Editors words Welcome to December edition of Direct Local This is quite possibly my favorite month of the year lots on this month in your local areas such as Christmas parties, local lights switch ons, pantomimes and much more. Oh and did I mention drinking lots of mulled wine and mince pies. The other day in fact I was in Westbury on Trym and smelt the wonderful smell of mince pies from the Parsons bakery, I just had to buy one or two or three.. On a serious note though lets spare a thought for the homeless people in Bristol who struggle just to keep themselves warm yet alone enjoy the festive season. Date for the diary this month folks is the 24th December around about 11:59pm as thats when Santa Claus jumps on his sleigh and starts his run delivering all the wonderful gifts to all the kids . Personally i am a big kid and get up around 1am and start unwrapping gifts, well thats until my wife creeps down the stairs and tells me to get back to bed as its too early. Anyway I want to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. See ya in 2020 folks... Disclaimer

Nightly at 7.30pm & Saturday Matinee 2.30pm Redgrave Theatre, Clifton. BS8 3LE Tickets from www.bristolgsos.co.uk

Observe the relentless ambition and greed of the power-hungry couple as it is nurtured and guided by the supernatural to its ultimate end. Come face to face with the witches, witness Macbeth’s ascension to the throne, and partake in Lady Macbeth’s banquet to celebrate their successes. But beware what ghosts of the past lurk near. Opera in a Box is delighted to be returning to the Loco Klub, after last year’s acclaimed production of The Magic Flute, to perform Macbeth. As a touring opera company in the South West of the UK aimed at bringing the opera genre to as wide an audience as possible, we encourage you to take all of your preconceptions about opera and throw them out of the window! Experience this tragic tale of greed up-close in our intimate adaptation with our cast of talented performers. Director Marianne Vivash says “Most people will know the story of Macbeth from studying Shakespeare at school, but the addition of Verdi’s powerful score adds a whole new level to the storytelling. The hugely atmospheric setting of the Temple Mead tunnels allows for us to be even more imaginative as we use the space to its full advantage. Our audience will even join in the famous banquet scene with canapes and a drink provided!” Sam Baker, the Musical Director of Macbeth, also adds “We love working with Opera in a Box, as no idea, or setting, or venue is off limits. By discarding the stereotypes of opera, we can entirely focus on the music and storytelling, and our audiences are discovering a passion for opera that wasn’t there before! It’s a really exciting venture.” Opera in a Box’s production of Macbeth will be performed in a promenade setting, and will require the audience to move through the tunnels and stand for a period of approximately 15mins. Some seating is available on request. There are minimal steps in the tunnel, but the floor is uneven. Please dress appropriately for the venue. A drink and canapé are included in the price as we welcome you to the banquet!

City & Port of Bristol Bowls Club Is there a sport that can be played all year round, by men and women of all ages and all abilities, helps to keep you fit and finds you new friends? It offers you a challenge and the chance to learn a new skill in pleasant and safe surroundings. The answer is yes and the sport ---- bowls!! The City and Port of Bristol Club bowls outdoors on the green in Nibley Road from Mid-April until Late September, and away on greens in and around Bristol --- sometimes a little further away --- the 2020 Summer Tour will be based in Eastbourne .

The first of these games was played on Saturday November 2nd against the formidable Indoor Club Team. Playing on six rinks and supported by players from other clubs an enjoyable afternoon ended with the hosts running out comfortable winners. At the end of the game there was a meal, a drink and the chance to have a chat about the game and all things bowls.

When the outdoor season comes to an end bowling moves indoors, and in Bristol we are fortunate to have the City and County of Bristol Indoor Club in BS3. Opening in 2000 the club boasts nine rinks, about 750 members and excellent catering facilities. During the Winter Season the club is open seven days a week and has hosted some prestigious games over the years. In April 2020 some of the World Indoor Finals will be played there.

There will be two Sunday evening social events this Winter ---- on January 26th and on March 29th both at the City and Port of Bristol Club. Between these dates will be the Annual Winter Bowling Break, early in March and once again at the TLH in Torquay. This is not just a bowling break but also the chance to enjoy the wide range of facilities that the hotel group has to offer --- anyone for a swim and a steam?

A number of City and Port Bowlers are members of the Indoor Club, bowl several times each week and at week –ends. There are Friendly games against other clubs on Saturdays and Sundays --- home and away, so bowling is available just as often as during the summer outdoor season. The City and Port club plays three friendly games at the Indoor Club during the outdoor close season. This provides the opportunity for predominantly outdoor bowlers to try their hand on a surface very different to grass.

There is also time to explore Torquay and the surrounding area. Torquay has an excellent bus service --- Brixham and Babbacombe are two destinations a short bus ride away and both well worth a visit.

8

The next game will be on Saturday January 18th and the final one on Saturday February 29th --both starting at 6.15pm.

For further information about the club and its activities please call David Hinksman on 0117 9082713. One final thought ----New Year’s resolution time will be along shortly ---- so why not resolve to try bowls next summer!!

BRISTOL LOCAL CHRISTMAS MARKET (BROADMEAD - right by the Galleries)

CHRISTMAS MARKET The Original Bristol Blue Glass are back again this year and can't wait to see you all. We have baubles, jewellery, vases, and plenty of gift ideas for all Tel: 0117 972 0818 29th November - 23rd December

SUSTAINING SOCIAL ENTERPRISE Shopping at Emmaus Bristol is not just about locating that delightful ornament, Edwardian chest of drawers or classic Elvis track on Vinyl (although it definitely is about those things!) It’s also about knowing that, with every purchase, you’re helping to sustain the work that Emmaus companions regularly site as one of the most important aspects of being part of their community. Experiencing homelessness can bring with it a range of complex issues, among which can often be a loss of self-confidence and sense of self-worth. Bristol companions have been proving (to themselves) that they have what it takes to operate increasingly successful retail, furniture collection, delivery, house clearance and warehousing services.

We are back again this year and can't wait to see you all. We'll have our handmade baubles, baubles and more baubles (especially the NEW limited edition mini Aurora ones!). We'll also have lots of baubles, jewellery, vases, and plenty of gift ideas for all - come and say hello Bristol (and don't forget, we are also on the High Street and Bath Road).

The pride in their work is tangible, and you only have to pop into one of our shops for a rummage to see that buying pre-loved goods from Emmaus Bristol not only provides your home with instant character, but also supports the ongoing reestablishment of personal character for many companions. As well as retail, we are also supporting several companions through City & Guilds qualifications to provide an external Portable Appliance Testing service. This is an electrical safety testing service, which all organisations are encouraged to carry out regularly to ensure the ongoing safety of their equipment; from monitors and microwaves to printers and paper shredders. If you would like to donate a once treasured item to Emmaus Bristol for us to sell in one of our shops, or for more information on any of our services, contact Xanne via socialenterprise@emmausbristol.org.uk. Emmaus Bristol has three shops: Upper York St, Stokes Croft, 72 Bedminster Parade and a vintage boutique at 332 Gloucester Road 13

Arena plan is music to the ears of Bristol hoteliers

Bristol hoteliers have welcomed plans to build the UK’s third-largest entertainments arena in a former aircraft hangar in Filton. Malaysian investment firm YTL this week unveiled its vision for a multi-million pound 17,080-capacity arena in the former Brabazon Hangar – birthplace of Concorde. It would be third only to the O2 in London, and the Manchester arena, in terms of capacity. The hangar, built in 1946, has been empty since 2009 but could enjoy a new lease of life as a world class venue. The proposals include the adjoining east and west hangars being transformed into Festival Hall, a break-out area for the main arena show which could also be used for trade shows, exhibitions, conventions and other events, and ‘The Hub’, a place to eat, work and play, with leisure facilities, food and drink and home to small or start-up businesses. The Bristol Hoteliers Association (BHA), which represents 40 major hotels in the city, has welcomed the proposals. Raphael Herzog, BHA’s acting chair, said: “The developers have spoken about this being a 365-day-of-the-year venue, which would be an amazing addition to the city’s cultural offering, and create a lot of interest from people visiting the area. “Major events like a big-name music concert provide only a brief boost to business when they happen. But if the plans really do involve attracting significant numbers of people all year round, then that has tremendous potential for the local economy.” Initial plans for a Bristol Arena were announced in March 2003, which would see the creation of a 10,000-seat venue near Temple Meads railway station. These plans were abandoned in 2007. Two years later the idea of an arena being built was revived with both the Temple Quarter area and Ashton Vale being considered. The former became the preferred site in 2012, with talks of a 12,000seat facility.

14

In November 2017 the Brabazon Hangar was named as a potential alternative site for an arena and less than a year later, Mayor Marvin Rees scrapped plans for a venue at Temple Quarter. Mr Herzog added: “There has been considerable debate for years over whether an arena should be in the city centre or at Filton, and both locations have their advantages and disadvantages. “There is no doubt that an arena of this size could attract some huge names, which will draw many people from far and wide, and it’s therefore important that accommodation providers throughout the city are able to benefit from this influx of visitors. “Efficient transport links between the centre and Filton could help provide a huge boost to the local economy and encourage people to choose central accommodation. “They would then travel to the arena for the event but then also be in the ideal position to explore the many other attractions and places of interest in the city. “An arena of the size being proposed will be a major boost for Bristol; there just needs to be a co-ordinated effort to ensure there is the correct transport infrastructure so people are encouraged to venture further than the venue itself and spend some time – and money – in other parts of this beautiful city. “It is imperative that our local councillor’s work together to ensure the planning application is supported. Whilst Bristol is well known for its cultural and music heritage, a venue like this will put Bristol firmly on the map as a world class concert destination. “It also represents a significant step forward in the plans to re-develop the former Filton airfield and create a vibrant new community, a place where people will aspire to live, work and visit.” The Bristol Hoteliers Association represents 40 major hotels in the city, with around 4,000 rooms. Hotels put £200 million into the local economy.

HOW TO HEAT YOUR HOME AND BE ECO-FRIENDLY THIS WINTER Sales of woodburners have increased rapidly over the last few years, but there is a way to keep your home toasty this winter while being more eco-friendly.

“We switched to buying kiln dried logs from Bristol Firewood because as well as reducing pollution they also burn much hotter and more efficiently and so we find ourselves using fewer – and there’s not been a creepy crawly in sight!”

Our wood burner no longer has black glass and I have been pleased to find that our fireside log basket is now free of bugs!” For more information visit www.bristolfirewood.com

Your Garden In December Most gardeners tend to think that everything the garden is dormant in December. While this does tend to be the case there are still crops, plants and wildlife to protect from any winter frosts. The lawn will need to be kept clear of any remaining leaves and patio containers will need raising to avoid them sitting in the wet. The beginning of the month, however, will probably be dedicated to decorating the Christmas tree. For many people this is an essential part of their festive traditions and there’s nothing quite like a real Christmas tree to decorate a room and fill the home with that nostalgic seasonal aroma...

Potted/pot Grown Trees

Most people buy cut Christmas trees, but it is possible to buy ‘potted’ or ‘pot grown’ trees. If you want to keep your tree after Christmas to pot on or plant in the garden always ask for a pot-grown tree. Potted Christmas trees have usually been grown in the ground and then dug up and potted with a few roots. They generally won’t last much longer than a well cared for cut tree, and usually won’t establish in the garden afterwards. Pot grown trees have been grown in the pot and so many are more likely to be successful for growing on from year to year.

Hello and Happy Christmas from Shire Methodist We are looking forward to many Christmas events this December. Please come along and join us. On Sunday 1st, we will gather for Morning Worship as usual at 11am and encourage the Santa Dashers along the High Street. Monday 2nd , 2pm, is our Film Club tea. On Sunday 8th, 5pm, we will join the Cotswold Christian Community at the Cotswold Centre, Dursley Road, for carols and Christingles. On Sunday 22nd, our 3.30pm candle-lit carol service will be led by KiGglle (our young people’s group). Christmas Day will be celebrated with Morning Worship from 10am. We will end the year by joining our friends at Horfield Methodist Church for Morning Worship on Sunday 29th: please note there will not be a service at Shirehampton Methodist Church on that day. Another key event this December is a general election. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, gave some very helpful advice almost 250 years ago. “To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy; to speak no evil of the person they voted against; to take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”

We hire out our building to many local groups. If you are interested in hiring our premises please call 0117 982 0586. For more info about our church see https://shiremethodist.org/ May God’s peace be with you all during December. Everyone at Shire Methodist

Equity Release Myth Busters Here is our guide to bust some of those myths about releasing equity and provide you with some facts:

With a lifetime mortgage, the most popular method of releasing equity from your home, you will not have to sell any part of it to anyone. The lender will release the funds once a charge is secured on your home, the same as a normal residential mortgage you may have had previously, and you are entitled to carry on living in your home for the rest of your life.

“I cannot leave an inheritance for my family” False

“I will leave a debt for my loved ones if I go ahead with equity release” - False

Equity release will reduce the value of your estate it will not prevent you from leaving an inheritance for your loved ones. You can even opt for a guaranteed percentage your home value to be left to your beneficiaries.

This is not the case. Equity release plans now come with a “no negative equity guarantee”. This means you or your estate will never be asked to repay more than the value of your property, even if the amount owed is greater. We will not recommend a plan to you that does not offer such protection.

“If I release equity from my home now I will not be able to move in future” - False Equity release lenders will allow you to move your loan from one property to another. However, it should be noted that there are certain instances when it may not be possible to transfer your loan from one home to the next. The lenders have strict property criteria so you will need to check with your lender to make sure your new home can act as acceptable security. “I will have to hand over my deeds and will not own my own home any-more” - False

“Equity release is not for everyone” - True Equity release may well not be the right option for you at this time, we understand that everyone is different. Our job is to make sure you know everything you need to, before making any decisions. Rest assured, if we do not think it is the right choice for you, we will say so. You can therefore make informed decisions.

A Lifetime Mortgage could help you in retirement We’ll provide the canvas... ...Paint the future you deserve Contact us for qualifed and impartial advice

Call us on 0800 2545169 or find us at www.laterlife-lending.co.uk This is a lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration. Our typical advice fee would be £600. A lifetime mortgage may impact your entitlement to means tested benefits and the inheritance you may leave.
