The last name “Ryan” has been associated with Dirt Late Model Racing for many years, but it wasn’t always the same first name. Davenports Terry Ryan began his racing career as a crew member in 1975 for late model great Rollie Frink. In 1985 Terry hit the track himself in the Open Wheel Modified division, winning the 1986, 1989, and 1990 modified track championship at the Tipton International Speedway, now known as the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa. In 1991 Terry decided that late model racing way the way to go and away he went. Terry raced locally at the Davenport Speedway, The West Liberty Raceway, and many other tracks following NASCAR’S Busch All Star Tour and the occasional IMCA Deery Brothers Events. “Tipton, West Liberty, and Cedar Rapids, have always

been on the top of my list of tracks", says Ryan. I asked where the famous 07 comes from, Terry said “while I was helping Rollie Frink in the 70’s I met a driver by the name of Sam Reakes, originally from New Jersey, he was a heck of a nice guy and man was he fast. When I started racing I decided that I wanted to use Sam’s number”. Along with his 3 modified track championships, Terry has racked up numerous heat race wins and 30-35 feature wins during his 18 year career. One of his favorites was in 1989 at the Sunset Speedway during a NASCAR Modified Special, then there’s the one that got away, He was leading an IMCA Deery Brothers special on the white flag lap but ended 2nd. Racing has been good to Terry, but the most fulfilling part of his career has been the people and the life-long friendships that he has formed along that way. Just before Terry made the jump from modified to late model, a young Matt Ryan, exploded on the go kart scene for the 1990 season. Over the next couple years while Terry was racing Late Models, son Matt was finding his way racing karts and Modifieds from time to time. In 1999 Matt Ryan started his Late Model adventure at the 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa. “Those first couple years I only raced one night, as dad was still racing weekly at the Davenport Speedway and the Deery Brothers events” says Ryan. The

two only raced each other 1 time. “I think it was at the Pepsi Nationals in Burlington”, Matt stated. Matt was driving his dad’s 07 car while Terry was driving the 28c owned by Brad Coin. “We were in the same heat” said Matt, “I drove right by him, but missed the feature by one spot, dad was able to make it in the feature through a B Main, so I guess I won the battle but he won the war” said Matt. Terry claims “Matt is a better driver than me, but he learned it all from me”. In 2003 Terry decided that it was time to hang it up and turn the reigns over to Matt Full time. Matt grew up at the race track watching drivers like Rollie and Terry do battle every week. “Racing was my only passion from a very early age” says Matt, “it doesn’t seem that long ago that my uncle had to go back in the stands to find all my match box cars in the
wee hours of the morning”. These days you can find Matt Ryan racing the 07 IMCA Late Model at the Davenport Speedway, the Jackson County Speedway, and The Quad City Speedway weekly, as well as the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series events, and the occasional open late model special around the Midwest. Over the years Matt says he has somewhere around 30 late Model feature wins. Although he says he doesn’t have a favorite track, the Quad City Speedway and Davenport Speedway rank up towards the top of the list, and despite winning the Simmons Promotions “Tri Track Challenge” in 2013, Matt claims that his worst track is West Liberty Raceway in West Liberty, Iowa. “I rarely have good results there, for some reason I need a GPS and a co-

pilot to find my way around that track”, says Matt. Like his dad Matt has had numerous wins and success at many tracks over the years, the one that sticks out the most is winning the Slocum 50 in Burlington, “Brent Slocum was a very good friend of mine and, winning the race that honor’s him was very special for me and my family” says Ryan. The Yankee Dirt Track Classic in Farley Iowa, is on the list to be won. “I’ve been going to the Yankee, watching or driving for so many years, that win will mean a lot also”, says Matt, “I would also like to take a shot at the World 100 or even the IMCA Super Nationals in a Modified someday”. The 2015 season was a break out season for Matt Ryan racing. With Numerous top five finishes and 11 feature wins Matt was able to win the track championships at the Davenport Speedway, the Jackson County Speedway, and the Quad City Raceway in the IMCA Late Model division. “We set out this year focused on winning races, I have never won a track championship in my entire career, winning one would have been exciting, three was just crazy” say Matt. His 2015 success didn’t end there he was also crowned Illinois State Champion for the IMCA Late Model division, and missed the IMCA Late Model National points championship by 3 points
to Justin Kay. What’s next for Matt Ryan Racing, Matt will return to the Davenport Speedway and the Quad City Raceway to defend his title, as well as following the Deery Brothers Series so that he can chase the IMCA National Championship again, “coming up 3 points short this year has lit a fire”, say Matt. “I love the competition, knowing that all the others on the track are trying as hard as they can to win and when you are able to take home the win that night, that’s what it’s all about” says Matt. Matt would like to thank his crew chief Jake Fier, Adam Sampson, and dad Terry Ryan for all the help at the track each week. And to all his sponsors, Country Financial Mike Sansone, The Filling Station, Everhart Mortgage, Hickory Garden Restaurant, Performance Bodies, Nick and Ron’s Dingus East, Country Spring Bottled Water, and Gheered up Racecars, none of this would be possible without their help. And to Shiela and Terry Ryan (mom and dad), Sister Jennifer Thanks for putting up with me and sticking with me all these years. “And to my wife Molly, she puts up with a lot during racing season she is always bringing the kids Deliliah and Alyse to the shop to see Daddy and to the track each weekend, she is a special women, she is my hero” says Matt. DRM
Matt’s on his way to another win as he battles Andy Nezworski for position at Quad City Speedway.

It looks like the racing you would see on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night in the middle of the summer at your local dirt track. Whether you’re at the Wildman Raceway in Colona or the Rt. 6 Speedway in Coal Valley, there’s one major different between these cars and the ones at your favorite dirt track and that’s size. The Wildman Raceway, ran by Kevin Blum and Dave Wadsager, features several divisions of RC (remote control) cars including 13.5 Late Models, Mods, beginners, Street Stocks, and the high powered 1/5 scale Late Models. Around 20 competitorsrace from the end of April until it’s too cold outside to race. There’s no money for winning, it is all bragging rights, and in 2016 they will be crowning track champions. Wadsager and Blum took their cars to Blairsburg, Iowa, and competed against some of the
best. Wadsager came away with couple second places and Blum won all six of his races. On any given Sunday at the Wildman Raceway you can watch Mike Murphy Jr., Buck Harmening, Jerry Bailey Jr., and many others race side by side. Rich Nordholm is also building an indoor track in the building on 4th Ave. in Moline that the Factor Fear haunted house is in every year. It is always free to the public and you can follow them on Facebook at Wildman Raceway. If you are interested in racing contact Kevin Blum or Dave Wadsager. Down the road, outside of Coal Valley, is the Rt. 6 Speedway featuring 1/32 scale slot car racing. The two year old “1/2 mile” showcases Modifieds and Sprint Cars. It all started eight years ago when owners, Mike Stroele Sr. and Jr. opened the “1/4 mile” Arlington Raceway in Davenport. This year they have averaged 16 Modifieds and 14
Sprints. On any given Sunday you can see the likes of Shane Davis, Sam Davis, Jeff Morris, Jake Morris, John Freeman, Andrew Freeman, Brent Prior, Jim Willert, Matt Burroughs, and many others running side by side. They even put a baked flour down on the track to make it look like there is dirt flying and the cars actually get sideways in the corners. If you’re interested in racing contact Mike Stroele Sr. or Jr. or Shane Davis. A turnkey slot car can be yours for $80.
Nothing compares to the rumble of a full size late model rolling onto the track at the Quad City Speedway or the smell of a full size modified in the pits at the Davenport Speedway but these outlets for racing fill a void for fans and drivers behind the controls. Some of the drivers will never get behind the wheel of a full size car again and this helps fill their void. If you’re a racing fan and you need that racing fix during those long and cold winter months then look these guys up. DRM
Here’s a close up of a 1/32 scale slot car with painted to resemble one of Jeff Morris’s earlier modifieds.

Notably, Salt Lake City, UT, based action sports event marketing company, Mountain Sports International (MSI), is in final negotiations to acquire ownership of the series. Established in 1997, MSI has owned and operated action sports events in a variety of sports categories and brings a long history of experience to TORC. “MSI is honored to join the short course offroad racing community as the managers of the sport’s premier series. Founded by athletes, MSI has always approached events by putting the sport and participants’ needs at the forefront of our decision making,” said MSI COO and Coowner Dave Swanwick. “In 2016, fans can look forward to a bigger and better TORC experience with more of our racers moving up to the PRO 2 and PRO 4 classes.” “MSI’s capabilities and team will bring a wealth of expertise to the sport heightening the exposure of the TORC drivers and brand. ERX has a history of drawing large crowds for high level motorsports events and is located just 40 minutes north of Minneapolis. The new off-road venue will be located in a natural amphitheater where fans will have visibility of the entire track. From Minnesota, the series will head back east to Bark River International Raceway in Northern Michigan August 13-14. After Bark River, the series will return to Crandon International Off-Road Raceway for the conclusion of the 2016 season at the famed “Fall Crandon” Labor Day Race, the largest short course off-road event in the U.S. The series champions will be crowned, once again, at short course off-road racing’s most iconic track. “I’m super pumped to be the first [driver] in TORC history to win both the PRO 2WD and PRO 4WD Championships in the same season. I still can’t believe how great 2015 was for our entire Greaves Motorsports team!” remarked TORC Driver CJ Greaves. “As far as 2016, our team is looking forward to the new exposure and opportunities that MSI is bringing to the Series, and we’re ready to defend our championships.” DRM TORC 2016 Season Schedule April TBA: Charlotte, NC / PRO classes only May TBA: Forth Worth, TX / PRO classes only June TBA: Chicago, IL June 25-26: Crandon, WI (Crandon International Off-Road Raceway) July 16-17: Elk River, MN (ERX Motorpark) August 13-14: Bark River, MI (Bark River International Raceway) September 2-4: Crandon, WI (Crandon International Off-Road Raceway)
