Scoliosis Disability Tax Credit
What is Scoliosis Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown. Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some children develop spine deformities that continue to get more severe as they grow. Severe scoliosis can be disabling.
Symptoms of Scoliosis Symptoms of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, uneven waist, one hip higher than the other, one shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other. If the condition gets worse the spine will rotate or twist in addition to curving to side to side and this cause the ribs on one side of the body to stick out farther than on the other side.
Available Treatments for Scoliosis The best available treatment for severe scoliosis is surgery. The surgery is called lumbar spinal fusion which is an operation that causes the vertebrae (bones of the spine) in the lower back to grow together. The goal of the lumbar fusion is to have the two vertebrae fuse (grow solidly together) so that there is no longer any motion between them.
