Well its August and we are over half way through the year already, schools officially out and lots of events on this summer like the Bristol international Balloon Fiesta and things to do in your local community.
One of the topics in some areas are the shear amount of flies about a the moment they seem to have been busy multiplying exponentially especially in the Avonmouth area. Feels like we just have to put up with it as local councils have no interest in the problem. Have you got a remedy if so let us know at Direct Local.

So finally what do we all think of Boris as our new Prime Minister then? Will he do the job and take us in to Brexit or will he just be another Prime minister that offers everything and gives us nothing but beating around the bush. personally i think we will never leave the EU and another referendum is on the cards but please tell us your thought on this as we love to get your points of view on this subject.

Raving for the community! Huge excitement as Long Ashton Disco Night returns. Earlier this year Long Ashton Community Centre was home to a bangin’ disco where two of LA’s legendary DJs played a perfect mix of disco and dance to raise money for the centre. DJs Ben and Pete were stoked to bring their top sets to Long Ashton and the Community Centre was transformed into the ultimate disco dance hall with a massive cache of lights, glittering mirror ball, punchinella and a licensed bar. The dance floor was buzzing from start to finish. “Like medicine! Pure joy!” declared an excited dancer as people whooped and jumped around. Long Ashton resident Steven Dodds exclaimed "Absolutely brilliant. Triumph!", while Amanda Halford said "A Friday night shindig was just what the village needed. Who knew there were so many fabulous movers among us?!" Organiser Ruth McAllister said “Loads of people asked for another disco because it was such a brilliant night. The next disco will be stonking too!”
With all profits from the disco nights being donated to the centre, DJ Ben says “people are raving for the community”. Sarah Leong, manager of the Community Centre said, “We are really glad the event was a great success. The donation of £150 will go towards our Outdoor Gym on Peel Park fund.” The disco on Friday 13 September promises to be even mightier than the last, so get there early before capacity is reached. Eight til late. £7 entry. Over 18s only. Licensed bar.
Go to Long Ashton Disco Nights Facebook page for your chance to win Prosecco and free entry. Watch the famous video trailer. Share with your friends and rave away! Bristol’s Quality Advertising Magazines

Volunteers Needed to Help Change Lives for People Living with Sight Loss The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association needs volunteers to help improve the confidence and independence of people with a visual impairment. Some of those hoping for a volunteer have been waiting for several months, so getting involved could really help change someone’s life. My Guide is a service that Guide Dogs offers whereby a trained, sighted guide, is partnered with someone with sight loss. My Guides accompany service users to facilitate tasks such as running errands, practicing everyday routes, using public transport, or going to the gym to build confidence in these areas.
Ross, a volunteer in Bristol says, “It’s a simple yet fulfilling role that makes a positive difference. My match, Shruthi, is able to attend events with my support, such as the International Women’s Day event at Bristol City Hall, which she would have found much harder to do alone. My training with Guide Dogs prior to being matched with Shruthi was invaluable. I’d recommend the role to anyone who is looking for volunteer opportunities.” Guide Dogs provides full training for all volunteers. To apply, go to the Guide Dogs website (https:// www.guidedogs.org.uk/) and click on Volunteering or call the South West Team on 0345 143 0204.
Maeve Kearney, My Guide Volunteer Manager, says “My Guide is a fantastic service that enables volunteers to help people who are partially sighted or blind to take part in activities that they may not have been able to take part in previously. Many people living with sight loss experience isolation or loneliness, and I have seen first-hand how having a My Guide volunteer can help turn their life around”

Zesty Butterflied Chicken Serves 4 Ready in 40 minutes, plus chilling Ingredients Pared peel of 1 small unwaxed lemon, plus grated zest of ½ unwaxed lemon to serve 1 tsp sea salt ½ tsp dried chilli flakes, plus extra to serve 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary, plus extra to serve 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts Low-calorie cooking spray Salad or veg, to serve For the potato salad 500g Jersey Royals (or use new or baby potatoes) 3 tbsp warm vegetable stock 2 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise 4 tbsp fat-free natural Greek yogurt 2 tbsp roughly chopped fresh parsley2 tbsp roughly chopped fresh mint 6 spring onions, sliced Method Preheat the oven to 140°C/Fan 120°C/Gas 1. Put the lemon peel strips on a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes until pale-golden and dry. Using a pestle and mortar or a rolling pin, grind the baked lemon peel and salt together.
12
Stir in the chilli, garlic, rosemary and a little freshly ground black pepper and mix well. Now ‘butterfly’ the chicken breasts. Hold 1 chicken breast on a chopping board and slice through the middle horizontally until almost cut in half – take care not to go all the way! Open out flat like a butterfly. Repeat with the other breasts and rub the lemon mixture all over the cut sides. Lay flat on 2 plates, cover and chill for at least 1 hour. Meanwhile, make the potato salad. Cook the potatoes in a saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain and halve, put them in a bowl and pour over the stock. Toss well and leave to cool – the potatoes will soak up some of the stock while they’re still warm. Mix the mayonnaise and yogurt in a bowl, stir in the herbs and spring onions and season to taste. Add to the potatoes and fold everything together. Light the barbecue for direct medium heat. Spray the chicken with low-calorie cooking spray and barbecue over direct medium heat for 8-10 minutes or until tender and cooked through, turning once. Or cook on a griddle pan over a medium-high heat. Scatter over the extra lemon zest, chilli and rosemary and serve hot with the creamy potato salad and lots of salad or veg.

Your Garden In August
After the heat of July, the weather usually continues to be very nice giving us time to simply enjoy our gardens and all the hard work we’ve put into them. Don’t worry too much about doing endless jobs – just remember to keep everything watered. If you are going away, you may need to enlist the help of friends and family to look after the garden. If you are at home and feeling energetic, there are still a few gardening tasks for August that will keep your gardens going longer, as well as opportunities to get a head start on next year’s garden plans.
Take herb cutting
August is the ideal month to take cuttings woody herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender. To do this, simply take new growth that hasn’t flowered this year cut a piece 10cm long just below a leaf joint, remove the lower leaves and dip the end in a rooting hormone before planting in a gritty compost. If you have lavender in the garden, now is also the ideal time to give it a trim. This will encourage new bushy growth in the spring and will prevent it becoming bare and woody.
Pruning and tidying
Most long flowering perennials will finish flowering this month so cut them down to the ground. Don’t forget about them though – continue to water them, as this will encourage a second flush of foliage and generally prevent the garden looking frazzled and messy. Although weeds will be growing more slowly now than in the spring it’s a good idea to continue to hoe the soil to keep them down.
14
Try to do this in warm, dry conditions to ensure weed seedlings you disturb are left on the surface to dehydrate and die.
Make plans for next year

LORD MAYOR VISITS BRISTOL NURSERY CHILDREN
“When we started speaking about cycling and healthy living the children spoke about their bikes at home and how much they like them.
Children at a Brislington nursery received a very special visit recently from The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Jos Clark.
“It was a lovely morning and we’d like to thank the Lord Mayor for being so gracious in answering all of the children’s many questions!”
During the visit to the Mama Bear’s Day Nursery & Pre-School in Allison Road the Lord Mayor talked to the children about healthy living and encouraged them to cycle around Bristol. The Lord Mayor was given a tour of the nursery and children presented her with some flowers. She was also able to meet Mama Bear herself! The children then grilled their visitor on everything from what her number plate means to what her favourite food is. Mama Bear’s Allison Road Nursery Manager Emma Cumming said: “We all enjoyed a lovely visit with The Lord Mayor, the children absolutely loved having a VIP come to visit and were all thoroughly excited to find out more about her and her job. “The children found out what the Lord Mayor does, why she has a flag on her car, where she lives and all about the feathers on the Lord Mayor’s hat, which they said looked like a pirate hat! We also learnt how the Lord Mayor makes Bristol a great place to live.

Caught by the pension tax trap?
Avoiding the charge
Those looking to cash in part, or all, of their personal pension need to check they don’t pay too much tax.
The emergency tax code is still applied, but this triggers HMRC to adjust your tax code and send an updated version to your pension provider. Once the new code has been issued, any further, larger withdrawals are taxed correctly.
Pension freedom rules allow anyone aged 55 or over to access their personal pension funds, there are complex rules on how withdrawals are taxed. Problems can occur if you take a one-off lump sum – an ‘uncrystallised fund pension lump sum withdrawal’ (UFPLS) – perhaps to reinvest or to pay off debts. This differs from using a personal pension to provide a regular income, through a drawdown plan or annuity. Your pension provider will apply an emergency tax code, which assumes you are withdrawing the UFPLS on a monthly basis, unless it has an up-to date tax code for you. For example, if you take a UFPLS of £10,000 at the start of the tax year, HMRC may assume you will take an income of £120,000 across the year from your pension and tax you accordingly. If it is a one-off withdrawal, you are likely to pay too much tax.
As emergency tax codes are generally only applied the first-time people access their pension funds, one option is to make your first withdrawal a nominal amount, say £100.
You may be able to claim a rebate, either through your tax return at the end of the tax year, or HMRC if you need the rebate more quickly. If you are planning to withdraw a lump sum from your pension contact Bristol & West financial services. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate tax advice. Levels and bases of taxation and tax reliefs are subject to change and their value depends on individual circumstances. Tax laws can change.

Councillors Surgery Many local people have been asking me what’s happening with the Bristol Arena and its former site at temple meads. Well as far as the actual arena is concerned as you know the Mayor Marvin Rees decided to cancel the temple meads project and move the Bristol arena to well, outside Bristol at the old Filton aerodrome site. That decision was taken last September and to date we have had heard no more from Marvin or Labour about their plans for the Filton Arena. On the other hand, the former arena site at temple meads is subject to a very interesting joint development proposal between the Council and a developer called L&G. The plan is to build a conference centre, 345 room hotel, 550 homes which just under half will be affordable and two large office blocks. The whole development will be designed by internationally renowned Zaha Hadid associates. But the most interesting aspect of this development from a taxpayer’s point of view is the way the scheme will be built and funded. The usual way that Councils built new developments is to create a project brief and get developers to bid for it, once the successful bid is secured then they purchase the site and build the scheme as per the brief. In the case of the temple island scheme, Labour are proposing to enter into a joint partnership with L&G to build the site on a different and very unusual basis. Firstly, the Council are being asked to stump up £500k towards developing the proposal, yes folks even more money into the blackhole that is the arena project. Then L&G are insisting that one of the office blocks is built first and that Bristol City Council must fill it to 80% of its capacity before the developers will move to the next stage and build the rest.
24
They argue that they need the revenue from these office tenants to pay their fund members. There is no indication of how Bristol City Council will arrange the letting of this office block nor what happens if they fail to reach the 80% or timescales for how long that process might take. Also as this development is not being funded through a more usual funding mechanism then scrutiny of the deal is limited, what a surprise this Labour cabinet excluding the Council and the wider public from its decision making processes. Bearing in mind the current financial mess of Bristol Energy then one has to be very cautious about Labour’s ability to deliver this scheme. Obviously, something has to happen with this site and the idea of having a conference centre for example is a good one and much needed. I also think the Council was stung over a previous scheme that had a distinct lack of affordable housing and this funding model may allow them to provide more affordable homes as per the scheme with L&G proposes. But the devil is in the detail and with something that has important financial ramifications for the City, then it would I think it would be wise to involve as many Councillors as possible in the decision-making process. But, I live more in hope than expectation that this will happen with the current Mayor.

Beetroot, sweet potato and pea samosa rolls Ingredients For the spring rolls: 1 red onion, finely diced 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 small thumb of ginger, peeled and grated 1 tsp garam masala 1 beetroot, peeled and diced 1 medium sweet potato, peeled and diced 1 medium white potato, peeled and diced 3 tbsps. Peas Salt to season Rectangular sheets filo pastry 1 tsp nigella seeds Melted butter for brushing
Method 1.Preheat the oven to 220C/ fan 200C 2.Roast the beetroot and sweet potato in the middle of the oven for 15-20 minutes depending on the size of the chunks. 3. Put the white potato in a saucepan of cold water and bring to the boil. Drain once tender. 4. Fry the onions on a medium heat until softened and started to colour, then add the garam masala, garlic and ginger. Fry for around one minute. Leave to cool along with the sweet potato and beetroot then lightly mash together. 5. Brush half a sheet of filo with a little butter and fold the length in half. Brush with the butter, place a spoonful of the filling at the edge closest to you, shape into a log. Leave a 1.5-2 cm gap at the edge closest to you and at the sides. Roll away from you, folding the edges inwards to enclose the filling. Keep the remaining pastry covered to prevent drying out. 6. Brush with the butter, sprinkle with the seeds and repeat with the remaining filling and pastry. 7. Bake on a baking sheet, seam-side down, for 15-18 mins until golden and crisp.

back &your relaxathis So Sit whether August as we have all web-slinger or king the jungle action, comedy, of the July and hasromance some fantastic Tarantino you need. Furious Hobbs & Shaw movies lined up! Spider Fast man & Far from Home With the summer sun continuing to swelter, running to your nearest air-conditioned Cineworld is a logical way to spend your time. Luckily, there’s plenty of silver screen hits set to debut in August – so let’s get into it! Kicking us off on August 1st is Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham in the first ever Fast & Furious spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. Going up against Idris Elba’s big bad super-soldier, the two will need to put aside their differences to take down this seemingly unstoppable common enemy.
The Angry Birds Movie 2
A day later sees more familiar faces return via The The Lion Angry Birds Movie 2, with Red, Chuck and Bomb back for another adventure where they are forced to go head-to-head with a rival island of Eagles.
King
Fast forward to August 9th and there’s a great double bill as both The Art of Racing in the Rain and The Sun is also a Star take to the cinema. The former tells the story of a race car driver and his dog, while the latter centres on two hopeless romantics that fall swiftly in love. Then, on August 14th, Quentin Tarantino’s show biz satire Once upon a time in Hollywood arrives in cinemas, boasting an all-star cast that includes the likes of Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt. A TV actor and his stunt double want to achieve mainstream success, but 1969 LA has other plans. Two days later, Good Boys is a new type of coming-of-age comedy that proves skipping school isn’t always the correct choice.
The Sun is also a Star

Councillors Corner
Tim Rippington, Pr0spective Labour Councillor for Brislington East Some great work took place in Brislington over the winter, and very few people are aware of it. Bristol City Council, working in conjunction with St Mungos, the homeless charity, opened a 24-hour shelter in the old council office block St Anne’s House. The shelter provided a safe and warm space where people who would otherwise be sleeping rough were able to access the support they needed whilst waiting for space in longer term accommodation. Rough sleeping has increased massively under this Conservative Government, so this shelter has been sorely needed. St Anne’s had a capacity of 30 beds and accommodated a total of 59 people between November 2018 and the end of March 2019 when it closed. Of the 59 people accommodated, 45 moved on to longer term accommodation, which represents 76% positive housing outcomes. A second year of funding has been secured from the Government for 2019/20, and the shelter will re-open in October.
When the shelter was opened in November 2018 there were serious problems to overcome before the building to could be opened to the community, including a non-functioning lift and electrical and asbestos issues. We asked the Mayor to ensure that these issues were resolved and we’re pleased to report that there is now a fully-functioning lift under maintenance contract, and the various meeting room and other spaces are safe to use for a variety of purposes. To hire out the space, please contact the St Mongos manager Richard Chilvers by e-mail at Richard.Chilvers@Mungos.org – we now need to support this service! I mentioned the Library earlier, and there are also developments here, with a new Friends Group on the way. The aim is to open up the Library to further community use and to broaden the number of groups using the facilities. Libraries in the 21st century can be so much more than just book depositories, and the Brislington one is already home to a variety of groups such as Bounce and Rhyme and Crafty Ladies, but by running a Friends group we will be able to access the building during closing hours to allow other groups to use the space.
The shelter itself occupies the ground floor of St Anne’s house, but another interesting development is taking place upstairs, where the space has been opened up for Community use. This is something that we in the Brislington Labour If you are interested in joining the Friends group, Party have been pushing for for some time, as please e-mail timrippington@aol.com. Watch this Community space in the wards is virtually non-exspace! istent - the only other council-owned building open to the public being the Library on Wick Road. Your Business has Confidential Paper Waste
In essence – any piece of paper if it contains even incomplete confidential information which can be linked back to an individual or company in a private or professional capacity.
Confidential waste applies to every business – not just banks, accountants and solicitors. So, what is confidential paper waste? The obvious ones in relation to customers, suppliers and staff are: * Financial information * Medical information * Payroll information & Banking details * Home addresses Less obvious bits of paper are: * Job sheets which contain any customer information * Old drafts of letters which have been scribbled on * Payment slips from credit card terminals * Customer enquiry forms / Lead forms * Contact Management or Accounting software printouts * A notebook containing handwritten notes which may include sensitive information
34
It’s important such paperwork is: 1. While current and in use, kept securely, not viewable by passers’ by and locked away when outside of work 2. Put in a secure locked container whilst waiting collection / destruction 3. Destroyed by a capable and authorised person who can provide you with a certification of collection and destruction. CSRB Ltd (www.csrb.co.uk) are experts in this field and can advise you accordingly on how to protect yourself from new regulations.
VODAFONE TO OFFER UNLIMITED DATA AND BRING 5G TO MORE PLACES THAN ANY OTHER NETWORK
With 5G and Vodafone Unlimited, a user can have gaming on the go, high definition streaming on the sofa, uploading, downloading, vlogging, blogging, virtual reality, augmented reality, connected cars, cows and coffee machines - all with fast connectivity, low lag and no worries about your data limit.
Vodafone launched its 5G network and will become the first company to offer unlimited data on both 5G and 4G with the launch of Vodafone Unlimited on the 10 July 2019. Vodafone will not charge a price premium for access to its 5G network and all unlimited SIMs are 5G ready.
The switch-on was marked with the world’s first demonstration of the power of 5G to transmit touch using haptic technology. Two players from Wasps rugby team were able to run a training session despite being more than 100 miles apart.
The new unlimited data plans also extend to the new Vodafone Together service, which combines mobile and broadband in one bill. Vodafone also becomes the first UK provider to offer customers 5G roaming in four European countries in some of the most popular tourist and business locations over the summer, at no additional cost. Vodafone UK Chief Executive Officer Nick Jeffery said: “5G will transform the way we live and work. Our customers are streaming over 50% more content today than they did last year, and with 5G the demand for data is only set to increase. That is why we want to remove the limits on data, so that customers can unlock the full potential of 5G, and we can really propel the UK into the digital age. By offering unlimited plans to our consumer and business customers, we will revolutionise the market. We will give customers all the data they need, when and where they want it.”
The impact of a rugby tackle made by Will Rowlands at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry was transferred via 5G to teammate Juan de Jongh on stage in London. Juan, in a specially developed haptic Teslasuit, was able to feel the force of the tackle in real- time thanks to Vodafone’s high speed and super low latency 5G. Vodafone recently announced a new sponsorship and technology deal with Wasps rugby and netball teams. Formula 1 Five-Time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, officially opened Vodafone’s new 5G service. As a British sporting icon, tech fan, gaming enthusiast, global roamer and someone synonymous with speed, Lewis was the natural choice to switch on the Vodafone 5G network. He will act as a 5G ambassador for Vodafone, helping to bring to life the potential of 5G to be a real game-changer.
Vodafone is switching on its 5G network and bringing 5G to more places than any other network. 5G live in seven UK cities; 27 cities in total across Europe. 5G roaming in four countries over the summer. Unlimited mobile data plans from £23. No premium for 5G. Unlimited combined mobile and broadband plans with Vodafone Together. World first demonstration of the power of 5G to transmit touch using haptic technology. Formula 1 Five-Time World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, officially opened Vodafone’s new 5G service. 5G smartphones and 5G wireless router available to buy now.
