City and Port of Bristol Bowling Club
Season 2022 was one of change and 2023 will see more changes in who does what at the club.
The Annual General Meeting took place on Tuesday October 25th in the Ballroom at the PBA Social and Sports Club. It was well attended --- twenty nine members were present. David Hinksman who assumed the role of Chairman when Lis Davies stood down in June opened the meeting by thanking everybody for attending and later in the meeting thanked everyone who had made a contribution to the club in any way during season 2022. A period of silence was observed in memory of Gill Gibson who passed away in March. After bowling for many years at Avonmouth Gill came to the City and Port Club and was enthusiastic and cheerful in all that she did.

Reports from captains and the week end coordinator painted a mixed but generally upbeat and optimistic picture of the 2022 season. Mixed Friendly Fixtures are well in hand for 2023 and the Men’s and the Ladies League Teams will play in their respective leagues. Monday evenings will see the same four teams competing for league and cup honours as in the previous season. A decision to return to wearing white below the waist for all afternoon friendly games was made. Greys have been worn to avoid using changing rooms during and since Covid restrictions imposed by Bowls England. There will be a number of different names in important positions for season 2023.David Hinksman was ratified as Chairman. Bill Hatherall will continue as Treasurer as well as Men’s League Captain and City and County of Bristol Delegate, Phil Cormack continues as Fixtures
Secretary. Flo Grimes continues as Women’s Delegate to the GBA and, with David Hinksman Safeguarding Officer.
Gill Hinksman stood down from her role as Ladies League Captain at the end of the season after a number of years doing what is often a challenging job. Mary Lomas will be Ladies Captain next season.
Ray Cook stood down from her job as Wednesday Captain having done it for a number of years. In her final captains report she reported eight wins from sixteen games played and she was pleased to record the fact that she did not cancel a game all season. Opposing teams did cancel six games for a variety of reasons --- but Ray played every game that it was possible to play. Nick Burand who was captain of the day at weekends on numerous occasions last season has become Wednesday Captain for 2023. Gill Hinksman coordinated week end teams in 2022 --- a job she referred to as interesting --- and it worked very well. But there will be a weekend captain next season --- Lynn Burand was nominated and elected at the meeting. Well done Nick and Lynn.
The meeting ended with no nominations for the posts of Secretary and Competition Secretary but in the days that followed the meeting Stephen Ash agreed to take on the role as Secretary and Gill Hinksman will be Competition Secretary. Both will be ratified at the Start of Season in March. The club is still looking for a Health and Safety Officer and importantly --- a President. A date to look forward to is April 15th 2023 --- the first game of the new season --- against Bristol St.Andrews. The club will once again offer free trial sessions to anybody who would like to try bowling in 2023. There will be sessions for children over the age of six and it is hoped that a junior section will be formed --- shirts and all. The Bristol After Stroke Club came to the green and had a great time twice in 2022. They will be back in 2023. Not only club members but also members of the organising team tried their hand at bowling --- some for the first time --- and it was great to see how much they enjoyed it. For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 07932 387217. The club would like to thank everybody who took an interest in it during the past year.
