DearOnes,

overthepasttwoyears,theforeigncorrespondencehasalmostdoubled andthetimewhichIhavetotaketoattendtoithasincreasedcorrespondingly.Overthesameperiodoftime,mycommitmentshereinIndiahave alsogreatlyincreased.

MuchofthetimethatIspendindoingtheforeigncorrespondencecould besavediftherepresentativesandgroupleadersplayedagreaterpartin lookingaftertheareasandindividualSatsangsforwhichtheyareresponsible.Bygivingdueconsiderationtotheirresponsibilitiesandbysettinga goodexample,thecausesthatpromptthedearonestowritenumerousletterstomeonroutinemattersconcerningtherunningofSatsangaffairs wouldbeavoided.Inaddition,themajorityofthebasicquestionsaskedby thosenon-initiateswhoareinterestedintheteachingsoftheMasteraswell asbyinitiatescouldandshouldbedealtwithbythegroupleaders,whocan answerfromtheirownlevelorbyreferringthequestionertooneorthe otherofthebookswrittenbyme.

IhavewrittenbooksonalmostallphasesofSpirituality, whichcontain theanswerstomostofthequestionsthatnon-initiatesorthosealreadyput ontheWaymaycaretoask,butstillletterskeepcominginaskingquestions whichcouldbeansweredbygivingaproperstudytothebooks.

Thetimehascomeforallgroupleadersandrepresentativestoevaluate theirpositionsandbereadytoassumelargerresponsibilitiesthantheyhave hithertocarriedout.TheyshouldhavesufficientknowledgeoftheteachingstobeabletoanswermostquestionsonthePathandalsodealwith questionsaskedoncomparativereligions,withspecialreferencetothe Bible,whencomparedtotheSuratShabdYoga.Ifagroupleaderbelieves thathe/shecannotansweraparticularquestionorsolveaparticularsituation,themattermaybereferredtotherepresentativeforreply.Ifarepre-

Ishouldalsoliketosayafewwordsaboutthenumerouspersonalprob‐lems whichthedearonesrefertomeforasolutiontotheirdifficulties. WhileIamhappytogivetherightguidance,itshouldalsoberemembered thatthoseinitiatedbymearelookedafterbythegraciousMasterPower workingoverhead,WhoiseverwithHischildrenandcansolvealloftheir problemsiftheybutputthemselvesinareceptivemood.Inthisregard,an applicationofsoundcommonsensetogetherwithacalmconsiderationof thefactscanworkwondersindevelopingreceptivitytotheMasterPower. Receptivityisthekeywhichcannotonlysolveyourmaterialdifficulties, butalsounlockthekingdomofheavenwithinyou.

AtthetimeofInitiation,theMasterimpartsHisownlifeimpulse. When werememberHim,HeremembersuswithallHisheartandsoul.Heisnot thebody.HeistheWordmadeflesh.TogetthefullbenefitoftheMaster Power,thedisciplemustdevelopreceptivity.Itisimpossibletodevelopreceptivityuntilimplicitobedienceisgiventothecommandmentsofthe Master.WhenyoupayheedtotheMaster'swords,thenthatisasign thatyouaregrowinginloveforHim,andthemoreyougrowinlovefor Him,themorereceptivityyouwilldevelop.

AtthistimeIshouldalsoliketoclarifycertainmisunderstandingsonInitiation.SomeexperienceoftheLightandSoundisalwaysgiven,whetherlittleorgreat,dependingonthebackgroundofthepersonbeinginitiated.It sometimeshappensthatamanistenseatthistimeandsoreduceshisreceptivitytothegraciousMasterPowerworkingoverhead.Thebestresults areachievedwhenthepersonbeinginitiatedisrelaxedandquitefreshand buoyant.However,toomuchemphasisisplacedontheinitialexperience receivedatthetimeofholyInitiation.ItisthefirstsignthatGod’sgracehas descendedonasoulwhenthatpersonreceivesInitiationfromalivingMaster.SuchlikepeoplewhoareconnectedtotheWordorNaamPowerare mostfortunate.ItisthroughthegraceofGodalonethatoneisinitiated. ThegreatestservicethatadisciplecanrendertotheMasteristobecomea

fitreceptaclesothathecanbeattunedtotheNaamPowertowhichhehas beenconnected.However,thistakestime.ThespiritualPathisadifficult oneandrequiresarigorousself-discipline.Wemustforeverbeonthealert againstanythingthatdrawsusawayfromthePath.Wemustcarryoutthe Master’sinstructionstotheveryletteranddevoteregulartimetomeditation.Wemustlearntoovercomeself-lovewhichisafirethatconsumesand destroysandlearntocultivateloveforGod,whichisafirethatpurgesand purifies.

InitiationalsomeansthatoneisacceptedbytheMaster toentertheCollegeofSpirituality.Itisnotbyanymeansagraduation.Togiveyoua worldlyexample,whenastudentisacceptedbyauniversityforacourseof study,heisgenerallyoverjoyedatthemereacceptance.HedoesnotimmediatelygotothePresidentanddemandhisgraduationcertificate.He knowsthathemustworkhardathisstudiesinordertopasstheintermediateandfinalexaminationsbeforehecanbecalledagraduate.Ifhedoesnot applyhimself,thenheshouldnotbesurprisedifhefailsinhisexaminations.Afterpassinghisfinalexaminationsthestudentisthenrewarded withadegree,whichentitleshimtoundertakepostgraduatestudies.

Ifonehastoputinsomuchhardworktoobtainworldlyknowledgethen howmuchhardershouldheexpecttoworkanddisciplinehimselfinorder tomakehimselfworthytoreceivethatwhichtheMasterwishestobestow onhim.

Untilsuchtimeasthedisciplebeginstodevelopwithinandenjoycontact withtheinnerMaster,hemustofnecessityhavefirmfaithintheouterMaster.TheMasterdoesnotdiscloseallofHisgreatnessatonce,butonlyin proportionasanaspirantshowshiskeennessandmakesprogressonthe Path,justasastudent,whenheadvancesinhisstudies,getstoknowlittle bylittlesomethingoftheabilityofhisteacher.Similarly,theMasterstarts justlikeanordinaryteacherandimpartsinstructionsasanyfriendorwellwisherwoulddo.InduecourseoftimeHedemonstratestheauthorityofa MasterandisfinallyseentobeembeddedinSatorTruthasSatguru.Atthis

stage,HeandGodappeartobemergedinoneanotherandthereisno differencebetweenthem.

Finally,Initiationdoesnotmeanthatlifewillbeabedofroses forthe disciple.Inthetaskofself-purificationphysicalandmentalsufferingplay theirpart.Whoistherethatdoesnotsufferatsometimeinhislife?After Initiationtheprocessoflighteningtheloadholdingthesoulinbondageis started.ThisprocesscanbegonethroughspeedilyandhappilyifthedisciplekeepssweetremembranceoftheMasterinhisheartandendeavoursto remainjollyinhisspirits.AsthediscipleadvancesonthePath,heisgiven spiritualstrengthandouteradversitieslosetheirpinchingeffect.

IwishyouallspeedyprogressontheWay and,sidebysidewithyourown spiritualdevelopment,lettheLightshiningineachoneofyoubeasource ofinspirationtoyourfellowman.

Ihopethatthiscircularletterwillinspireyoualltogreatereffort,sothatby thetimeIcomeamongyou – Godwilling – youwillderivegreaterbenefit fromthephysicalpresenceoftheMaster.

DearOnes, inmycircularletterofJune13,itwasexplainedindetailwhatistheresponsibilityofeachandeveryinitiate,thetruemeaningofInitiationandthelife tobeledbyonewhowishestoprogressonthePath.

Incontinuation,Ishouldliketosayafewwordson Sadachar or theright‐eouslife, withoutwhichonecannotsitinthequietofhisownselfandwith concentratedattention,piercethroughtheinnerdarkness.

Toachievetruespiritualprogressonemustlead‘thegoodlife’, Imayeven saya‘God-likelife’, beforemuchinnerprogresscanbemade.Atthesame timeonemustbefullydutifultoregularmeditations,asbothareessential. Toleadagoodlifewithoutdevotingtimetoone’sspiritualpracticeswillnot raisetheattentiontotheseatofthesoul.Similarly,devotinghourstomeditationwithouteliminatingbadhabitsandcultivatinggoodonesintheir place,willnotgetanywhere.Purityoflifeisessentialforfruitfulmeditations.

Whatis‘thegoodlife’? Itistohavegoodthoughts,goodwordsandgood deeds.Sadacharisalifeofcontinuedtightnessfrombeginningtoend.Itis foreachinitiatetooccasionallypauseandintrospectastohowfarhehas succeededinmoldinghislifeinaccordancewiththecommandmentsofthe Master.WetalkofGod,hearofGod,andreadofGod,butweseldompractiseGodinourdailylife.ItisthepracticeofthepresenceofGodthatmattersandwecanonlyhavetheawarenessofHispresencebyleadinga‘Godlikelife’;therearenoshortcutsonthewaybacktoGod.

Truthishigherthaneverythingbuthigherstillistrueliving. Truthand truelivingarenotexclusiveofeachotherbutgotogether;onesupplements theotherandtheircombinationforms‘theGod-likelife’.Onewhopracticestruelivingwillalwaysearnhislivingbythesweatofhisbrowandfeed himselfandhisfamilyonrightlyprocuredfoodconsistingoffruits,vegeta-

bles,nuts,cerealsandpermitteddiaryproducts.Furthermore,hewillbe honestandaboveboardinhisdealingswithothers.Thesethreeaspectsof conductareindispensableaidstotrueliving.

Oncecangaugehisorherspiritualprogress bythemeasureofconscious controlthatheorshehasovertheirthoughtpattern.Onewhohasinsome measureachievedthiscontrolwillnotbeswayedorupsetbyouterconditions,stressesandstrainsthathisenvironmentmayplacehim.Ifonecannotriseabove,beinfullcontrolofandhandlewitheasethecircumstances ofhisouterenvironment,hewillneverbeabletosucceedinthewayof Spirituality.

Sotheimportantthingis tofirstlearntohandleyourouterenvironment, consistingofyourhomeand/orworklife.Wearetobejudgedbyouractionsandnotbyourwords.Itisfromtheabundanceofourheartthatall actionsresult,whetherphysical,emotionalorintellectual.Themindisan indexandreflectingmirrorandittrulydepictsone’sinnerstate.Ameasure ofsuccessinhowwellyouaresucceedinginhandlingyourouterenvironmentwillbeagradualawarenessthatyouarebecomingthemasterofyour ownthoughts.ItistoachievethissuccessthatIintroducedtheself-introspectivediaries.Howmanyreallykeeptheirdiariesproperly?Veryfew – if any – Iamsorrytosay.Ifthediariesweretobetakenadvantageof,yousee, youwouldseeachangeinyourbehaviour,yourmadeofthinkingandconsequentlyyouwouldprogressspirituallybyleapsandbounds.Thepurpose ofthediaryistoreflectyourowninnerstate,sothatyouknowwhereyou stand.Itisatool,whichifusedproperly,willchiselyouintoarespectable fitforthemanifestationoftheMasterwithinyou.

Youshouldputjustasmuchdevotionandattentionintokeepingyourdiary asyouputintoyourmeditations.Thefollowingpointswillgiveyouthe rightunderstandingonthesublimepurposebehindandbenefitstobehad fromkeepingthediary:

1.When,attheendoftheday,yourecallyourfailuresinthought,word anddeed,inwhichdirectionwillyourmindbeturned?Naturallyit willgototheOnewhohasaskedyoutokeepit.Sokeepingthediary

isalsoremembranceoftheMaster;youaresayingsomethingtoHim. IfyourememberHim,well,Heremembersyou,andintime,youwill developreceptivitytoHimwhereveryoumaybe.Therecanbeno truespiritualprogresswithoutreceptivity,andthedailymaintenance ofthediarywithfullattentionandtrueyearningtobefreedfromthe lapseswhicharerecordedthereingoesalongwaytodevelopingthis receptivity.

2.IntheChristianreligion,Iunderstandthatthosewhowishmaymake aconfessionoftheirlapsesbeforeapriest.Theymaygoonceamonth orweekly,butgenerallynotmoreoftenthanonceaweek.Butbykeepingthediariesyouaremakingaconfessioneveryday.Letyourconfessionsbehonestlyandopenlyrecordedinthevariouscolumns,sothat youknowwhereyoustandandcantakerectifyingaction.Thebest andeasiestwaytocureyourillsistoyearntobefreeofthemand – as mentionedabove – tohavesweetremembranceoftheMasteratthe timeyouarefillinginyourdiary.

3.Lastandjustasimportantastheforegoing,keepingthediaryshould notbeallowedtostagnateintoamererecordingoffailures,which tendstobecomemechanicalifdonewithlittleornoattention.The truepurposeofputtingthesefailuresdowninfrontofyouistomake yourselfawareofthemsothattheymaybeweededout.Toweedthem outitisnotsufficienttocutoffoneortwobranches,youmustuproot thecause.Onceyoubecomeawareofafailure,youshouldbeableto traceittoacertainsituation,andthissituationwillhelpyoutoidentifythecauseoftheweaknessinyouthathastobestrengthened.By andbytheverycauseofthefailurewilldropoffbyitself.

Anotherimportantaspectof‘thegoodlife’concernsouterbehaviour, whichshouldbenaturaltothesocietyintowhichoneisborn;noactingor posingisrequired.Thesearesomedearoneswhobelievethattheyshould adopttheoutersymbolsofdressandnamethatcharacterizethesociety intowhichtheMasterwasborn,inthebeliefthatthisispleasingtoHim.

Thelifeofthespiritdoesnotcallforconversiontooutermodesoflivingin

name,appearanceorapparel.TheMastersdonotcometomakeorunmake socialorders.TheirmissionisjusttofulfillthelawofGod,whichistoredeemHislostchildren.Theysimplyaskustoconvertourselvesinwardly, tobepoorinspiritandpureatheart.Weshouldcultivatetruehumility, whichisneitherservilenotassertive.Thesearethethingsthatwillplease theMasterandmakeusreceptivetothegraciousMasterPowerworking overhead.Ifyoulivealifeofhumilityandsimplicity,youwillhavepeaceof mind.Afterall,whatisthereonearththatbelongstoyou?Whybeattached tothevanitiesoftheworldwhenthetreasuresofdivinityliewithinyou?If youliveforGod,allthingsshallworkoutinyourbestinterests,notonly spirituallybutalsomaterially.ThisisthefundamentallawofGodandcan berealizedbyallwhowillpractisetrueliving.

Therewardoftruelivingwillbethatyouwillbecomereceptive tothe MasterPowerworkingoveryourhead.Norealprogresscanbehadunless thisreceptivityisdeveloped.Byreceptivityadiscipleiscastintothesame moldastheMaster,butbeforeonecanbecomereceptive,hemusthave rightunderstanding.ThisisgiveneitherbywordofmouthbytheMasterat theSatsangsconductedpersonallybyHimorthroughHiswritingsinthe formofthemanybooksandcircularletterstothosewholiveafar.Right understandingbywordofmouthorthroughHiswritingsconstitutesonly onethirdoftheteachingsoftheMaster;theothertwothirdsareachieved throughdevelopingreceptivity.Christsaid,“Iamthevine,yearethe branches:hethatabidethinme,andIinhim,thesamebringethforth muchfruit:forwithoutmeyecandonothing.”

Thefirstsignthatabranchisreceptivetothelife-givingsapthatrisesinthe bodyofthevinewillbeblossoms,andthesecondthefruitthatitwillbear. Ifabranchcutsitselfofffromthesap,then...?Itwillbecomeadeadpiece ofwood,fitonlyforthepruningshearsofthegardener.Thevinegetsits foodthroughitsrootswhichareintertwinedandimbeddedinthenutriment-givingsoil.Therefore,thebranchthatisreceptiveorattachedtothe bodyofthevinegetsthesamefood.Similarly,theMaster’srootsareembeddedandintertwinedintheGodhead.Sothedisciplewhoisattachedto

Whereverhemaybe,manmuststrivefor nobilityofcharacter,self-controlandpurityofheart. Purityinthought,wordanddeedisessential.

orbecomesreceptivetotheMastercannotonlybefedbythelife-givingsap oftheMasterbutcanactuallypassthroughHisrootsuntilhe,too,becomes embeddedorintertwinedintheGodhead,andthiscanonlybedoneby developingreceptivity.

TheattempttogaintheGodheadwithoutbeingreceptivetotheMaster Powerisfraughtwithdanger.MaulanaRumisays,“DonotgowithinwithouttheMaster,astherearemanydangersinside.”Ifoneshouldhappento riseabovebodyconsciousnesswithoutbeingreceptivetotheMaster Power,hewillbecomehopelesslylostinthelowerastralplanesandrunsa greatriskofbeingdeceivedbythemanymanifestationsoftheNegative Power.TherehavebeeninstanceswhereevengreatRishishavefallenbecausetheyreliedontheirownpowertocarrythemoverthedangersthat aboundintheinnerregions.

Soreceptivityisimportantforsuccessinallphasesoflife, bothmundane andspiritual,anditcanbeachievedbyfollowingtherightunderstanding givenabove.First,onemustleada‘God-likelife’;second,thespiritualdiariesmustbemaintainedintheaccuratewayasalreadyexplained,and third,youmustlearntodevelopreceptivity.Ifyousucceedinthefirsttwo, thethirdwillfollowofitself.

Whenyouremembersomeone fromtheheartofyourheart, itreactsintheonewhomyouremember. ThemoreyouloveHim, themoreyouabideintheLord, forloveisconstantremembrance. Inthatway,receptivityisformed:inthatcase, theyaretwo;buttheyareoneintwo. Thisistobedevelopedbyregulardevotion. Itisaverysimpleway andrequiresnophilosophytoproveit; itiscommonsense.

DearOnes,

therecentincreaseincorrespondencereceivedhereindicatesthatthe manybookswrittenbyme,inadditiontothecircularlettersissuedoverthe pasttwoyears,speciallythosedatedJune13andNovember5,1969,have notbeenread,appreciatedanddigestedbythedearones.Thisisconfirmed bythecontentsoftheletterswrittentomebymostoftheinitiates,which bringupthesamequestionsandproblemswhichhadbeenansweredbya properstudyofthebooksandcircularsalreadyreferredto.

Mycircularlettersshouldbereadagainandagain,bothatSatsangsand individually.AgainIshouldliketostressthatthecircularlettersdatedJune 13andNovember5givetherightunderstandingandguidanceforallsituations,andanyproblemsordifficultiesthatmaybeencounteredintheday todaylivingoftheinitiates.

Youmustputthisrightunderstandingintoactualpractice ifyouwishto succeedinthetaskofman-making,whichyoualonecando.Themoreyou succeedinthisway,themorereceptivityyouwilldeveloptotheMaster Powerwithinyou.Thecircularlettersmentionedaboveshouldbegivento everynewinitiate,togiveimpetustotheirInitiation.Togivefurtherhelp andencouragementontheWay,mynewbook‘MorningTalks’willsoonbe availableforgeneraldistribution.Thisbook,whichcoversmostaspectsof Spirituality,isaGod-givenspiritualtextbooktowhichallinitiatesshould constantlyrefertoseehowtheyaremeasuringuptothestandardsreguired forsuccessintheirman-making.Icannotstresssufficientlytheimportance ofreadingthisbook,digestingitscontents,andthenlivinguptowhatit contains.

ThedearonesshouldalsoberegularinattendingSatsang,whichiswhere thetheoreticalsideoftheTeachingsaregiven,toenablethemtoincrease

theirunderstandingofwhatthebooksandcircularletterswrittenbythe Mastercontain.Whenyouhaverightunderstanding,youwillhaveright thoughts,andfromrightthoughtswillautomaticallyflowrightwordsand rightactions.Satsangisnotaplaceforgossiporsocialget-togethers.Itisa sacredforumwhereallmeettositinsweetremembranceoftheMasteras wellastoincreasetheirunderstanding.

WhileIhavepermittedmeditationsalsotobeheldatSatsanginthepast, generallyaftertheSatsang,Iwouldnowsuggestthatthosedearoneswho wouldliketomeditatetogether,dosobeforetheSatsangcommences.This willavoidtheincidenceofsocialchitchatthathas – inmanycases – been reportedtomeasgoingonatthebeginningandendofSatsang.Itwillalso avoidtheparticipationofnon-initiatesinthemeditationperiod,whichis notdesirable,exceptincasesofsincereseekersafterTruthwhoaredesirous ofinitiation.WhenSatsangisfinished,everyoneshouldleave.ThosenoninitiateswhoareinterestedintheTeachingsshouldbeadvisedtofirstthoroughlystudythebooksandotherliteratureavailable,beforeaskingany questions.IfaftersuchathoroughstudyoftheTeachingstheystillhave somequestions,thesemaybeansweredbythegroupleader.Byattending Satsangintherightspirit,theMasterPowerwithineachinitiatewillradiate,andtheresultantchargingoftheatmospherewillgiveaboosttoall.At timeslikethese,theMasterPowerisgiventherightenvironmenttodoits work,whichistopreparethedearonesfortheirsecondbirthintotheBeyond.

Ifallinitiatesgiveaproperstudytothebooksandcircularlettersandalso attendtheSatsanginthewaydescribedabove,thereshouldbenoneedfor themtowritetotheMasterwithanyquestionorproblem,thesolutionof whichalreadyliesathand.Everyinitiateshouldunderstandthattowriteto meonanyproblemorwithanyquestionistolimittheMasterPowerworkingwithinthem.Itbutdelaystheanswer,whichcouldotherwisebeknown withinashorttimebyfollowingtheadvicegivenabove.Inmycircularof June13,Iadvisedtheinitiatewhohadsomeproblemorquestiontowhich herequiredananswer,tositquietlyinareceptivemood,therebyattuning

himselftothegraciousMasterPowerwithinhim.Thenhewouldsurelyreceivehisanswerandhavefullconfidenceastowhatcourseofactionhe shouldtake.

Forexample,thereisonestoryfromthelifeofLordKrishna.Oneofhis disciples,alady,wasattackedbysomemeninalonelyplace.Sonaturally, shecriedouttoLordKrishnaforhelp,butthoughtofhimasbeinginthe placewherehisphysicalbodyresided,whichwasmanymilesaway.Sojust whenherconditionwasbecomingdesperate,LordKrishnaappearedand shewassaved.WhensheremonstratedwithLordKrishnafortakingso longtocometoheraid,hereplied,“Well,youthoughtofmeasbeingmiles awayfromyou,soittooksometimeformetocometoyourhelp.Butifyou hadrealizedthatIamalwayswithyou,aminfactyourconstantcompanion,Iwouldhaveappearedinstantaneously.”

inner,spiritualprogress.Ifanyinitiatefeelsthathemusthavesomeouter guidanceontheTeachings,heshoulddiscusshisquestionorproblems withthegroupleadersandrepresentativesshouldbethoroughlyfamiliar withtheTeachings.Theywillgreatlyreducetheirownwork-loadifthey readoutatSatsangthecircularlettersalreadyreferredtoinadditionsto selectionsfromthebookswrittenbyme.

Thenewbook‘MorningTalks’willprovidethemwithinvaluablematerial forthispurpose.Butmostofall,theyshouldsetanexampletoothersin theiractions.Exampleisbetterthanprecept.Iftheycarryouttheirresponsibilitiesinalovingandhumblemanner,theywillbecomemorereceptive channelsfortheMasterPowertoworkthrough.Theirveryradiationwill benefitotherswithoutthemutteringoneword.

Howeverthereisoneveryimportantpointthatmustbeborninmindby all,whetherinitiates,groupleadersorrepresentatives.Thisis,thatgroup leadersandrepresentativesaretherepurelyforthepurposeofgivingout thetheoreticalsideoftheTeachingsandinarrangingfacilitieswherebythe initiatesoftheirgrouporareacanmeettogetherforSatsang.

Groupleadersandrepresentativesarenottobeusedascrutchesforthe otherinitiatestoleanupon.Norshouldtheinitiatelooktothemforany purposebuttohelptheminunderstandingtheTeachings.Inotherwords, initiatesshouldnotlooktothemforspiritualguidanceinanyshapeor form,asthisisthefunctionoftheMaster.Ifaninitiatelookstoagroup leaderorrepresentativeforspiritualguidanceheautomaticallyplacesa blockageinbetweenhimselfandtheMasterandhisspiritualprogresswill sufferinconsequence.Similarlyifagroupleaderorrepresentativeallows himselftobeusedinthisway,he,too,standstolose.

Sotosummarize,groupleadersandrepresentativesarethereonlytohelp otherstohaverightunderstandingoftheTeachings(whichtheycanonly doiftheyarethoroughlyconversantwiththem),andtoprovideahealthy exampleofthelifetobeled.ItshouldberememberedthattheMaster Poweriswithineachinitiateandthateachoneshouldbeaninspirationto hisfellow,whetherinitiateornon-initiate.Thosewhohavedevelopedmore

DearOnes,

overthepastyear,Ihaveobservedfromthespiritualdiariessentinbythe dearones,thattheyreportlittleornoinnerprogress,someevenmentioningthattheyhavemadenoheadwaysincethetimeoftheirholyInitiation. Becausethereappearstobealackofrightunderstandingastowhysteady progresshasnotbeenmade,Ishouldliketoclarifytheprocessbywhich suchprogresscanbeachieved.Ifthedearonesweretodotheirspiritual practicescorrectly,withdueregardtoself-introspection,theywould,as sureastwoandtwomakefour,riseabovebodyconsciousnessandtranscendintotheBeyond,wheretheinnerMasterispatientlywaitingtogreet Hischildrenatthethresholdoftheastralplane.Butbecausetheyareunabletodothis,evenforashortwhile,theyerroneouslybelievetheirmeditationstobebarrenofallconcreteresults.

IfyouwereabletofollowtheMaster’sinstructionsaccurately,youwouldbe suretoagreewithSt.Paul,whotellsusintheBible:‘Idiedaily’.Therefore, whatisitthatpreventsyoufromfollowingtheMaster’sinstructions?Itis yourownmind,whichyouhavenotyetbeenabletocoaxawayfromthe outerattachmentsoftheworldtotheblissthatawaitsitinside.Whatthe Mastertellsyoutodoisnotreallydifficultifyoucouldbutcomprehendthe simplicityofit.Hetellsyoutositinapositionmostcomfortabletoyou,one inwhichyoucansitthelongestwithoutmoving;thatwhilesittinginthis position,youaretoremainwideawakewithyourattentiondirectedatthe seatofthesoulbehindandbetweenthetwoeyebrows;thatyouaretolook sweetlyandserenelyintothemiddleofthedarknessinfrontofyou,repeatingtheSimranoffivechargednamesslowlyandatintervals.

Somesucceedinperformingtheirspiritualdisciplinesintheprescribed mannerinashortperiod,othersdonotforwantoftheconsciouscontrol ofthemindandtheoutgoingfaculties.Thisiswhyithasalwaysbeen stressedtoweedoutallundesirabletraitsandhabits,andtoreplacethem

bytheoppositeennoblingvirtues;andforthis,themaintenanceofthe monthlyself-introspectiondiaryismandatory.Themoreyouprogressin man-making,themoreyourmindandsenseswillcomeunderyourconsciouscontrol.Thishasalreadybeendealtwithverythoroughly,aswellas otheraspectsofspiritualdevelopment,inmypreviouscircularletters whichtogetherwith‘MorningTalks’constitutetheyardstickswhichyou mayapplytomeasurehowfaryouhavesucceededinyourdisciplines,both outerandinner.

Sowhatismeantby‘notdoingthepracticesproperly’ issimplyanother wayofsayingthattheone-pointedconcentrationpreludingcompletewithdrawaltotheeye-focushasnotyetbeenachievedbythedearones.Youare theindwellerofyourownbody,butarenotyetitsmaster.Yourservants, themindandfivesenses,haveusurpedthethroneonwhichyoursoul shouldsit.Untiltheyaredispossessedandplacedintheirrightfulplaceas servants,theywillnotallowyoutowithdrawandgoin.TheMasterwithin, likealovingFather,iseagerlyawaitingthedaywhenyouhavesetyour houseinorder.Heonlyrequiresoneopportunitytosnatchyoufromthe prisonhouseofthebody,andlikeanexpertangler,onceHehassuccessfully hookedHisfish,HewillnotallowittoescapeuntilHehasitsafelyinHis basket.

Manissoconstitutedthathecannotforlongremainatonelevel. Heeitherprogressesorslipsback.Youmayjudgeforyourselveswhichwayyou aregoingbyseeinghowfaryourmindsandsensesarecomingunderyour consciouscontrol.

Thisisachievednotonlybyethicalliving,butalsobytheinnerhelpand strengthyougeteverytimeyousitforyourmeditations.So,ifnoapparent headwayisachieved,knowitforsurethatthegroundisbeingwatered.Everytimeyousit,youarecreatingahabitwhichonedaythemindwillaccept asinitsbestinterest,asopposedtoitspresenthabitofseekingenjoyment inoutsidethings.Habitstrengthensintonature,andthisisthereasonfor thepresentdifficultiesexperiencedbythedearonesintheirroutinemeditations.Thehabitofthemindinrunningafteroutsideenjoymentshasbe-

comenaturaltoit.Therefore,itresentssittinginthequiet.Bycreatinga newhabit,youwill,intime,changethenatureofthemindfromoneseekingpleasureinthingsexternaltoonethirstingfortheblissandsweetness tobehadfromthingsinternal.

“Thyrestlessmindcontinuallygoesastray;howcaniteverbebroughttoheel? OnlybygivingtheheartandsoultotheWordorNameofGod; nootherwayhaseverbeenfoundoreverwillbefound.”

SoIwishforyoutotreadthePathhavingfullfaithandconfidenceinthe Master,andaboveall,begratefulthatyouhavebeenacceptedforInitiation inthisdifficultagewearelivingin.Persevere,persevere,andpersevere again.PerseverancecombinedwithfullfaithinthegraciousMasterPower workingoverheadwillonedayremoveallobstacles,andyourcherished goalwillbeachieved.

DearchildrenofLight, representatives,groupleaders,initiates,seekersofGodandaspirants, itisapleasuretoseethatthevineyardofHazurisinfullbloomandHis familyisgrowingfromstrengthtostrengthwiththepassageoftime.Along withthis,thereisacorrespondingincreaseintheworkload,especiallyin theincomingmailthatisgrowinginbulkeachday.Inthisconnection,I havealreadyissuedthreedetailedcircularletters–datedJune13andNovember5,1969,andJanuary27,1970,asprintedin“Receptivity”–followed byanotheronFebruary20,1971.

Themainpurposeofissuingthesecircularletterswastoprovideusefuland practicalguidelinestothedearonesonthePathandconsequentlystreamlineandcutdowntheunnecessaryandavoidablecorrespondence.Butit appearsthattheinstructionscontainedthereinhavenotbeenread,appreciatedandfollowedinthespiritinwhichtheywereissued.Itisevident fromtheincessantinflowofnumerousroutineandstereotypeletters/communicationsreceivedoverhereinlargenumbers.Youwouldpleaserealize thatittakesalotoftimetodisposeofitbyworkinglatehoursinthenight –manytimesbeyondmidnight.Itis,therefore,onceagaindesiredtolimit thecorrespondenceworkandtokeepitwithinrationalbounds.Forthis purposeitissuggestedthateveryonemuststrivetodohisorhermiteto achievethedesiredresultspositivelysoastoleaveampletimefortheMastertoattendtomoreimportantmattersofpolicy,planningandprojectsin handrelatingtoman-makingandspiritualupliftmentallaround.

Ihave,timeandagain,emphasizedthateachoneshouldmakeoneselfthoroughlyconversantwith: 1.Theguidelinesprovidedinthevariousbookspublishedsofar. 2.Thecontentsofthevariouscircularlettersissuedheretofore.

Itisallthemoreimportantthatthegroupleadersandrepresentatives should,bycarefulreadingandreverentstudyofthebooksandcircularletters,makethemselvesthoroughlyconversantwiththebasictenetsofthe ScienceSpiritualandinducethoseinthefold,botholdandnew,todolikewisesoastohaveaclearandcorrectinsightintothedaytodayproblems oflifewhichare,moreorless,alikeintheirnatureandareofaroutinetype. Inthisway,therewouldbeadivisionoflabourandeachonewouldlearn tostandonone’sownlegsandwillalsobeabletohelphisorherbrethren. Byhelpingothersyouare,infact,helpingyourownselfinsomanydifferentforms.Selflessservicehasitsownrewardandbeingbornofinnatelove forall,embracesthetotalityofHisbeing.

Untilnow,itwassuggestedthattheself-introspectiondiariesshouldcome directlytotheMasterforobtaininginstructionsandguidance,butitisnow feltthatintheoverallinterestoftheentireworkandtolessenthestrainon theMaster,thisworkcansafelybedecentralizedandlefttothesagacious careoftherepresentativesandgroupleaders.

Thetwothingstobecarefullyobservedinthediariesare:

1.Regularandaccuratemeditationsfromdaytodayandascorollary, therefore,experienceswillbegainedinVisionandAudition.

2.Lapsesincardinalvirtues,especiallyinthought,formindisthegreatestfoeandhastobeturnedintoausefulfriendandallybycoaxing, cajolingandgradualrestraint,byacarefulwatchoveritsantics.

Victoryoverthemindmeansvictoryovertheworld. Onewhocancontainhimselfbycontrollingthemindisthegreatestheroandthebravestof thebrave.Ifthisisachieved,lapsesinwordsanddeedswilltakecareof themselvesandwillautomaticallygodown.

Anotherthingworthnotingisdifficultiesandobstaclesmetwithbythe practitioners.Theseare,inthemain,duetolackofcarefreerelaxationin practice,anconsciousnessof‘pranas’(respiration),whichsupplyafulcrum

Again,mostofthedearsoulscraveforspectacularresults andcomplain ofslowprogress.But,beitknownthatthetimefactorisanessentialelementanditdifferswithdifferentindividuals,dependingonsomanyfactors:eachone’sbackground,mentaldevelopment,presentenvironments andthedegreeofreceptivityacquired.

ThespiritualPathisanarduousup-hilljourney andrequiressteadfastpatienceandperseverance.Slowandsteadywinstheraceinthelongrun.The MasterPowerismoreanxioustopullusupthanwearepreparedtorepose inHim.Heknowsourneedsmorethatwedoandiseverreadytoextend Hishelpinghandtousifwecaretograspit.

Insteadofcompletelygivingourselvestothehealthier,higherandholier influencecomingfromabove,weremain,forthemostpart,hide-boundor mind-riddenandthuswestandinthewayoftheDivinePowerwhich comesdownlikeagentledoveifwearebutreadytoreceiveHim.Onthe contrary,westandbetweenGodandourselvesandkeepsurveyingthe processofwithdrawalinsteadofengaginginthespiritualpracticeswithall ourheart,mindandsoul.

Next,therearethreetypesofcommonailments whichusuallyhauntand afflictourfootsteps:physicalorbodily,emotionalormental,andthose causedby‘vismaior’ortheDivinePower.Themajoreventsinlifeare,for themostpart,chartedoutbeforehandandtheresttooaretheeffectsof causessetgoinginthepast,andthereisnoescapetherefrom.Itisbetterto acceptthemsmilinglyandtakethemsportivelythantorueoverthemand keepalongfaceallthetime.Beinginthefleshitisnotwisetoexpect wholenessallthetime.Wehavetoadjustourselvestothesurroundings, conditionsandcircumstancesandthenthestormsandstresseswilljust blowoverlikeagentlebreeze.Theinitiateshave,however,theaddedadvantageofthelongandstrongarmoftheMasterPowerwhichalwaysworksto theirgood,eveninseeminglyadversesituations.

Thesearesomeoftheproblemswhich,atonestageoranother,cropupin thelifeofeveryone,andmostofthecorrespondenceisofastereotypenatureandassuchcaneasilybehandledanddisposedoflocally,byexplainingmatterssweetlyandgentlyandputtingthingsintheirrightperspective.

InthiswayyoucanrelievetheMastertoagreatextent.Itwouldbebetter toreadtheinstructionscarefully,andanattemptshouldbemadetomake eachrealizetheimportanceofminimizingtheworkloadatthisend.

Thesearejustafewtips.Allthesemattersare,assaidabove,fullyexplained inthevariouspublicationsandcircularletters,whichcoverawiderangeof subjectsandsituations,andcaneasilybepressedintoservicetomeet.

Lastbutnotleast,thereisacardinalneedfordevelopinginnerreceptiv‐ity.TheMasterPower,asyouallknow,isnotconfinedtoanyparticular place.Itisworkinginandaroundyou.YouhavebuttoturnyourfacetowardsHiminwardlytogettherequiredhelpandguidancewherevernecessary.Learntositstill,andbementallystill,andthesilencethusgenerated willbemorevocalthanwordsspokenandwritten;andyouwillhavean instantaneoussolutionnotonlytoyourpersonalproblemsbuttotheproblemsofothersaswell.Thisisthegreatestsecretofsuccess.

InHisbooksandwritingsSantKirpalSinghrepeatedlytellsofa“liv‐ingMaster“, whomonehastomeetwhilehelivesinthisworld.Thisrefers tothelawoftheIronAge,inwhichitwasdestinedbytheHighestPower thatforman’sguidanceandspiritualdevelopmentalwaysoneMastersucceededanother.

Butnowadays,inthisspecialtimeofchangefromtheIrontotheGolden Age,SantKirpalSinghcamewiththecompetencyoftheAlmightyPower, whichworksdirectlyandindependently.ThisPowerisnotboundtothe physicalbody,butiscapableofcontinuingtheworkevenafterhavingleft thebody.Ifthisisthecase,theouterworkofaphysicalMasterisnot needed.

WheneverSantKirpalSinghwasasked,"WhowillbeYoursuccessor?"He answered,"YouareallmySaints."–"Iwanttoworkwiththousandsof hands."–"Iwillneverletyoudown."ItwasHiswishthatHisdisciples shouldbecomeconsciousandbeambassadorsoftruth.

HeguaranteedthatforthetimecomingHeHimselfwillberesponsible fortheinnerworkandconsciouspeopleorGurmukhs(developeddisciples)willtakeonthetasktoexplainthetheoryandtogiveapracticalexampleforaspirituallife.

ItisstillonHimalonetolinkthesoulwiththeGodpower,togiveinner guidanceandtowindupthekarmaofthedisciples.SantKirpalSinghHimselfinthebook“Godman”(Chapter4,page38)explained:

“AfterHispassingawayonemayderivebenefitformtheSatsangconductedbya GurmukhwhoiscarryingonthedutiesofGuru,andmayconsulthimincasehe hassomedifficulty.
