Student Slimmer

From childhood Kayleigh had always struggled with her weight, but it was whilst at university her weight really began to impact her life . Missing home and turning to food for comfort, Kayleigh tipped the scales at over 17 stone. Desperately unhappy and lacking in confidence, she hid herself behind oversized clothing, choosing to stay in rather than joining friends on nights out and not enjoying student life to the max . Plucking up all her courage, Kayleigh joined slimming world on 29th January, and hasn’t looked back. In just 30 weeks she has lost over 4 stone. Kayleigh says “Before joining a group I felt I lost a big part of myself, I knew I needed to do something but that I wouldn’t stick to a diet by myself, I knew I needed help from others. A family member told me about the referral scheme in which (due to having an unhealthy BMI) I was entitled to 12 weeks free at Slimming World. Being a student this was really appealing, and I knew it would be worth a shot.” She goes on to say “Walking into my local Slimming World group I was so nervous, but instantly I was welcomed by friendly faces and reassured by my consultant. It was so inspirational listening to everyone’s stories and it left me feeling even more motivated. I wanted to be one of those people telling new members how Slimming World had changed my life.” .

“Being on a tight budget I soon found ways to save money and stick to plan. I often made big batches of my favourite meals, including diet coke chicken and cottage pie, so I could use them for nights I was in Uni until late or for lunches, leaving me syns to enjoy treats such as chocolate - my mindset around exercise changed too, I’ve been going to the gym for years, but often felt like it was a chore, and I wasn’t feeling the benefits, since joining Slimming World I have found a new love for exercise and am now a platinum body magic member ‘ Kayleigh says ‘ My Slimming World journey has changed my life, I am confident, happy and a lot healthier. From the moment I joined I wanted to be that person that inspired others, so when the opportunity to become a consultant came up it seemed the next natural step, I want to help other's transform their life’s and their relationship with food like I have ‘ Kayleigh will be taking over the groups at St Peters Church, Bishopsworth on a Monday at 5.30 and 7.30pm

Your Garden In November The garden begins to wind down in November as deciduous plants enter dormancy. Leaves are falling rapidly and wind and rain are on the increase. Whilst most of nature is hibernating in the colder months, winter is the ideal time to get new trees into the ground. Trees are best planted in the late autumn when the soil is still warm but not too dry, giving roots time to acclimatise before the harsher temperatures of winter arrive. Whatever your plan to do outside in November, take time to enjoy the garden as it fades, leaving structural plants and evergreens to take centre stage.

der plants

Protect ten

The weather is turning so its time to get those plants protected – frost can do serious damage to tender plants. Frost tender plants in pots should be moved to the greenhouse, conservatory or porch. Exotic plants such as palms or tree ferns should be wrapped up for the winter with frost protection material. d tubers re corms an Lift and sto Lift and store plants such as dahlias and tuberous bedding begonias that have been hit by bad weather. Store in a dry, frost-free dark place ideally in a layer of sawdust. Check occasionally over winter to ensure they are dry and rot free. Remove any that look suspicious to prevent the risk of further infection.

Tie in all plants and secure structures an important winter job is to stake tall plants, climbers and young trees to protect against strong winds. Check that existing ties are not cutting into stems of plants that have grown over the summer. Structures such as arches, pergolas and fences should also be checked and ideally treated with preservative. If repaired now there is less potential damage in high winds. Enjoy your garden!

Why should you plant them? Trees add structure to gardens and landscapes. As well as being used as a focal point for the garden they also make good hedges and screens. They come in a huge number of varieties, shapes and sizes and there is one to suit every taste and position. Whilst most trees are grown for their foliage or flower, some are praised for their bark and branch shapes. Some trees look fantastic in spring while full of flower and others burst into vibrant colour in the autumn. em? you plant th How should Young trees should be staked diagonally. This protects them from strong winds and ensures the roots do not get damaged. Most varieties of tree will have specific planting instructions. There is a tree that will thrive in all soil types from wet soil to poor dry land and everything in between.

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) provide the Critical Care and air ambulance service for 2.1 million people across Bristol, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire, North Somerset and surrounding areas. Our crew attend the most critical incidents across the region by helicopter or by one of our two Critical Care cars. When someone is seriously ill or injured time is of the essence, and they need expert help fast. From emergency blood transfusions to roadside amputations or treating cardiac arrests, our crew specialise in Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine and Trauma Medicine, bringing the skills and expertise of an Emergency Department to the patient. Our crew only attend the most serious cases, where lives are at risk. Incidents that we attend include cardiac arrests, falls from heights, road traffic collisions where the patient is trapped or seriously injured, trauma cases and serious medical issues. We have carried out 1,414 jobs so far in 2018.

On board both the helicopter and cars, we carry response bags weighing 15kg. The paramedics and doctors have to carry this from the aircraft to the incident. The bag includes a variety of pain relief, wound dressings and oxygen. The crew also carry a Lucas machine, a device that standardises heart compressions and monitors. Since 2015 O Negative blood has been part of the kit, allowing the team to perform life-saving blood transfusions at the scene of an incident. When it comes to transferring the patient to onward care, the crew carry out assessments at the scene in order to decide which hospital is best equipped for the patient’s needs, rather than which is the closest.

The Critical Care team consists of a highly trained and experienced Pilot, a Specialist Paramedic in Critical Care (SPCC) and a Critical Care Doctor. All our paramedics are fully qualified with experience working on a land ambulance. To become a SPCC, specialist training must be undertaken, acquiring skills that are not commonly used in routine pre-hospital care. Our doctors are all consultants in emergency medicine.

18

GWAAC needs to raise over ÂŁ3 million each year to stay operational, but receive no day to day funding from the Government or National Lottery. We rely on the generosity of our donors and supporters to keep flying. Find out more about the life-saving work of Great Western Air Ambulance Charity at www.gwaac.com

Stunning antique bedroom furniture in Avonmouth

Established in1984 in Bedminster the Bed Workshop has moved from the Pickle factory. Access issues and falling for the then derelict Grade II Old Bus Depot, Avonmouth, finally forced us to restore it and relocate earlier this year. The old ticket office entrance now provides the first showroom and leads to ground floor workshops and three first floor showrooms. We have produced a varying range of contemporary beds in sustainably sourced pine and oak for over 30 years. Beds are easily modified or designed by customers and can be stained, painted, distressed, lacquered, oiled or waxed. Styles are essentially simple and timeless. With a large range of mattresses to super king in stock, beds can be made, delivered and assembled in 1-2 weeks. With two of our staff in Brittany, we offer a fantastic range of functional antique French furniture. Prices are often comparable with new high street offerings.

20

Large beds are our speciality with many dozens of king-size, super king-size and larger models. Currently our earliest is an incredible 17thC Catalan Marriage bed from Givenchy's Chateau but most date from the late 19thC. Fin de Siecle Paris produced many incredible unique beds, often specifically ordered by sumptuous Maison Clos (don't ask!). From crofts through to Chateau, beds can be in natural wood, painted, gilded or upholstered with a style for everyone. Farmhouse tables have always been sought after with zinc topped and industrial/dressmakers models gaining popularity. Regional armoires are the flagships of French furniture from tiny maids wardrobes to highly carved or painted and gilded masterpieces. Empire, Louis XV or XVI chest of drawers look stunning below a period mirror. Regional pottery and vintage posters helps complete the display. With friendly, knowledgeable staff, easy access from junction 18 of the M5 or A4 Portway, parking and a rail station the Bus Depot is well worth a visit.

PROTECT - PERFECT - PERSONALISE Autotrilogy Is the South West’s leading paint protection film specialist and Bristol’s only certified XPEL installers. Their goal is simple - To offer customers the ultimate in paint protection, vehicle wrapping and to strive for perfection. All their kits are designed and templated using their in-house software which negates the need to cut later on the car, guaranteeing a perfect fit and enabling maximum paint protection. Every vehicle is treated as if it was their own and with the upmost of respect. They want their customers to have a memorable experience when using AutoTrilogy, to leave satisfied and have confidence that the quality of their work is second to none.

RECENT WORK Recently Autotrilogy was very honoured to be commissioned with a job very close to their hearts -Trojan Fitness’s very own Julie Hardiman's Mk 1 Audi TT. Her poor little motor was starting to show its age. So with Julie's permission Damien Fricker owner of Autotrilogy, who also trains at Trojan, very kindly offered to whisk her car away to get Pretty Smart Body Repairs to do all the body work before handing over the Audi to Autotrilogy to work their magic with a bespoke wrap to the car.

WHAT IS XPEL? XPEL is the market leader in paint protection film and has been developing and manufacturing for over 20 years. Councillors Surgery

Councillor’s Report from Harriet Bradley and Mike Langley, Brislington Councillors

Bristol Buses! Two words to set the average Bristolian sighing or groaning. The bus system in Bristol is notorious for cancellations, delays or alteration of routes without warning. The Autumn period, like this September, is particularly frustrating, as increasing numbers of school students and, especially, university students take up seats at peak periods, so buses may sail by stops without pausing.

To be fair to First Bus, Bristol is not an easy city to service. Hilly, with narrow streets, it lacks the rapid routeways through the city that characterise places like Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle. Moreover population increase and inner city developments providing new housing and jobs add to the volume of traffic. Our population is increasing at both ends of the age scale- more elderly people with chronic conditions which limit mobility, more children who need taking across the city to school. The University of Bristol has had major increases for the last two years in its student intake. All adding to the mix of congestion and chaos. As councillors, a high proportion of complaints that come to us concern transport issues: insufficient parking spaces, vehicles obstructing highways and pavements, speeding vehicles, traffic congestion, train cancellations, irregular and infrequent bus services. Bristol City Council has an admirable policy of discouraging car use and promoting walk ing and cycling; but not all journeys can be taken in this way, especially by the elderly, disabled people, mums with young children, tradesmen and deliverers with equipment and heavy loads. Controlling car use depends on having decent and reliable public transport and as of now that is lacking. We seem stuck in a vicious circle: infrequent and unreliable buses force people to use cars; cars create congestion and pollution; more people have respiratory problems limiting their mobility; they take to their cars; congestion builds up; buses get struck in traffic jams and are late or miss out parts of their route. And so it goes on.

30

So what could be the solution? Could Mayor Rees’ bold vision of an underground system be feasible? In the shorter term would more park and rides and rapid transit systems like the Metrobus encourage people out of their cars? Congestion charges and charges for parking at workplaces are currently being considered. What are your views? We would strongly encourage you to respond to the current consultation on transport which you can find on the Council website: https:// bristol.citizenspace.com/growth-regeneration/bristol-transport-strategy/ Or contact us at cllr.harriet.bradley@bristol.gov. uk and cllr.mike.langley@bristol.gov.uk with your thoughts.

Councillors Surgery Article by Jos Clark Liberal Democrats

So the Council has issued a new strategy for the Library service in the City and guess what it mentions neither money nor the vision it has for the service going forward. It talks about community ownership and the buildings themselves without giving a clear idea of where they see the service in the future. This has led many of us to be concerned again about our local libraries again being under threat, especially as the cabinet member responsible for the service has suggested turning them into housing instead. So without money or buildings how is the service to survive in the future? Maybe a virtual library is what the Cabinet have in mind? Whose knows? They certainly do not seem committed to the Library service going forward. On the homelessness front the Council have just agreed to turn their old Housing Head Quarters, St Anne’s House in the St Anne’s area close to the former St Anne’s board mill site into a temporary hostel for homeless people (Bristol has the sixth highest level of homelessness in the UK). The irony of using the old housing office as a home for those in housing need has not been lost of some of us. Anyhow, the hostel will open soon and be run by the St Mungo’s charity.

32

I note that the former Mayor George Ferguson has joined the many voices now calling for the elected Mayor post to be abolished. Of course many of us did not want the post in the first place and certainly his tenure as Mayor where he said a lot but achieved little did nothing to assuage us this opinion. What exactly was George Ferguson Mayoral legacy? We can all see from the behaviour of Donald Trump that it is never a good idea to give one man too much executive power. The current Mayor Marvin Rees started out exactly the same way as George Ferguson, I am here for the people and the buck stops with me. To in a very short timescale taking Umbridge at anyone who does not agree with them. Those Labour Councillor’s who disagree with the current Mayor are being deselected and replaced with ‘yes’ people, undermining our local democracy and accountability. I am pleased that after nearly 40 years of dereliction we are close to seeing the old John Peer Factory on Bath Road, Brislington (opposite the Arnos Court Hotel) being redeveloped. Many of those who use this major thoroughfare through our part of Bristol will not have failed to notice the disused John Peer furniture factory which in recent years was used as a warehouse for a well known local independent superstore. Well thanks to a campaign started by me and housing called Sovereign bought the site and its plans have now been submitted to the Council. I cannot wait to see this local eyesore redeveloped. After all we do need more housing in the City and this is brownfield site so we are building over green field sites.

Chicken, Chorizo and Prawn Paella Ingredients * 1 tsbp olive oil * 2 onions, finely chopped

Season the chicken thighs with salt and freshly ground black pepper and fry, turning regularly until lightly coloured. Add the chorizo and tomato puree and cook for a further minute or two, so the tomato begins to darken.

* 6 chicken thighs, boned, skinned, cut in half

2. Add the garlic and cook for a further couple of * 150g cooking chorizo, skinned and cut into 5mm / minutes, then push everything to one side. Add the ¼ inch. Slices tomatoes and lemon wedges, and fry for a few minutes. Mix everything with paprika. Pour in the * 4 garlic cloves, crushed wine and all but a large ladleful of the chicken * 1 tbsl tomato puree stock and return to the boil. Add the bay leaves and thyme, and season with salt. * 1 tsp sweet smoked paprika * 12 baby plum tomatoes, halved * 1 lemon, cut into 8 wedges * 1 glass of white wine * 1.5 litres / 2 ½ pints of hot chicken stock * 3 bay leaves * 2 sprigs thyme * 500g/ 1 lb 2oz paella rice * 1 tsp saffron threads, soaked in a little warm water * A couple of handfuls of live mussels, cleaned, de-bearded and rinsed

The method 1. Heat the oil in a 36cm paella pan or a very large frying pan set over a medium heat. Add onions and begin to sweat.

36

3. When the chicken stock has returned to the boil, turn down to a simmer and sprinkle in the rice, trying to get it as even as possible. Pour in the saffron and stir – this is the only time you should stir your paella once the rice has been added! If you’re unsure of burning or sticking, give it all a little nudge around. Bring to the boil again, then simmer for 5 minutes. 4. Turn the heat down and leave the rice to simmer slowly – this should take between 12 – 15 minutes. If it is getting dry, taste – if still a little too firm (crunchy) add a little more stock. When you are satisfied the rice is cooked, arrange the prawns all over the paella. Cover with a damp teacloth or a lid if you have one, and wait for the mussels to steam open and the prawns to turn pink. Serve with some parsley sprinkled.
