Happy New Year! Have you started your new years resolutions yet? Or have you destroyed them in the first few days ? Statistics say that more than 40% of us will set a weight loss goal and 30% of us will decide to do more exercise. The other 10% will set no goals for this new year. However more shocking is that 80% of the population will give up on their new years resolutions by 1st of February and return to their old ways. On a brighter note as of now the nights will start to get a little bit bearable and brighter thanks to Winter Solstice that took place on 22nd December. Also we all start to plan our next big summer holiday or a small get away, if you want some top tips please read our piece from The Travel Councilors Charlie Dyson on page 20. He has some great ideas to travel to Lisbon, Mauritius and Japan. I hope you make 2020 the best year yet and achieve all your goals and resolutions Happy New Year !!

2. The City – Lisbon. The Portuguese capital is one of my favourite cities in Europe. Offering narrow cobbled streets, ancient ruins, a lively nightlife with an excellent food scene and stunning panoramic views from one of its seven hilltops. Lisbon really is the perfect location for a weekend or short break. It also offers excellent value with some great hotels at a fraction of the cost of some of Europe’s other capital cities. 3. The Beach – Mauritius. Thinking of Mauritius automatically conjures up images of pristine white sand beaches, blue seas and relaxing with a cocktail in hand. However, this diverse island has a lot more to offer. Spend a couple of weeks here and as well as switching-off on the beach at one of the myriad luxury resorts or in a private villa, you can also spend time in the Black River Gorges National Park witnessing dramatic waterfalls, rare bird species and the luscious green forests of the highlands.

Top tips for achieving your 2020 goals A new year often brings with bit thoughts of a fresh start, this is especially true in the health of business where after the indulgence of Christmas new health goal are particularly popular. However many New Year’s resolutions don’t make it to February. So if you’ve already started your goals or are planning on starting something soon, here are just two ideas that may help you achieve them in 2020.

It is always better to have something to aim for than heading off without plan.

Keep an accurate track of your results. So much emphasis is put on what the scales say, but I find this way of measuring a person’s progress to be completely flawed and highly disheartening. What are we actually trying to measure? FAT! So why do we weigh the bones, the hair, the skin, the muscles and the fluids all together and make determining Be realistic with you goal in short term. I’ve always prided myself that we live in a city where prejudice and discrimination is something that is rare and part of our rather uncomfortable past, but for many people such abuse is very much part of the present. I was told that many people feel unable to talk openly about their faith for fear of reprisals. They also need CCTV cameras outside the building in case of physical attack or vandalism. It’s bad enough when ordinary people are abusive towards those of different religions or backgrounds, but when those attacks come from our elected representatives, this is very much worse. You can imagine my horror when my ward partner, Andrew Varney, drew my attention to an alleged anti-semitic comment from a local Labour councillor, demonstrating once again how that party has not got to grips with the issue of anti-semitism.

Many have started families here, have made Bristol their home and contribute positively to our city. When I give my welcome speech, I always tell them that Bristol is a place where we embrace many ethnic origins, creeds and religions and where racism has no place. In all seriousness, how can I say this when even some of our elected representatives, from the prime minister to local councillors, don’t believe it? SLIMMERS LOSE TONS OF WEIGHT IN 2019 Super slimmers in South Bristol have lost over 34 Tons in weight – that’s the equivalent of 34 Cars!. All together the members of these groups have lost an incredible 5322 stones in the last year. The members, who attend groups every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Ali Hacker and her partner Stuart have lost over 15 stones between them in the last 12 months following the Extra Easy plan. She says: “Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means you’re never hungry so I’ve never felt as though I was on a diet. Before we joined Slimming World we thought losing weight meant going to the gym and counting calories. But now I know it’s about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active and Stuart loves that he can still have chips every night! “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives, some people have probably even saved their lives. It’s brilliant to celebrate together as well because that’s how we’ve been losing weight – together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. There is nothing like #that feeling of losing weight! “The support and inspiration we get from our Consultant has also been integral to our success. She understands the ups and downs of slimming and can offer us help and advice based on her own experience, without her I don’t think I’d have achieved nearly as much.” Kelly one of the local consultants says: “I’m delighted that our members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a big difference to their lives and to their whole families’ lives, and all of them are happier and healthier now. Slimming has never been more important 55.6% of people living in Bristol are overweight or obese and, as a team, my colleagues and I just want to help even more people to make real changes for life – there’s no better job satisfaction than that!” for more information go to www.slimmingworld. co.uk or call Sarah Bryant on 07879 443888 for details of local groups.

Operetta club locks themselves in the Tower of London - and sings their way out, at the Redgrave Theatre Capital punishment, imprisonment under false charges, and unrequited love are themes that Gilbert and Sullivan manage to transform into comic opera in their work The Yeomen of the Guard which is coming to the Redgrave Theatre in April 2020, performed by Bristol Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic Society (BGSOS). Set in the Tower of London during the reign of King Henry VIII, The Yeomen of the Guard tells the story of the war hero Colonel Fairfax, unjustly framed, imprisoned, and condemned to death for sorcery, and the plot hatched by fellow war hero Sergeant Meryll and his daughter, Phoebe, to free Colonel Fairfax from the Tower of London by disguising him as one of the guardians of the Tower itself: the famous Yeomen of the Guard. The Yeomen of the Guard opened at the Savoy Theatre on 3rd October 1888. It was triumph for composer Arthur Sullivan who had long complained of the plots that WS Gilbert was providing him. Sullivan wanted less absurdity in the stories and something more weighty.

Gilbert eventually came up with the plot for The Yeomen of the Guard and Sullivan thankfully approved. The result is a complex, witty and characterful operetta sure to delight audiences, whether or not they have criminal intentions. “Victorian critics considered the score to be Sullivan’s finest”, says musical director William Stevens, who is in charge of the music for the first time, at BGSOS. “Sullivan’s Yeomen overture is the best structured of the genre, rather than being just a collection of the best tunes of the work”. Yeomen is director Sarah Nash’s second show at the helm. “this opera is Gilbert and Sullivan’s darkest and probably most engaging work and it’s my challenge to bring The Tower and characters to life”, she says. “We have a wonderful talented cast and crew who will be doing the work justice, if I’m permitted to plagiarise one of Gilbert’s many delicious puns.” So why not come along and join us for torture, beheading, a jester, a jailor and the occasional marching on the spot? BGSOS is performing The Yeomen of the Guard 1st - 4th April 2020, with a matinee performance on Saturday 4th April, where children are especially invited, with an opportunity to meet the cast afterwards. Councillors Corner By Tim Rippington, Labour candidate for councillor for Brislington East This is a difficult time for Labour members and supporters in the city. We have had the door of a General Election briefly pushed open, showing us the many opportunities that a Labour government would bring to our city, before having it rudely slammed in our faces. So many issues that might have been resolved, from housing and transport to mental health and social care, will now carry on as before, with underfunding and a lack of desire for change from Central Government. What this means is that our Labour Council will have an even tougher fight on its hands to deliver the kind of fair, sustainable city that we strive for. Our Libraries and Children’s Centres will no doubt come under renewed threat as finances are squeezed further. There will also be calls to slash funding for things like Council Tax Benefit, to make the poorest in our city even poorer while the richest continue to benefit from the profits of privatised services such as water, energy and the railways. We will continue to have to work under a privatised transport system which sees First Bus hold a monopoly whilst continuing to cut vital services such as the 36, which was only rescued in December after I ran a campaign to protest the proposed cuts and the Mayor stepped in to agree to subsidise it, at least for the time being. This is the environment that a Labour Council has had to work under for four years, with 60% cuts to its budget forcing multiple rises to Council Tax just to keep vital services running. And despite the new government’s promises, this environment is set to continue for another five years.

18

This is why it is so vital that we re-elect a Labour Council in May 2020 to work alongside our four Labour MPs, to protect Bristol’s most vulnerable citizens whilst at the same time working to make the city a cleaner, better to place for everyone to live in. This fight starts right now, with the By-Election in Brislington East on 16th January, in which I am proud to be standing as Labour’s candidate. If elected, I promise to do all I can to help meet these goals and this vision for our city. Your Garden in January

The garden in January needs to be prepared for all sorts of weathers, and if you’ve been following our advice over the last few months, your hard work is done for now. Most plants are dormant this month as they sleep through the cold weather, but there are still a few things to do in the garden. Spring is just around the corner and work can be done to prepare for the warmth of the new season. When its not too cold, beds and boarders can be dug over and lawn edges can be repaired and re-shaped. Don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, as food is scarce for them over the winter. Protect plants - January is known for cold frosts and bitter winds so plants will need protecting. If you haven’t already done so, ensure protective fleeces are in place on tender plants over-wintering outdoors. Lift containers up onto pot feet – if water isn’t draining away the soil can become water logged. Wet compost can rot roots and cause pots to crack in frost. Remove snow from tree and shrub branches by knocking with a broom. Even a small amount of snow can add a lot of weight to branches, causing them to snap. Dig over bare ground - Run a fork through your vegetable patch or flower beds. This will help to aerate – getting air into the soil is important because plant roots need oxygen. Choose a dry day when the soil isn’t too wet. Don’t break your back breaking down large lumps of soil. Keeping them large can help air circulate and any later frosts will break them up. Feed the birds - Natural food sources for birds are in short supply during the winter. Give them a helping hand by putting food out for them. Keep the food topped up but not full all the time – little and often is best.

Plant of the Month Helleborus Why should you plant them? Popular because they flower in cold winter and early spring, Hellebores herald the start of the New Year bringing a touch of colour to the garden. Commonly know as ‘Christmas Roses’ they are easy to grow and very hardy. They produce attractive flowers and their leaves create a perfect evergreen backdrop to spring flowering bulbs. How should you plant them? Plant in shady herbaceous borders and the areas between deciduous shrubs to give an early splash of colour. Happy in dappled shade they should be planted in rich, heavy soil that won’t dry out in the summer. ideal planting companies include Snowdrops, Primrose, Cornus and Mahonia.

Brislington guide runner completes Malaysia marathon for sight loss chariA keen runner from Bristol has guided his visually-impaired friend in a race across the third longest bridge in the world, helping to raise vital funds for a leading sight loss charity. Chris Derrick, who lives in Brislington, made the 6,500-mile journey to Malaysia to take part in the Penang Bridge International Marathon. The 38-year-old acted as a guide runner to his friend Helen Davis, who recently moved to the country from Bristol. They were joined in the race by friend Kinga Zawisza, and together the trio have raised more than £1,400 for the Macular Society.

Susie McCallum, Macular Society community and events fundraising manager, said: “This was an incredibly tough challenge Chris, Helen and Kinga were undertaking. The fact that this race has to be run overnight gives you an idea of how tricky the heat and humidity are, but all three of them did incredibly well. The money they’ve raised will make a huge difference to people with macular disease and we can’t thank them enough for choosing to fundraise for us.

They decided to support the charity after Chris’s mother, Myra, was recently treated for a macular hole – a rare condition which can cause a significant loss of sight. Despite being experienced runners, it was the first time Chris and Helen had completed a full marathon distance together. The pair have taken part in many races together after meeting at Visually Impaired (VI) Runners Bristol 18 months ago. Chris, who works as a mechanical engineer for Rolls Royce in Filton, said: “I really became a guide runner by accident. I’d done four or five marathons, but I wanted to do something a bit different. I discovered VI Runners Bristol, and a whole world of running and disability sports that was completely new to me. At that time, I didn’t know anything about sight loss or anyone who was visually impaired. “While my mother has been treated for a macular hole recently, she’s been attending her local Macular Society support group where she lives in Cheddar. It’s really helped her, so I wanted to do something to say thank you.” The Penang Bridge International Marathon is the longest bridge marathon in the world. First held in 1985, the event has been run over its current course since 2014 and attracts competitors from all over the world. The race starts at 1am local time due to the country’s heat and humidity and has become famous for its spectacular views. Chris said: “As she lives here permanently now, Helen had warned us how difficult the conditions can be for running, but I really didn’t expect it to be as challenging as it was. The temperature was in the high 20s, but humidity of 83 per cent made it feel much hotter. If it had been a half marathon, it would have been quite comfortable. You’d have a drink, but seconds later, your mouth would be dry again. It was like running in a pressure cooker – it felt like we were cooking on the inside. “We’d been hoping to complete the race in around four hours. Helen and I managed to do it in four hours and 20 minutes and Kinga crossed the line a few minutes after us. Considering how tough it was, we were all happy with that. Helen finished 39th out of 580 women taking part in the race – I was supposed to be guiding her, but she was leading me some of the time as I was finding it so difficult.”

“People all over the UK regularly take on a wide range of challenges to support the Macular Society. The money that they raise for us is absolutely vital and we’re so grateful for their help. It enables us to provide support to people with macular disease and continue to undertake medical research into the condition, so that it can be beaten in the future.” Chris says: “I can’t lie – it was really agonizing. When we reached the finish, I said ‘never again’, but now I’ve had time to think about it, I’d definitely consider doing the race in future, although I’d need to find a way of acclimatising to the heat better. “We’re really grateful to everyone who supported us. Kinga especially did a great job in rounding up lots of friends, work colleagues and family to donate, and I managed to secure us some funding from Rolls Royce as well. I’d originally been thinking of raising about £500, but we exceeded that in a couple of days, so we revised our target to £1,200. We managed to beat that too, and our current total stands at just over £1,400. “I’m also a member of Bristol Rotary Club and I’ve been invited to do a talk there in January about the race, so hopefully we’ll have around £1,500 to hand over to the Macular Society altogether.” If you would still like to sponsor Chris, Helen and Kinga, please visit their JustGiving page: www.justgiving. com/fundraising/helrisrunning For more information on taking part in fundraising events for the Macular Society, please contact Kathy King on 01264 321 964, email kathy.k@ macularsociety.org, or visit www.macularsociety. org/fundraising For more information on macular disease, call the Macular Society on 0300 3030 111 or email help@ macularsociety.org 23

Equity Release Myth Busters Here is our guide to bust some of those myths about releasing equity and provide you with some facts:

With a lifetime mortgage, the most popular method of releasing equity from your home, you will not have to sell any part of it to anyone. The lender will release the funds once a charge is secured on your home, the same as a normal residential mortgage you may have had previously, and you are entitled to carry on living in your home for the rest of your life.

“I cannot leave an inheritance for my family” False

“I will leave a debt for my loved ones if I go ahead with equity release” - False

Equity release will reduce the value of your estate it will not prevent you from leaving an inheritance for your loved ones. You can even opt for a guaranteed percentage your home value to be left to your beneficiaries.

This is not the case. Equity release plans now come with a “no negative equity guarantee”. This means you or your estate will never be asked to repay more than the value of your property, even if the amount owed is greater. We will not recommend a plan to you that does not offer such protection.

“If I release equity from my home now I will not be able to move in future” - False Equity release lenders will allow you to move your loan from one property to another. However, it should be noted that there are certain instances when it may not be possible to transfer your loan from one home to the next. The lenders have strict property criteria so you will need to check with your lender to make sure your new home can act as acceptable security. “I will have to hand over my deeds and will not own my own home any-more” - False

“Equity release is not for everyone” - True Equity release may well not be the right option for you at this time, we understand that everyone is different. Our job is to make sure you know everything you need to, before making any decisions. Rest assured, if we do not think it is the right choice for you, we will say so. You can therefore make informed decisions.

A Lifetime Mortgage could help you in retirement We’ll provide the canvas... ...Paint the future you deserve Contact us for qualifed and impartial advice

Call us on 0800 2545169 or find us at www.laterlife-lending.co.uk This is a lifetime mortgage. To understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration. Our typical advice fee would be £600. A lifetime mortgage may impact your entitlement to means tested benefits and the inheritance you may leave.
