s the texture of smooth peanut butter. Press the shortbread mix into the base of tin. Beat the cheese, vanilla extract and sugar until smooth then beat in the flour and eggs until completely combined – this can be done by hand or in a food processor. Pour the mix over the biscuit base and smooth with a spatula. Bake for about 1 hr until just completely set and tinged brown at the edges. Leave to cool out of the fridge, then refrigerate until completely cold. While the cake is cooling sprinkle the sugar into a frying pan and place over a high heat until caramelised. Throw in the cherries and stew in the sugar for 3-4 mins until they are sticky and have released their juices, but haven’t collapsed too much. Leave to cool, then strain the cherry juice back into the pan. Place on a high heat and reduce the juice to a sticky syrup, set aside to cool. To serve, gently release the cake from the mould onto a board and leave at room temperature for 30 mins. Just before serving spoon the cherries over, drizzle with the syrup and cut into slices.

BRISTOL BREAKFAST NETWORKING TO SET UP IN THE NORTH OF THE CITY Independent business group Bristol
He said: “The group’s had an unprecedented level of growth over the past two years and, with 40 members meeting regularly, it’s not practical to have any more in one room.
Set up 18 years ago for the benefit of small business owners in Bristol area, the original group has enjoyed spectacular growth in membership over recent months and has reached capacity at its current home in Ashton Gate Stadium.
“Our model’s proving to be really attractive – we meet fortnightly rather than weekly, without much of the pressure and formality associated with some other networking organisations.
Breakfast Networking (BBN) has announced the launch of a new fortnightly meeting for the northern part of the city.
The group’s committee is now launching a new regular breakfast meeting at The Manor at Old Down Estate in Tockington in South Gloucestershire. It’s exciting news for the small business community in the northern part of Bristol, especially for those looking to forge connections and receive quality referrals to new clients and customers. The northern and southern BBN meetings are arranged for fortnightly breakfasts on alternate Thursday mornings, with the new group having its inaugural session on May 17th. The initial group is currently chaired by Matt Richardson, owner of corporate gifts firm Recognition Express.
20
“We’ve had so many enquiries from prospective members and we felt the time was right to launch Bristol Breakfast Networking north of the city.” BBN was founded by Chris Holloway, owner of Manor Printing Services in Wotton-under-Edge, and management accountant David Johnson back in 2000. Since then it has seen many millions of pounds in business passed between its members, including some £800,000 in the past 12 months alone. With a membership standing at 40 small business owners at the meetings, the turnover makes each seat at the breakfast meeting worth in excess of £20,000 in new business per year, with more being passed online.
